Chat with Chuck Mindenhall

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:00 PM)

Crazy things going on in Seattle. FOX card is about to go off tomorrow night, and it's stacked (not to mention gratis). Rousey becomes the first Diaz brother to be awarded a UFC belt...and she'll be headlining the first ever women's UFC fight in the at UFC 157 in Anaheim against Liz Carmouche (the first openly gay UFC fighter). My head's on a swivel. What's on your minds?

Paul (Bakersfield) [via mobile]

Can you please talk some sense into Nick Diaz fans? All the questions and statements about him fighting Silva are rediculous! With his style, he wouldn't last 5 minutes.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:01 PM)

Paul, I would love to talk sense to the Diaz faithful, but they won't hear it. Besides, looks like he'll get his other wish, that of fighting GSP.

Tyrone martinlle va [via mobile]

Hi chuck " i love the fox card . But hate the idea of rhonda headling a ppv . A head a of a lengend in hendo a fomer world champ in machida bad move dana . What do u think . miss mma live thanks

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:02 PM)

I think that it's a bold move by the UFC to put Rousey/Carmouche as the main event. I know they want to roll out the red carpet treatment for Rousey, but it would have been better to wait on the headlining spot for Cyborg. Henderson just keeps getting slighted, too. I guess since it's a historical event the UFC deemed it headliner worthy, but might have been better suited for a FOX card.

Matt (Nashville)

Do you think Forrest Griffin's injury could lead to a possible Rampage rematch? Or is Rampage required to beat Glover to secure another UFC fight?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:04 PM)

Rampage is required one more fight in the UFC, and then it's the big "what's next?" He said he wants out. UFC says, "so long." But if he beats up Teixeira, here's guessing this isn't the last Octagon appearance by Jackson. And sticking him in there with Griffin makes a lot of sense (when Griffin's healthy).

Domnick n.C. [via mobile]

Chuck like the story on b.J.. H ave a hard time seeing win tommrow rory is huge. Big b.J. Fan may win by submisson. What do u thank ? Thanks !

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:05 PM)

Rory is huge. And he's a very well-balanced new generation martial artist. He doesn't spook easily, nor feed into BJ's legend. Bottom line is, Penn had better be in the best shape of his life, and completely motivated...otherwise, this might be a one-sided fight.

Nickel Steak (Boston)

Chuck, good day for MMA journalism. Any thoughts on Jake Rossen's 1996 UFC tournament retrospective, or the piece in Slate about how the Fox deal has the UFC handcuffed?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:07 PM)

Yeah, a lot of the old Sherdog writers cropped back up on the same day. Liked both pieces. Rossen's retrospective was awesome, I thought. I always like to glimpse pieces of history like that through the fighters eyes. The Rios/Marchman piece in Slate was good, too. A lot of good points in there. You see that shared byline and you don't expect anything different.

Rolando (Danbury CT)

Hey Bro, who you picking in Pacquiao-Marquez IV and are you watching both combat sports on Saturday?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:08 PM)

Going to make it a combat sports marathon, UFC then boxing. Going Pacman....but don't feel great about that.

Phil Davis (In Limbo)

Chuck, am I fighting in Vegas on the 29th? If so, who is my opponent?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:09 PM)

Phil, I wish I had better news for you. But there aren't many options available, unless you want to face a Prado-caliber fighter again. Or...I guess Johny Hendricks is around, if you want to try a catchweight?

Eric (Spring)

Is Dana going to do a female tuf who Is going to win tomorrow all the main card how for each I think Diaz hands are to quick for bendo 2 round ko is jj wait a MVP canadate

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:10 PM)

Let's see, Eric. Sorting this out. I think the UFC will do a female version of TUF at some point. They need to fill the cupboards (plus, that would be a lot more fun to watch). As for my picks, going Swick, Gusty, MacDonald and Bendo.

Brad (Palo Alto)

Shinya Aoki against Antonio McKee -- over/under on that fight going a round.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:11 PM)

Whoaseph...I will say under. Think that Aoki takes home McKee's arm and plays a mean-spirited round of cricket with it.

