Good morning gang. I'm Kevin Gemmell, and I'm the last cylon. What's up?
What College Football Bowl Game are you Looking Forward seeing this season?
I think the "best" game might turn out to be Oregon-Kansas State. Really fun offenses to watch, should be high scoring. Same for UCLA-Baylor. Those could be good ones.
As a Stanford fan I got to witness the travesty that is the Irish record first hand. Knowing I can't get the "Big East Video Official" asterisk next to that L, Where do you rank the Irish in terms of undefeated teams over time?
Going undefeated in this day and age is really, really hard to do. It's tough to compare. But that's why I had Notre Dame and Ohio State No. 1 and 2 in my ballot. You have to respect a team that runs the table. Comparing, though, is difficult. How do you rank TCU in '10 or Utah in '08 to Miami in '91. Undefeated is undefeated.
How does Harsin leaving UT for Arkansas State affect the Alamo Bowl, if at all?
Maybe. I was talking with Carter Strickland about that this morning (the HornsNation beat writer). Major Applewhite takes on much bigger play-calling responsibilities right now. It's a lot to cram in in a couple of weeks -- but then again I'm sure they were prepared for this possibility as well. It might have an effect...
Further down the road, how much sense does Boise State make to the Pac 12? Is it really about anything else other than money?
As I say every week, I think the Pac-12 would look to the Texas schools first. But that doesn't mean a Boise or San Diego State isn't completely out of the realm of possibility. The academics are still a very important part of it so that has to be considered. If we're talking down the road -- 5, 10 years... maybe.
What four teams do you want to add when we create the PAC16?
Teams I want to add? Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame and Kansas State. Wouldn't that be fun.
Kevin, what are your top 5 bowl matchups?
Hmmm... If we're talking just Pac-12, I put the Rose and Fiesta on the same level. I think ASU beats Navy, but I just love watching that offense so I'm looking forward to it. I think the New Mexico is interesting because of the RBs in play. The Holiday is going to have great offense and the QB situations at Oregon State and Texas make for an intriguing Alamo. I can't ever recall two teams going into an upper-tier bowl game without starting quarterbacks (not because of injury). Really, really interesting.
Sure. Can't you just see the comments blowing up on a daily basis...
What four teams do you think will be added to make the PAC16? (realistic options only)And do you like the new coaches as much as Ted?
You want me to be realistic? That's no fun. Second question first, yes, I like both hires. As for the four teams ... I think SDSU and Boise make sense from a logistics standpoint, but the academics are an issue. I don't want to speculate on teams ... but I have talked a bit with Larry Scott about it. Let's just say nothing would be that surprising. I'll leave it at that.
Ahh so you want more traffic on the blogs!
No, I just like laughing throughout the day and I'm thinking Oregon fans vs. Alabama fans on a daily basis would provide hours of entertainment.
Matt Barkley's draft status/positioning?
Probably late first round. I think he's going to be a solid NFL QB and he has pro-style experience. That's a huge selling point.
By the way, Brian in Spokane. I see the question about Dexter and would love to answer it, but there are spoilers within the question. Sorry, trying to keep this a spoiler free zone.
Is it ME, or every time ASU does something remotely well (7 wins against below average competition, 1 win against a team with a winning record, win Territorial Cup), all of the "Sleeping Giant" fairies come out and yell to the mountain tops, "Here comes ASU!". Can't they just wait until they've done something, like win a bowl game, be ranked. If ASU had lost the Territorial Cup it would have been all doom and gloom!
Wow, a bit grumpy today, Frank. Just enjoy the season for what it was. You're going to a bowl game with a new coach and completely new schemes on offense and defense. Change and discipline were promised and it was delivered. Just enjoy.
What do you know about Texas's D line and can the Beav's O line give enough time for Mannion to make "good" throws?
Not a ton ... as I said I talked with Carter a bit this morning. Pretty weak against the run (I think they rank 100th, 101st, something like that). A couple sacks per game. I think the Oregon State offensive line has quietly been a huge boost for that team because that was a huge question mark going into the season.
What have I done!?
You've taken a major challenge head on. Good for you. Looking forward to seeing what you can do. And I hope you get more than two years. Your predecessor deserved better, but that's in the past. Good luck.
Dear KevinDid USC honor Juinor Seau this season?
Yes. I think they handed out wristbands, did a honoring ceremony with his family and had his number stenciled on the field. Sad, sad story. I had a chance to cover him when I was doing Chargers. Amazing, but ultimately troubled human being. Did so much for San Diego.
