Chat with Rich Cimini

Rich Cimini
  (2:01 PM)

Greetings, all. Thanks for stopping by on an usual day for us. The weekly sked is different because of the Monday night game, but anyway ... here we are.

Steve (CA)

What will be the status or greene and powell next year? Neither are great but something has to give here right?

Rich Cimini
  (2:03 PM)

Greene will be an unrestricted free agent. I can't see a team giving him big money, and that includes the Jets. Powell will be back.

Mike (Long Island)

Do you see the Jet's keeping Braylon past this year, or is this strictly a quick band-aid to the teams offensive woes?

Rich Cimini
  (2:04 PM)

I think there's a chance they could sign him for next year, just a minimum salary deal, but let's be realistic: He's had 2 non-descript seasons. YOu can't expect him to be the Braylon of 2010.

Derek Hamilton (The Great White North)

This team is riddled with a lack of Talent on the Offensive side of the ball. Rich if you had the power to steal anyone Offensive player in the league (excluding a QB) who would you choose for the Jets to help them today?

Rich Cimini
  (2:06 PM)

Wow, interesting question, Derek. I'd probably take Aaron Rodgers because he's the youngest of all the elite QBs -- although I'd gladly settle for Luck or RG3. For non-QB, give me AP and I'd be happy.

Christopher (NYC)

Hey Rich, what impact do you believe Braylon will have on MNF in Tennessee? I know they have to see how his health is, and how fast he can learn the offense...but in your opinion, do you think he'll contribute more than people think? Thanks.

Rich Cimini
  (2:07 PM)

I'm sure he'll play -- if he's healthy, and that's a big if. But to think he's going to come in and have a big day ... it's just not going to happen. First of all, no WR on the Jets has a big day. I'd be surprised if he catches more than 1 pass.

Kevin (NYC)

Rich - great work this season. You've mentioned the Jets looming salary cap issues. Do you see them trading either Revis or Cromartie? That's a ton of money to tie up into the Cornerback position. Cromartie has played well why not sell high?

Rich Cimini
  (2:09 PM)

No way they trade Cromartie, not with Revis coming off a major injury. They want to keep both, but if Revis' demands get out of control (and they might), I think it would be in their best interest to consider dealing him. Of course, you'd never get equal value because he's coming off the knee.

Bob (Newark, NJ)

Great job as always covering the Jets, Rich. Do you think that Braylon has anything left to give the Jets? He has less than 35 catches in the past season and a half. Is there anyone else out there that would be better?

Rich Cimini
  (2:09 PM)

They could've re-signed Patrick Turner or Jason Hill. At least those guys know the system. Braylon is just a body.

Greg (Phoenix, AZ)

Rich, thanks for posting the stats on Mark's QB rating behind center. Why don't the coaches just use Tebow in the wildcat? They tried to incorporate him in the offense early in the season, now they won't use him at all. He could still be useful in a Brad Smith-type role. Is Rex afraid to use him because of the threat he poses to Mark?

Rich Cimini
  (2:12 PM)

That is the question of the year, Greg. I think the Jets grossly miscalculated the impact of Tebow. He's not a Brad Smith-type athlete, the kind of guy that can make people miss. Tebow's style is most effective on an every-down basis, allowing him to wear down a defense. You can't do that when you're running only 4 or 5 times a game.

Matt (Madison)

First of all, I loved the Al Woodall piece you did recently. Speaking of back-up QB's...Surprisingly, I haven't heard too much noise about Rex's decision to deactivate McElroy last week. IMO - He showed incredibly poor judgement by leaving the Jets withouth viable option of the bench. Particularly since Sanchez was on a short leash. Thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (2:13 PM)

Thanks, Matt, I had a nice conversation with Al. Actually, there was a lot of noise about his McElroy decision. I agree with you, it was a poor decision. But it turns out that Sanchez's leash wasn't as short as we all thought it would be, because there was no way he putting gonna put Tebow in the game.

John (New Haven CT)

Great work Rich! Do you feel the Jets have enough speed at the edge to stop CJ1K? With Thomas and Scott battling injuries, is it time for rookie Davis to step up? Thanks!

Rich Cimini
  (2:15 PM)

Thanks, John. You're right about speed on the perimeter. McIntyre, who has been playing a lot lately, is no burner, either. Davis could be a key, so will Landry in the box.

Matt (River Plaza, NJ)

Hey I saw you kind of hating on Braylon and i'm not saying he is what he was when he left, but he don't think it's an upgrade over Mardy Gilyard? He played hard for us thats why we get pumped he but his heart out on the field.

Rich Cimini
  (2:19 PM)

I have nothing against Braylon. He played hard and he never wanted to leave NY. It's just that he hasn't played much, he doesn't know the system and there's only 3 wks left.

