We'll get started in a sec... keep sending in your questions/comments.
Is Adrian Peterson the greatest NFL player to come from not only OU but the Big 12 in general?
Lee Roy Selmon has carried that mantle for awhile now. But it's time we start having that conversation. Peterson just put together one of the greatest seasons by an individual in NFL history, and he did it coming off ACL surgery.
Stoops hasn't been a huge fan of the quarterback spy in the past. Given the Sooners' failure to guard scrambling quarterbacks this year (at least on third down), do you think he'll budge this time?
Don't they have to? I mean, the last thing you want is Manziel making huge ad-lib plays out of the pocket.
Gimme some hope. Where does OU have an advantage against A&M? I'm having a hard time finding anything.
I like the way OU's WRs match up against the Texas A&M secondary. The Aggies have not seen a corps like this all season, and have struggled with pass defense at different times. If Landry can stay upright, the Aggies could be on their heels against Saunders, Stills, Brown and Shepard.
Will Mike use LB's in this game, or 6 DB's
I'd be stunned if he didn't use LBs. This isn't Baylor OU is about to face.
I don't understand how Super Mario can smash bricks with his head and hand, but dies when he touches a turtle. I like turtles?
Probably the weirdest comment submitted in this chat's history.
How would you describe Landry Jones carreer by the way BOOMER SOONER!
Underappreciated. He probably ranks 4th in the Stoops Era among OU QBs, but he might be one of the 10 best ever to play in Norman.
I've heard from you about Trevor Knight and read more on-line at the Daily Oklahoman. What real chance do you give Knight to supplant Blake Bell at the QB position? Is this kid playing that well?
As I've said before, the job is Bell's to lose. But if anyone is up to the task of supplanting him, it might be Knight. His teammates have raved about him, and several insiders have told me that the staff is quietly pumped about the kid's potential.
How do you think the bell-dozer will do in his first season starting for the sooners?
I expect ups and downs. Bell has a lot of talent, and his ability to run the ball will give defenses fits. But it's going to be an adjustment for him running the offense full time for the first time.
Who with more fantasy points Friday? Bell/Jones or Johnny Football?
Hard to go against Johnny Football, who was a dynamo this season for the 9 people out there that play college fantasy football.
It's hard to beleive that one game will make or break Landry Jones, but the Cotton Bowl seems to be that game.
Nah, I don't believe that. People have pretty much made up their mind about him one way or the other. This game will just leave a little aftertaste, good or bad.
Stoops has had a long friendly relationship with Nick Saban. Do you think he took a few minutes to make a phone call to his old friend for some insight into stopping A&M.While Bama got gashed early (LSU letdown?), they made some really nice adjustments and held A
That wouldn't surprise me. Especially since Stoops could reciprocate with thoughts on Alabama's bowl opponent, too.
Mikey employ a spy like Julian Wilson for Johnny? Does Mikey play some zone?
OU tried Wilson on Tavon Austin and it was a disaster. I know it's a different position, but I would go with Frank Shannon. He's done well when he's been given a chance, and he can also help plug the run, which Wilson cannot.
If OU beats A&M Friday, how do you see it affecting next years preseason rankings and whether or not they will be a Top 5 team?
Whether Millard and Jefferson and Stills and Colvin come back will have a greater impact on OU's 2013 preseason ranking than this game. But either way, I don't see OU being preseason Top 5. Too many questions.
Most disappointing Texas 5 star? Jemarkus or RJ?
McFarland has played a lot more football than RJ has.
With Colvin getting a second round grade do you see him entering the NFL draft? What about TJeff, Stlls and Millard....Who stays, who goes?
I think he's giving it a strong thought, something he probably wasn't anticipating two months ago. I'm betting that Stills and Jefferson leave. Millard is 50-50.
IMO Mike is one of the best DC in the game. It seems at times he was over thinking the game plan this year. You think he will be more basic and let the players make the plays
The defensive coaches have basically admitted to us and to the team that they screwed up by changing up the scheme so dramatically so late in the season. I expect them to get back to basics in this game, which worked pretty well earlier in the year.
Why is recruiting a struggle?
OU is probably going to finish with another Top 10 class. Is that what you call a struggle?
I posed this question on Twitter this morning -- which of the four leaving early would hurt OU most next season? Colvin, Millard, Stills or Jefferson?
