Chat with Dan Rafael

D$
  (11:59 AM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the final boxing chat of 2012. Not much fight action this week but the awards have been rolling out all week and there's still been plenty of news as we look back on 2012 and look ahead to 2013. So check the sked, the rankings, the awards, the blogs and the news stories and let's get to it!

Mike (Massapequa )

I know the CBS show with Santa Cruz did a nice rating and kept 90% of the basketball game - how did the NBC fight do?

D$
  (12:01 PM)

No official word yet on the NBC ratings, although I have been badgering the network and the promoter. That said, they did tell me they thought it did "well." I know they were hoping for at least 1 million viewers and I think it did at least that.

Steven (Denver)

Hey Dan! One of your blogs a few months ago mentioned two new years ever cards in Japan but only one is on the schedule. Did the card in Tokyo get cancelled? Thanks and have a great New Years!!

D$
  (12:03 PM)

It's still on. Not sure what happened, just got cut by accident.

Beto (Compton )

Who do you think Canelo is going to fight next, seems like mayweather is going to fight Robert Guerrero?

D$
  (12:03 PM)

Not settled yet. My understanding is that Canelo is pushing for Trout but we shall see.

Mike (Massapequa )

Adamek got a gift last week NBC coverage after the fight was terrible - have you ever seen the scorecards misread and a decision changed like that ?

D$
  (12:04 PM)

Adamek did get a gift, but I have seen cards read wrongly before. In this instance, it was not Buffer's fault. He was given the wrong score by the commission.

Hamzah (Slough)

Is Chris John a future hall of famer in your opinion?

D$
  (12:04 PM)

Unlikely.

steve ramz (staten island)

will lucas matthyse ever fight a big name any time soon? his division is loaded but the real top guys r being avoided

D$
  (12:05 PM)

Matthysse will fight anyone. He had a good 2012 and hopefully his promoter, Golden Boy, will make a big fight for him in 2013.

Chris (Boston)

Who are you hearing that Bryant Jennings will fight on March 3rd?

D$
  (12:05 PM)

TBA.

craig (houston)

what's next for Brandon Rios? Still looking at a rematch with Alvarado?

D$
  (12:05 PM)

Probably a rematch in March.

George (Moreno Valley,CA)

Dan, was there ever any sort of talk for Rios-Marquez? And I hear TALK of Mayweather-Guerrero. Not official though right?

D$
  (12:08 PM)

Marquez-Rios was discussed as a possible fight for Cowboys Stadium awhile ago. Mayweather-Guerrero is the likely Mayweather fight in May but not official at this point.

Jesse (El Mirage, AZ)

Dan, do you think that Gary Russel Jr.'s lack of stepping up competition is because his handlers think their is a glaring weakness in his game that can be exposed? I'm just baffled at his career development to date.

D$
  (12:08 PM)

I have no idea. He is probably the single worst handled elite prospect I have ever seen. HORRIBLE. He has been matched with dead men and he has never fought in Washington DC, the one place where he could really build a fan base. I am utterly baffled.

Al (York Pa)

Dan: Do you see a Bute-Froch match coming up? Probably in Canada?

D$
  (12:09 PM)

No, the rematch wont happen in March, as originally scheduled.

Al (York Pa)

Dan: Will Marquez demand, rightfully so, the larger share of the money for the 5th Paq fight?

D$
  (12:11 PM)

He'll get a big raise, but probably wont get the lion's share and he doesnt deserve it. Pacquiao is still the bigger PPV draw.

Matt (KC)

Any news or ideas on where Pavlik goes in light of his cancelled big fight with Ward. He needs to step it up the level of competition to stay relevant. I think a fight with Froch or Chavez makes sense.

D$
  (12:12 PM)

Froch is going to fight Kessler most likely, so Pavlik will probably look to face Bute.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, do you get a trophy for your 2012 Boxingheads Championship?

D$
  (12:12 PM)

I should!

Keith H (Seattle)

Just a simple Happy New Year to you and all the freaks with an RIP to Angelo, Burt and Emanuel.

Steve (Kansas)

Any word on where the Matthysee fight will land?

