Chat with Heather Dinich

Heather Dinich
  (12:59 PM)

Hey guys, I'm here, let's go ...

Sam (Stratford, CT.)

With all that is going on in conference shuffling, where do you see Uconn in the next 5 years--the ACC, the Big Whatever (where it is now), or somewhere else?? Thanks.

Heather Dinich
  (1:00 PM)

Sam, it's hard to see an end to this right now, so I'm going to guess UConn winds up in the ACC at some point.

Tim [via mobile]

What's the key to a clemson win vs LSU

Heather Dinich
  (1:01 PM)

I think it's the same as it was against South Carolina ... the o-line against the LSU d-line. They've got to be able to hold those guys off and give Boyd time and room to work.

Nick (New Mexico )

How active do you think the Big Ten is looking to add more teams (Virginia and Georgia Tech)?

Heather Dinich
  (1:02 PM)

I think it's quiet now, but like I just said, I'm not convinced it's over. All we have to go on right now is what's coming out of the ACC presidents' offices, and that's a commitment to solidarity right now. It's just like recruiting, though .. just because a guy is committed to FSU doesn't mean Florida is going to stop courting him until the letter is signed.

jeff [via mobile]

2013 acc rankings. Go!

Heather Dinich
  (1:03 PM)

1. Clemson, 2. Florida State, 3. Everybody else.

Matt (Winston-Salem)

HD, the "wait 'til next year" chants are in full effect, already, from FSU fans. Seem strange considering they will feature a QB that Jimbo didn't feel comfortable turning to at any point this season? Thanks for your time.

Heather Dinich
  (1:03 PM)

Hmm, I think you and I are talking to different FSU fans, Matt, because I keep hearing from ones who are disgruntled.

Howie DeWitt (Boise)

If Morris goes, Boyd goes. Agree/disagree?

Heather Dinich
  (1:04 PM)

I think they both stay.

Mike (Cocoa)

Are there gonna be any high rated prospects staying in the ACC over leaving this April?

Heather Dinich
  (1:04 PM)

Who knows. I doubt any high-rated guys (first round, high second) stick around, but you never know.

Will (Blacksburg)

Bigger surprise: VT Football season or VT basketball season

Heather Dinich
  (1:06 PM)

Definitely football. Hokies' hoops are 7-1, though, does that make up for it? Probably not, if you're a Hokie. Am I right?

kevin (North Carolina) [via mobile]

Thoughts on Duke for next year. Jeremy cash looks like a stud. Also the switch to Boone.

Heather Dinich
  (1:07 PM)

Duke set the standard this year. Wake Forest knows what it's like to raise expectations. So does Mike London. Duke fans should expect to get to a bowl again next year, not take a step back, but the entire division should be better. Actually contending for the title will be a reach.

Scott (South Fla)

What's going on with the Canes recruiting? I know they only have a few slots, but no one is committing. Can't be only about possible sanctions, can it?

Heather Dinich
  (1:08 PM)

ONLY about possible sanctions? We're not talking about taking away their TVs in the players' lounge here.

john (clemson sc ) [via mobile]

If clemson can beat LSU and i do believe they can where would they be ranked coming into next year (top 10 or top 5

Heather Dinich
  (1:09 PM)

That's hard for me to answer without looking closer at who everyone else in the country has coming back, but I would think they'd be top 10, around 7.

vtman09 (Middle of Nowhere Covington,VA)

Do you think VT fans will show up at the bowl game? I know I'm kind of sick of the bowl games being in Florida/Louisiana.

Heather Dinich
  (1:10 PM)

Hey at least you guys get to go to a bowl game this year. It's the bowl that almost wasn't. I think some fans will go, but I don't think it will be nearly as well attended as their bowl games have been in the past. What say you, Hokies? You gonna travel?

Jack (Blacksburg)

Looking over the defensive roster, we only "have" to lose Bruce Taylor. If everyone else stays and with the addition of Kendall Fuller, will VT's defense be back to its former glory?

Heather Dinich
  (1:11 PM)

Jack I thought this could have been a special year for that defense, so who knows. It was a surprisingly rough year for that group.

