Chat with Jake Trotter

Jake Trotter
  (4:01 PM)

We'll get rolling here in a sec.

Kyle (NYC)

Do you think we could see someone like Wilson or Lynn slide back into those safety positions this next season?

Jake Trotter
  (4:03 PM)

Depends on what Jefferson does. If he leaves, I'm sure Mike would like to get someone with experience back there. If Jefferson stays, you could slot someone in like freshman Hatari Byrd and be fine.

Nathan (KC)

Odds Millard, Stills, and Tony J leave?

Jake Trotter
  (4:04 PM)

Pretty decent. I think it's better than 50/50 that Jefferson and Stills leave. I have heard that Millard is thinking really hard about leaving, too.

Nate Heupel (Oklahoma)

John Michael McGee has been in touch with OU coaches, and now looks like he's headed to Henderson State in Arkansas. Would OU take him back if he was available and the team was on board?

Jake Trotter
  (4:04 PM)

Up to Stoops.

Soonerfandave84 (OK)

Jake, does the mens team make the Tourney or NIT?

Jake Trotter
  (4:05 PM)

I'll stand by my preseason prediction of NIT.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Should Sooner fans be expecting good news soon from Adrian Baker after he decommmited from the Noles?

Jake Trotter
  (4:05 PM)

I would be reasonably optimistic. Mike Stoops' track record with DBs should be very attractive to someone like Baker.

Jeff (Thornton,CO)

Happy Holidays Jake...any rumblings about any of the asst. coaches going somewhere else???? Did Heupel turn down La Tech??? Norvell is the one I'm hearing because he wants to call plays....Wisconsin perhaps???

Jake Trotter
  (4:07 PM)

I know that report was out there, but I never was told that Heupel turned down La Tech. CBS reported that the OU assistant that interviewed was actually Cale Gundy. So who knows? Norvell was always the most likely to leave because he does want to call plays, and if a program like Wisconsin came calling, he'd have a hard time turning that down.

jason (oklahoma)

any word if jalen saunders will be playing in the cotton bowl?

Jake Trotter
  (4:08 PM)

Stoops will be addressing it during tomorrow's press conference.

Isaiah (Denver, CO)

Do you believe OU has lost their elite status with regards to recruiting? 6 juco players in last year's class and a noticeable drop off in 'starred' talent this year. I know that recruiting is a gamble on potential talent, but why doesn't OU get those 5 star players, like a USC or Alabama?

Jake Trotter
  (4:10 PM)

OU has top 10 classes virtually every year, and doesn't have a beach to recruit to like Miami or USC or a homegrown base like Ohio State or Texas or even Alabama. Admittedly, this has not been a great class, but it's not horrible, either. I don't buy into the fact that OU has lost its elite status based on one subpar recruiting class. OU has gotten plenty of 5-star players in the past and will continue to pick their spots in the future (they hosted a 5-star WR this weekend for crying out loud).

Tyrel (Chi-town)

I keep hearing Milliard is eyeing the NFL a little more than i was lead on, any truth from your standpoint? Comfortable with Rip as full time fb? or should coaches be scrambling on the recruiting trail?

Jake Trotter
  (4:11 PM)

I am hearing the same. That would be a devastating loss for the offense, bigger than Kenny Stills potentially in my opinion. Rip is a nice blocker, but he can't do the things that Millard can.

Cliff (Lawton)

Got your book, got one for my father this christmas also. Thought it was a really good read, What was your inspiration for the OU/Texas series and have you had this idea for a while?

Jake Trotter
  (4:13 PM)

Thanks, Cliff. The general idea was the publisher's, the details and construction of the book were mine... Amazingly, no one had ever written an OU-Texas book from the OU side of the rivalry. Glad you enjoyed it, and hope your dad does, too.

Nathan (KC)

Who's your guess on who are the starting receivers in 2013?

Jake Trotter
  (4:14 PM)

Metoyer, Neal, Saunders, Shepard.