Are you going to play College Bowl Mania with the Pac-12 Blog fans? http://games.espn.go.com/college-bowl-mania/en/group?groupID=22021&selGrp=22021
I haven't studied many of the other bowl games other than the Pac-12s, but sure. I'll try to jump in there and join up.
Will I be entertaining offers soon? USC? What are the odds that I stay in Corvallis?
Maybe? Depends if he wants to get out of Mike Riley's shadow.
My bad on the Dexter question I was thinking that when I sent it. Do you think Anthony Barr stays at UCLA for his senior season or enters the NFL draft?
No worries, buddy. I'll say I'm totally looking forward to the finale. I think Barr could do with another year of seasoning -- especially with defensive coaches like Jim Mora and Lou Spanos overseeing his maturation. That said, he's projected as a first-rounder and sometimes you take the gettin when the gettin's good.
Dear Test Subject, I am pretty familiar with this 'cake' you speak of, and I assure you it is not a lie.
"But there's no use crying when over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake."
Kiffin will have more success with Wittek then barkley due to his approach to run first, take care of the ball, and use the entire skills positions, what do you think?
Not ready to say that yet. Matt Barkley was one of the best quarterbacks in conference history. It's a shame his legacy is tarnished a bit by this year. But he's still a fantastic player and should be remembered as one of USC's best.
I'm insulted that you would insinuate that I would steal anybody's cake. We all know Lane Kiffin is the real culprit.
Fair enough. Apologies.
Did you actually know the Portal reference or did you google it?
Geeking out a bit. I knew it. That was one of the few games I got into.
Kevin, if Chip Kelly leaves for the NFL, and Helfrich takes over, what would be a realistic expectation for the ducks next year? Should we see a drop off? 10 wins maybe?
I think the expectation should be exactly the same -- to win a national championship. I don't think the dropoff would be dramatic at all.
Kevin, so there is finally hope at UCLA, but after taking a look at next years schedule (@USC, @Oregon, @Nebraska, @Stanford) what are your thoughts of them repeating in the pac12 south?
No doubt, the schedule gets tougher. And the expectations have been elevated significantly. They have to replace Franklin -- and I'm guessing a by-committee approach will be in order for at least the first few games, or at least until it gets sorted out. But a lot of youngsters grew up. Four of five offensive linemen are back and Hundley is another year older and wiser. I think they'll be fine, but the South is trending up.
What and how long will it take for the Buffs to gain respectability?
Depends what your definition is? I think 4-5 wins next year would be respectable. A bowl game within two years would be fantastic.
Come on Boyett information, please!
Sure, I'll give Chip a call right now and ask him about injuries. I'm sure he'll take that call. To be honest, I don't have any. Sorry.
How long before the Pirate, Mike Leach's act wears thin?
That's the thing, it's not an act. If you want to play for him, he demands a level of commitment. He's not for everyone. But the proof is there that when he gets his guys playing his system, they have success.
So have you ever heard of Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey??? Its only sold in the Denver area, but if you are there anytime soon I highly recommend it!!
I haven't. I'm a scotch guy at heart, but I'll look into it.
Zach Kline..... Bigelow.... Sonny D, 9-3 in 2013?????
That might be a bit high. I think getting back to a bowl game would be a good start. There is plenty of talent there.
In all the excitement of hiring Coach Dykes (and I think it's a good hire) I think it's a shame that the eleven year Tedford era didn't receive greater respect. Everyone pointed out what wasn't (Rose Bowl) but little was said about what was (defeating Dumpster Muffin finally and getting a new facility, eight bowl games, etc.) Is college sports that much of a business that we bury the noble dead without proper eulogies?
I'm afraid so. That's the cost of doing business in college football. I feel bad for Tedford, because he accomplished a ton of great things at that school and for the program. I'm not saying a change shouldn't have been made (though I think one more year might have been in order -- but there were a lot of academic issues that also played into the decision). Either way, yes, Cal fans should also look back favorably on what Tedford was able to accomplish.
I've been resisting watching Dexter this season so I can watch most of them at once. How's this season stacking up compared to the others?
Weird... but good. Season 2 is still my favorite -- but they are all great.
Do you see Kiffin changing anything for the Sun Bowl? Top to bottom, USC wins the game on paper, but option teams have success against USC. Or will Kiffin's arrogance get in the way, like usual? I know loaded question.
You don't change who you are in December. The option is always a little tougher to prepare for. But I think USC will be fine.
What bowl games do you get to go too?
I'll be spending a week at the Rose Bowl. Looking forward to it.
Your thoughts on Marqise Lee not being invited to NY?
