Hello, ladies and gentlemen. While I watch Rex Ryan try to explain the debacle of the Jets season, let's chat Yankees, shall we?
Do you think the Yanks organization is surprised at the aggressive nature that the Blue Jays are pursuing players this off season?
Hey, Bill. I don;t know if the Yankees are specifically surprised by the Blue Jays activity this winter, but I do know people in the organization expected a lot of teams to be aggressive because of the windfall of the new cable TV contract. Plus, of course, the revenue-sharing pot, to which the Yankees are the No. 1 contributor
Yankees look real, real good on paper right now. Would a 100 - 105 win season be out of the realm of possibility?
tell me you're joking, please
Heard a week ago that Ichiro deal was almost done. Have I missed something and it has been completed, or is it still not official?
still not official. was told today there is still "some language to be worked out." didn;t specify if the language was english or Japanese. Also, Ichiro has yet to take his physical. May be finished, finally, by the end of the week
Do you think the Yankees could strike a deal with Washington by trading Granderson with Hughes or Nova Moving. Possibly bringing in Morse, and Zimmerman or another quality starter
The three guys you mention are really the Yankees only moveable parts at the major-league level. Whether they would fetch that much, considering the questions surrounding Hughes and especially Nova, and the fact that Granderson will be a one-year rental, is open to question
If George Steinbrenner had not passed away a few years ago, would the Yankees be trying to lower their team salary for next season?
don't know. I'll see if the Long Island Psychic or whatever her name is can ask him
I don't think the Yankees will be better by retaining Granderson and Cano this year. Why wouldn't Cashman trade one of them knowing the 2014 budget edict and get what he can to build this team? Toronto is really improved and NYY has enough for Wild Card or more. Thank you for this forum.
i agree on Granderson but I'm not ready to give up on Cano yet and neither I think are the Yankees. They certainly need one more key piece and I think there is a possibility he will trade Grandy. and you're very welcome. thanks for joining us
Any chance of the rumors of the Yanks getting Alfonso Soriano from the cubs if they're willing to pay 28 of the 36 million he owed? I don't know how badly his skills have eroded but he is a RH bat . Your take?
Doubt it highly mainly because of the 189M salary ceiling for next year. Can't see them taking on that much money for a talented but flawed player
hello, rather than pretending the yankees are doing something let the kids play thats all, i rather see that than a bunch of journeymen its nuts.
that is probably the wise choice but the problem is, the Yankees can;t sell $1500 tix --or $300 tix for that matter -- by fielding a team that is clearly in rebuilding mode.
The problem with the Yankees grand plan for 2015 is that there are no impact position players available in free agency. If the kids don't pan out ( Mason Williams, Tyler Austin, Gary Sanchez ) we're screwed! Remember the killer B's. We almost have to sign Granderson & Cano, and Cano will be a Dodger next year! Should have made a run at Hamilton, just saying.
I hear you, but I think Cano will be a Yankee next year. The Killer B's have been a bust but it is not unusual for highly-touted pitchers to crap out. Old enough to remember Generation K? The position players have a better chance of succeeding because they don;t get injured as often as pitchers, but williams, austin and sanchez are still several years from being ready
Hi Wally,Regarding the future of the Yanks, there's a reason why Hal is big on getting under the $189 mil mark by 2014, besides just avoiding luxury tax penalties. Could be three things: 1) prearation to go up for sale 2) plan to consistently pocke profits without putting it into the team (see Loria) 3) its to prepare for free agency in 2015 when Verlander, King Felix, Kershaw and more are free agents where the Yanks will have flexible spending with no big tax ramifications. What could be the most likely in your opinion. Thanks!
i think they are all possibilities but I tend to lean toward 1). I think Hal might be preparing for a sale within the next 5 years
if Toronto runs away with it, could you imagine a situation in July where the Yankees are sellers?
very difficult to imagine such a scenario because the financial demands of the franchise and the stadium practiciually demand the Yankees to be contenders every year. If what you propose comes to pass, I think you might see the Yankees as desperation buyers, not sellers
Right now, who do you think will be the opening day catcher?
if the season were starting today with the current roster, i think it would have to be Stewart
as a yankee fan should i be nervous about the dickey trade or be happy they gave up a bunch of great prospects?