Hawk (Columbia)

If FSU loses to NIU how much does that impact ACC? Same question regarding Clemson losing to LSU.

Heather Dinich
  (1:13 PM)

Clemson losing to LSU will be expected, so that's a wash unless Tigers win. If FSU loses to NIU, the world as we know it in the ACC will come crashing down. Or something like that.

Jim (Tallahassee)

Hey Heather. I'm not sure who will be our (FSU) quarterback next year. I don't think Trickett is the answer. Who do you think will be our starting QB?

Heather Dinich
  (1:13 PM)

My honest answer is that it's something that's going to play out this offseason and will be one of the more interesting storylines in the ACC through spring/summer camp.

John (Davie, Fl)

What do you think of the Dave Doerne hire at NCSU?

Heather Dinich
  (1:15 PM)

I don't know him yet, so I can't speak about him personally, but based on what he has accomplished I think it was a good hire done quickly. He's going to have to make use of those recruiting ties in Florida to bring in better recruits and make Debbie Yow happy, but at the same time has to win the in-state battle. This is a hire in which recruiting will be the most interesting storyline as it unfolds because that was one of the biggest differences between Yow and Tom O'Brien.

yehonala04 (St. Augustine ,Fl)

Whom are you anxious to watch next year in the cinference

Heather Dinich
  (1:16 PM)

Miami QB Stephen Morris. I think he's got a real chance to be a star for a contending team. If, of course, the NCAA doesn't lay the smack down on the postseason.

Ed (New Jersey)

Hey HD, great work as always. Any thoughts/opinions on Addazio at BC? L

Heather Dinich
  (1:18 PM)

Thx, Ed. Love his energy and enthusiasm. Very refreshing and much-needed. That being said, considering his history, I'm not sure I'm sold on the "dream job" line. Call me jaded, but I've heard it before. From lots of coaches. Everywhere.

Ethan (NY)

What do you think the Hokies' record will be next season? Where will they end in the division standings?

Heather Dinich
  (1:19 PM)

I think they'll have a MUCH better season, but Miami is my pick to win the Coastal.

jander75 (the ACCylum)

The OC at VT in 2013 will be...?

Heather Dinich
  (1:19 PM)

I tried to get it out of Frank for you when I was in Orlando last week, really I did, but he wouldn't budge, sorry.

Mike (Saratoga NY)

Heather, you speak highly of Clemson for next year. Do you see their defense improving enough to keep them in a game if the offense sputters?

Heather Dinich
  (1:20 PM)

It has to, Mike. That's the expectation. In Year 2 under Venables they should be more comfortable with him and his philosophies, etc.

Robb Dayton Ohio [via mobile]

Will a lose to Rutgers( and a losing season) force Beamer's hand in coaching changes?

Heather Dinich
  (1:21 PM)

Would be the first losing season since 1992. I would be really surprised if something didn't change. He has shown before he is willing to change (O'Cain calling plays, Hite to office, etc.).

Mike (Saratoga NY)

Seems like every year there is a guy who comes from no where and lands on the national radar, like Johnny Football. Is there anyone in the ACC with that potential?

Heather Dinich
  (1:22 PM)

That would be great, wouldn't it? Look at what a splash Duke Johnson made as a freshman. Can't wait to see what he does next year. There's a reason no freshmen has won the Heisman until this past weekend, though, Mike. Johnny Footballs just don't come around too often.

Eric (Petersburg, VA)

Coaches already on the hot seat for next year are...

Heather Dinich
  (1:23 PM)

I'd say Paul Johnson, but I really truly believe they will be better.

Bob (Atlanta)

Hey Heather....a week or so ago, you made a comment that you expected Miami to win the ACC next year. However, in one of your first posts today, you were asked for the 2013 ACC rankings, for which you replied "...1. Clemson, 2. Florida State, 3. Everybody else."....So which is it??

Heather Dinich
  (1:24 PM)

Yep, that's it, Bob ... you can go ahead and throw Miami in at No. 3. Whether or not they beat Clemson in the ACCCG will be up for debate, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to stick with that matchup.

Eric (Miami)

Can you give me a 2013 Heisman preview? Would it include Duke Johnson and/or Stephen Morris?

