Chat with David Ubben

David Ubben
  (3:01 PM)

Hey, everybody. Let's get started. What's on your minds?

Ray Stinger Jr (Pittsburgh)

Hey, David! Any chance that "high octane" Todd Graham will leave ASU for another dream job at Texas Tech?

David Ubben
  (3:02 PM)

Ha. Hilarious as that would be, no.

Collin Klein (Manhattan, Ks)

Hey Ubbtimus, what should I do to be successful at the next level? I would really love to be an NFL QB but I hear all the talk about needing to convert to a TE to be more successful, but I would really like to convert to a RB before a TE! What are your thoughts and opinions on this? Thank you much Ubben keep up all the hard work!!!

David Ubben
  (3:03 PM)

No, RB wouldn't work. Klein doesn't have the speed or shiftiness necessary, even though he can read holes well. He's got great size and good hands with OK speed, and that reads TE or possession receiver. He'll have to learn to block, but to me, that's where his future is the clearest.

TTUfan [via mobile]

I had a question regarding the future of Texas tech on whether they will be a big12 title contender in the near future?

David Ubben
  (3:03 PM)

Depends heavily on who they hire. I think Morris is the better coach right now, and certainly more experienced, but Kingsbury may well have the higher upside.

Brendan (Austin)

Hey Ubbs! Indications are that TTU is most seriously considering Kliff Kingsbury or Chad Morris as their next coach. Simple question: Who do you think Tech will hire and who SHOULD they hire?

David Ubben
  (3:04 PM)

On the field, I think both will be successful. However, what Kingsbury could do in uniting the fan base and inspiring genuine excitement can't be ignored. I think fans would be happy with both, but if I was Tech, I'd probably take the risk and go with Kingsbury.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who will be the First Big-12 Team to Play in a Bowl Game this season?

David Ubben
  (3:05 PM)

Baylor takes on UCLA in a late game in the Holiday Bowl. That's Dec. 27.

Andy (Dayton)

Would the Big 12 be an unstopable force if Cincinnatti joined, with the recruiting post in Ohio could the teams challenge SEC supremacy

David Ubben
  (3:05 PM)

No.

Michael (Waco)

Why is your reason for Terrance Williams not winning the Biletnikoff Award? How does Baylor do in the Holiday Bowl? And will Terrance Williams be a First Round Draft Pick?

David Ubben
  (3:07 PM)

People were enamored with Marqise Lee's skills. You could probably make a case for him as the most talented guy in that group, though Williams and Bailey were more productive. All three truly deserved it. That's rare. Baylor in the Holiday Bowl is a toss-up. If the Bears play well and the defense plays like it did the last month of the season, they'll win. Yes, Williams will be a first-round pick. Will wow scouts at the combine and pro day.

David Ubben
  (3:08 PM)

A lot of A&M questions in the queue, y'all. This is the Big 12 chat. Come on, now.

James (Waco)

If ifs and buts where candies and nuts would Oklahoma State be in the real/now fake cotton bowl?

David Ubben
  (3:09 PM)

Well, no. Oklahoma would have been kicked out the BCS regardless of what happened to OSU. If it beat Baylor, though, it would be in the Alamo Bowl, instead of Texas.

Lache Seastrunk (Waco, TX)

True or False. I will make it 3 in a row for Heismans from Hwy 6 in Central Texas.

David Ubben
  (3:10 PM)

False, but first-team All-Big 12 isn't a bad consolation prize is it? All-American, maybe? It's a QB's world we live in.

Colton P (Morgantown, WV)

Hey Ubbs, could you explain your reasoning for picking Terrance Williams over Steddy B for the Biletnikoff when Bailey had nearly double the number of touchdowns as Williams? Somehow 200 yards doesn't seem to make up for that.

David Ubben
  (3:12 PM)

My biggest thing: Baylor had an actual running game. WVU did not. Everytime WVU got in the red zone, it seemed like Bailey got the looks. WVU had to do that, because it couldn't run the ball. Baylor didn't. The Bears could run it, and Williams is a much bigger deep threat. Way scarier for defenses, and a tougher cover for DBs because of his size. The touchdowns were great, but inflated because of WVU's inability to run the ball in tight spots.

James (Waco)

Do you think UCLA knows how good of a team they have coming in their backyard to play them?

David Ubben
  (3:12 PM)

I would say yes, the team does. Its fans probably do not.

Benadore (Chicago)

Should Dana Holgornsen be worried about his job if he goes 7-5 again next year?

