Greetings... Kevin is on double-secret assignment. My name is Ted. I will be doing the typing today. Fire away.
How does Stanford do next year?
May need to wait on some guys to make stay-or-go NFL decisions, but the Cardinal figure to be ranked top-10-15 in the preseason. There are some key losses: Stepfan Taylor, Chase Thomas, Shayne SKov, etc., but Stanford has recruited well, particularly on the O-line. The Cardinal should be a factor in the Pac-12 north.
So what are the odds of Chip Kelly leaving next year, and if he stays how good would Oregon be next year? As for the rest of the Pac-12, how good will the conference be next year? Do you think anybodys season (UCLA, Oregon State) seasons were flukes?
you have exceeded you limit on questions. Most NFL guys think Kelly is gone. I hope he stays, but the odds seem high he doesn't. If he stays -- or even if he goes -- Oregon will be the favorite in the Pac-12 North next year, a likely top-10 preseason team. I think the Pac-12 has a chance to match what it did this year, which was post a very good season.
Is David Shaw a Stanford coach for life now?
He has repeatedly said that's his hope. It's a great job in a great place to live. He's a family guy who probably likes being settled. So my feeling is he'll at least be at Stanford a long time.
The Bruins look poised to bring in another highly rated class this year on top of their existing talent. Do you think UCLA is ready to compete in the PAC for the next few years?
Absolutely... i feel nothing but positive vibes around the Bruins, starting with the fact they did what they did with a redshirt freshman QB with huge upside. The tide might be turning in LA.
Ted, I got you a lump of coal this year.
But wanted clean energy!
So is Kiffin's decision on continuing his play-calling duties final? Or do you think he's just waiting until after the bowl game to prevent further distractions?
It's probably final. He has a lot of pride, and he likely wants to prove wrong the nattering nabobs of negativism. But I do think his continuing to call plays is a mistake. We shall see.
Is that the same as Double-Secret Probation that the Deltas were put on by Dean Wormer?
Even more secret than that. By just typing that, I'm likely to get water boarded in Bristol.
What's your outlook for ASU next year?
Another team on the clear uptick... First question is does Will Sutton return. The Sun Devils need upgrades at receiver and DB also. But QB Taylor Kelly, a good stock of RBs and some nice talent coming back on the defensive front 7 coming back makes the Sun Devils a team that should be in the mix in the Pac-12 South. Could be another step forward in 2013, potentially even cracking top-25.
Hello Mr. Gemmiller. Is your beef with the recent NCAA eligibility decisions (Long, Tuel) that they are wrong per se, or are you more critical of the NCAA's refusal to give justifications for their decisions?
The NCAA should always error on the side of helping athletes. Is it such a bad thing a guy wants to STAY IN SCHOOL? Miss nine games due to injury? Yeah... come on back. Return to school after some personal problems? Yeah, we want to help. I hear the arguments why the NCAA is like it is. But those arguments are weak.
Who are the top 5 coaches in the P12?
Other than me and Kevin? Kelly, Riley, Shaw, Whittingham & Rich Rodriguez.
Ted, what is up with the post for your chat going to the wrong place? I am wasting time out here, but would like to be efficient while doing so.
sorry.... but it was a test of skill. Drop you into the Internet wilderness and see if you can work your way back. Congrats on that by the way.
Despite Ubben's argument, do you really feel the Big 12 is better than the Pac 12?
No... but it's pure opinion. He made some solid points. We could counter, but it's just selective emphasis. Of course, the measure will be the 3 Pac-12-Big 12 bowl games. Whoever wins 2 of 3 can claim the prize, even if it's still highly subjective.
Which North-South match-up that is not going to happen next year would you most like to see? (USC-Oregon is too easy)
Stanford-USC...and I believe UCLA and Oregon wil play. Both sides should have good depth.
I like your best coaches list other than Todd Graham should be over Rich Rod.
Rich Rod's West Virginia success, including a BCS bowl victory gives him an edge. Track record advantage.