Wes (Austin)

How big will Rousey against Cyborg be when they finally make it?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:13 PM)

I'd have to imagine it will be pretty big. Rousey just needs to hold court with Carmouche, and there's no reason to think she won't. They are feuding back and forth, so by the time it gets book, I expect it to be a big fight. Probably the biggest female MMA match in history.

cal (charlotte)

nice piece on bj penn, chuck. if he upsets rory mcdonald, do you think he'll get a title shot? or pull a bj and move to 155?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:14 PM)

I don't think he'll get a title shot, but it would speak volumes for him to beat MacDonald. For one, MacDonald is pretty high up in the rankings. So he would take Rory's spot. But there are so many good 170ers. Maybe they would book Penn/Hendricks, in that case.

Jason (Corona)

Hey bro, let's have your picks for the main card. Which fight on the undercard stands out, too.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:15 PM)

That battle between Mike Easton and Raphael Assuncao should be a good one. Any time Easton gets in there it's like a million swarming bees.

Creole Alfanza (Harlem Barber Shop)

I once cut Frankie Edgar's hair. Damn does that guy have some cauliflower ear. Anyway, true or false: Pettis-Bendo in WEC finale is a top 5 MMA fight of all-time.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:18 PM)

He does have some vegetation on them ears, which is always all he warning you need to know right up front. I would say false on that fight. It was a good scrap, very good, with one ridiculously, nearly impossible to imagine Matrix moment. That kick deserves mention in the top fight MMA Moments, maybe.

Bucky (Wichita)

Jake Shields calling out Johny Hendricks. Foolish, or smart opportunism?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:19 PM)

Both, Bucky. Why not call out the guy who is in No. 1 contender limbo and try and take his spot? Smart move. But then again, who actually likes Shields' chances against Hendricks?

tyler (mission viejo)

since mma fans are wont to complain, give me one good reason to not spend my money on this fox card....

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:19 PM)

I see what you did there, Tyler. You can spend your money on this card. Nobody's going to stop you.

alex (ct)

Carwin is getting old and banged up, see any more from him in the future?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:21 PM)

I feel bad for Carwin. Guy had been trying to come back for a long time, and then goes down again. Can't catch a break. My guess is, if he can get over the discouragement of the situation, he'll make it back to the Octagon at some point. Will he be a contender? I have my doubts.

Ken (ca.)

Excellent article on the GSP/Diaz/Hendricks situation. Nothing more needs to be said........Except, Hendricks would very likely do to Diaz what he's done to his last three opponents.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:22 PM)

Very good possibility of that, Ken. If Paul Daley could clip Diaz and nearly put him away, Hendricks would have the same opportunity. He sets up that left well, too. Thanks for the words on the article. Crazy situation going on with Silva-GSP expectation being softened with GSP-Diaz.

Matt (NJ)

Man, the allure of Penn is impossible to fight. Guy has about 1 win in two years and it seems to be split 50-50 of people picking the fight.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:23 PM)

He has that aura. It's pretty amazing. I think part of it is we have seen him at his best, so we know what he is capable of. There's a big part of us that "wants" to see him live up to that.

caveman 716 [via mobile]

Give my boy the calzone anthony leone some props going into a tough bellitor fight tonight. I went 3 rounds with him he is a beast

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:24 PM)

Props!

Salsa Time! (NYC)

Did you see Rory MacDonald at the presser? He looked like Joey Bishop in the "Rat Pack." BTW, before we anoint MacDonald as the next GSP, I think we need to remember Evan Dunham and George Sotiropoulous. Remember they were next and it didn't happen. Stop saying next. Say maybe.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:25 PM)

Excellent point. There's been plenty of guys who come flying up the rungs all strength and invulnerability, then somebody finds a weakness and that's that. I do think MacDonald is a very well-rounded fighter, and he's a beast. And there is nothing comforting about that zero conscience shark gaze of his.

Marc (Chicago, IL)

Who is the most under-rated fighter in the UFC? I am going with Jon Fitch.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:26 PM)

He gained some steam in that good showing with Erick Silva, but traditionally, yes. I'd go with him. I would also toss out the names Nik Lentz and Darren Elkins. Two guys who win a lot but can't make it off the afternoon portion of the undercard.

Rick (Kansas)

Between your chat and Breen's chat on Sherdog, Fridays have got to be my least productive day every week.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:27 PM)

We are here to serve. Just found out that Breen and I (along with Luke Thomas and Rami Genauer of Fight Metric) will be on the MIT Sloan's Analytics panel together in March. That should be a lot of fun.

