Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:05 PM)

Greetings all, thanks so much for coming by...

The Devil's Advocate (Purgatory)

What do you say the Titans draft the best QB they can get with the 5th pick this year, let Locker and Hass move on, and start over with the new OC? It's a crummy draft for QB's is all.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:07 PM)

Even a new regime wouldn't likely give up on Locker that quickly. And in your scenario, why would you let a quality backup/alternate/mentor like Hasselbeck leave?

LAB (JVILLE)

You don't fire a coach after a season but your coach is tied to your GM who is on the hot seat. But the GM got a three year extension before the season. Does that mean everyone stays at least another season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:08 PM)

I would think it's more likely that everyone goes than everyone stays. Don't know how you sell your fans on job security for GM. Whether you can find a way to keep the coach is another story.

Brian F. (jacksonville, fl)

I can't help but feel like this entire Jaguars season has been Sisyphus pushing that rock up the hill. Scratch that. Not this past year but rather the last 13 years. Don't you have to think that it at least is refreshing to see the team not be mediocre so that we aren't being teased by the hope of success? Knowledge is power!

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:08 PM)

When did they get the rock up the hill this season?

JayKay (H-Town)

Where can Andrew Luck exploit Houston's defense? I'm guessing he'll be throwing a lot to the TEs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:09 PM)

Right now, the Texans are exploitable everywhere provided you can slow J.J. Watt.

Lucio (Houston)

I keep hearing that Andre Johnson isn't the same Andre Johnson, but he is on pace to have his 3rd best season in yards, catches, and yards per catch. What is your opinion on him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:10 PM)

He wasn't himself early on. Then he exploded. Legs are feeling good. Needs others to help soften the coverage he'll draw.

Phil (Indianapolis)

Do you think Andrew Luck could be getting late season fatigue from being unaccustomed to a long NFL regular season? Seems like he's throwing some bad, out of character passes lately.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:10 PM)

Maybe some of that. And wear and tear certainly starts to have an effect. Been getting hit too much.

Nick (Indianapolis)

Is Reggie Wayne a first ballot Hall of Famer?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:11 PM)

No. Too many other great receivers just before him and concurrently. Hard for any to emerge as singular. He will have to wait in line. Not a definite at this point, I don't think.

Rich (Jacksonville FL)

Was Jake Locker the wrong choice by the titans seeing his lack of growth over the past two seasons or is it a lack of coaching and leadership??

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:11 PM)

Too early to say. Signs right now are not great.

Nick (Indianapolis)

Looking ahead to next year and the 40 million+ coming off the books, do you see Ryan Grigson and the Colts going after a couple big name free agents? or is he more likely to just go after a bunch of lesser players?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:14 PM)

Good players, yes. Necessarily big names, no. If I could achieve one thing in this blog it would be to convince people that big names solve little. How did Mike Holmgren work out in Cleveland? Favre with the Jets? Haynesworth to the Skins? A Julius Peppers to the Bears type signing with impact is the exception, not the rule.

Doug (MD)

Do you think Vaughn and Butler have earned roster spots for next year? Not necessarily starting jobs... but they'd be solid depth.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:14 PM)

Envision them as in the pool for depth. Unsure about their contracts, however. Both young enough they should have right to keep them if they want them.

JayKay (H-Town)

Aside from the weather issues (which apparently doesn't concern the NFL), why doesn't the NFL have a Super Bowl in Green Bay? I think any NFL purist would swoon at that.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:15 PM)

No hotels and absolutely nothing to do for the week before the game for sponsors, fans and media. Can't happen.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

The rock is still being pushed. At in three weeks it will role back down. My point was that we know the rock will roll. Sitting in EverBank this year I have been pleasantly surprised at the acceptance of the bad with limited gnashing of teeth. The past years of playoff hope, only to be dashed by a Del Rio collapse in December, are gone. There is no longer any debate that this team has potential.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:16 PM)

There should be. It lacks talent. You need talent to have potential.

Tom (Indianapolis)

Do you think the Texans confidence will be rattled in this upcoming game after getting spanked by the Patriots? How competitive do you see this game with the Colts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:17 PM)

I'll be surprised if Houston doesn't play much better. Rebound after Green Bay was giant.

Matt (TN)

PK give your insight. My buddies and I were having an arguement the other day which WR we'd rather have: Reggie Wayne or Dez Bryant (before he got hurt)

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:17 PM)

Too many variables. For right now or long term? On what kind of team? With what kind of quarterback.

Nick (Denmark)

How good is Cecil Shorts III?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:18 PM)

Good and getting better. One of the few players you say that about on that roster.