David Ubben
  (3:13 PM)

No. WVU's going to be rebuilding next year. We'll see how they look in the spring, but 7-5 will probably be about the expectation. They'll likely lose their three best players in Geno, Tavon and Stedman if he goes pro early.

Allan (Stillwater)

With the departure of Todd Monken, is it safe to assume that LaQuon Treadwell wont be committing to OSU? How big of a recruiting impact will Monken leaving have?

David Ubben
  (3:14 PM)

Definitely hurts. No doubt about that. There's already an alert that Lunt may leave. The brief little trickle down the Illinois pipeline will be tough to continue. Monken made that happen.

Trey (OKC)

Rubba Dub Ubbs-When was the last time a team had to play EVERY Heisman finalist in ONE season? OU will have played every Heisman finalist by the end of this season.I can't recall a year when this has happened.

David Ubben
  (3:14 PM)

Great question. I really don't know, but it's one of the best fun facts of the year. I'll ask around this week and see what I come up with.

CycloneLunchLinks (Iowa)

David, you said in your bowl preview that you would only watch the Tulsa-ISU bowl game because your job forced you to. How would you say it ranks among other distatsteful things you have to do for your job, such as scrubbing the ESPN toilets or getting coffee for Skip Bayless?

David Ubben
  (3:17 PM)

Haha. The ISU faithful were mad about that comment. Hey, it's nothing against ISU. I just already saw this game, and it wasn't great. Not really looking forward to seeing it again. Tulsa doesn't offer much intrigue or guys who I want to see matchup against the Big 12. And sorry, I haven't had to do any of the things you mentioned.

W (Anaheim)

David - If you ran an NFL team, would you draft Optimus Klein?

David Ubben
  (3:18 PM)

Yes.

Joseph Randle (Stillwater)

Should I go pro or stay and help OSU go for another Big 12 title?

David Ubben
  (3:18 PM)

I'll address this on the blog later.

Benadore (Chicago)

Andy Reid to TTU, its out of the box, but he will be free by seasons end, and can recruit on preparing players for the NFL, more than nearly any current college coach could.

David Ubben
  (3:18 PM)

Silly. No.

Bob (Costas)

Is one of OSU's QBs going to Southern Miss with Monken?

David Ubben
  (3:19 PM)

No, but if Clint Chelf doesn't win the QB job in the spring and graduates as scheduled, he'll have the option to go elsewhere and play right away. I wouldn't be shocked to see him use it. He could start for a lot of teams.

Brock (Oklahoma)

Does Jalen Saunders play in the bowl game and serve his suspension next year or do you think Stoops makes him sit out the bowl game and a few games next year?

David Ubben
  (3:20 PM)

I'd be very, very surprised if Saunders played in the bowl. No official word yet, but I don't see how you can let him play after that. I don't expect any punishment to carry over to 2013, though.

Eric (Manhattan, Kansas)

We've all seen the disrespect towards Klein and K-State in general and for those of us around the program, for a long time. Which has been worse? Snyder being snubbed in the national coaching awards or Klein with the awards he has been up for?

David Ubben
  (3:21 PM)

Nothing was really disrespect. Tough competition for all of those. K-State people can focus on their own team and be mad, but you could definitely make a case for Bill O'Brien or Kevin Sumlin as the coach of the year. Urban Meyer, too. Snyder's in the mix, but he's not been clearly better this year. He would have been if they were undefeated. K-State isn't.

Rainy (Olahoma)

Texas A&M has given up more passing yards in the SEC this year than OU has in what is obviously the best offensive league in the nation. That should be a troubling sign for the Aggies. If it comes to a shootout, the Sooners will have the advantage big time. Landry should shred the Aggie secondary and the running game should do pretty well also. Yeah, the Sooners' defense has had some flukes this year, but they won their flukes where the Aggies didn't. Teams have shown that Manziel can be stopped or at least slowed and he has flopped in 2 of the 3 big games he played this year. OU doesn't need to completely shut him down to win. Also, Bobby Stoops has a really, really good record vs. his former assistants.

David Ubben
  (3:22 PM)

All valid points. A&M is the better team on paper, but they were the better team on paper in like, uh, almost every game last year. And went 6-6. New staff, but there's been lots of time and reasons for distractions since the end of the season. OU will have a good shot to win.

Casey (Fort Worth) [via mobile]

Ubbs, I've gone through rehab and I have applied to re-enroll at TCU. If Gary lets me back on the team, I will do everything I can to win back my job as starting QB. With me at the helm and the plethora of offensive weapons coming back, not to mention our #1 rated D, can we not only challenge for the big 12 title but for the NCG game in 2013?