Ross (KC)

Sum up for me your expectation of BJ Penn against MacDonald. I see it being a three-round pounding by the biggest fighter.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:28 PM)

Much as I want to shake it, that's how I see it too. I am leaving myself in a holding state on expectations, though...so that if Penn comes in ten times mean, I can be pleasantly surprised. There's an air of optimism on this fight, and that makes it that much greater.

Ron (Chicago)

I know you like Matt Brown. Like, really like Matt Brown. But why did you pick against him in this Mike Swick fight?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:29 PM)

I do like Matt Brown. He always brings it, and he's resilient. His story is unbelievable. But I picked Swick just because I envision a first round moment when both are in each other's wheelhouses, and Swick catches his chin. And down goes Brown. Down goes Brown.

Hey Bro (All Night Long)

You watch Dog the Bounty Hunter? Those guys love MMA. And hate ice.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:30 PM)

Ha, no. My mom has told me about that show. I guess I need to set the DVR.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:31 PM)

I really don't know. Koscheck is in a strange bit of limbo, too. He's no longer in the hunt for belt, so high-profile fights look like his future. Maybe he'd still take a fight at middleweight?

Miller Huggins (Saskatoon)

How functional is your BJJ, brah?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:31 PM)

My belt is so white that it's translucent. I do know how to apply a RNC, though. (And a gogoplata).

Beardovitch (Hendricks, KY)

Johny Hendricks is growing metabolites in his beard. He also would get exposed by GSP. We need to stop matchmaking and let the UFC sell big fights. This free one on Saturday should make up for the bad PPVs. I still want to see Lesnar-Carwin II. That is all.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:33 PM)

There is a veritable garden in Hendricks' beard, it's true. What flora. But I wonder about the GSP/Hendricks fight. There's a part of me that looks at Hendricks tool set and thinks, "GSP has never seen a unique arrangement of wrestling/headiness/power" like that. But GSP, and his coaches, are excellent at exploiting weakness, so what you say is entirely possible.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:35 PM)

You know, if MacDonald just manhandles Penn, you could stack him against Hendricks and it would be a big fight. It could be a No. 1 contender fight, but there are so many complications. For one, MacDonald doesn't want to fight GSP (not yet, anyway). And two, Hendricks has already fought in and won two other No. 1 contender's bouts, so I don't think he'd buy that little fib again.

Ronnie James Dio (Tulsa)

Watching Jon Fitch fight makes me want to cease to exist. You laugh on the inside but I cry on the outside. This is real blood, brother. The kind that breaks hearts and stains carpets.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:36 PM)

This made me very happy. Thank you, RJD.

Ricky D (Atlanta)

Broncos on an eight-fight win streak. You've got to be happy. Think they can they snatch that 2 seed?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:37 PM)

Eight wins in a row is great. And it all started with that 24-0 halftime deficit to the Chargers. How fortunes can change in the NFL. They need to beat the Ravens in Baltimore next week if they are going to entertain the idea of a bye. And they need the Texans to do work this Monday night in Foxboro.

Kyle (Phoenix)

Jake Rossen is alive and well!!!

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:38 PM)

He is indeed. Dude has a cult following. Was very happy to see him at it again. I guess he's been writing for the New York Times, too. Talented writer. One of my favorite MMA chroniclers.

Peter (Dallas)

Admit it. You want Anderson Silva's new Bentley.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:38 PM)

Does this admission come with consequences? I admit it.

Stephen (Brooklyn)

How much have you changed in your opinion about BJ's chances against Rory? I remember a couple of months ago you thought BJ had next to no chance.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:39 PM)

I want to believe, Stephen. Those abs....you could run a xylophone mallet across them. And he is focused. So, I am holding out hope that he makes it a competitive fight.

Fedor (Mother Russia)

Knock Knock...

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:40 PM)

Here we go.....who's there?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:41 PM)

Yeah, I've stopped investing too much in the concept of No. 1 contender's bout. Too many of them are barely even theoretical.

Chuck (IL)

How goes it Chuck - Which of the following are you more likely to shout from your reserved seat at the bar of 'Freds Speakeasy,' "Lombard lands a big one, it's all over" or "Palhares has his leg, it's all over"

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:43 PM)

That is such a compelling fight of twitch-pecks that I am torn. I am leaning towards Palhares. Should he snatch that leg, the Lombard myth-busting will be complete. But if Lombard knocks Palhares out, look for the Boetsch thing to be relegated into the "Octagon Jitters" archive of revisionist history.