D$
  (12:13 PM)

Hard Rock in Las Vegas. Jan. 26.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, when will you be getting your own SportsCenter commercial? I mean, Professor John Clayton has one, for Chrissakes!?

D$
  (12:14 PM)

LOL, that would be epic.

Al (York Pa)

Dan: How will you ring in the New Year?

D$
  (12:15 PM)

I dont know yet. I need to talk to Mrs. DTM.

Barksdale (Baltimore)

I thought -- compared to the Golden Boy card on CBS -- that the production on the NBC card was very flat. Just an opinion.

D$
  (12:19 PM)

They did a good job but they need to tighten the show. There was no reason to have 20 minutes of nothing between fights and then cut off right away after the main evnet.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Does Bryant Jennings and Main Events have an exclusive contract with NBC Sports Network, and what are the chances that Jennings and Deontay Wilder meet next year, whether it be NBC, HBO or SHO?

D$
  (12:21 PM)

Main Events has a deal with NBC Sports Net but they can put their fighters anywhere they want. That said I doubt we will see Wilder-Jennings any time soon.

B Magic (TX)

Who would you rather see Pavlik fight now that Ward is injured? Bute or Abraham? and which does he have a better chance of beating?

D$
  (12:22 PM)

I'd be happy with either.

Chris (UK)

Hey Dan, How comes no J'Leon Love in your prospects list - FUTURE WORLD CHAMP right there!

D$
  (12:22 PM)

Had room for 20 guys. Not everyone makes the cut.

Antonio (Philadelphia)

Dan is it true that Adrien Broner will be facing Gavin Rees? Mismatch in your opinion?

D$
  (12:24 PM)

Yes, that fight is agreed to for Feb. 16 on HBO in Atlantic City.

RJ (OH)

What the hell was wrong with Tor Hamer? I was really looking forward to that fight.

D$
  (12:24 PM)

He quit. Simple as that. He told me he wasn't feeling well. Poor excuse.

Anthony (Iowa)

Any news on where Arreola's fight will land? Is he in shape?

D$
  (12:25 PM)

They are trying to resked it.

Joe (PA)

Any word on how the negotiations are going between Klitschko and Povektin?

D$
  (12:26 PM)

Nothing and I dont think they are legitimately talking yet.

Santana (Illinois)

Dan, a big fan here, do you think that Cotto over trained for the Trout fight! He looked great with Mayweather...your thoughts

D$
  (12:26 PM)

No, I think he got beat by a slicker boxer in a bad matchup for him.

Derek (Toronto)

Why has Chavez taken so long to appear in front of the NSAC? It will be pointless to arrange a May fight if he is suspended more than 8 months.

D$
  (12:27 PM)

No rush. Whenever he is suspended it will retroactive to Sept. 15.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, do you think Adrien Broner will fight Yuriorkis Gamboa in 2013?

D$
  (12:27 PM)

No.

D$
  (12:28 PM)

Check out today's prospect of the year story: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8784628/david-price

Andy (St Neots, UK)

Dan, happy new year to you and your family. I love that you have chosen David Price as 2012 prospect of the year. I hope he goes on to big things, seams like a nice guy.

D$
  (12:28 PM)

David is a very nice guy based on my interaction with him.

James (Windsor Canada )

Do you have any idea when tickets go on sale for kell brook vs Alexander?

D$
  (12:30 PM)

Not sure, has not been announced.

Michael C (Houston)

I know its been out for a while but I'm halfway through "Unforgivable Blackness" about Jack Johnson. Great read, highly recommended to all the freaks out there.

D$
  (12:30 PM)

Is great and the docu is also fabulous. Highly reccomended.

Leonardo (Bergen, Norway)

Dan, which of your Prospect of the Year picks has best lived up to his potential?

D$
  (12:32 PM)

There are plenty. I'd say Miguel Cotto did prety well for himself. Same with Jermain Taylor. I think something like 8 of the 13 prospects of the year I have picked have won world titles and a couple of them the jury is still out on.

Joe (PA)

Do you think the long layoff will hurt Mayweather if he fights Guerrero?

D$
  (12:32 PM)

Floyd has had several long layoffs and never had a problem, so no reason to suspect it will.

marc (seattle)

dan, out of all the fights you've attended which rivarly did you see as the most bitter??