Frustrating. I think when all is said and done, he's the best player in college football. But as I wrote in a column last week, it's so subjective to how people vote and evaluate the process.
PAC-12 Network is screwing up the scheduling of traditional rivalry games.
Maybe. But they are also generating a ton more money with the TV network. I agree that the Big Game in October was a joke. But it's not going to be like that every year. Sometimes things have to be moved around. Expansion was part of that.
I have caused a lot of trouble in your blog. What are you going to do about it?
Free country. Just keep it clean and don't flagrantly flag.
How many FB dives will Sutton stuff against Navy?
10-plus, at least. But that's the beauty of Navy's offense. All it takes is one to get through.
K-State fans (that I know) have been saying Oregon wont be able to stop Klein and that "great Offense". Our defense have played very strong in our Bowl BCS bowls recently. Are they right or wrong
I think both offenses are going to have success because both offenses are awesome. But Oregon's defense is going to be as healthy as its been in weeks and I think that's the difference. Oregon wins.
Hypothetically speaking, were Chip to bolt to the NFL, when do you think the announcement would come?
Hypothetically, I think late into the NFL postseason.
Do you think some of the on the fence recruits opt out of signing Oregon when Kelly leaves to go pro, or sanctions hit?
First, I don't think the sanctions will be significant. Second, I think it actually sort of helps the profile of the program when the coach goes pro.
I heard that the school made 2.5 mil off of REQUESTS for tickets for the game, which haven't been sold yet. Additionally, Ertz got worked over for best TE. Your opinion on the ND effect?
Agree on Ertz. But the Notre Dame effect, as you put it, certainly played a role.
Prediction for Arizona this weekend.
Arizona wins, 150+ and two TDS for Ka'Deem Carey.
I would also like it to be known that Justgivemeanaccount is the one who created the Pac-12 Blog Fans College Bowl Mania group.
Which PAC12 teams face the toughest bowl challenge? And how will they do?
I think Washington has the toughest road against Boise -- but I've also seen Washington play unreal football this year. If they put it all together, they will win. Depends which UW team shows up. Cliche, but true.
How do you think next year shapes up for USC? Will we surprise everyone with a 10+ win season? Or drop down to 6 win category? (I refuse to consider the possibility of less than 5 wins)
I think there is still a ton of talent and a lot more coming in. The scholarship reductions will start to take their toll, but I think a minimum of eight wins is very achievable. But I keep noting that the South has gotten a lot better.
What is your opinion on the Embree firing in Boulder?? and the subsequent hiring of the San Jose St. coach...
I thought the Embree firing was embarrassing for the school and it was a terrible way to treat a guy who worked his tail off with dice loaded against him. But as I said, that's in the past. I like what MacIntyre did at SJSU. He's a defensive-minded guy, a good recruiter in California (the life blood of the league's recruiting) and he has a history of rebuilding. He's the right guy for the job.
Can we all take a second to acknowledge the Victims of the Clackamas Town center shooting yesterday in Portland, I know a guy that got hurt and like for him to make a successful recovery.
I don't know if you've been asked this yet but who is your favourite to win the pac-12 next year. Would it change if chip left for the nfl?
I think the Oregon and Stanford are the usual suspects. We saw USC take a dip so the South is wide open. I could see UCLA repeating, I could also see Arizona or ASU making a run. Oregon State is on the rise once again in the North. Going to be really, really fun year again in the league. And my prediction numbers will suffer for it.
What does it say about the state of the Tennessee football program that they couldn't lure their former national champion quarterback to accept the same coaching job with them that he holds at another university?
Not sure what it says about the school. But I know I like living in Southern California. Maybe he does too?
Lucky for coach Mac he's going to have juniors and seniors with a lot of experience, something embree was never afforded
You are plowing through these questions! Way to show up Ted!
Not trying to show him up. He usually gives pretty deep responses. I try to hit as many as I can. Just a difference in chat philosophy. I'm more of a spread attack, he's a meticulous pro-style approach.
Where do you see Poyer, and Wheaton going in the upcoming NFL draft?
Thinking first round for Wheaton and possibly Poyer. Both are oozing NFL potential.
Do you think Coach Mora should really show some loyalty to UCLA since they were (the only school or Pro team) to reach out to him and give him a chance?
What loyalty issues are you speaking of? I think he's going to be there a while. Haven't heard anything to the contrary.
What character do you want killed off in Homeland? And when you see Saul, do you think he will say: "Hello my name Inigo Montoya you killed my father prepare to die!"is
OMG, is he the same guy? Mind=blown... not sure I want anyone to go... all pretty good characters. Though season 2 has been weaker than season 1.