Joe (OKC)

I read somewhere that walk-ons David Driscoll (DE) and Caleb Gastelum (LB) were named scout-team defensive players of the year. We are going to be super thin in nearly every defensive position. Are these two players that can actually help us out next season similarly to Dom Whaley in the early part of the 2011 season?

Jake Trotter
  (4:15 PM)

Both guys have actually appeared on the depth charts before (David at FB, Gastelum at LB). The way the defense is going with speed over all else, that probably hurts both players' chances. Sooners actually have options at LB/DE... now if either played safety...

soonerpeace (Norman)

Jake what recruit committed to the I-State's and Memphis of the worlds we steal next?

Jake Trotter
  (4:16 PM)

Ouch

Ryan (Norman)

If Stills, Jefferson and Millard leave, on a scale of 1-10, how worried will you be for next season?

Jake Trotter
  (4:18 PM)

People said the same in '07, when Curtis Lofton, Reggie Smith and Malcolm Kelly all bolted early. And then OU played for the national championship. The Sooners are better with Millard, Stills, Jefferson than without. But the Sooners have enough talent in the system to overcome the loss of any one player.

Rob (Tulsa )

Can Chuka Ndule and Geneo Grissom be the kind of DE that David King and R.J. Washington were in 2012. That is to say, players that were not dominant but did a decent job of holding their own, well for the most part.

Jake Trotter
  (4:19 PM)

Jake Trotter
  (4:20 PM)

No question. King had some versatility that the other guys don't really have, but it's not like OU overwhelmed people at DE this season. Sooners have a lot of young talent at DE with Ward, Dimon, Tapper, Onouha.

Brad (Norman)

Expect any good news this week in terms of recruiting?

Jake Trotter
  (4:20 PM)

Possibly.

David (TEXAS)

Jake, I can certainly understand Tony Jefferson leaving early. He should be a hot commodity. Trey Millard had a good year and his stock is not going to get any better next year. But why would Kenny Stills leave early? He had a good year but there are about 4 WR in the big 12 alone that are considered better.

Jake Trotter
  (4:22 PM)

With a new QB and possibly a new system next year, it's possible that Stills' production goes down next season. He's had a really good junior year, and he may think the time is now to capitalize off it.

Nathan (KC)

Without Millard and any reliable TE's, what will the offense look like?

Jake Trotter
  (4:23 PM)

Good question. If Bell is the QB, you'd think they'd want to retain some power element to the attack. I really don't know. Will depend on a number of factors.

soonerpeace (Norman)

Treadwell do we have a chance?

Jake Trotter
  (4:23 PM)

Yes

Sam (Norman,Ok)

Im hearing people saying were no longer elite. What do you make of this? I feel like 3 out of our last 3 bowls we have won and its been forgotten.

Jake Trotter
  (4:23 PM)

If OU isn't elite, who is? Alabama and nobody else?

PJ (NM)

When was the last time a team faced the three Heisman finalists in the same season?

Jake Trotter
  (4:24 PM)

I will try to find the answer to that question. Promise.

Kevin (Dallas, TX)

What's your prediction on OU's record next year? I see OU getting dominated by ND again unfortunately... but other than that...?

Jake Trotter
  (4:24 PM)

Early bird prediction? 10-2 again.

James (The Misplaced Sooner) (Champaign, IL)

How do you see Blake Bell fitting into the offense next season after the past couple seasons? And what about the Belldozer package? With Jones leaving, I think it's safe to say that a good chunk of Sooner nation is a bit leery about what next year brings.

Jake Trotter
  (4:25 PM)

I think the offense will resemble some combination of the Belldozer and the Landry Jones offense. More QB run game, but still plenty of four WR sets.

Jason (Jay, OK)

We have sold out every game since Stoops has been there. Is there talk of seating expansion? Seems it would be easy to fill in those two open corners...

Jake Trotter
  (4:26 PM)

You must not have been there last Thanksgiving for the Iowa State game.

Derek (OKC)

What are the chances that OU gets Treadwell, Adrian Baker?