DJ Drummond (Quitters, Texas)

Does Houston have any chance to beat New England if they play the AFC Championship Game at Reliant?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:18 PM)

Yes. Patriots crushed the Jets in the regular season a few years ago, then lost to them in the playoffs. It happens.

Blueman (Indy)

I have doubts that Gabbert or Henne are the answer in Jax but the rookie crop is not great and there is no real hot backup guys to go after.Do you stay status quo or take a gamble on another rookie or try and bring in a another retread QB?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:18 PM)

I'd draft.

Matt (TN)

Same super bowl question but change Green Bay to Nashville?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:19 PM)

Way better city for it, with convention center opening could probably handle it logistically. Stadium would have to be expanded. And weather is an issue.

Logan [via mobile]

Do you think the Texans defense is being adjusted to their current personnel? In regards to injuries.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:20 PM)

As best they can. But if Joseph can't cover as well and if Harris isn't as good as McCain, how do you adjust? Can only do so much.

Joe (Houston)

Coby Fleener: Better or worse than advertised? Or still too soon to tell?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:20 PM)

Too soon. Going to be good. Not as good as expected so far, I don't think. Plus he was hurt.

Joe (Austin)

How do you like the Texans chances of making noise in the playoffs after Monday nights debacle?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:21 PM)

I expect them to be in the AFC Championship Game. One game put them at 11-2. Who would trade spots with them? Everybody.

Daniel Day-Lewis (Hollywood)

If a movie was made of your life, don't you trust I would do the job better than anyone else? Even if bear a closer resemblance to Matt Hasselbeck?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:22 PM)

Haven't see Lincoln. I'll take Jack.

Lou (Indianapolis)

Does T.Y Hilton have a legitimate chance to ever be a #1

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:22 PM)

Why not?

Josephine (Indy)

Odds that Arians is a Colt next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:23 PM)

I'd say 75 or 80 percent. But it only takes one owner who doesn't care about age to make it zero.

David Kaso (Austin TTTTTTTXXXXX)

Paul,Should I start Andy Dalton or Matt Stafford

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:23 PM)

I'm not going to be responsible for your playoff fate. But I always suggest playing the guy you drafted intending to be your starter. And if you drafted Dalton ahead of Stafford, I question you.

Louis (Indianapolis)

Paul, what's your take on Tagliabue's ruling vacating the suspensions and assigning blame to the organization? Who "won"?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:24 PM)

Players won, but not by a ton. Goodell lost credibility, for sure.

cam (pok ny)

IF THE COLTS LOSE TO THE TEXANS BOTH TIMES DO THEY STILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:24 PM)

Not for sure. They'd have to win in KC or have help.

Philip (Houston)

Just so everyone knows, please explain the loss of Brian Cushing to this potent Texans defense. it seems as if after Cush was lost the team was "playing for Cush" and on a mission. In the past four weeks it seems like that motivation is either gone or this defense is just worn out. can you elaborate?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:26 PM)

The guy covers up for a lot of things that go wrong, because he's incredibly instinctive and gets in on almost every play. Tim Dobbins is a nice player, but he's not that. Playing for someone doesn't amount to game-planning or Xs and Os. Don't over rate that in this instance. It's not like Chuck Pagano.

Todd (Indy)

If the schedule was flipped and Houston was @ Indy this week, do you think that would give the Colts a better shot at the Division Title?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:26 PM)

I think it would give the Colts a better chance to win this week. I don't think they are going to sweep the Texans no matter the sequence or location of the games.

TenFan (Richmond)

2 game grade on Loggains?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:27 PM)

Not average. Yet.

Josephine (Indy)

Exempting Luck, which Colts rookie has most impressed you this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:27 PM)

Hard not to say T.Y. Hilton. I love Dwayne Allen, though.

The Strip (Vegas)

Does Vegas have any chance of getting an NFL team? the Jags maybe?? we're kind of desperate out here for one

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:27 PM)

No. NFL won't go where the betting is.

Jake (Nashville)

I don't know why everyone is so down on me all of a sudden. Sure I haven't played my best football in recent weeks, but there have been good signs and improvements. Haven't there been?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:28 PM)

Throwing a gift pick out of your end zone and running a sneak on third down are not good signs.

Vince (Indy)

Do you only answer softball questions?Roger Goodell has been repeatedly questioned on many of his punishments and rule changes. Now he wants to eliminate kickoffs, finds a dumb idea by TB's coach "interesting and wants to water down the league with more playoff teams....all this and completely blowing the Bounty Scandal...How much of a pass does this guy get by the owners? Any chance they'll realize he's a bad choice like a coach for Jacksonville?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:29 PM)

How much of a pass? He's their employee. You think he's not doing what they want?