D$
  (12:33 PM)

Morales and Barrera hate each other and you could tell they weren't playing.

Joe B. (Pittsburgh)

The best prospect of the year was clearly Joel Julio in 2005....anything new with him?

D$
  (12:33 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

I'm booked to attend Garcia/Judah on Feb. 9th, and I'm strongly considering booking tix to go to Broner's fight the next week. Could be a freakish kinda month.

D$
  (12:34 PM)

Nice. #FightFreaks

T.Lew (L.e.s, Nyc)

Zab Judah has his fire burning at an all time high, thanks in part by the Garcia's, mainly Angel. Fate will be Super laying Swift down Swiftly. Less than 4rounds.

D$
  (12:35 PM)

I dont think Garcia will knock Zab out that quickly. :)

craig (houston)

Dan, looking at your prospects of the year since 2000, who has disappointed you most?

D$
  (12:35 PM)

Bojado and the Love Child.

David (Texas)

Do you think Canelo is ready for Mayweather? It will be a huge event but can he compete?

D$
  (12:35 PM)

He is what he is and ready as he will ever be.

Joydeep (Philippines)

Hi Dan. You really think Roy Jones won that first fight against Tarver? He looked terrible in my opinion.

D$
  (12:37 PM)

He look like crap but still won in my view.

Jose (SF, CA)

Dan, Congrats on your BWAA nomination! The Good Guy award should be renamed the Nick Charles Award.

D$
  (12:37 PM)

Thanks. He's talking about this blog: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/2700/bwaa-awards-ballot-set

Charles (Santa Monica, CA)

With the Broner fight squashed who is next for Ricky Burns?

D$
  (12:39 PM)

No idea, but from what I am told Burns/Warren radically priced themselves out of the fight by seeking a seven-figure payday, which is lunacy.

Dave (St. Louis)

Dan your picks are completely off. Marquez should have been fighter of the year. Love you fail to mention that Donaire didn't fight Rigondeaux or Mares. #Pathetic

D$
  (12:39 PM)

The morons are out!

Geoff (Burlington, ON)

What's next for Steve Cunnigham? He looked good against Adamek, but I don't see him able to handle the bigger heavyweights.

D$
  (12:40 PM)

Way to early to say.

Rude (LA) [via mobile]

Hey Dan, one thing I really hoped ken hershman would do in his first year at hbo is bring the old music back, that music would pump me up before the telecast, I even have it as a ringtone, get with ken and tell him do all the freaks a favor and bring it back for 2013.

D$
  (12:40 PM)

I'm with you. The new music is a bastardized version of the old and I hate it.

Andy (St Neots, UK)

Dan, was Tyson Fury considered for the Super 20? Unlike Davis Price he appears to be a clown.

D$
  (12:40 PM)

No, because Fury is already a top contender.

Sportsnation (Everywhere)

What the hell we were thinking with Robert Guerrero as fighter of the year?

D$
  (12:43 PM)

No idea. He had an excellent year but not even close to being deserving of actually winning in my view.

Peter (Ithaca)

How about Pavlik vs. Golovkin later this year?

D$
  (12:43 PM)

Bring it on.

Chris (Overland Park, KS)

One punch doesn't make JMM fighter of the year.

Haris Syed Abbasi (Edison, NJ)

Dan whats next for Keith Thurman? Does he step up in competition?

D$
  (12:43 PM)

He fights March 9 on HBO (shocking, right?) on the BHop undercard. He does not have an opponent. I assume he will fight another guy with no chance because Al Haymon says so.

Joe (Vancouver )

What do you think of Vyacheslav Glazkov? Is he a potential top heavyweight contender?

D$
  (12:44 PM)

He's interesting and another of what is suddenly becoming a nice group of interesting up and coming heavyweights that also includes Price, Fury, Wilder, Pulev, Jennings and others.

P71 (Hartford)

Who do you like in Soto-Karass-Aydin?

D$
  (12:44 PM)

Aydin.

Paul Costellano (Brooklyn)

Hey. Why don't you do your Twitter followers a favor and GIVE IT A REST with the stupid Sheik jokes, or any of your terrible attempts at humor. You are a sharp writer with a gift for words, but you are NOT a comedian, so cut it out.