Jake Trotter
  (4:27 PM)

Actually, pretty good, I think. Treadwell seemed to have had a good time this weekend, and Baker has already announced he's decommitted from Florida State and will probably end up deciding between Clemson and OU. Sooners are firmly in the mix on both.

Rob (Tulsa )

Are you kidding me Jake? Did you not get the memo? OU just lost a commit to Tulsa. You guys have to get on the program and stop sugar coating things.

Jake Trotter
  (4:28 PM)

You're right. They should fire Stoops and start from scratch.

Matthew (Minnesnowta)

Why not get Knight experience...start him..and keep the Belldozer in tact? Seems like Knight's ceiling is higher than Bell's

Jake Trotter
  (4:29 PM)

Trust me, that's not an unthinkable possibility. People within the program are fired up about Knight.

Ryan (Seattle)

Any current freshman or commits capable of making an impact next year on defense? Hear good things about Striker.

Jake Trotter
  (4:30 PM)

Gary Simon has a chance to start at CB. Tapper and Onuoha could play some at end, too. Zack Sanchez could factor in at NB or DB, especially if Wilson or Lynn gets moved to back safety.

Blaine (Gainesville, GA)

Can OU win the National Championship next season? I really can't see us beating a Bama...

Jake Trotter
  (4:30 PM)

They could, but I'm not picking them.

Judge Chamberlain Haller (Beecham County Alabama)

Mr. Trotter! Merry Christmas to you and all the little trotters.

Jake Trotter
  (4:30 PM)

No little Trotters yet.

Tom (Dallas )

Does that 10-2 record come with a conference championship and a BCS bowl? If it does not, it will be considered an utter failure.

Jake Trotter
  (4:31 PM)

It could. I penciling in losses at South Bend and Stillwater. That might be enough to win the Big 12. I think OU will have the best team in the Big 12 next season, but the schedule favors OSU.

sam (norman)

Not just based on recruiting, what do you make of people saying the A&M game is a "must win" to keep an elite status. Am i just a homer or is OU an elite program reguardless?

Jake Trotter
  (4:32 PM)

People will forget about the Cotton Bowl by March. Win or lose, OU will continue to be OU. You don't lose a reputation built on 70 years with one loss.

Blaine (Gainesville, GA)

Jake, does a win in the Cotton Bowl against A&M help our recruiting, and could it help jumpstart the 2013 season?

Jake Trotter
  (4:33 PM)

A win would help blunt some of A&M's momentum, and could give the Sooners some momentum heading into the offseason. Then again, OU got blasted in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, then turned around and advanced to the '08 title game. I've learned not to place too much emphasis in a bowl game.

matt (okc)

who do you give the edge for the qb job next year

Jake Trotter
  (4:34 PM)

Bell. The job is his to lose.

Scott (Dallas)

Although Norman does not have the "Big City" and/or "beaches" that some of the other Top recruiting schools have, I would have to think our facilities and NFL pipeline history would be second to very few, and a huge plus when recruiting 5 Stars. Why not more success? College Station and Austin are no glamour spots either!!!

Jake Trotter
  (4:35 PM)

College Station and Austin are in the same state as the best high school talent in the country. That's a big advantage. And while OU's facilities are great, they're no better than OSU's, Texas' or A&M's.

Adrian Peterson (MPLS)

Jake, am i sicker than you ever thought I was entering this season? And do I get robbed for MVP and CPOY honors by Brady, and the greatest "regular season" QB ever?

Jake Trotter
  (4:36 PM)

I had Adrian Peterson on my fantasy team LAST year, and decided not to keep him because of how bad he was. Slight mistake.

Kelly (Houston)

When does Texas move on from Mack? Or do you think he sets the timetable?

Jake Trotter
  (4:36 PM)

Another mediocre season might do it. Next year is big for Mack.

Derek (Tulsa)

Next Commit to Oklahoma is?

Jake Trotter
  (4:37 PM)

Could be juco TE Emmanuel Bibbs

Nathan (KC)

Starting DT's next year? Is that what holds us back?

