Hey guys, we'll get rolling in a sec.
Anyone making noise in practice. I seen Trevor Knight and Alex Ross were playing well, anyone else?
We've heard a lot about DT Jordan Wade, too.
Jake you are as familiar with the OU program as any. What does the QB situation look like in Norman heading into next year. I keep hearing Trevor Knight is really wowing I have heard Kendall Thompson is high up on the depth chart. Add in Blake Bell. I have no clue what our offense is going to look like next year and who will be running it. Can you offer some insight?
To me, the job is Blake Bell's to lose. But according to several people I've talked to close to the program, if anyone is up to the task of unseating him, it might be Knight. In a story last week, I quoted several first-team defenders raving about how good he's been as the scout-team QB this year. Thompson has great athleticism and is a hard worker... but if I had to handicap the QB derby, I'd go 1) Bell, 2) Knight, 3) Kendal
Mr. Trotter..good afternoon!!! Any chance to the rumors that Norvell an option as OC at either Wisconsin or A&M??? And if so..does that mean Mangino or Long returns???
Norvell wants to be a playcaller, and if anyone offered him that opportunity, he'd take a hard look. It's possible Stoops would bring back one of those guys, but Stoops would need a strong WR coach, given how much the offense relies on them. Neither Mangino nor Long are WR coaches.
how come everybody wants to talk about how great bamas O played and not the fact that georgia loaded with "NFL" talent gave up 350 rush yds. But if it were OU everyone would be talking about how bad our D is and not how great the Other teams offense played.
I think it's a conspiracy...
Any good recruiting news?
Last week wasn't good enough?
Is Tee Shepherd a Sooner? Didn't see him on the list of commits on the recruiting page?
As of today, he is not a Sooner. Still some obstacles he would have to clear to get to Norman. Not sure if it happens.
If TJeff stays which I highly doubt, you think he'll be the 1st Saftey off the board?
You talking about the '14 draft? Heck, he could be the first safety off the board this year, though, too. Probably going to be either him or Elam of Florida.
If Gundy leaves us do we go back to little brother status?
Gundy isn't leaving. He would have taken the Tenn job if he were angling to leave.
Any big recruits we really have a chance with?
Treadwell, the No. 1 WR in America.
Any news on Jalen Saunders for the Cotton Bowl? Stacy Mcgee?
Bob Stoops has been mum on both. Would be shocked if McGee played. Hard to see Saunders playing either with charges pending. We'll probably know this weekend when the team arrives in Dallas.
Hearing Stills and Millard are going to declare for the NFL draft. I think Millard is the best player on the team, but declaring early? Kind of weird no?
Be careful with some of those NFL draft sites. They aren't 100 percent accurate with these kind of reports. That said, in the last two weeks I had been hearing that Millard was going to give the draft a hard look. The thing with Millard is, he's not going to improve his stock by staying -- and a fullback only has so many hits in his body... why not get paid for taking some of those hits? That's probably his thinking.
As happy as I am that this will be LJ's last game in an OU uniform; I sincerely hope he goes out like a champ. He deserves it. Any indication how his prep is going so far and a guess at how he will perform in the Cotton Bowl?
It would be a great way for him to go out. The team has been away for Christmas, so it's hard to get an indication of where the team is mentally today. The arrests for sure haven't helped, though.
What is the percent that Stills, Millard, and Jefferson stay for next year to win a championship?
It's more likely that all three leave than all three stay.
Any ideas on why trey metoyer struggled so much this year. Everyone hyped him up in the pre season?
Sometimes it takes true freshman a little longer to adjust. I don't remember anyone talking about Justin Blackmon as a true freshman, and he seems to be doing all right. Give Trey some time. I still think he'll be a very productive player before his career is done.
So from what I've been hearing, A&M's D will cause the OU offense fits... But with Kingsbury gone, and Manziel dealing with all the publicity of winning the Heisman; can the OU defense use that to their advantage, and be the reason for a Sooner victory?
If I am an A&M fan, I'm concerned about the extended awards circuit that Manziel has taken. Before Cam Newton, there was a track record of Heisman winners not playing well in their bowl game for that reason. Plus, I can tell you that the OU defenders will be motivated to knock Manziel down a peg or two.
AD needs 208 to pass Dickerson, though a long shot he is the guy to do it. If he does, is he in the top 10 RBs of all time?
If he doesn't, he still might be.
After the season is over there are four soon to be Seniors who might enter the deaft early. Any insight to which one's might make the jump and which ones might stick around for another year?
If I had to rank them from most likely to least likely: 1. Jefferson, 2. Stills, 3. Millard, 4. Colvin.
Everybodys freakin out about the D-Line next year, any redshirts or underclassman not in the current rotation that you've heard about doing well this year?
There have been some positive reports on Jordan Wade, which is a good sign considering he's going to have to help Phillips and potentially Quincy Russell.