D$
  (12:45 PM)

You Jabroni, not the real. You worse than the Hulk Hogan.

Sean Mc (Ireland)

Will Golden Boy bring Anthony Ogogo to the states to start his pro career or keep him in Britain?

D$
  (12:45 PM)

They have not said but I assume he will fight in both places. Golden Boy intends to promote in the UK and he will be part of that effort I am sure.

Michael [via mobile]

How about Golovkin Cesar Chavez Jr?

D$
  (12:46 PM)

What do you have against Chavez?

darryl p (indianapolis)

wolud it be a upset if judah beats garcia?

D$
  (12:46 PM)

To most people, yes. Not a huge one, but an upset.

Anthony (Cincinnati)

Dan, would you say it was a down year for FOY candidates? You either had great fighters fighting 1 meaningful fight (Ward, Marquez, and Martinez) or great fighters fighting a bunch of okay contenders (Donaire and Frosch). I agree with the Donaire pick mainly because he is doing the things we want our boxers to do by 1) fighting often and 2) agreeing to blood testing. No slam dunk, though in a tough year.

D$
  (12:48 PM)

First off, Froch fought twice -- a huge win against Bute and then a lesser fight. Not a "bunch of OK contenders." That said, this was not a great year for fight of the year candidates. There were a lot of good fights but nothing on the absolutely epic level.

darryl p (indianapolis)

who is gavin rees?

D$
  (12:49 PM)

A former 140-pound world titleholder who dropped down to 135 a while ago and won the European title. He's a legit lightweight contender.

Jorge Linares (Tokyo, Japan)

Will I get a title fight in 2013?

D$
  (12:49 PM)

Why would you?

Tguns (Bklyn)

Salita v Camacho? Seriously?

D$
  (12:50 PM)

Yup, probably Showtime Extreme coverage of the fight. Local rivalry with a Puerto Rican vs. a Jew. Wont be a very good fight in the ring but they'll hype it up.

Michael [via mobile]

Word is James Kirkland has been accepted in a post graduate program at the Wink Wright school of boxing...

D$
  (12:51 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Cody (USA)

Dan Manuel Marquez,Can you name some boxers who was knocked out cold and was able to recover and came back strong? Do you think Pacquiao will never be the same?

D$
  (12:52 PM)

Duran came back and won big fights after being knocked out cold by Hearns. Lennox had some of his biggest wins after McCall knocked him out (although not cold) and he also had big wins after Rahman did the same.

Tim (Texas)

Do you think all of HBO's negative coverage of marquez on PEDs was fair? They didnt't do it when pacman was claiming up weight divisions like he was on a ladder...

D$
  (12:53 PM)

Pacquiao's strength coach was not a guy who dealt steroids and then ratted so the government wouldn't send him to prison, so, yes, it was fair.

D$
  (12:54 PM)

Make sure to check out the round of the year story: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8780439/sergio-martinez-julio-cesar-chavez-jr

D$
  (12:54 PM)

And the KO of the year story: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8780179/juan-manuel-marquez-manny-pacquiao

D$
  (12:54 PM)

And the fighter of the year story: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8772226/nonito-donaire

Luiz (Bronx)

Whatever happened to Prospect of Year Omar Henry?

D$
  (12:55 PM)

He was never prospect of the year. He decided he wanted to try to be a celebrity rather than fight.

Mike (DC)

Considering what was available. Broner -Rees is not a bad fight. Not broners fault 135 is a wasteland and burns ducked him

D$
  (12:55 PM)

Totally agree.

Orlando ((Los Angeles))

Did you consider Wladimir Klitschko at all for fighter of the year? He had three impressive wins.

D$
  (12:56 PM)

No. He had three wins but he had woeful opposition. Not his fault, but Mormeck was a hot mess, Thompson had already been drilled by him and Wach never deserved the fight in the first place.

brian (ca)

I've heard news organizations write obituaries for people who are alive just in case they pass. Do you have any written for boxing people who are still alive? Ali?

D$
  (12:56 PM)

That is true. It's called being prepared.

Tom (Pittsburgh)

Have you been watching Jim Rome's show on showtime? I think it's been pretty good overall. Considering the wide range of topics he has to cover I think he's given boxing a pretty fair shake and some decent exposure.