Anthony (Canadian In Michigan)

Hey Rich, good job as always with your coverage of the team. What do you think the chances are Braylon is even active for the Titans game this Monday? I wouldn't be surprised at all if he wasn't ready for the game... as much as I hope he will be. The guys has been hurt and is it realistic he can leapfrog guys like Gilyard for an active spot?

Rich Cimini
  (2:20 PM)

Thanks, Anthony. Fair question. They need to dress more than 3 WRs, and there's no way Hill is playing. I doubt Gates plays; he still was wearing sunglasses Monday in the locker room. So it comes down to Braylon or Jordan White for the 4th spot. I'd rather have Braylon.

Michael (Too Close to Foxboro)

Can someone explain where the failure was in the effective use of Tebow? Was he not scouted well? Have his skills declined? Do the Jets not have the personnel to tailor the offense to his strengths, like they did in Denver? It does not seem like they gave it a chance, so I can only guess they are hanging more of their evaluation on practice results. As a long time Jets fan, I am tired of the Jets being a joke...especially living in Patriots Country. I am convinced the Jets sold their soul to the Devil to win Super Bowl III and this is now the curse to bear for all eternity. Even the Bucks won a Super Bowl in my lifetime!

Rich Cimini
  (2:22 PM)

Nothing worse, I imagine, than being a Jets fan in Patriots country. The Jets misjudged everything about the Tebow situation -- his skills, the Wildcat scheme, his impact on Sanchez, you name it. Everything. One of the worst personnel moves. Ever.

IRA (Staten Island)

Rich, You now i have always been a big supporter of Edwards and felt they needed to keep him. What he has left who knows but its better then what they have now even with Hill. This should'v ebeen done 7 months ago. I believe whatever he can help them with its good for mark and he might settle down a bit with Edwards on the field. This was a no brainer i don't care about the comments he made and took back quickly. Your thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (2:24 PM)

Ira's a little late to the party today, but thanks for stopping by. Someone in the organization told me a few months ago that Braylon had nothing left. Why is he here? Desperation. Plus, I think they covet the publicity.

Gary (York, Pa)

Good Afternoon, I was always a big supporter of Sanchez, however, I support the coaching staff's handling of him. He has been a turnover machine since day one with no improvement in sight. It's my belief his future with the Jets, despite his 2013 salary, is at best a back-up QB. I can see Matt Moore as the starting QB in 2013. Your thoughts

Rich Cimini
  (2:25 PM)

Do you really want Moore and Sanchez as your QBs next season? I wouldn't.

Bob (London)

Rich, I buy that Edwards can revive his production in New York, and will thrive with all the chemistry and everything. But what evidence do we have that he's even healthy enough to play? He was only released by Seattle becuase they though he wasn't, after all.

Rich Cimini
  (2:26 PM)

Great question, Bob. He was waived/injured a week ago, so there's a health question. Don't get your hopes up.

Oz (CT)

Hi Rich, Since the Jets will most likely have Sanchez as the starter next season, do you think it will benefit him to keep Sparano or hurt him ?

Rich Cimini
  (2:28 PM)

The Jets need a new voice in Sanchez's ear -- whether it's a new QBs coach or a new OC. He needs a QB guru.

Bob (NYC)

Do you think that the Jets are in for another national TV embarrassment ? And why do you think they do so poorly in prime time games (I remember BAL and Patriots on MNF, Thanksgiving etc ?

Rich Cimini
  (2:28 PM)

Stage fright?

Josh (Colorado Springs, CO)

Rich - For the past 3 years I have been buying Jets jerseys as Christmas presents for my young son and myself (yes I buy myself a Christmas present). I choose the players jerseys based off a couple of things: 1 - will they be on the team for at least 2 - 3 years. 2 -Player likeablitly. 3 - Will they be major contributors moving forward. With that said, my son has Revis, Holmes and Tomlinson (LT didn't work out so good). I own Revis, Mangold and a Pennignton (one of my favorite Jets). My son wants a Landry (style of play) or Wilkerson and I am leaning towards Wilkerson or Cromartie. Please let me know your thoughts or if you have another suggestion for us. Thanks for the coverage and keep up the good work! Merry Christmas

Rich Cimini
  (2:29 PM)

Wow, this is a lot of pressure, Josh. I think you're safe with Wilkerson, Cro, Revis and Mangold. I'd hold off on Landry. When in doubt, go with Namath.

Matt (Westchester)

What are the chances the jets make a move for Jake Long this offseason? Who would move to RT Long or D'brick?

Rich Cimini
  (2:30 PM)

It's an interesting question, but I don't see that at all. The front office really likes Austin Howard at RT and Brick isn't going anywhere because of his conctract.

Brian C (Franklin Lakes, NJ)

What ever happened to Hayden Smith? Any update on his progress?