Matt (Jax Beach)

Would Bill Polian consider the Jags GM position?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:29 PM)

I think he would. I have not spoken with him about it, however.

Rich (Jacksonville FL)

and why does Bud Adams live in Houston not Nashville? I know he lived there with the Oilers but it feels like he is living in the past and is not fully invested in the Titans

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:30 PM)

He lives where he always lived. Why should he have to move because his team moved? He can live where he wanrs. We call it AMERICA. Also it's better - he can meddle less from that far away.

Josephine (Indy)

Given our OL, do you think our offense is toooo vertical this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:31 PM)

It's working. And I love vertical. Never heard a fan say, 'I sure wish they'd throw more checkdowns and dump-offs.' Is that what you are saying? It would make you unique!

LAB (JVILLE)

How long is MOJO a Jag?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:31 PM)

Who's the GM?

Jim (Indy)

Hello Paul, Do you think that Vick Ballard is the long term answer at RB fot the colts or do they look for a different RB next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:32 PM)

I'd draft a guy and get options.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

In your opinion does Jacksonville re-sign D. Smith?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:32 PM)

My answer to all Jags' personnel questions is: Who's the GM?

Josephine (Indy)

I assume Dwight Freeney moves on next year. What level of salary could he command next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:33 PM)

He'll make good money, he just won't get a lot of years.

Rabblerouser (Kansas)

Fantasy Division Trade: You can trade one team out of the division for any other team. Who do you trade? Who do you receive?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:35 PM)

It'd be about readership and fan bases. So the team getting shipped out would be the Jags. Coming in would be a NFC East team, Jets, Chicago or Green Bay. NY/ Philly/ Dallas stuff is too over the top. Redskins Stadium isn't enough of a city venue for me. Want to say Green Bay. But it's a pain to get there. So I'll take Chicago, how about?

Shaun (TN)

Would you rate this as possible one of the worst seasons in Titan history? It has truly been hard to watch as a fan.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:36 PM)

They've been this bad before. People always see what's current as best or worse.

Philip (Houston)

Andre Johnson or AJ Green? Eliminate age as a factor.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:36 PM)

Johnson, I think. Very hard to eliminate age though.

Rob (Houston) [via mobile]

Why is Wade Phillips not taking more heat for the atrocious defense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:38 PM)

His defense has been terrible lately. What kind of heat would you like applied? BenGay in his jock?

Shaun (TN)

As a Titan fan is it ok for me to root for them to lose the final three and be in the market for a possible top 3 pick? What is the point in watching this mediocre team win 1-2 meaningless games?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:39 PM)

Root how you like. But don't expect them to play for a draft pick. Also, have they drafted better third (VY), sixth (Pac) or later?

Jason (Nashville, TN)

If Titans move on from Gray. who do you see as a good fit at DC for the Titans?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:40 PM)

It's really difficult to give you names when we have no idea who will be available. Right now, one guy who's available is Monte Kiffin.

Mike K (Jaxson de ville, fl)

Ebon Britton. Big bust or the biggest bust all time?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:40 PM)

Disappointing for sure.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Paul, I also love vertical offenses. The way my Vikings are playing (especially at QB and WR), I long for the days of a vertical offense like the Colts!

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:41 PM)

See, people!

Chase (Peoria, Il)

Unfortunately Paul, I have read a couple people this commenting exactly that about the colts.."why don't we check down more..etc, etc. Some people just can never be happy.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:41 PM)

Ridiculous.

Joe (Austin)

What do you think happened on Monday night for the game to get so out of hand? What would you do differently if the Texans were to play New England in the playoffs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:41 PM)

It's not a secret. They gave NE two third-down conversions by penalty on the first two TD drives and threw and early pick. Make those mistakes against that team, you don't survive.

DJ Drummond (Houston)

If the Texans win out, does Indy still make the playoffs at 10-6?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:42 PM)

Yes.

J-Jo [via mobile]

I definitely did not look 100% against the patriots did I?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:42 PM)

I don't know if you were 100 percent or not. I know you didn't play well.

Kei (Orlando)

What did you think about Timmy Terrific bravely pulling on a jersey and hobbling onto the field for the coin toss, in his hometown no less?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:43 PM)

My God, it inspired me. I thought, if he can do that, I can write well and be insightful. Not just today. But every day! (Did his ribs make him limp?)

TY HILTON (INDY)

Hey Paul, Who do you think has had a more impressive rookie season so far- Me or Cecil Shorts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:43 PM)

Cecil Shorts was a rookie last year and didn't do much except show off stage fright.