D$
  (1:00 PM)

I saw part of this week's show and the interview with Tyson was excellent and funny as hell. Showtime has not done a good job letting the media know what will be on the episides, at least as far as the boxing media goes, so Tyson's appearance was a surprise to me. I only saw it because I happened to flip the channel and catch it.

Cowboy Tex (Visalia, Ca.)

By the way, you help keep boxing as thriving sport with your great journalism.

D$
  (1:01 PM)

Thanks.

Gino (New York)

DAN, one of the unheralded stories of 2012 was the rise of the HW prospects. Kudos to your story on Price today. Don't look now, but the HW division might be one to watch in the coming years.

D$
  (1:01 PM)

I agree.

Nick (DE)

DTM, Which guys you will be keeping an eye on early in 2013 as possible prospect of year material?

D$
  (1:01 PM)

Magdaleno.

Anthony (Cincinnati)

A little confusion with the rankings: Why is Cunningham not listed among the heavyweights when he out-boxed Adamek #5?

D$
  (1:03 PM)

Cunningham has 2 heavyweight fights, one win over a journeyman and the a controversial loss. Not enough to be top 10. Adamek has real resume at heavyweight.

darryl p (indianapolis)

just read ur blog on kayode move to heavyweight...do u think he makes any noise in the division?

D$
  (1:05 PM)

None.

Joydeep (Philippines )

No surprise but your article on knockout of the year made news in the philippines. I predict you're also going to name pacquiao vs marquez IV Fight of the Year but December 8th 2012 will definitely be a day everyone here will forget lol

D$
  (1:07 PM)

LOL.

Lucas (Danbury, CT)

Any more details on why Lundy is pulling out? A win against Mathesse would put him back in contention and big $$ fights.

D$
  (1:09 PM)

He didnt pull out but he has a beef with his promoter over a contract so while they are squabbling, Golden Boy is moving on.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Re-watched Mayweather/Cotto the other day. Feels strange hearing Manny call the fight, like he was just with us yesterday.

D$
  (1:09 PM)

I had the same feeling when I was re-watching it as well.

Aaron (MI)

What is to blame for Andre Dirrell's lack of activity? Promoter problems, injury, or Team Dirrell? So many good names for him to fight in that division.. His prime years are wasting.

D$
  (1:09 PM)

No idea and, frankly, dont really care.

Charles (DFW)

With Ward-Pavlik being cancelled, is there any chance we might finally see Pavlik-Abraham? I know it doesn't mean as much now as it would have 5 years ago, but I'd still be intrigued.

D$
  (1:10 PM)

I agree and I suggested that in the video I did on the Ward injury: http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=8783362

Jeff (USA)

Has former lineal Light Heavyweight champion Zsolt Erdei retired?

D$
  (1:11 PM)

Not officially as far as I know.

John (D.C.)

DTM, did you see Wladimir on Jim Rome. I thought he was so classy, it's amazing how intelligent he is. I can't wait to see him give Povetkin an epic beating

D$
  (1:12 PM)

Didnt see it. Didnt know he'd be on and I am not a Rome fan, so I would never watch unless I knew there was some boxing content.

alex (northridge)

Dan, in your opinion, did the number of morons increase or decline this year compared to last year?

D$
  (1:12 PM)

Increased.

Jackson (IA)

Dan...you had to do it, didn't you? Naming a british fighter prospect of the year? As if these Brits weren't overly crazy and completely irrational about their fighters already...anyway, happy new year to you and yours

D$
  (1:13 PM)

LOL! But I supposedly hate the Brits right?

Mike (DC)

Does Tim Bradley still have an HBO date in q1?

D$
  (1:15 PM)

Likely in March.

Mike (DC)

What happens to Arreola-Stiverne? Any chance Hbo makes it a BAD on 3/2. Think its a fun fight til someone gets drilled!

D$
  (1:15 PM)

Up in the air.

Tommy (Detroit)

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to you and Mrs. DTM from the Freaks!