Heather Dinich
  (1:26 PM)

I think you have to start with Tajh Boyd and Giovani Bernard if they're both back, but both Canes could work their way on the list, and if I had to name five to start, I have no problem including them, but that's an all-ACC list, not national. On a national list, I think Boyd starts out as the ACC's lone contender.

boone (accylum)

I feel TOB should be allowed to coach his team in the bowl.game. How do you feel about it?

Heather Dinich
  (1:26 PM)

I think it's awkward. Once you're fired, do you really want to hang around?

David (New York)

What's order of business #1 for Addazio? To me, it's recruit, recruit, recruit. The talent drop off at BC the last couple of years has been stark.

Heather Dinich
  (1:27 PM)

You nailed it. No question about it. They've got to get strong up front, and they've got to get back to playing dominant defense.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What College Football Bowl Game are you looikng forward seeing this season?

Heather Dinich
  (1:29 PM)

Aside from the national championship, I think the Clemson-LSU game is the best of at least the ACC's lineup.

Eric (Richmond, VA)

Do you think Logan Thomas should stay at VT one more year? Thanks!

Heather Dinich
  (1:30 PM)

No question about it. His stock dropped dramatically. He should only have a better season this year, especially as the guys around him get better.

Matthew (Boston)

Heather, I don't understand why being a "destination" job is suddenly such a big criteria for coaches. In reality, there are very such jobs (Saban left LSU, Meyer, left UF, Carroll left USC, etc.) and in order to use somewhere as a springboard, you have to have success there. I ask because as a BC fan, it seems that BC being Addazio's "dream job" carried some weight with Brad Bates. I could not care less if it's a dream job and judge Addazio purely by whether he was the best guy BC could get. By that standard, a 50+ year old coach coming off of a 4-win year that was not pursued by any other school is a very underwhelming hire to me.

Heather Dinich
  (1:32 PM)

I don't think you're alone in that perspective, Matthew. Have heard similar from other BC fans, but don't forget that Temple was competing in the Big East with MAC players. I know some of you are rolling your eyes, but really there is a difference level in talent there. I also think it was smarter to hire a guy with head coaching experience as opposed to, say, a popular coordinator who has yet to be the CEO of a program. Let's see what he can do.

Adam (New York)

With a lot of value back, will the Canes be a preseason top 25 and can they win the ACC Next Year

Heather Dinich
  (1:33 PM)

I don't think they'll be a preseason top 25 because of public perception right now, but as far as talent goes? I have no problem ranking them in mine.

Charles (Lexington KY)

What are the chances MD bolts and Louisville is in to start next season?

Heather Dinich
  (1:34 PM)

It doesn't seem logical. They announced their intent to play in the ACC next season, and with a lawsuit pending, there's no way outta that right now.

Tigger (Charleston)

Heard Chad Morris' name linked to openings at S Miss, La Tech and now Texas Tech..... what are the chances he takes one of them and if so... do you think that effects Boyd's decision to return or not?

Heather Dinich
  (1:35 PM)

I know he wants to be a head coach, but it has to be the right spot. He's got it really, REALLY good at Clemson right now. As for he and Boyd, I would think that Tajh's draft stock would weigh on his decision more.

John (Louisville, Ky)

How do you see Uofl fairing its first season in the conference, assuming Strong stays and there is not a huge change in staff?

Heather Dinich
  (1:36 PM)

Let's go back to those rankings ... 1. Clemson, 2. Florida State, 3. Louisville, 4. Everybody else. Andrea Adelson will answer that question for you in greater detail at some point here soon, but that's my take on it.

Kenny (NC)

I believe Gio will be back next year, what is your guess?

Heather Dinich
  (1:37 PM)

My guess is yes, but that's just pure speculation. With his best blocker gone (Jonathan Cooper) who knows?

circus (florida)

Wait a minute you just said miami in the 3 spot:( poor canes...

Heather Dinich
  (1:38 PM)

Yeah, that was before Louisville joined the ACC, sorry :)

Chickens Taste Delicious (Clemson)

You're giving the Tigers a lot of love today, HD! Go ahead and say it... Clemson Tigers, 2013 National Champs!

