Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (12:00 PM)

So Tom Watson is the Ryder Cup Captain for 2014 in Scotalnd. Is he the right choice? It's the fastest hour in golf.BRING IT!

Chris (Chicago)

Love the pick for Watson as captain...any chance he would ask Nelson to be an assistant captain or is that even worse?

Michael Collins
  (12:01 PM)

I doubt Larry Nelson would accept an assistant job. He's gotta be feeling a bit hurt and slighted. Too nice a guy not to be given the chance to be captain in 2016.

Keith H (Seattle)

How did Q-School with Omar Uresti go?

Michael Collins
  (12:02 PM)

Omar didn't make it thru second stage so there was no final stage of Q-school for me.

Michael Collins
  (12:04 PM)

PGA President Tom Bishop said he called Tom Watson 13 months ago about being the Captain, that means before DL III lost the job was Watson's. That seem like a strange move to me.

Fred. El Paso [via mobile]

Happy Holidays to the entire Collins Family. Who is your favorite golf announcer?

Michael Collins
  (12:05 PM)

Happy Holidays to you and yours as well Fred. I don't have a favorite. SO many different styles I can appreciate.

Alex (OH)

Hey MC, who would you have picked as the 2014 captain?

Michael Collins
  (12:06 PM)

I had a conversation at the British Open Championship earlier this year and said that Watson would be the best pick but we never thought it would happen.

Rick (Chicago)

Question re: 2 year exemption for winning a tourney. Say if you win in February 2011 and then don't do so well. Does your exemption last to Feb. 2013 or all through 2013.

Michael Collins
  (12:06 PM)

Through 2013. That's why it great to win early in the year.

Jeff (Hoboken)

Will Tom have a firmer hand with these guys? I like DL3, but I'm not a fan of "the players told me when they wanted to play"

Michael Collins
  (12:07 PM)

I think Tom will be between DL III and Hal Sutton. And that's what's needed.

Chris (Chicago)

Do you believe Tiger and Watson are okay? Tiger does not forgive easily.

Michael Collins
  (12:10 PM)

I do believe they are ok. It's hard to hold grudges towards people for real long periods of time and very unhealthy. So I think Watson's comments about it being water under the bridge and then saying I want Tiger on my team tells me they're good in Tom's mind. Tiger I believe is good with that too.

Ed (Long Island)

Do you think Watson is a PR move? With his pick it's a high profile name whereas Toms or Nelson don't add a lot of buzz. This is an exhibition at end of the day so more chatter the better.

Michael Collins
  (12:11 PM)

Yes and no. Yes a PR move for visibility, but not only for PR. Tom is a really good captain and he will give the US squad the best chance to win when he sets the pairings.

Caddy Mike Corrao (Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida)

Michael, Enjojed seeing you at Birdies for the Brave...What an event!...I like Watson for the Americans, especially because of the venue...The Euros are probably happy that they won't have to beat Watson the player in Scotland...It still will be up to the players, and I expect the Euros to be loaded again...Cheers

Michael Collins
  (12:12 PM)

Yeah, Watson won't hit a shot, but he'll set the pairs and that is almost as important

Andrew (WI)

Does the PGA go back to the old model of 40-something major winners after Watson? You can still go Toms/Leonard/Furyk/Mickelson in some order, fitting everyone in...

Michael Collins
  (12:13 PM)

I'd look for Nelson to get his shot in 2016 as long as he doesn't say anything too inflammatory between now and then.

Ed (Long Island)

Is Mickelson an automatic captain's pick if he doesn't make it on points?

Michael Collins
  (12:14 PM)

If Keegan is on the team and Phil is playing well in the weeks prior I'd say yes.

Dan (Philly)

Fast Forward two years.......Who is Tiger's playing partner(s)?