Brett (Minneapolis)

NBC will do the New Years countdown, skip number 4, scream HAPPY NEW YEAR, wish all the viewers a happy 2016 and abruptly sign off at 12:01am

D$
  (1:16 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Mike (DC)

Any site yet for De Leon-Velez?

D$
  (1:17 PM)

New York, either Apollo or Best Buy Arena on Times Square.

Nick (DE)

Any idea on whether epix will stray from the heavyweight division in 2013... I love seeing the big guys from europe, but there are a good amount of great little fighters too

D$
  (1:18 PM)

I think Epix will certainly look at non-heavyweights. We have done non-heavyweights, like Froch-Bute, Sturm-Macklin, a Cleverly fight, Groves-DeGale.

Matt (Virginia)

has the NSAC ever caught anyone with their drug tests? (Aside from marijuana)

D$
  (1:19 PM)

Yes, including Fernando Vargas after the Oscar fight. They've popped several guys.

Mike (Queens)

I thought B-Hop was fighting on Showtime. What happened to have his fight move to HBO?

D$
  (1:20 PM)

BHop has fought on both nets and for this fight, Golden Boy made a deal with HBO.

John (D.C.)

Call this not a good business move, but what do you think DTM? September mexican independance day weekend, Dallas Cowboy Stadium. Martinez/Chavez jr 2 and Pacquiao/Marquez 5 on the same card. Could they sell out the whole stadium?

D$
  (1:21 PM)

I think it's stupid business. Both fights would do monster gates and PPVs on their own. Why put them together? Couldnt afford it anyway with the amount of money it would take to make both fights. Pure fantasy but not remotely realistic.

Stephen (Tulsa)

Hershman has had a year with HBO, is it time for the network to make some improvements. Showtime got even better after he left.

D$
  (1:22 PM)

I see that opinion from a lot of people in my queue over the past few months.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Who would've thought that Bernard Hopkins would outlast Larry Merchant on HBO!

D$
  (1:23 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Tim (Philly)

Is Manny still trying to fight in April?

D$
  (1:24 PM)

No, he wont be back until the fall at the earliest.

Charles (DFW)

Hypothetical matchup, who do you think wins between Evander Holyfield and Floyd Patterson, at basically cruiserweight?

D$
  (1:26 PM)

Wow, Holyfield all day long.

Craig D. (Philly)

Freak, thanks for another superb year of boxing coverage! As for 2013 Let's get it on!

D$
  (1:27 PM)

Thanks.

Matt (Virginia)

I'm in VA going to the MSG show in January....have you taken the train to NY from DC before?

D$
  (1:28 PM)

All the time, probably made the trip 10 times in 2012. I will do it again for that card in January.

Hans (Hamburg)

Edmund Gerber vs. Kingpin Johnson? Buy or Sell?

D$
  (1:28 PM)

Is throw up an option?

John (Chicago)

Bold prediction for 2013: Top Rank and Golden Boy still won't work together.

D$
  (1:29 PM)

That is not very bold. It's about as bold as predicting that the sun will rise.

Stephen (Tulsa)

ESPN needs a boxing pickem league. the freaks would come out in full force every week

D$
  (1:29 PM)

Not a bad idea.

Aaron (MI)

Will Manny have enough money to last until Fall 2013?

D$
  (1:29 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

I know Showtimes boxing budget has expanded in the last year, but do you know if theyre close to the same budget as HBO, and could they maybe even surpass HBO in the next year or 2?

D$
  (1:31 PM)

I think the budgets are on par right now.

Albert (Denver)

Another bold prediction for 2013: Floyd will say something ridiculous or announce something of minor importance the week that Manny fights.

Walter (Indiana)

any news on Mares vs Donaire?

D$
  (1:33 PM)

There is no news. There is no fight.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Is it true that Wladimir K. is dating Taylor Swift now?

D$
  (1:34 PM)

I have no idea but IF that was true it would mean me and my 9-year-old niece would have something very serious to discuss.

Aaron (Hartford)

Tony Grano is rated the #6 heavyweight in the WBC...good lord .....

D$
  (1:36 PM)

#wbcisdisgusting

Melvin (NYC)

You have Carl Froch ahead Guerrero in your pound for pound ratings. He's fought most of his fights in the UK and has only fought in one weight class. Guerrero has won titles in many divisions. Do you see Guerrero moving up if he continues to dominate?