David Ubben
  (3:24 PM)

Not entirely out of the question, no. Unlikely, sure. But so was K-State this time last year.

OUwoofer (Houston Tx)

OSU has lost their OC. How long till we see decomits? oh wait, never mind. Who is next to decomit?

David Ubben
  (3:25 PM)

I don't expect OSU to lose anyone else. Recruiting is a bit different for QBs.

Scott (Austin)

People are saying K State has no chance against Oregon's speed. Are they slower than Stanford or are "people" ignorant.Bonus: Who should a Longhorns fan cheer for...Aggies or Sooners?

David Ubben
  (3:26 PM)

Solid comparison, Scott. It'll be a fun game. Tough matchup for K-State, no doubt. But they're not going to just get run out of the stadium by the speed. The Aggies already have tons of momentum on the recruiting trail. Losses are the only thing that can slow that. You'd be better off cheering for OU in that one.

Stud (Shanty Town)

Can Nick Florence succeed in the NFL if he lands the opportunity??

David Ubben
  (3:27 PM)

Yes.

Leonardo (WV)

Surprised that Daron Roberts was terminated? Do you expect other changes?

David Ubben
  (3:27 PM)

No. He's a smart guy, obviously, but changes needed to be made. He obviously felt Roberts wasn't getting it done. Yes to that last question on Florence, btw. I don't think my answer went through.

Switzer (Norman Ok)

Just wanted to get it out there that I had nothing to do with the Joe Powell incident.

David Ubben
  (3:28 PM)

Thanks, Barry. Noted.

Leonardo (WV)

The team most likely to develop a rivalry with West Virginia?

David Ubben
  (3:29 PM)

Texas Tech for obvious reasons. Oklahoma State, too. Baylor because these two may have tons of shootouts for the foreseeable future. The league's two best offensive minds, in my book: Holgorsen and Briles.

Dave (Dallas)

Is there a reason Briles would want to stay at Baylor other than the fact that the job is well paying, with little pressure to produce results? If he can win at Baylor, he can win much bigger at a school like TTU, the TTU job just brings actual pressure to produce wins. Thoughts?

David Ubben
  (3:30 PM)

No, Briles has made it clear he believes he can build something big at Baylor. The university has supported him and he's produced results past anything they could have expected. Yes, the expectations are lower, but Briles already has big pieces in place to build something special there. He wants to see it through.

Tom T. (Cincinnatti, OH)

I am totally committed to staying at . . . (psst, what's the name of this school again?) . . . for the long haul. They'll have to carry me out in a pine box. As long as that box delivers me safely to the next school I plan to coach.

David Ubben
  (3:31 PM)

I didn't say it. Ha.

Eric (Austin)

Tyroone Swoopes: Buy or Sell?

David Ubben
  (3:31 PM)

Way too early. Let's see how he does once he enrolls this spring. I want to see him in person, too. Get back to me in a few months.

Darwish Sabir Ismael Gani (Pawnee, Indiana)

If you were a hotdog, would you eat yourself?

David Ubben
  (3:32 PM)

It's a simple question. If the moon were made of spare ribs, though, I would most definitely eat it.

Verrett (Fort Worth)

How does a player with better numbers in league that is much better at passing get snubbed to 3rd team AA?

David Ubben
  (3:32 PM)

Don't ask me. I'm as big of a Verrett fan as it gets. Guy's a stud.

Coconut Pete (FW)

Please explain to me how, when TCU was going through the whole "drug bust", it was deemed by the media as a team scandal and Gary Patterson had "lost control" of his team. Now, at OU, you have 2 players that were just busted for weed possession and a player facing felony drug charges. Where is the media firestorm over that? I don't think they should receive any backlash bc it goes on at all schools, but TCU went through the ringer when it happened. Seems a little bias to me, bc from the outside, it would seem like OU has the same "problem". Is it bc TCU is more low profile or what? Thx.

David Ubben
  (3:34 PM)

No, TCU had four players involved in the drug trade that were part of a huge campus sting. OU had one player busted for possession, which isn't the same thing, and one other player busted for intent to distribute. Lots of players get in trouble for possession. Not very many get busted with four pounds, which is clearly intent to distribute. Not the same at all. Cops also caught TCU players dealing red-handed.

Casey Pachall (Fort Worth)

If I come back is TCU the B12 favorite, considering the entire defense returning and we add Waymon James and Aaron Green?