Heather Dinich
  (1:38 PM)

Lol, start up the hype machine, guys ...

Hawk (Columbia)

How many ACC teams do you think are legitimate top 25 teams this year and preaseson next and who?

Heather Dinich
  (1:40 PM)

Is there ANY "legit" preseason top 25? Look what happened to the Hokies this year! I'd say Clemson and FSU to start and that's it. The rest of the ACC has LOT to prove. No reason for anyone to dump credit on the league in the preseason.

Willy (Loveland, CO)

The Heisman Trophy has become a sham, it is nothing but a popularity contest. I am not a avid sports fan but i know asham when i see one. To pick a Freshman over two seasond and established Seniors with better stats and track record is nothing more then a popularity contest. A Freshman should never be elegible for the trophy, they have not proven them selfs yet.

Heather Dinich
  (1:41 PM)

Johnny Manziel wouldn't have gone to NY if he didn't prove himself (uh, win over Alabama?) but I will say that I would have voted for Te'o.

Mike (Cocoa)

When UL joins, and possibly another addition, do you think the ACC would be smart enough to have a realignment within the conference instead of having FSU, UL, and CU all in the Atlantic?

Heather Dinich
  (1:42 PM)

No. Because as soon as you do that, one of them has a year that VT has and tanks. It's cliche, but it's true - these things go in cycles.

corey (NYC)

from a coast-to-coast standpoint, who do you think is the most hated team in college football?

Heather Dinich
  (1:42 PM)

Wow, that's a great question. What do you guys think? Notre Dame? Alabama?

PJ (Fredericksburg)

Heather,I do believe that Hokie fans will travel to Orlando. Never played there before and will be a warm destination. With that said, do you think that VT can eventually be a perennial Top 10 team if they were to upgrade at OC? Personally, I think Bud Foster is one of the Top 5 DC in the nation.

Heather Dinich
  (1:43 PM)

They've been a consistent top 15/top 20 team. It's not like they have far to go. But yes, they need a change at OC and they need some good recruiting classes.

Jim (Tallahassee)

Should NIU be in the Orange Bowl? I've been to the last couple of Bowl games that FSU was in but not this year.

Heather Dinich
  (1:44 PM)

Yes, I think they should, Jim. They earned it.

Drew (Blacksburg)

If VT beats Alabama ( huge if) already a better season then this one

Heather Dinich
  (1:45 PM)

So you're saying there's a chance ...

Chickens Taste Delicious (Clemson)

Most hated team in college football? SOUTH CAROLINA. Nobody likes them but their own delusional fans. At least Alabama and ND have bandwagon fans across the country!

Heather Dinich
  (1:46 PM)

Lol Clemson fan still mad about those losses.

William (Greensboro, NC)

Heather, how do you feel about Duke's program in the future, will they contend for the conference even if it isn't down?

Heather Dinich
  (1:47 PM)

Only if they continue to recruit better. They've made strides, no doubt, and it was evident this year because they were able to survive so many injuries where in years past that never would have happened. Miami and North Carolina (sorry Hokies) are their two biggest obstacles right now.

chief (work)

why is Jimbo waiting so long to hire a DC, a DE coach, and possibly a OC? I mean who's coaching the D in practice for the bowl game.......Bjorn?

Heather Dinich
  (1:49 PM)

What's the rush? It's not like FSU is going to change schemes, philosophies, terminology, etc., right before a bowl game, I don't care who it's against.

sgtmgd (Fort BRagg NC)

Should FSU schedule better...non conference opponents..and get back to taking on anyone?

Heather Dinich
  (1:50 PM)

Yep. You've gotta have one creampuff. Schedule it before the FLorida game. GT is doing that next year before the UGA game I believe. But play one big boy, and one Big East level team or something. Then it's a legit SOS.

Bubble Boy (VA)

Heather, with all the money being poored into college football: the stadium upgrades, the booster influence, the media money and exposure, the conference shuffles, the rabid fandimonium....when does it become all too much and the bubble starts to burst???

Heather Dinich
  (1:52 PM)

And here I thought I was the only one concerned about this. It's taken on a whole new life like I've never seen. Personally, I'd love for it to stop.