If Oklahoma defeats A&M on January 4th will it be fair to say we met the expectations for this season?
Yeah, I think that's fair. Nobody predicted before the year that this team would win the national title. So you can't call the season disappointing.
What is the status on Jalen Saunders for the Cotton Bowl? Stacy McGee?
Do the Sooners have anything up their sleeves to disrupt Johnny Manziel?
I hear they might use this position some used to refer to as a "linebacker." I cannot confirm though.
Nexts years DTs...Jordan Philips,Quincy Russell, and Jordan Wade with the 4th spot TBD?
I think that's fair. The fourth is probably Marquis Anderson if he ever gets out of the doghouse.
Jake, I know it's a long shot, but how much would it help OU's team next year if some or all the juniors considering the NFL stayed for another year? Would they be championship worthy?
I wouldn't consider them a title favorite. But if all four left, there would be some major holes (DB, FB) that would have to be filled on top of other question marks like defensive line. The Sooners are better, maybe significantly, with those guys in 2013 than they are without them.
Why is it that a&m's move to the sec is an instant validation for their defense? Every cotton bowl preview I have seen is giving the defensive edge to a
That's probably because A&M has the better defense.
Why would Millard consider leaving early? Does he see himself as a featured back in the NFL? A fullback leaving early makes no sense. The best fullback in CFB history (Tebow) didn't even leave early...
If makes sense if you look at the argument that a FB has only limited years playing football. If he leaves this year, that's one more year he would have playing while getting paid. Plus, Millard's stock is never going to be higher than it is today.
what r the chances alex ross plays next year, and is he as good as advertised?
I really like Ross' potential. He's runs a little upright, but so did Allen Patrick. Ross has a chance to be the third back behind Williams and Clay.
Any news on Justin Manning?Any chance we steal him from texas a&m?
Maybe OU fans can kidnap him during the Cotton Bowl...
Regardless of who the starter is, which scenario is more likely to happen. 1. The starter plays in a very similar system only has the ability to scramble and the backup (Knight/Thompson/Bell) is brought in as the "Belldozer"/"Knight Rider"/Other. 2. The offense switches gears and runs more read option, QB draws, and other wrinkles with the starting QB and possibly still uses the backup for the "wildcat" formation.
I know OU's recruiting has been questioned recently, but how big an impact do you think those new athletic dorms will make for recruiting? They are pretty impressive compared to the old Bud Wilkinson housing.
Stoops thinks they're going to make a significant impact. He says that was the one weakness they had in recruiting to their facilities. I have no reason to disagree with him.
i keep hearing a lot of buzz about Lane Johnson being the sooner that gets picked first, what r your thoughts abt that ?
Very possible. You can teach run blocking technique. You can really teach Lane's athleticism, footwork, instincts, which are all off the charts. Wouldn't surprise me if he ran a 4.8 in the combine. Landry is probably the favorite to be the first Sooner taken. But Lane is right there, too.
If you could guess, how many recruits will we sign? How many big names? do you think we sign Treadwell, Baker? Steal any more?
Depends on how many guys declare for the draft, and whether there are any defections off the roster (there's always a couple). I see OU going after 7-8-9 more guys.
Where are you hearing Landry Jones is likely to be taken in draft, 2nd round?
Late first, early second.
Any news on Treadwell or Adrian Baker?
Treadwell is still scheduled to visit Ok State after the new year. Both Treadwell and Baker said they enjoyed their visits to Norman, so we'll see. OU has a solid shot at both.
What was your favorite Christmas present Jake?
Wife got me an iPad.
White or Crimson jerseys in the Cotton Bowl????
Will Millard get a necessary amount of touches in the Cotton Bowl? Mike and Bob both have expressed that he is undoubtedly the best football player on the team. Will we see more of him in the bowl game and into next year. He seems like the type that if given 20 touches a game could yield very high rewards.
Good things happen every time Millard touches the ball. I've given up expecting him to get anything more than 6-7 touches a game, though.
Jake, are you hearing any buzz about any athletic construction projects in the near future? Weight room, press box, etc...?
Why can't the OU men's basketball team shoot? Do they practice shooting? Is there something about the OU uniform that when they put it on it disrupts their shooting motion? Tell them they can't win if they can't score. They are very frustrating to watch..
Really bad loss to Stephen F. Austin. OU was lucky to beat ORU, NW St, too. Team has a ways to go before being considered a tourney squad.
do you think AD breaks the record sunday?
No, I think he comes up a little short. 208 is asking a lot.
What's the current status of DT Stacy Mcgee- who was arrested earlier for suspicion of DUI? Will he be playing in the Cotton Bowl?
Nothing official from OU, but I doubt it.
Since Brennan Clay is staying, any chance that Stills and Jefferson stay in Norman to have one last hoorah as the "cali trio"?