Fedor (Mother Russia)

I eat mop

alex (ct)

Do you see Edgar dominating 145 once Aldo moves up to 155. The cut is getting tough for him.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:44 PM)

No. But then again, maybe. Much depends on the outcome of Aldo/Edgar. It's confusing they way they are bouncing around weight classes. I think if Edgar hangs around 145 he could sustain himself very nicely near the top of the division. But dominate...I don't think so.

Nickel Steak (Boston)

You said in your piece today that if Diaz beats GSP it's less of a nightmare than Hendricks beating him. You think Diaz would toe the line if he won the belt?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:46 PM)

No, he'd be Nick Diaz. But that's not a bad thing in a rogue sport like MMA that feeds off of that kind of thing. Problem with Hendricks is, imagine him beating GSP. He's hard to market.

Avburk (San Francisco)

Hendo was the No. 1 contender at 205. Machida was next in line after his KO of Bader. Now Rua and Gustafsson are fighting for the No. 1 contender spot? How is that right?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:47 PM)

I supposed this is where I launch into an explanation about special considerations...but, Avburk. You got me. I have no idea how that's right.

JP (Denver)

Since the GSP-Silva fight is off the table for now, could that open the door for Silva-Jones (the fight more people seemed excited for anyway)?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:47 PM)

If Jones weren't engaged in this Sonnen thing until April, I'd say maybe. But that's not happening. My guess is Silva hangs tight, waits out Belfort/Bisping, and gets the winner.

Kris (Los Angeles)

Hey Chuck, with Diaz getting the title shot with GSP, what does that mean for Hendriks and Silva? Why not pair them off?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:48 PM)

Interesting idea, Kris. They serve each other's needs. And that would make for a compelling cross-divisional fight in my mind. Call Joe Silva and make the proposition. Catchweight of 179.

Aiden (Providence)

Top of the afternoon to you, Chuck. Was wondering if you were a fighter who would be in your corner?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:50 PM)

Obviously I'd have to go with Danzig. He is my spirit animal. Then I would go with Chad Dundas (I just like the cool under fire) and Lester Bangs (yes, I realize he's dead -- but it's my corner).

Marc (Malden, MA)

Happy to see Diaz-GSP. Happy to not see Silva-GSP.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:51 PM)

This is being echoed by a lot of fight fans, Marc. I can't complain about it. I like the fight.

Smokey (Compton)

I'm suprised not a single ESPN writer picked Diaz to beat Bendo. (0-6). The dude has a 6 inch reach advantage and better standup, and is dangerous off his back. Why no love?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:52 PM)

I am too. I went back and forth on it. I thought for sure Okamoto would go Diaz. He's been on that tip for a long time. That reach advantage should play a factor. But then again, Trevor Berbick had a seven-inch reach advantage on Mike Tyson and we saw how that played out.

Dustin (Omaha)

You know what? I believe I am a great fighter and I don't get any recognition... Just you wait watch for my name Dustin Quinata! Mark my words Chucky!!!

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:53 PM)

Dustin Quinata is now on the Mindenhall radar.

Carter (Chicago - Berwyn)

People who think BJ isn't going to receive a major beat down tomorrow are in for rude awakening...we've heard this "ready for the fight" crap from BJ before...3rd round TKO, via ground and pound for Rory....What say you Chucky?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:53 PM)

Can't argue. But then again...BJ works in mysterious ways. He does, Carter. Look it up.

Rick (Kansas)

In the spirits of this weeks awesome Bo Jackson 30 for 30, how would he have done in MMA?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:54 PM)

That cat was such a beast, I'd have to think he'd succeed at just about any sport he set his mind to.

Matt (NJ)

Calling it now...Frankie beats Aldo (way too many people assuming Aldo wins that fight), and Aldo moves up to LW and beats Henderson.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:55 PM)

Matt in New Jersey is on record. Aldo/Bendo would be a fun scrap.

Fedor (Mother Russia)

But seriously Chuck...Have you ever read 'Matterhorn'?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:55 PM)

I have not...I've asked for a copy to appear under my Christmas tree.

Ken (ca.)

From the looks of it, Rory MacDonald should be A. Silva's next opponent, guy is huge for a welterweight!!