Rich Cimini
  (2:31 PM)

Sure. He played 10 snaps on Sunday in Jax, a career high. With Keller down, they needed a 3rd TE.

Matt Ferry (Fair Lawn, NJ)

Hey Rich! Slim chance but still alive, what are the chances you think the Jets will make the playoffs? If so you think they could make a run at it? Thanks!

Rich Cimini
  (2:32 PM)

A run at what, the end zone? This is a team that struggles to score TDs. They won't go anywhere in the playoffs. I'd give them about a 10% chance of making the playoffs.

Anthony (Madison)

Rich, I love your work. I read everything you write. I know everybody gets down on Tannenbaum for the lack of depth and Teboow blunder, but shouldn't we also praise him for some of the positive moves he has made. Austin Howard has been a diamond in the rough, solidifying the right side of the line...Bilal Powell has played really well as of late...Wilkeson has been wreaking havoc on opposing O-linemen...Robert Malone has punted really well for us...Yeremiah Bell and Laron Landry have been major upgrades at the Safety position. What do you think?

Rich Cimini
  (2:34 PM)

Thanks, Anthony. You're right, there have been some good moves. They definitely upgraded at RT. Wayne Hunter is a distant memory. For all the good moves, Tanny also has bad some bad ones. Clearly, he left the offensive skill positions short on talent.

Mike (Bronx)

Joe Namath on ESPN radio keeps blames Woody for the publicity seeking and organizational issues. how much blame do you assign to Woody for this mess ? His record as owner has been better than the average team owner, no ?

Rich Cimini
  (2:37 PM)

I think he's a middle-of-the-pack owner. They've had only 3 losing seasons under him -- 03, 05 and 07. And they had QB injuries in 03 and 05. I think he lacks conviction on an organizational philosophy, swaying too much to public sentiment.

Maury (South Florida)

Im applying to be the new GM. You interested in being a scout?

Rich Cimini
  (2:37 PM)

I was an Eagle Scout. Does that count?

Casey (Bellmore, NY)

Who is more likely to be back next year Landry or Bell and the same goes for Moore and Slauson?

Rich Cimini
  (2:38 PM)

Tough one. All 4 could be gone. I like all 4 as players, but Bell and Moore are older, Landry will be expensive and Slauson probably will be replaced by ... Ducasse. Ugh

Robb (Syracuse)

How much say does Rex have in personal decisions in comparison to Tannenbaum?

Rich Cimini
  (2:39 PM)

Tannenbaum has the final say, but he solicits input from a lot of people, especially Rex.

Chris (Rutgers Grease Trucks, NJ)

Hi Rich:On Friday's chat, you were asked if the Jets might sign Braylon. You replied "No chance on Braylon". No chance does not mean "No chance barring an injury to a WR (Hill)". I asked you about The Jets going after Polian as GM. You said that he was headed to KC. Based on your latest prognositcation, it looks like Bill Polian will become the GM of The Jets!! YAY!!!!!

Rich Cimini
  (2:42 PM)

Hey, who'da thunk it? I was surprised by the Braylon move. If you had the information I had, you'd have been surprised too. I guess I'm an "idiot."

Max Kaplan (Wesleyan University)

Rich,It is obvious that the defense is dominant and their insurmountable holes on the offensive side of the ball.would the jets consider freeing up cap space and obtaining draft picks by trading a big contract like David Harris, or possibly even Revis?I understand they are dominant, but this would not only allow us to be active in free agency, it would give us draft picks to address depth on the offense.Thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (2:43 PM)

Can't trade Harris; the cap hit is prohibitive. Like I said earlier, they might have to consider dealing Revis if the negotiations fall apart. But why would they trade 2 of their better players? They have so few of them, so it makes no sense to deal them. They don't have to wreck the defense to fix the offense.

Brian (Ridgewood)

Rich, good work. Is 9-7 the worst thing that could happen to this team? Are the powers that be smart enough to realize this team does need change in the offseason and its not just a result of no Revis and no Holmes?

Rich Cimini
  (2:46 PM)

First, they have to get to 9-7 -- and that's no gimme. A smart football person (or persons) would realize the team has obvious shortcomings, regardless of record. Always be careful what you see in December. Whether the results are positive or negative, they can be deceiving.

westcoastJetsfan (Los Angeles)

Hey Rich, any truth to the rumors that the Jets are considering signing Braylon for next year too. Since we're stuck with Sanchez I think it's a smart decision because he's got a comfort level with him

Rich Cimini
  (2:48 PM)

I wouldn't be shocked if they add a year to the deal, but it wouldn't be guaranteed, so it really wouldn't mean anything. I don't think Braylon's presence will be the missing piece for Sanchez. Bring in Calvin Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald, and now you're talking.