David Ubben
  (3:35 PM)

Those guys are definitely getting overlooked. Green smells a lot like Lache Seastrunk. He may get eased in to start, but he's got potential to do things nobody else on the roster can do.

Baylor Erik (Lubbock)

Do you think the Ags owe Baylor a thank-you-card for giving Manziel the Heisman? At least no hard feelings about that whole we-might-sue-your-a**-off thing a coupla years ago?

David Ubben
  (3:35 PM)

Perhaps, yes.

Lunt, Wes Lunt (Shaken Not Stirred)

Do I start our bowl game??

David Ubben
  (3:36 PM)

No. Chelf.

Eugene Smith (Morgantown, WV)

I've never been one for popularity contests...I let my play speak for itself to the tune of 350 for 490 for 4004 yards and a 71.4% completion rate, and 40 TD's against 6 INT's for a final passer rating of 164.6. Yet you thought Klein was a better QB. See ya at the Combine, Ubbs.#1 QB in the class signing out.

David Ubben
  (3:36 PM)

Can't discount rushing yards, controlling games and wins. And about that head-to-head matchup ...

David Ubben
  (3:36 PM)

I don't really give a crap about NFL potential when it comes to All-Big 12 teams.

Tim (Austin)

Should Baylor Make "We own Kansas" T-Shirts??

David Ubben
  (3:38 PM)

Ha. I don't think so. Doesn't quite carry the same weight as "Texas State Champs."

David Ubben
  (3:38 PM)

Especially when one of those teams is 1-11.

dc85 (Dallas)

Who is a better passer Klein or Tebow?

David Ubben
  (3:38 PM)

Tebow.

Chad (I-State)

Ubs, I heard ISU has sold about 13,000 tickets from fans and another 1,800 from students for there bowl game and UNI/FSU for Orange Bowl haven't sold that many COMBINED... your thoughts?

David Ubben
  (3:39 PM)

ISU loves going to bowls and has a pretty decent-sized fan base.

Eric (Austin)

Should I be excited for Daje Johnson?

David Ubben
  (3:40 PM)

Yes, but only if Texas coaches get him and Monroe the ball more. I will never understand UT's reluctance to get the ball to their best guys in space.

Rob (Alabama)

Does Baylor shift to a Run First team Next year??

David Ubben
  (3:41 PM)

No. It'll be able to run the ball, but don't be at all surprised if Bryce Petty is better than Nick Florence. He's got more physical skills. We'll see about his decision-making.

Kirby Hocutt (Lubbock)

How big of an idiot I'm i to not see what was coming?

David Ubben
  (3:41 PM)

I'm not going to blame him. You can't live life being skeptical constantly of your highest-paid, highest-profile employee. If he tells you he's committed, and he's not, that's on him, not you. No shame in it for Hocutt.

wvfin (hard at work)

Do you see Millard or Childress taking over for Geno next year?

David Ubben
  (3:42 PM)

Will be close. Hopes are high for Childress. Both should be solid. If I was betting, I'd probably go Childress by a hair.

Stephen (Houston)

Ubbs, did you know that you were quoted on Baylor's website for the new stadium?

David Ubben
  (3:42 PM)

I did not. Somebody's gotta shoot me a link.

Nick (Iowa)

Who do you think will start at QB for the Cyclones in the Liberty Bowl? How do you think the one that starts will perform? I hear Tulsa has a pretty pathetic defense.

David Ubben
  (3:43 PM)

No question it's got to be Sam Richardson. He'll play well.

Tech (Lubbock)

Will naymore recruits decommit? And do you see Kaufman leaving as well?

David Ubben
  (3:44 PM)

We'll see about Kaufman. Tuberville reportedly wants his whole defensive staff to come with him. Nothing's guaranteed for Tech. I'd expect a few more decommits. It's natural.

dc85 (Dallas)

Please give us a State of Texas power ranking... All conferences included... You can do a top 5 if you prefer..

David Ubben
  (3:46 PM)

Haha. 1) A&M 2) Baylor 3) TCU 4) Texas 5) Tech

bill (Belton)

Do you think Micheal Brewer will be the next big QB at Texas Tech?

David Ubben
  (3:47 PM)

Yes. Big career ahead.

Dude (Kansas)

I view Tuberville to cincy as a lateral move at best. Truth? Am I missing something about that whole situation? Was he just really unhappy in Lubbock? How many questions can i ask before it's too many questions?