Ahmood (Abu Dhabi)

If the Indianapolis Colts win this game at Houston, that would put lots of pressure on Houston with games against the Vikings and then at Indianapolis. How good do you think this team would be handling that kind of pressure?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:44 PM)

I don't think they fold under pressure. I think they have trouble defending MVP quarterbacks. As do a lot of teams.

Will (Chattanooga)

Trade Proposal: Kenny Britt, CJ, Jared Cook, Hasslebeck for Larry Fitzgerald. Arizona gets multiple playmakers. Titans get a sure handed receiver and mentor for Kendall Wright. No?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:44 PM)

Never happen. It's a baseball or fantasy trade.

chris (TN)

if you are the titans in the draft, and warmack (mccshay said best guard in awhile) and a DE are there as you pick who do you take?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:45 PM)

DE.

Oot (Maryland)

Saw an article on how Shad Khan's son is in charge of analytics and using it to determine risk in certain game situations. I like Mularkey despite the undeserved rap he gets, but this sounds like something perfect for Chip Kelly...your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:46 PM)

I'd love to see Chip there. I think he'll do better.

Doug (MD)

Any chance Texans used an alternate (and unsuccessful) game plan expecting to see Pats again in playoffs and the biggest threat?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:47 PM)

Absolutely not. That's not in the realm of anyone's thinking. You can't give a team less than your best assuming you'll see it in the playoffs when there is no guarantee you'll see it in the playoffs, and when you haven't even won your division yet.

Blueman (Indy)

People say the Colts record is more about their schedule than their talent, but what team in the AFC really has a schedule that is that tough? The AFC is full of average to poor teams.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:49 PM)

I'm anti soft-schedule talk, generally. Can only play who's on your schedule. And they beat Green Bay.

Josephine (Indy)

You make it sound like our offense must be totally vertical or totally dump off. I'm just wondering if there's something in the middle that doesn't get Andrew almost killed every week.....

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:49 PM)

I'd vote for better protection. Sure, throw more mid-range stuff to avoid not getting killed, I'm fine with that. But Luck is great at holding it and finding big plays. Hard to say stop.

Kevin (RVA)

When does a coin flip decide draft order? Are there other tie breakers before the coin flip?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:50 PM)

Strength of schedule is tie-breaker -- worse strength of schedule gets better pick. Tie goes to coin flip.

Joey (Houston)

If you could blog for another division would you? The AFC South arrow seems to me to be pointing up?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:51 PM)

I have no desire to move or to restart on four teams from scratch.

Joe (Houston)

Comparing Kubiak to the other coaches of AFC playoff teams (Bellichick, Harbaugh, Fox, Tomlin), do you see coaching as a relative weakness for Houston?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:52 PM)

I don't think Harbaugh and Fox are some sort of big-time playoff coaches.

Jared (Pensacola, FL) [via mobile]

Do you see any of the Colts upcoming free agents as must keep? I think McAfee must be kept, and a few others as worthwhile for depth.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:52 PM)

I love McAfee. But no punter or kicker is "must-keep." They are eminently replaceable.

Tim (Iowa)

Why do you think the Teans basically waved the white flag against the Pat Monday night, that's the thing that bothered me the most and I'm not a Texans fan.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:53 PM)

I wrote I didn't like it at all, I don't think it sends your team a good message.

Derek (Evansville, IN)

Is Houston better than Denver?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:53 PM)

I think so.

Young (Indy)

December 30th, Texans vs Colts in Indy, Coach P back on sidelines.... Will you be there?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:53 PM)

Sure will. Hope he is back.

Will (Indianapolis)

This is assuming the Colts draft big up front and they make a splash in free agency at skill positions. What two skill positions (one offense, one defense) and possible player for each do you like here that would mesh well with the new Colts philosophy?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:56 PM)

I wonder if Connor Barwin wouldn't be a good upside OLB for them. I'd love a safety to replace Zbikowski.

Jake (Chattanooga)

PK, I've long believed that division games shouldn't count against schedule difficulty since they are so unpredictable. Although this may just be because I'm a Titans fan and they always underperform in the division. Any thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:56 PM)

That's quite a generalization to base such a radical change on. I'm against your suggestion. Unpredictable is good, not bad.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

Who do you like - 'Bama or The Irish?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:57 PM)

Like? Neither. Like to win? Bama, giant.

J.Freeman (Indy)

Am I the Candadian import of the year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:59 PM)

NFL-wise, sure. I do love Labatts, though.

Santa Claus (North Pole)

Paul has to go folks. Just a reminder that you have less than two weeks to get on my nice list.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:59 PM)

Thanks, big guy! See you all.