D$
  (1:37 PM)

How many divisions you fight is not a major factor in p4p as far as I am concerned. Froch has beat way more top quality guys than Guerrero.

Oscar (Chicago)

How surprised would you be at a Mayweather - Martinez fight in 2013? Would that win be on the same scale of a Roy Jones Jr Heavyweight victory over Ruiz for Floyd?

Very. It aint happening. Sergio will fight twice in 2013. April 27 in Argentina vs Murray and if he wins, probably fall in a rematch with Junior.

Peter (Ithaca)

Have you ever met Jake La Motta? There was a little interview with him in Esquire last month. He seems like an interesting guy.

D$
  (1:41 PM)

I have and he is super cool. First time I met him, he came into a restaurant in NYC where I was having drinks with a bunch of boxing guys. He knew some of the people I was with and came over and used the line I am sure he has used a million times. I will never forget it -- he was wearing a cowboy hat and he took off his hat, bowed his head and said, "Hi, I'm Robert DeNiro." Absolutely epic.

Dieter (From Sprockets)

Dan, I'm surprised and hurt that my chat debut (and subsequent regular appearances thereafter) in 2012 didn't make any of your end-of-year lists. Even so, I'll give you the honors as we close out 2012...

D$
  (1:42 PM)

So is it time?????????

Ace (Sactown)

"Pacquiao's strength coach was not a guy who dealt steroids and then ratted so the government wouldn't send him to prison, so, yes, it was fair." ...OK , so explain Nonito then. Prasing him for taking test and passing them? Isnt that what Conte always did? double standard is not cool and its very transparent. HBO guy gets KTFO and they start craying PED's. Cmon son

D$
  (1:43 PM)

Donaire is blood and urine tested at any moment 24/7/365. Nobody else is.

Dieter (From Sprockets)

It is time. Call the ball!

D$
  (1:44 PM)

NOW is when we dance!

Bryan (PA)

DTM, Junior Dos Santos (UFC HW champ) thinks he could hang with the Klitschko brothers, your thoughts on this???

D$
  (1:45 PM)

If hang means go to sleep in violent fashion, then yes, he can hang.

Ryan (Chitown)

Dan Obviously you are a exceptional Boxing writer and insider, however, my problem with you is you underestimate to many great fighters. A prime example is Chavez Jr. He will give GGG a great fight. Am I wrong?

D$
  (1:47 PM)

Yes, you are wrong.

darryl p (indianapolis)

will we get a cunnigham vs adamek 3?..is it getting talked about?

D$
  (1:48 PM)

Maybe down the road but not now. Adamek will have a title eliminator with Pulev for the right to be the IBF mandatory.

Haris Syed Abbasi (Edison, NJ)

Dan, does Showtime plan on having another tournament just like they did with the Super 6?

D$
  (1:49 PM)

No.

Horn (Vegas)

I just noticed the D$. Does this confirm your alliance with The Money Team?

D$
  (1:51 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

carnell (DC)

What happened with the proposed Jermaine Taylor vs Kid Chocolate fight? Seems like the quickest way to get JT his $1 Million pay and more exposure for Kid Chocolate

D$
  (1:52 PM)

Somebody realized it wasnt worth Taylor going to sleep again.

Julio (Dallas)

Dan I know this probably ain't your department but the new espn iPhone/iPad application does not allow you to follow boxing like the old one did . Can you let them know

D$
  (1:52 PM)

I have been inundated with stuff about that on Twitter and passed it along and was told a boxing app will be added. When, I dont know.

Michael C (Houston)

Meeting DTM at the Donaire/Arce weigh-in - cool. Getting JCC Sr's autograph - very cool. Arce not giving much heads up before dropping trou to step on the scale - NOT COOL.

D$
  (1:53 PM)

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a good time in Houston.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, if you'll allow it, I just want to say something to my boxing brethren who chose not to attend Pacquiao vs. Marquez 4 with me, because they were suffering from "consumer fatigue". HAAAA!

Sean Mc (Ireland)

When was the last time (before Price) the prospect of the year was a heavyweight?

D$
  (1:55 PM)

Look at the list in the story of past winners. Do I need to hold the water bottle for you drink out of also?