Why do the SEC/Pac12 not play any bowl games? I know that if they played in Las Vegas or somewhere like that the fans would go crazy for non traditional match ups.
Good question. I would love to see some SEC-Pac-12 tie ins. Obviously, they are the top two conferences in football. No reason they couldn't find some middle ground.
What are the chances the California schools would agree to not playing each other every year, thus paving the way for an 8 game conference schedule?
Possible. I know most people want the eight-game schedule -- and I totally get why. But there is also something special about winning your conference with a nine-game schedule. I'm not sure yet where I stand on it. I know I like the California schools all playing though.
With Wheaton out, Cooks will need to step up. Who will fill the void that will be there with the duo being split up?
Thought we were going to see more of Gwachum this year ... might next year.
As a duck fan I am rooting for the Beavers against Texas, if both oregon teams have strong bowl games is it possible that both could be pre-season top 10 (not that it even matters)
I don't think Oregon State sneaks into the top 10 -- even with a good performance. Top 15 is a more realistic possibility.
Battlestar Galactica or Dr. Who (the new editions of both)?
Following off Clif's question-What NFL teams would be the best fit for Poyer or Wheaton?
Honestly, I haven't studied the NFL much the last couple of years. I'm a very casual NFL fan and don't really know what each team's needs are. McShay just posted his first mock though (I think it's on the main splash page). That would be a good start.
You've been talking to Desmond Hume all year, now it is my turn (or are we one in the same???) What song best portrays the PAC-12 blogs defensive player of the year Will Sutton and offensive player of the year, Marquise Lee. And just for fun, what about Petro Papakakis.
Wow... hmmm... Lee, "Kick Start my Heart" and Sutton, Indestructible by Disturbed (my favorite running song). Petros is a friend so I'll leave him out of it. See you in another life, brotha.
What will be Matt Barkley legacy? Pac-12 record breaker or 0-4 against Stanford?
I would hope his charitable work -- which is unbelievably extensive -- gets the first nod. Then Pac-12 record breaker, and then the Stanford numbers.
Who do you think will be the surprise team next year in the conference?
I think Oregon State has a ton coming back and might make some noise in the North.
What is the bet you have with Ted this year for the bowl challenge? Did you go with the Mortimer Duke $1 option?
Haha. We'll work something out. "Looking good Billy Ray. Feeling good Lewis."
Where do you see me going in the draft and do you think I should come back my senior year to help lead my Devils to a Pac 12 south crown?
Same situation as Barr. The gettin's good. But I hope they both come back because they are going to be a ton of fun to watch if they are back next year.
If coach Mac is successful at CU next year, say 5+ wins, how much is attributed to Mac's coaching and how much is attributed to Embree's recruiting? percentiles please.
Percentiles are tough ... especially since Embree didn't get much recruiting in ... but he did get some pretty good players. But in terms of perception, it will be 90 percent Mac.
As a Bruin I am rooting for UCLA and the Yellow Jackets
That's your right. But I think in the bowl season, you should pull for your conference. 8-0 would be awesome. But that's just me.
Better chances at the Heisman next season: DAT, Marqise Lee, or Marcus Mariota?
I think Lee makes a big push next year. But voters do love their quarterbacks so Mariota -- with similar production -- will get some buzz. And you left Ka'Deem Carey off that list. Let's not forget about him, either.
I just checked McShay's Mock draft, He has Star Louiteli Going first.( Not sure on spelling) What do you think about that?
Like it. Great DT's are tough to come by and he's a great one.
Is Chris Peterson a a realistic candidate for Oregon if CK leaves
Maybe, but I don't think he's the first choice.
Just read, that Stanford and UCLA sold out their bowl ticket allotment. Surprising after how empty Stanford stadium was for the Pac 12 championship.
Not at all. There were plenty of circumstances -- early start, Friday night, rain etc. As I put in the attendance post yesterday, Stanford's first three games this year were before the students were on campus and the big-draw games (Oregon, Cal, Notre Dame) were all on the road. Next year Stanford's attendance will be up.
Would love to see Pac 12 go 7-1 :)
Fair enough. That's what makes you a fan.
Will I be making plans this time next year for a 4th straight BCS game?
Sure. We underestimated Stanford this year ... it's time to start giving them the benefit of the doubt. They are a favorite until proven otherwise.
Hey, it's 12/12/12 12:00 pretty cool. With that, I'm out. Have a great rest of the week and enjoy the first round of bowl games. Good times as always. I'll look for the cake.