Jake Trotter
  (4:37 PM)

Starting safeties and starting LBs are big questions, as well... starting QB, too.

jason (ok)

give us your cotton bowl score prediction.......

Sean (Norman)

What is your personal prediction for the cotton bowl? Do you think the Sooners will pull out a win?

Jake Trotter
  (4:38 PM)

Will wait for the game to get closer before giving my prediction. Leaning A&M, though.

Hope Solo (OKC)

What do you make of Mike Gundy not wanting to schedule SUPER POWERS like Arizona and Mississippi St?

Jake Trotter
  (4:40 PM)

Thought it was pretty weak. Beating Savannah St is not going to elevate OSU's program.

Bryan (Broken Arrow)

The "we lost a commit to Tulsa" is so overblown. The kid wants to play DE and he's an OL if he went to OU.

Jake Trotter
  (4:41 PM)

Exactly.

Jason (Joplin, MO)

Jake, enough about the "Elite" questions, OU "finally" got a DT commit so does this mean that the big month of December for recruiting is slowly gaining some steam? Also how many JUCO player do you see OU signing and is Q. Russel one of them?

Jake Trotter
  (4:41 PM)

My guess would be that Russell goes to Nebraska. Maybe OU can snag him. But I favor the Huskers in that battle.

Rick (Norman)

Does Kendall Thompson get a chance to be starting QB?

Jake Trotter
  (4:42 PM)

Next year? Longshot.

sam (norman)

Jake, what sooner player has surprised you most this year?

Jake Trotter
  (4:43 PM)

That's an interesting question. No one player has surprised me, however, the way the offensive line has been able to overcome its rash of injuries has been surprising. Shead, Irwin, Ikard, Lane... those are tough dudes.

Isaiah (Denver, CO)

How well do you think the OU defense will be next year? They lose quite a bit of experience along the D-line, corner and safety. Or, will another with with Mike Stoops makes a difference?

Jake Trotter
  (4:44 PM)

I don't think the Sooners will be horrible, but I have a hard time seeing OU fielding an elite defense, especially without Jefferson. The d-line won't be dominant, and Colvin, would be the only elite player in the secondary.

matt (okc)

who's a bigger threat next year? OSU or TCU

Jake Trotter
  (4:45 PM)

OSU, because the Sooners have to play in Stillwater (OSU also gets TCU at home). TCU has to go to Norman and Stillwater.

Duane (Norman)

With the change of defensive philosophy and the losses coming on the offensive side of the ball, it look like we may be down for the next year or two but then we will be back pretty strong. What is your take on this?

Jake Trotter
  (4:46 PM)

Maybe, but OU could very easily be strong next year if Bell fulfills some of his potential. The problem is the schedule. Sooners figure to be underdogs in South Bend and Stillwater.

Matt F. (Owasso)

What is you take on how OU can defend Manziel?

Jake Trotter
  (4:47 PM)

Can't allow him to scramble for big gains. If that means holding up on the blitzes, so be it. He's killed defenses with his wheels. OU has to negate that and make him beat the defense with his arm.

Eli (London)

What bowl game are you personally most excited for?

Jake Trotter
  (4:47 PM)

The three best games are the title game, Fiesta Bowl and Cotton Bowl.

Kyle (NYC)

I know it's early, but if you had to guess what does our starting D look like next year? Especially along the line and secondary.

Jake Trotter
  (4:49 PM)

DE: Grissom, Chuka; DT: Phillips, who knows; LB: Shannon, Nelson; CB: Colvin, Simon/Cortez; NB: Wilson; S: Lynn, Byrd.

Soonerfandave84 (OK)

Jake, if TJ goes pro, does Gabe Lynn slide over to FS? I see him struggling there. He hits hard but doesnt always wrap up.

Jake Trotter
  (4:50 PM)

Possible. They like Lynn at nickelback, and I'm not sure if he's a fit at back safety. But someone is going to have to play there, and if Jefferson leaves, they don't seem to have a lot of options.