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:56 PM)

I think that he'll end up at 185 pounds within the next year or two. He is a leviathan at 170. And he's fighting a guy who is probably a more natural lightweight.

tdiddy (winnipeg) [via mobile]

Merry Christmas chaz. I hope santa brings you a new "Andy Capp" cap this xmas. Great card this weekend and my question has to do with Gustaffson and "last minute replacement fighters". 1) Does Gus get a title shot with a win? 2) Iv'e always wondered if Dana tells guys that are coming off a impressive victory to "stay in shape" in case a last minute main event replacement fighter is needed? Meaning if Gus wins BIG does Dana tell him to be ready if Bones or Sonnen goes down?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:58 PM)

We are told that Gusty gets a title shot with a win. But that needs to be taken with a grain of salt since Jones/Sonnen are on deck for an April fight. Why wait more than half a year to get back in there? My guess is he'll have another fight before a title tilt. As for replacements, I doubt White does that (specifically), but I don't know for sure. The way TUF coaches have gone down in recent times, maybe they ARE telling him to keep his arm loose.

Matt (NJ)

Is there an athlete with more pressure right now than Rousey? In a sport where you can lose in a split second, one loss would essentially crush her hype, and probably crush women's MMA in the process.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (4:59 PM)

She's been under pressure before, like in that Tate headliner in Ohio. She's handled it well. I think she'll be alright. Bottom line is she's an incredible athlete and fighter. So far, nobody has challenged her.

Sean (monrovia, ca) [via mobile]

What's up chuck!? What's ur favorite sport? And I just graduated from culinary school, does Dana still hate me? and how can I get a job as a personal chef for BJ? Thanks!

Chuck Mindenhall
  (5:01 PM)

Other than MMA? I watch football and basketball. AS for the other questions, yes (Dana White hates all culinary anythings) and becoming BJ's chef requires a move to Hawaii. Are you sure you want to make that sacrifice?

Cameron (Auckland)

Hi Chuck, I think it was an ESPN report that had a story about GSP wanting a ridiculous amount (we're talking Manny / Floyd fighting money here) for the gig with Anderson. It also quoted a figure of around $8m which he got for fighting Condit. Is there logic and truth to these figures?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (5:02 PM)

I don't know the exact figures. He makes many millions. The number $50 million was introduced by Mike Straka on an episode of MMA Beat we did. St-Pierre claims that number isn't accurate. But who really knows? It's a fight he was never more than reluctant to take.

Dustin (Omaha)

How come everyone in espn is counting out Diaz? He look rejuvenated since his move back to lightweight...

Chuck Mindenhall
  (5:04 PM)

I'm definitely not counting him out. What he did to Cerrone and Jim Miller was pretty impressive. I was surprised that nobody picked Diaz, honestly. I went back and forth on it. It really comes down to who imposes their will (as cliche as that sounds).

Cam (Los Angeles)

Is it wrong for me to be disappointed in the the UFC 157 headliner? I wanted to get tickets for this event since it's local but Rousey will prob armbar her in 15 seconds plus ppv tix are always overpriced as is.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (5:05 PM)

It's a legit question. First round armbars are nice, but in this case, that might seem anticlimactic. But hey, Hendo/Machida could be a good one.

JP (Denver)

Brock Lesnar and Alistar Overeem vs. a Salt Water Crocodile... who wins?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (5:05 PM)

Oh, I really couldn't say. *blushes*

Trevor (Mpls)

Call me crazy, but I feel like BJ is a little over rated. He is def a great fighter, but just don't think he is an "all timer" as I've read various places over the years. All timers are Spider, GSP, Fedor, Hughes, etc...thoughts?

Chuck Mindenhall
  (5:10 PM)

Hey Trevor...just answered that, and then system crashed. In a nutshell here's what I said...he's had moments of greatness, but he's never been able to sustain it. To his credit, he hasn't fought a lot of cans. He's always fought the best guys. He's 5-5-1 in title fights at 170 and 155, which is a perfect pitch of mediocrity, and doesn't scream "great." But hey....11 title fights is something.

Chuck Mindenhall
  (5:11 PM)

Alright guys, this system is acting up. I'm going to bounce out. If I didn't get to your question, hit me on Twitter @ChuckMindenhall. Enjoy the fights tomorrow night.