David Ubben
  (3:49 PM)

Combination of things. No, Cincy is a step down from Tech. Easily. But Tuberville might have been fired with another 7-5 season at Tech. His wife's family is also from the area, and he clearly wasn't in love with West Texas. All added up to him leaving.

David Ash (Austin)

Texas is signing a JUCO quarterback. Do I transfer schools?

David Ubben
  (3:50 PM)

No. Consider it insurance. Some added competition. Ash is the guy for now ... unless he isn't. If that makes sense.

Justin (Manhattan)

Should we just call the Heisman trophy the "What have you done for me lately?" trophy? It seems that Te'o and Klein were more consistent, but didn't beat Alabama which is the only thing people seem to refer to.

David Ubben
  (3:51 PM)

That's probably fair. Late losses will kill you in the Heisman race. But it's the same in the national title race, too, and you don't hear near as many complaints.

State43 (Ames)

Remember the name Grant Rohach. he will be a great QB for ISU in the coming years.

David Ubben
  (3:52 PM)

He becomes awesome on NCAA 13, if that matters. I can attest to that.

Phil M. (Bluefield, WV)

I heard tha tthe Pats requested film on Tavon hmmmmm I wonder another Wes Welker only a lot faster.

David Ubben
  (3:52 PM)

He would be incredible in that offense. In a lot of offenses, really.

RJ (OK)

Combination of my 3 (great) questions you haven't answered: Is ESPN conspiring to not let K-State QBs win the Heisman because they want the SEC to control the BCS and keep defensive lineman from signing at OU? :)

David Ubben
  (3:53 PM)

Guilty.

Miles (Austin)

Are these North/South, East/West, Senior bowls worth watching? Because they sure make them hard to find.

David Ubben
  (3:53 PM)

The practices mean a lot more in terms of draft stock than the games do. Scouts scrutinize the heck out of those things, and a lot skip town before the game is even played. I always enjoy seeing a bit of how some of the guys measure up, though.

Kelsey (Lubbock) [via mobile]

How long do you think it will be until the search for Tech's next coach is over? Also do you think Kliff would be willing to leave a solid A&M job with a Heisman QB for a job he may not be ready for yet?

David Ubben
  (3:55 PM)

I'd expect Tech to have a coach by the weekend. Kliff would leave because 1) you never know when you might get a chance, and Tech will provide him one that a lot of similar programs would not. He's a competitive guy. True or not, I'm sure he believes he could do it. We may find out if he's right.

Stan (Autsin)

How in the hell do you juggle trying to please 10 jealous/snarky fan bases?

David Ubben
  (3:55 PM)

I don't. I just write what I believe when I write opinion, and write what I report when I write facts. Let folks think what they want. I just know I don't hate or favor anybody.

Phil M. (Bluefield, WV)

If WVU went at least 10-2 would Tavon have been in New York at the Heisman ceremony ? I noticed he finished 6th in the voting.

David Ubben
  (3:56 PM)

Yep.

David Ubben
  (3:56 PM)

Especially if WVU had used that little RB wrinkle earlier in the season.

Benadore (Chicago)

Hey Ubbs, enjoy the chats, where the expectations of amazing improvements under Holgy in his second year unrealistic or was it the increase in the level of competition that lead the disappointment in all of Mountaineer Nation?

David Ubben
  (3:57 PM)

Maybe both? It's harder to win 10 in the Big 12 than in the Big East, and the defense was due for a tough season.

Jerry (Jimmy Johns)

David, put WVU's O with Iowa State's defense....national champs?

David Ubben
  (3:59 PM)

No.

David Ubben
  (3:59 PM)

No.

Drew florida [via mobile]

Do you think Mac brown is the man to lead Texas back to the holy land?

David Ubben
  (4:00 PM)

My stance on Mack is this: He's not a bad coach. It's tough to say he's done enough to be seriously worried about his job security. However, I also believe there are a LOT of coaches in the field who could do a lot more with his resources. If Texas doesn't get back to the BCS next year, I do believe it'll be time to look elsewhere. He's had enough time to reboot by then.

Tommy (Virginia)

As a WVU fan I am concerned with the direction that Holgerson is taking us. A lack of discipline on defense and not much coaching on the sideline (just headset spikes) Any chance we can bring back Casteel and Rich Rod?

David Ubben
  (4:01 PM)

Troubling, sure. And I wouldn't take your perception for a belief that no coaching is happening. That's silly. Give him time to fix the defense. It'll take time in this league, and everybody gives up yards and points.

David Ubben
  (4:02 PM)

That's it for me today. See you all again soon.