Both Stills and Jefferson have said breaking up the Trio would have no effect on their decision. So sentimentality is not going to have its day.
Any buzz about uniform changes???? Not talking about all the options the Pokes/Oregon has, but any additions??? A white helmet with Crimson OU on the side would look sweet on the road.
No buzz. Joe C seems pretty set against it. I think white helmets with a crimson "OU" at home would be a pretty cool, but subtle alternate.
Is Damien Williams completly healed? How about our rag tag OLine, who doesn't get the respect they deserve?
Yeah, Williams is getting there. Stoops said he's been practicing without a limp for the first time since the Notre Dame game. OT Daryl Williams is out for the bowl game, but the rest of the o-line should be as healthy as they've been since the beginning of the season (Irwin ankle, Shead back and ankle, Lane ankle).
O-line the best overall position group next season?
The WRs and RBs will be good again, but yeah, on paper, the OL should be stout.
I always get awesome gifts in my stocking, did you get anything great in your stocking?
Too old for a stocking, unfortunately.
Thinking back to that question about Norvell going to A&M. Isn't that scenario about 100 times worse than any single recruit being lost. He's a phenomenal recruiter and I think a guiding influence while Josh still figures this out. Has there been any rumblings about Norvell being considered for the job?
Nothing but conjecture at this point, and yes, that would be a huge loss. Norvell has been killing it on the recruiting trail, and he assembled one of the best WR units in school history this year (even if 2 of them were transfers).
Speaking of the O-line...Evans coming back????
Yes, and James Patton said last week that Tyler might be able to take some part in spring drills.
Does OU make a run at the title in the next 2-3 years?
I don't see them making one next year... beyond that, it's impossible to predict.
Any chance we get back in with Notre Dame commit Greg Bryant?
Any news on Matt Dimon? Texas going to steal our recruit?
They have to offer him first
Jake, im 34 and I still get a stocking, your never too old for a stocking!
I'll keep that in mind.
What happen with Greg Bryant did we have a mutually partway?
No, he de-committed.
Hey Jake, did you get my nickname recommendation for Millard? It's 'JumpTruck'... obviously stemming from "the play" he made this year. Think about it. JumpTruck and Belldozer in the backfield... doin' work!!
Not bad, but hard to see it sticking like the "belldozer."
who would OU's first call be to for the next HC whenever Bob retires?
Great question... Heupel and Mike Stoops have to have that in the back of their minds. Sure both would love to have the job. Depends when Bob retires, and who's out there.
I know that next year the depth chart for running back goes 1. Williams 2. Clay 3. Ross. But what about Keith Ford any chance he makes an instant impact and gets some playing time?
Cale Gundy doesn't like to redshirt his backs, so it's possible. Would probably depend where Ross and David Smith were, and whether they felt like Ford could be the No. 1 back in 2014.
Were you joking about DGB?
Ha, I was.
What one recruit does Bob Stoops want? What one recruit does Mike Stoops want?
Sure Bob would love to have Treadwell... Mike really would like to have Baker. He values CBs as much as anyone.
So..no talk about Finch with the backs. Is he just a non-factor now??? What did he do???
Non-factor, and who knows.
I would love for OU to get a young DC from an SEC school. Think Kirby Smart would take the OU job if offered?
Surprising that Smart doesn't have a head job already. Maybe he's waiting for the right one...
With the highest average attendance in history when do you believe Oklahoma Memorial stadium will be expanded and how?
Don't think the demand warrants it. Yes, the stadium is packed for Notre Dame, OSU. But you can get tickets below face value at about any other home game. Not sure OU could consistently fill a 100,000 seat stadium.
You'd think Finch would be a great guy in the back field no better than our line run blocks. He has the most potential to make something out of nothing..
You would think...
When Stoops does retire I would love them to go after John Gruden (wont happen). Any chance Sumlin makes a full circle back to OU? That would make for a great story
Sumlin has a pretty good thing going in College Station. Hard to see him ever leaving that job.
With all the guys thinking of coming out early its kind of an indictment of the OU program in general the last few years. Guys thinking they are better than they are. I mean really who comes out early to get drafted in the middle rounds. There is a reality problem in Norman right now..
Happens everywhere. Happened at OU before, too. Remember 2007? Malcolm Kelly, Curtis Lofton, Reggie Smith all left early, even though none of them were first rounders. It worked out for Lofton, but not for Kelly or Smith. Guess what happened at OU the next year? The Sooners went to the national title. The OU program is bigger than one player. I wouldn't worry too much about early entrants.
A&M does not equal OU no matter how you do the math..
No, but Sumlin has the Aggies rolling right now. Not sure he would leave that for the risk that comes with taking a job where the expectations are immense like at an Oklahoma.
That's all the time we have for today guys!!! We will return back to monday next week (or do we??) Have a great week...
Yes, we will be back on our regular schedule Monday. Same time, same place. Until then, everyone have a great week.