Brandon (Phoenix, AZ)

To figure out who is hated the most, you have to see who the message boards are talking about as well as the ratings. Fans who hate teams want to see them lose so they will watch. No question that has to be ND. They are they most polarizing team in college football. Hate em or Love em, that Bama/ND is going to be awesome and will have monster ratings.

Heather Dinich
  (1:53 PM)

Good answer. I can't believe more of you haven't responded to that "most hated team" question.

Gibs (Strozier library)

Saw where you ranked Clemson ahead of FSU in the 2013 rankings... You have seen Clemson's defense haven't you? Or are you still just a FSU hater?

Heather Dinich
  (1:53 PM)

Last I checked, I picked FSU to beat Florida this year ...

John (Chicago)

With new coaches in place, a promise to spend money on facilities, decent recruiting, this feels like the 'bottom out' year for the ACC. Also, despite Maryland leaving, the rest 'sound' committed...Good things on the horizon for ACC football or am I delusional....again?

Heather Dinich
  (1:54 PM)

You would think this had to be rock bottom, right? I'm trying really hard to believe that, John, and the ACC and its presidents have done everything but go door to door to convince ACC fans of that. Maryland started the unease, though, and until this lawsuit is settled, I think there is still reason to be concerned. What if Terps somehow find a way to leave for $20 million?

Mickey (TN)

How much does Miami's stadium and lack of fan support hurt them in recruting? If I am a 5 star stud i want to play in front of 70-80k, not 20-30k.

Heather Dinich
  (1:55 PM)

Al Golden will sell you on playing in an NFL stadium. For some guys, that works.

Gary (Memphis TN)

Do you ever see FSU going to the SEC? I think it would be a huge opportunity for them in recruiting and the SEC in making it even stronger.

Heather Dinich
  (1:56 PM)

FSU recruits in SEC territory and against the SEC everyday now. That wouldn't change. What would change are FSU's overall paycheck (up) and its chances of playing for a national title (down).

SOS (San Antonio)

FSU had Murray St, WVU, S Florida and Florida before WVU somehow needed two bye weeks to get stomped by Baylor and K State. Why do you think FSU is still getting flogged for scheduling when it wasnt in their control? The NIU thing isnt going to help.

Heather Dinich
  (1:57 PM)

I know the WVU thing wasn't their fault, really I do. But I also think they took a hit this year because the rest of the ACC was so weak.

Jeff (Burlington, NC)

Hey Heather! Love your work but how about a Carolina question. With Bryn Renner coming back and Gio Bernard likely to return, what are your thoughs of North Carolina possibly winning the conference and getting to a BCS bowl...Bernard is unstoppable, Renner will have a whole year of Fedoras fed-spread, plenty of athletes returning, and the defense should continue to improve...any love for the heels?!?!

Heather Dinich
  (1:58 PM)

Yes, yes, yes, I think Miami and UNC should start out as the frontrunners for that division. Cooper is going to be a big loss on the o-line. I think Miami might have a better o-line next year, and I think the Canes will have the better QB.

SOS (San Antonio)

Most hated team? Pick one from the SEC. Your bound to get it right.

Heather Dinich
  (1:59 PM)

I figured as much on this chat.

Brandon (Phoenix, AZ)

FSU has a much better shot at the Big Ten then they do the SEC. IF FSU moves it's going to the Big 12 or Big Ten. SEC doesn't need FSU. they have the Florida market with UF

Heather Dinich
  (1:59 PM)

More importantly, I would think UF would do everything in its power to keep FSU out.

Timbo (Greenville, SC)

The ACC kind of screwed up with the "9-conference-games, oh wait no, back to 8!" shenanigans. Clemson now has 2 FCS teams on the schedule because of having to cancel a home-and-home series. How do you see that affecting SOS for ACC teams?

Heather Dinich
  (2:00 PM)

Yes, very good point, I know that switch left most if not all schools scrambling this year. It could be a rather ho-hum schedule come February, but hey, the good news? More teams should be bowl eligible! *sarcasm

Heather Dinich
  (2:00 PM)

Ok guys, my time here is up. Thanks for joining me today. See you next week!