All I can say is the Yankees handled Dickey pretty well in their one and only meeting last year. But if I were them, I wouldn;t like the thought of facing that Toronto staff, with or without Dickey
Is Jeter expected to return by Opening Day?
As of the last time I asked, yes
Do you see any young talent from the Yanks farm teams stepping up Bichette Jr, Pitchers, etc? Any news on Pineda?
Bichette has a ways to go before he his big-league ready. You might see Adam Warren again, but Banuelos is out after surgery and Betances is struggling right now in winter ball. Pineda has begun a light throwing program but is not expected back before late June, early July at the earliest
The Yanks havent done much to address the bullpen, any idea why not? there were some quality arms out there that they seemed to have passed on
probably because the bullpen wasn't much a problem last season, even with Mo out from May and Joba not back until August. Bigger fish to fry this winter
What are the chances Cashman pulls off a big trade?
wish I knew. I texted him today and his respnse: "nothing enlightening to share." which could nmean nothing is going on, or he can;t talk about it yet. But he has surprised us before and as strange as this will sound, I would not be surprised if he surprises us again
What do you see the Yankees doing at catcher? Please don't say A.J. Pierzysnki...
Hope not. Had enuf trouble spelling Mintkiewicz a few years ago. Is that right?
Would the Yankees actually go into the season with Stewart/Cervelli at catcher? Should fans expect a major upgrade?
I would not expect a major upgrade becauce there isn;t a major upgrade available. and I think they would at least start the season with Stew Rominelli at catcher -- I;m throwing Romine into the mix, too -- because Girardi doesn;t think offense is particularly important in a catcher
Is pedro feliciano still a yankee or has his career ended?
Feliciano's contract with the yankees is up --$8M for two seasons without throwing a pitch -- but he is pitching in winter ball in Puerto Rico and will attempt a comeback with someone in 2013
Do u see the Yankees trading granderson and pursue Michael bourn?
Yes and no. I can see the Yankees trading Grandy but was told yesterday that they have no interest in Bourn; too expensive
IF the Mariners would do it, what would we have to give up to get Felix from the Mariners?
forget this fantasy. Please. for your own sake
Today's "Worse contract: A-rod or Sanchez" article you posted is really embarassing even for you, Wally. If you're fresh out of story ideas, how about posting a request for some on the blog?
Does Nunez have a future in the organization? He can't field well enough to play SS, and they don't like him at 3B or OF, but it seems he should be more than a right-handed DH.
that is a great question and one the Yankees never really give a straight answer to. by now, they know their original plan to make him Jeter's successor at SS is a bust. He has offensive abilities and could be a DH but I think his real value is as trade bait
We do not know how Mariano will come back, so do you foresee the Yankees resigning Soriano? Thank you!
I agree, Mariano's future performance is far from guaranteed but the Yankees expect him to perform the way he always has. And they say "no chance" they'll bring back soriano at the money he's asking
Being a great team on paper in December doesn't equal wins in the summer. Seeing is believing and I'm not ready to crown the Jays East champs yet. My question is why does the media so fast to get on/off a team? Why can't we let things play out before people annoint teams as winners or losers.
Rich, I;m not sure who has anointed the Blue Jays anything -- I certainly haven;t-- but I think it would be foolish to ignore the fact that they should be much improved in 2013
Think the Yanks will make a play for me?
only if you shorten your name. Change it to A. Pierzynski
hey wally, more than usual toronto fans on here we should hand them the championship tropht now lol
It's not the Stanley Cup but i'm sure they'd take it, eh?
It's Mientkiewicz Wally, pronounced Mientkiewicz.
see what I mean?
do you think the yanks lost on the pineda trade?
still too early to say. what if he comes back and pitches well and Montero remains a mediocre hitter?
Sorry, everyone, but the ball has dropped on 2012. An early happy holidays to everyone and we'll do this again in 2013