Don't you think Chip Kelly should come out and say in front of a camera that he is coming back next year? This issue is the main reason why not many high school players have committed yet. Is Chip doing a disservice to the Ducks by not saying that he is coming back next year?
Kelly can do whatever he wants. While some Oregon fans are bothered, the winning holds sway with the vast majority. It's clear that he's not ready to stand in front of a camera and say that. A lot of the way Chip sometimes conducts himself doesn't help his program, but the total package is previously unimaginable success.
I see your West Virginia success and BCS bowl and raise you RR Michigan un-success and Todd Graham's Tulsa win over Notre Dame.
Michigan failed more than Rich Rod did. And beating Notre Dame before this year was pretty common.
Travis Long was recently named the 2012 Kathi Goertzen Coug of the Year by the readers of Cougcenter.com. He barely edged out Steve Gleason. Do you agree with the choice?
I love Gleason. Long is a strong choice for being a four-year starter who fought hard for a losing team. As for the choice, that's up to Cougs. You'll never get me to say anything bad about either guy.
Are you guys going to revisit your best-case, worst case scenarios? The Beavers are on track to be better then the best case and CU was worse then the worst case. Did anyone else fall outside of the worst-best bracket (USC, Cal, Utah, UCLA etc.)
I may be retiring those... I was spending hours putting them together and some felt like they got too weird as I tried to top the previous year. But that's a potential offseason post.
Why was Arizona so flat in their bowl game? They had no business winning that thing. More to do with the coaches or the players?
Seemed flat for the start but not thereafter. Nevada is pretty good. The Wildcats have been bad on defense all year, so it wasn't surprising to see them gashed. A win is a win, and Arizona should some fortitude pulling that one out of their rear ends.
Riley and the Beavers have had a heck of a season. When do we know the past two years were the aberration, and how much does that really matter?
I don't know if Oregon State will ever be a program that won't experience an occasional downturn. Riley's longterm track record is pretty amazing. I think the last 2 years were due to what downturns are usually due to: 1. Recruiting misses; 2. Injuries; 3. Young players forced into action. Things stack up pretty well for next season, though there are questions in the secondary and at DT. Things need to work themselves out at QB.
If UCLA is the favorite in the south next year, who are the primary challengers?
Arizona State and USC.
What is your take on the Badgers hiring Anderson from USU?
Good hire. Seems like a good fit.
How does Oregons defense look for next year?
Strong, particularly on the D-line & secondary. Hurts to lose Jordan, Clay
Taylor Kelly's numbers stacked up very well against Osweiler's last year. Factor in the lack of talent at receiver this year and it's pretty amazing what he was able to do. With 2 years of eligibility left, does he have a chance to do something special in Tempe?
Really like his game. Seems like a nice fit for the scheme, too. If he gets some better receivers, the Sun Devils could be explosive.
Ted, with Barner graduating and DAT's concern of taking on alot of hits do you see Byron Marshall being able to be a top notch running back? How much impact do you think Tyner can have?
That's hard to say. I'm not a fan of projecting forward for incoming players -- JC or freshmen. RB will be a question for the Ducks entering spring practice. Marshall should be first in line but he didn't do enough to seem like a sure-thing.
Is Kiffin's seat officially the hottest in the league?
When do the PAC12 football schedules come out...and what is the hold up?
Hopefully everything comes out in January.
Kiffin recently said that he's going to be making small changes in the defense for the Tampa 2. What's your take on this? Wouldn't you think he would scrap the Tampa 2 and hire a DC that can stop the spread?
Well, if he brings in a good defensive coordinator, that coordinator is going to tell Kiffin, "It's my defense. Back off." The incoming coordinator should choose the scheme. If he doesn't, then Kiffin didn't hire a good one.
I would like to see the Beavers play Florida State next year since we have the same open date maybe neutral site. Can you pass that along to the proper authorities and make it happen?
Everyone associated with both schools regularly lurks on these chats, so consider the message delivered.
How bad does not getting a deal done with DirecTV hurt my legacy?