Michael Collins
  (12:14 PM)

Hunter Mahan

Andrew (WI)

Do you think there'll be any change in the selection process with Watson? A lot of the recent captains had 4 selections, but had the benefit of traveling the PGA Tour with their options

Michael Collins
  (12:16 PM)

Watson said in the press conference that he has carte blanche and is not opposed to changing it up. He didn't say he would but he said he will look at it and can change it if he wants.

Caddy Mike Corrao (Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida)

Micheal, Do you think Euros will counter with Monty again or Sandy Lyle as Scots, or stick with McGinley or Clarke as have been mentioned?

Michael Collins
  (12:18 PM)

Apparently Monty has already come out and said he will not be captain in 2014, but Darren Clarke would be a brilliant choice to counter Watson.

Jeff (Hoboken)

I know Greg Norman doesnt like Tiger, but how about his comment that Rory has the best chance to catch Jack? Don't we have to see Rory get to at least 10 or 12 before we start talking about 18?

Michael Collins
  (12:19 PM)

How early was it when we started talking about Tiger beating Jack? After his second major? If Rory wins one (or like I asked Santa, TWO) this year that talk is going to turn into a small roar.

Austin (Pittsburgh)

With some of the older players for the US struggling to get points at this last Ryder Cup, do you see the next team maybe giving some younger guys a chance?

Michael Collins
  (12:22 PM)

I do. But I think Watson will still wait til the last minute to see who is playing the best going in.

Andrew (WI)

Read that the Euro Tour is tweaking the Race to Dubai to create some kind of mini-Fedex Cup with their final few events. Is it just me or is their plan nonsensical?

Michael Collins
  (12:23 PM)

Seeing that this year Rory had it won before they tee'd it up meant they had to change the format so that wouldn't happen again. And yes they are doing the exact same thing as the FedEx Cup. And that had to be tweaked too remember

Michael Collins
  (12:26 PM)

Lois Lane, while I can't post your whole comment/question. I can answer you this. Time does help with forgiveness and also if the accomplishments on the course are greater than the mistakes off the course, that's how you will be remembered.

Lois Lane ((Hot, humid, wet S. Florida former fan))

Why would you possibly ask Santa for more for Rors? Did you bleach yourself? You lost this big fan.

Michael Collins
  (12:28 PM)

Aw man! Golf needs a dominant force, Tiger is on the back end of an amazing career so if we can be lucky enough to see Rory win at a pace like Tiger did, why wouldn't we wish for that? It's not that I like one guy better than the other, it's just that I route for the game of golf.Gonna miss ya as a fan.

John passehl (Lake zurich )

I broke my wrist and playing golf has been very painful ever since. Any advice?

Michael Collins
  (12:29 PM)

Do you have a Wii?!

Keith H (Seattle)

For those who don't think Watson will be a great captain, I suggest they read John Feinstein's "A Good Walk Spoiled." It went into great detail about how he approached his last Ryder Cup.

John passehl (Lake zurich )

I have been a strong advocate of "fantasy golf" on espn, will this ever become a reality?

Michael Collins
  (12:29 PM)

I'd love to see it too but I am low man on THAT totem pole.

Benzo (SLC)

With Tom Watson are there going to be "Table Tennis" matches or is it going to be all business?

Michael Collins
  (12:31 PM)

He definitely wants ping pong tables in the team room. He referenced that in his press conference, it was a great way to "let off steam" for the guys.

Andrew (WI)

Follow up to the Race to Dubai question...isn't one of the tournament they're folding into it a WGC event that a good 80% of the Euro membership can't qualify for?

Michael Collins
  (12:33 PM)

You could say that for most of the PGA Tour players too when it comes to WGC's.

Paul (Portland, OR)

How about boxing gloves to "let off steam"? ;-)

Michael Collins
  (12:34 PM)

Now I would PAY to see some golfers fight! Of course I wouldn't wanna see our team fighting one another at the Ryder Cup in the team room!!

Austin (Pittsburgh)

Haha, what a joker. You still have a big fan here Michael, funniest man in golf.