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

You said you are approaching 3,000 posters. What was poster number 1?

D$
  (1:56 PM)

That's a good question. I honestly do not know what my first boxing poster was. Damn, I have NO idea.

Anthony (Iowa)

Please explain the "now is when we dance" jokes

D$
  (1:57 PM)

Freaks?

Matt (Virginia)

Better back hair.....Nicolay Valuev or George "The Animal" Steele? Same question for better chest hair.

D$
  (1:57 PM)

These are my readers.

RJ (OH)

Dan, I know you created the list in alphabetical order, but how legitimate of a candidate was Jesse Magdaleno for your prospect of the year award?

D$
  (1:57 PM)

Very legit but I felt it was year too early.

Joe (Las Vegas)

Carlos Dantana, I love the recent discussions regarding HBO and Showtime. As the two biggest outlets for boxing, they are critical to the sport and I love that they are evolving and constantly getting better. HBO does a better job, mostly due to Jim Lampley. But I LOVE that Showtime now opens the telecasts from a set with Brian K. Gives the show more of an 'event' feel. Kudos to Showtime - and I hope they know fans notice how much better they're getting.

Kristian (Wall Street, NY)

Would you consider W. Klitschko a top 10 heavyweight of all-time?

D$
  (1:58 PM)

At this point yes, but his career is not over.

D$
  (2:01 PM)

With FNF starting next week, my latest blog: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/2719/gonzalez-looks-to-rebound-on-fnf

Felix Tito Trinidad, Amazon Jungle [via mobile]

I always wanted to see a fight between Tyson vs David Tua but the fight never happened. I Also wanted to see a j.m Marquez vs erik morales but Also never happened. Do you know if any of These 22 fights was ever discussed or propossed?

D$
  (2:02 PM)

Im with you -- always wanted to see both. Dont think Tyson-Tua was every really discussed but Morales-Marquez was very seriusly discussed more than once, most recently in the past year.

Vic G (San Antonio)

Dan, when i make it on hbo will u walk with me to the ring?

D$
  (2:02 PM)

I'll consider it.

Barry (Rack City)

al gilbert (DFW, Texas)

Dan great job with your coverage of boxing. But there is one problem, well two. You have Adrien Broner ranked #19 in your "Pound 4 Pound". Yes, the guy is young, but very gifted/skilled. He is definitely definitely ALOT higher than #19, he is a top 5 talent. Then, you don't have Gary Russell Jr. in your top #20. Come' on Dan.

D$
  (2:04 PM)

He hasnt earned that high of placement in MY view.

Joseph Key (Cullman, AL)

What do you make of heavyweight Deontay Wilder?

D$
  (2:05 PM)

I can make a hat, I can make a broach, I can make a pterodactyl.

Mike (DC)

Question of 2013, will the watson twins walk with Quillin or Guerrero on 2/9?! Or will it be Watson v. Watson?

D$
  (2:06 PM)

My head is going to explode.

Charles (DFW)

Airplane jokes, Dan? Really?

D$
  (2:07 PM)

Glad somebody got it.

Jeremy Foley O' Connell (Kerry, Ireland)

Rofl @ Broner in top 5 p4p and Gary Russell in top 20...you realize you have to actually achieve something first, dont you Al?

Chance (Omaha, NE)

Dan, do you think it's a negative for Gary Russell Jr. to show up on your prospects list a year after getting the top honor? How often has that happened with your winners?

D$
  (2:07 PM)

This is the first time.

Charles (DFW)

I was going to say Joseph must have been standing in the White Zone. Totally epic.

Mike (DC)

They should make the Watson Dilemma a prop bet in Vegas!

D$
  (2:08 PM)

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aaron (MI)

Any word on Amir Khans possible next opponent?

D$
  (2:12 PM)

Nothing definite, but Josesito Lopez has been mentioned for April.

Michael [via mobile]

Happy New Year. May the sweet science be in for an epic year

D$
  (2:13 PM)

OK, Fight Freaks, thanks for another great year of chat. This was No. 54 of the year. Hope you check out all the award winner stories. Saturday is the fight of the year piece. Hope you all have a great New Years! Peace.