It's disappointing to everyone, but I think the Pac-12 fought the good fight. Direct TV wants a special deal. The Pac-12 refused. Direct TV is screwing over its West Coast customers. I can't understand how you could subscribe if you are a Pac-12 sports fan. Dump 'me. Get cable.
Tell me something I want to hear
The check is in the mail.
Is the Pac obligated by contract to have its championship on a Friday? It's awfully tough on the fans to make a 5 PM game on a weekday, often with only a week's notice.
That's what Fox wanted the first two years. It rotates to ESPN, so the date isn't set in stone.
Can USC win a national title with Lane Kiffin as the head coach? Nobody seems to get less out of their talent at this point.
Kiffin had a nice year coaching in 2011. He had a poor year in 2012. Typically you don't get the USC job when you're still figuring out how to be a head coach, but that is the case. I still think Kiffin has a chance to become a good head coach. He, however, needs to get better at self-analysis. He has the resources to hire a great staff and then get out of their way. He needs to do that.
Do you and K-Bone get bonuses for the number of site visits to the blog?
we work for free.
Us Cal Bears were pretty bummed to see Ron Gould let go. How do you feel about Dykes not holding on to any of the former staff. Especially one with such longstanding success and ties to the University as Gould. Hard to argue with his string of RB's...
Transitions are difficult. Dykes has his own preferences and loyalties and his offense will be much different than what Tedford ran. Gould has a distinguished record, but maybe it was time for him to move on.. and he's a head coach now at UC Davis.
Ted, can you stop answering questions from the same people over and over. You need to spread it around or we'll replace you.
I answer good questions without looking at the name. And I play favorites. Where the hell is Ducktails...
With Jeff Tuel leaving for the NFL and a somewhat experienced QB stepping up next season with one RS Freshman and true freshman Tyler Brugman coming in to compete, what do you see coming from Washington State Football and Mike Leach in the next couple seasons?
I continue to believe Leach will win in Pullman because he won in Lubbock. I hope he has the humility to realize he made some mistakes with his public comments about his team this year. i think Leach has a vision for his team, and it may take a couple of years to recruit to that vision. I do think the Cougs will win more than three games next year. Not sure if they are ready to get to a bowl game, though.
Ted, if you had to guess now, what record does the Pac-12 get this bowl season?
Does Mannion or Vaz have NFL potential? (Starter or second-string)
Mannion has the size and arm NFL coaches will like, but he's got to win the job in Corvallis first.
Who are 5 guys that could be in the Heisman race next season from the pac-12?
Ka'Deem Carey, Taylor Kelly, Marcus Mariota, Brett Hundley, Marqise Lee. Got to win, though. Few Heisman finalists come from middling teams.
6-2 eh? Who do you think will lose?
The teams with fewer points, silly.
I'm not prepared to give that away yet... you must await my picks. Kevin is already calling me while i'm doing his chat to try and distract me. I say 2 losses because it seems like at least two teams are going to blow it.
Will the Washington program take the next step in 2013 and make a serious run at the conference title?
I think Washington will take a next step. Could win 9 games. But I'm not sure they can get by Oregon and Stanford at the top of the conference. And Oregon State also looks like a top-25 team.
Your thoughts on what round Franklin gets drafted?
Since he learned to hold onto the ball, I'd say third round, maybe second. He's a talent.
I'm calling because it's so cold down here!! Can you please bring me a blanket?
No... get back into the corner, Smeagol.
Which division is better next season? North or South?
I know you're afraid to answer ND/Te'o questions - Don't want to give NBC any more hype - but c'mon - the Te'o has bad stats question is truth - please address it. How does a mediocre player make it to NYC?
I think Te'o is a great player whose contribution can't be measured in pure stats. I saw him play multiple times and was always impressed. Do it this way; I think Chase Thomas had a very good season without matching his numbers of a year ago. But if you paid attention, he was constantly badgering the opposing offense. Te'o is a future NFL All-Pro.
OK gang... got to hit the road. Thanks for letting me step in for Kevin.