Scott (Louisville)

Jake, Rank these four programs in terms of success in the next four years: Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, Texas, Texas A&M

Jake Trotter
  (4:50 PM)

1. OU2. A&M3. OSU4. Texas

Eli (London)

What do you make of the philosophy that a scrambling qb is a tired qb that continues to take hits over a game?

Jake Trotter
  (4:51 PM)

That's why OU doesn't want to go with a full-fledged K-State offense next season.

Isaiah (Denver, CO)

With OU tinkering with 6 to 7 DB's playing to stop the Big XII offenses, does that pose a risk or disadvantage when playing out of conference games against teams like Notre Dame or teams from other conferences?

Jake Trotter
  (4:52 PM)

The risk is that your run defense becomes vulnerable, as Lache Seastrunk, Tavon Austin and Joe Randle all exposed.

Matthew (Minnesnowta)

Crazy question. I haven't heard any rumors about this at all..but just wondering if you could ever see Bob Stoops trying to give it a go as a coach in the NFL.

Jake Trotter
  (4:53 PM)

Doubt it. Think he realizes how much of a grind the NFL is. If he wanted to coach in the NFL, wouldn't he already be there? Maybe the Dallas Cowboys make a run at him if they get rid of Garrett. But Stoops has turned down so many other jobs (Notre Dame, Florida, Browns), it's hard to see him leaving at this point.

Rick (Norman)

bama or nd?

Jake Trotter
  (4:53 PM)

Bama.

Jake Trotter
  (4:54 PM)

But in a nail-biter.

Jake (OK)

What one recruit is the biggest must get for OU? How many commits will we have on National Signing Day?

Jake Trotter
  (4:54 PM)

Quincy Russell (or Toby Johnson) would be a huge pull because either would have a chance to start right away at a position of need, DT.

Chris (Wylie, TX)

I keep hearing that Trevor Knight might give Bell a run for his money next season. Can you offer any insight into each of their ability to run Heupel's offense?

Jake Trotter
  (4:56 PM)

I keep hearing the same. The staff really likes the total package Knight brings, accuracy, mobility, poise, leadership... Bell is a big-time talent, too, with a big arm.

Derrin (Plano, TX)

Does OU need to priortize Texas first and foremost, and pursue a few top prospects out of state? Especially now, with TAMU emerging as recruiting power more than ever in the SEC? Seems like their priority/focus has not been the same as it use to be, your thoughts?

Jake Trotter
  (4:57 PM)

Sooners have definitely gone with a more national approach. Maybe they feel the competition in Texas getting tighter. I don't have a problem with it. The wider the net, the bigger the pool of players to chase.

Soonerfandave84 (OK)

Jake, in regards to recruiting, if OU signs Treadwell and a couple DTs and then like the last few years steal a couple on signing day, doesnt this class reach around the 10-15 range if not a little higher

Jake Trotter
  (4:58 PM)

Yeah, I think so, and the chances of that happening aren't unfathomable.

Ryan (Norman)

Do you expect Blake Bell to surprise everyone next season and end up having a great, accurate arm? Also, do you think Adrian Peterson will break the NFL record for most rushing yards?

Jake Trotter
  (4:59 PM)

Bell has a decent chance of being the All-Big 12 QB next season... yes, I think AD breaks the record.

Soonerfandave84 (OK)

Isnt it funny that earlier this year OU fans were clamoring for Bell over LJ, now Bell is being replaced by Trevor Knight

Jake Trotter
  (4:59 PM)

The backup QB in Norman is always a superstar.

Chad (San Diego, Ca)

How would you grade Tony Jefferson if he enters the draft after this season?

Jake Trotter
  (4:59 PM)

I think he's a top-three round pick, at worst.

Jake Trotter
  (5:01 PM)

Guys, that's all the time we've got today. Check out SoonerNation throughout the week, as we'll be following OU's bowl prep... We'll be doing the chat again next Monday, same time, same place... Until then, have a great week.