Tom P (Holmdel, NJ)

Rich, in your honest opinion, if the Jets just so happen to make it to 9-7, do you think they make the playoffs?

Rich Cimini
  (2:49 PM)

Pitt has to lose 2 out of 3 and Cincy has to lose 1 out of 3. It's slim.

Jon (Halifax)

Since Bart Scott has been playing better this year, does that mean he is a lock to return after this season? Or are we heading for another awkward off-season with him that i "can't wait" for

Rich Cimini
  (2:50 PM)

Nothing awkward. He'll be gone.

Paul-Michael (Staten Island)

Rich, after covering the Jets for so long, does the "circus" atmosphere and nonstop guarantees and brash personalities make it easier or more fun to write about, or do you prefer simply talking football without any of the distractions?

Rich Cimini
  (2:51 PM)

Ideally, you'd like both. We love the craziness because it sells papers and generates web traffic. But I'm also a football fan, so I like writing about the actual games.

Laura (NJ)

Will Tim Tebow get more snaps and be in this weeks game?

Rich Cimini
  (2:52 PM)

Even 1 snap is more than he's been getting, so I'll say yes.

Todd (Livingston, NY)

Hey Rich:Is Sanchez on this team next year?

Rich Cimini
  (2:53 PM)

Yep.

IRA (Staten Island)

Rich, You know how i feel about trading Revis. Think they can get a QB and a pick or two for Revis coming off an injury?

Rich Cimini
  (2:53 PM)

No. Who'd give up that much for a player coming off a major knee injury, demanding $18 M per year?

Jeremy (Little Falls)

What do you think the Jets do about Bell and Landry next season? In my opinion they have played great and shout be retained.

Rich Cimini
  (2:54 PM)

I like 'em both, too, but the Jets traditionally don't pay a lot for safeties.

JD (San Diego)

Do you consider yourself a Jets fan or do you need to remain objective in your coverage?

Rich Cimini
  (2:55 PM)

It's all about the objectivity.

Scott (New York)

Rich, despite having a down year this year the Jets special teams has been one of the most explosive in the NFL over the course of Westhoff's tenure here. With him retiring after the season, is there anyone within the organization he's been mentoring to take over the role for next season?

Rich Cimini
  (2:56 PM)

Ben Kotwica is considered the heir apparent.

Pranit Sethi (NY, NY)

Rich, what will be the status of Calvin pace, Bryan Thomas and Bart Scott? Seems like they are all mostly aged and unproductive. Is it realistic to replace 3 starters either via draft or free agency? thanks

Rich Cimini
  (2:57 PM)

They have Davis to replace Scott. Still need two OLBs.

Dan (New Jersey)

Rich, in your honest opinion, what do you think should happen with Tebow after this season? Keep him as backup QB and give this wildcat thing a second chance next year or cut him and limit their losses now? What do you think will happen?

Rich Cimini
  (2:57 PM)

He's gone. No doubt in my mind.

Mike (New york)

with a returning Revis next year and with Kyle Wilsons contract over, do you think he will be gone?

Rich Cimini
  (2:58 PM)

Wilson is signed for '13.

Jim (GC)

Are the Jets going to have the same offensive game plan as they did against the Jags? Lots of Greene and Powell?

Rich Cimini
  (2:58 PM)

You got it.

Evan (Fairleigh Dickinson University)

Does Braylon start this week? And if he does, does he have any impact at all?

Rich Cimini
  (2:59 PM)

No and no.

Bob (NYC)

Hi Rich, Great work. With regards to improving the roster next year, where is most of the cap money tied up? I hear that given current contracts it will be difficult to add talent next year. Is that the case ?

Rich Cimini
  (2:59 PM)

They can clear enough room.

Oz (CT)

Hi Rich, Lets say the Jets go 8-8 or even 9-7. Do the Jets see that as success and get a pass from within ? Or does Woody, Rex and Mike T realize how flawed this roster was this season and make changes ?

Rich Cimini
  (3:00 PM)

The Jets' spin doctors might try to call it a success, but it wouldn't be.

Anonymous Player (Jet Nation)

Has Woody and Tebow's PR team paid reporters like you, Walker and Mehta to write articles about the back up QB all year long?

Rich Cimini
  (3:01 PM)

I don't think Tebow was looking for this kind of PR.

42 years is enough (Great Neck, NY)

Assume the Jets have the 10th pick in the 2013 draft: what position do they go for? Given this team's obvious lack of depth, do they actually retain all of their picks?

Rich Cimini
  (3:01 PM)

I'm taking the Rex approach: My focus is on Titans.

Rich Cimini
  (3:03 PM)

Sorry, but I'm out of time. I'm glad we had such a big turnout for a non-traditional chat day. Keep checking the blog because we'll have updates all the way up until kickoff on Monday night. Thanks for the great questions and have a great week. Rich
