We know that Chip Kelly is not leaving nor Nick Saban or any other top coaches. From reading all your chats it seems like Mack has anywhere from 1-3 years left. Texas has raised more profit than any other school and has the best state for recruiting. Do you think Kirby Smart or any other high profile coach would accept the DC position for a coach-in-waiting title?
One, I wouldn't put it in print that Kelly or Saban won't be leaving their jobs ever. I would not be shocked at all if either or both were not at their current jobs in 2013. Two, Mack will NEVER do a coach in waiting situation again. I hardly ever say never, but I'll say it with this.
Hey Sean! Bryan Harsin just left for Arkansas State and Manny Diaz seems to be on his way to Florida, FIU or FSU DC. How do you see the coaching flee? Has Mack told them that he would retire after the OSU game and they should find themselves some good jobs while there is a lot jobs open or what? Who do you see as possible replacements for RB and DC now that Applewhite has overtaken the job as QB coach?
It is my opinion that both were encouraged to look for other employment. There are a number of ways that Texas can fill that role. There are a number of good candidates that I would give a serious look. I'm pulling for current Desoto HS coach Claude Mathis, but I would not rule out other guys in the coaching community that are currently on other staffs.
What are you initial thoughts on Kliff Kingsbury to Texas Tech and how long before he wins?
I think it is a great story, and I think he will be one heck of a college coach one day. I just hope for Texas Tech's sake, his day comes sooner than later. I think Texas Tech fans should be excited, but they need to slow down on expectations. They went 7-5 this year, lose a good amount of experienced players and Tuberville left for a reason. Be patient with Kingsbury and it will pay off. He needs to go out and hire a good, experienced staff and a staff with a former head coach or two (Chizik) as coordinators that will be able to counsel KK through some blind spots.
Who is head coach in 2014?
Come on man! If I knew that I wouldn't be chatting for ESPN, I'd live in NY and be make millions in stock and real estate speculation. If you are making me guess, my only guess would be that it would not be Mack Brown.
What changes do you see in the Texas offense for the Alamo Bowl with Major Applewhite calling the plays?
I think you will see Texas try to stretch the ball down the field more and get it in the air to their speed guys. Mack Brown even said on the Longhorn Network that they will probably throw the ball more.
Sean, which Texas players are expected to leave for the draft early (other than Kenny Vacarro)?
Vacarro is not leaving early for the draft because he is a senior. So is Alex Okafor. I don't see any of the eligible juniors leaving for the NFL and if by chance one did, it would be a huge mistake.
To what extent do you think that Mack and Dodds are aware of the anger out there among Texas fans about the last 3 years? Are they mostly sealed off from the criticism, or do you think they're more aware than they sometimes appear?
They are well aware, and to Dodds' credit, he answers emails.
I saw you retweet a few things on Rob Parker's comments on First Take yesterday. What is your opinion about what he said about RGIII?
It was terrible. Most people that have a brain understand that there is not a manual that comes with blackness, whiteness or any other "ness." But seriously, black people (just like everyone else) come in all different shapes, sizes, religions, political ideologies, dating preferences, etc. Comments like those coming from a black man make even less sense than if they were to come from someone white.
Have you seen Oregon State play at all this year? What matchups does Texas have the advantage in? The disadvantage? Thank you.
Yes I have a few times. Texas will be able to get pressure on the OSU quarterback. Oregon State has two really good receivers, and Texas will have its hands full trying to keep tabs on them, so they will need that pressure.
Who are the potential candidates to replace Manny Diaz as DC if he leaves?
I would look for guys who have a past with Mack Brown who are not working but are looking for a way back into the game. Texas would be a heck of a landing spot for Gene Chizik if Auburn will still pay the difference between his salary at Texas and what they owe him.
Do you think that Mack will grant Applewhite total autonomy as far as calling plays or will he continue to meddle and insist on a more conservative, "play to not lose" approach to offense? Defensiviely, if Diaz stays, do you see a more basic defensive plan with fewer stunts and blitzes that wind up with players in no-win situations?
I think Applewhite will have as much autonomy as anyone else in the country in this bowl game. Head coaches all have a say in game plan and structure because they are the head coach for a reason. Nobody has autonomy under Saban either. He has stuff to say.
With all the Quarterbacks on the roster is it possible that next year there will be wider competition for the starting position? Was Connor Brewer red-shirted this season and is there any fear of him leaving with Harsin?
I don't know if there is a fear that Brewer will leave, but I do believe that the competition will be open. With that said, I still think David Ash is the leader in the clubhouse.
Good to see you doing well. I went to college with you. Doesn't Mack Brown need a heavy recruiter in his hire as the RB coach?
Thanks for the kind words. He always needs to add recruiters but he needs to add attitude and a teacher. This team is in need of an infusion of energy, attitude and accountability.
I hate that the Big 12 sitting idle again while other conferences are making moves. Why doesn't the Big 12 at least try to engage in conversation with teams like Clemson, Florida St, and Virginia Tech to see what the interest level is? Or could it be that they are waiting to see how much Maryland is going to have to pay to get out of the ACC?
I think most believe that the Big 12 will move when there is more movement on a real level with the Big Ten or the SEC. Georgia Tech seems to be the catalyst to get that kicked off. There are plenty of private conversations going on though.
With us having the youngest team to play this year the record we have is not too bad. With each year with an improving record and having every starter on offense returning. And 9 of 11 starters on defense returning. The play @QB will be better. A lot of talent leaving the Big 12. What are our chances making BCS Championship game?
It's hard for me to even have that conversation about the BCS Championship game because winning is about so much more than experience and talent. They need a paradigm shift in a huge way. They don't play with passion. Talented teams don't win anything if they don't play and coach with passion.
Why don't I hear Major's name mentioned as a candidate for HC jobs elsewhere...or being interviewed? Does he have HC aspirations? Does he think he's Mack's successor?
I think most people want to see him call plays again before he is moved into that conversation. Yes, he wants to be a head coach. I still don't see him as Mack's successor. Call me crazy.
What do you make of Mack griping that the Longhorn Network is giving opponents looks at his schemes?
I don't know if he was saying that, because it does not show his schemes. It would show who was practicing and who is not, but never his schemes.
What postion do you want to see with the most improvement coming out of the bowl practices?
Quarterback on offense and linebacker on defense.
Do you think anyone will transfer this spring due to a lack of playing time? Maybe some of the WR or OL that were seldomly used.
I try to ever speculate on that stuff, but some positions are pretty deep and there are older players that are behind younger players. That is usually a sign.
Thanks for all of the great questions, please pray for our friends in Connecticut.