Michael Collins
  (12:35 PM)

Thanks Austin.

Bob (Seattle)

Heading to Kapalua in a couple of weeks?

Michael Collins
  (12:36 PM)

NOOOOOO!!! And it's killing me.

Bob (Seattle)

Oddest hazard on a golf course? I'm thinking a T-Rex that might roar during your backswing.

Michael Collins
  (12:38 PM)

That is probably the weirdest.

Caddy Mike Corrao (Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida)

Regardind the proposed anchor ban, assuming they go ahead with it, don't you think it should be implemented sooner than 2016...I think the tour is naive if they think that Keegan type criticism will not happen if say a belly/long putter player wins the Masters

Michael Collins
  (12:40 PM)

I agree, which is why I want an "anchored" putter to win the PGA for the next three years!

Claudia (Western NY)

Larry Nelson has been passed over for a lot of years. Is there a backstory?

Keith H (Seattle)

Do you have any insight as to the PGA of America finally "doing the right thing" and awarding Larry Nelson a Ryder Cup captaincy? Based on his background, it's a travesty he hasn't had one yet.

Michael Collins
  (12:42 PM)

He was promised the Captaincy for the 1995 team and then for some reason the PGA reneged on their verbal commitment they had given him. Other than that there hasn't been a public story on why the PGA continued to pass him over. He deserves a chance. Ironic if he'd win as captain.

Dan (CA)

Have you had a chance to see the 14yr old Tiger Woods interview making the rounds last week? Very interesting and makes me wonder, is Tiger the best American sports prodigy ever? So many expectations from such a young age, only to exceed all those expectations.

Michael Collins
  (12:44 PM)

Can't think of any that are/have been better.

Jeff (Hoboken)

Is there any way Graeme McDowell doesn't play in the final group at the 2013 US Open?

Michael Collins
  (12:45 PM)

Haha, seems like if you could bet that now it'd be a pretty safe wager!

Paul (Portland, OR)

A T-Rex roaring would be the distraction? I think a T-Rex at ALL would be hazardous!

Michael Collins
  (12:47 PM)

Wonder what made the owner say, "You know what this course needs... A T-Rex!" And everyone around him went, "Yeah, yeah, that's a great idea."

Jeff (Hoboken)

which Tour stop has the best food in the surrounding area?

Michael Collins
  (12:51 PM)

That's easy, it's a tie between Vegas and New Orleans. Vegas I don't think counts though because the food isn't "specific" to the area.

Paul (Portland, OR)

Geese can be a hazard... My dad had to abandon his ball next to a pond when a big white goose took exception to him coming anywhere near it. Rather comical.

Michael Collins
  (12:52 PM)

Geese are mean, dirty, and can be extremely aggressive. Most golf courses that have a problem with them get a dog or two.

Michael Collins
  (12:53 PM)

When I was caddying for Brenden Pappas he told me his course in South Africa had a policy of telling golfers not to look for their golf balls in the weeds. Black Mamba snakes, I'd need 3 dozen balls to play a round!

Michael Collins
  (12:56 PM)

Last couple minutes... Golf Christmas wishes?

Bob (Seattle)

Ever wear cargo shorts when playing golf? Or are you more of a plus fours type of guy?

Michael Collins
  (12:59 PM)

I try to follow whatever the rules of the course I'm playing asks. Of course, if it wasn't an issue until the back nine, you might just be trying to make me buy some logo stuff.

Bob (Seattle)

Wish list - Rounds of golf at Pine Valley and Cypress. Can you make it happen?

Michael Collins
  (12:59 PM)

NOPE

Tom (L.A.)

For golf Christmas, I hope some company creates a club where they promise me it's their longest and straightest ever and I'll get xx more yards... oh wait. That's every Christmas.

Michael Collins
  (12:59 PM)

Meet me at the merchandise show in January!

Michael Collins
  (1:00 PM)