Jefferson. Too critical to the defense.
Are you already conceding next years starting QB job to Bell? Will Knight get any kind of fair look in spring ball?
I'm not conceding anything. Bell is the favorite, but Knight will have his chance. Kendal Thompson, too.
Jefferson and Millard. Colvin is a also critical.
If Jefferson and Colvin leave, what is the secondary going to look like next season?
Easily Jefferson. The Defense doesn't have room to get any worse with the way the Big 12 offenses are trending...
Hatari Byrd would probably have to be ready to start as a freshman at safety. Maybe they move Julian Wilson or Gabe Lynn to the other safety, and keep the other at nickel. As for the corners, I guess you're looking at Gary Simon and Cortez Johnson. The last thing you want in the pass-happy Big 12 is a young, inexperienced secondary, but that's what OU could be dealing with next season.
I think Jefferson because we have a deep receiving corps and it seems we get good defensive play out of our corners year in year out but I can't remember when we have had a playmaking safety like him
Yeah, and especially in Mike Stoops' defense, where the scheme revolves around the safeties.
Winning football starts in the trenches. Can we expect any more DT or OL recuits to commit in the near future? Is Joe Powell done at OU, did he make the trip to Cotton Bowl?
Powell is not in Dallas... his days at OU are done. OU still working hard to get more guys in the trenches, but they had a pretty good haul two weeks ago with Russell and company.
St. John is a juco OT that could help, and Russell figures to start alongside Jordan Phillips.
Good to hear on the QB race next year, thanks for the insight. As follow up, if Bell does indeed win the gig do you see a philosophical change with the offensive scheme do to Bell's lack of throwing abilty?
They have to tailor the offense to his skillset. Is OU going to run the QB 25 times a game? No. But the QB run game will be part of the attack.
I think Cotton Bowl is very important for the program. OU needs a big win to get it's swagger back. Agree?
It would help. A loss would invite plenty of offseason negativity despite what's been a pretty solid season.
OU has been underachieving the past 4 years. Call me crazy, but I do not believe in Bob Stoops' ability to win a big game or motivate his players anymore. Am I wrong to think this?
OU has won plenty of big games the last four years. OSU/NEB in 2010; FSU/TX last year; TX/OSU this year. My criticism of the program is that it's been five years since OU was a serious national title contender past October. That's a long time, by OU standards.
Jake...Happy New Year!!! Is Drew Allen even going to get a look??? Maybe transfer??? Haven't heard his name mentioned at all..
I think he ends up transferring. That announcement could come pretty quickly after the bowl game. I doubt he waits until after the spring to make a call.
Losing all four will be big blow, but this is Oklahoma and there are plenty of talented guys ready to step up. J. Wilson will step into a starting role and Sanchez and Simon will plenty of time. I expected Kazz Everett to have a more of an impact, but hopefully he'll take advantage of the opportunity next season to contribute whether Jefferson and Colvin leave or not.
JUCO guys that get beat out by younger players typically have a hard time contributing the following year (Think JR Bryant). Wilson is basically a starter already, so he will be play a big role somewhere. Where is the question. Simon and Sanchez better be ready.
Jake, the Sooners lost 3 starters and a Secondary Coach in Martinez - (Lewis, Lewis, Frank-the Tank) on Def. and Gained a DC/ Secondary coach in M.Stoops. Do you think that his overall philosophy and play calling, or the loss of Lewis , Lewis, and Alexander has had more to do with the giant statistical dip in every defensive category except for Passes deffensed and Passes broken up?
OU's pass defense is much higher ranked than it was last year. The problem has been stopping the run. Sooners really miss Alexander and Lewis on the corner. King is solid, but there aren't really any difference makers up front. And I'm skeptical the dline is better next year.
What about linebacker recruiting? Is Jordan Evans a LB or DE? Any chance at getting Mike Mitchell? Any way Mike Stoops plays a 3-4 Defense?
Evans is probably a DE. That's where they project him now. Mitchell is likely headed to Ohio State. Mike is not a 3-4 guy, though had OU not signed Quincy Russell, they might have had to employ it (joking, of course).
How do you think the Big 12 stacks up to the other major conferences? Are we still significantly behind the SEC? Are we stronger than the Pac-12?
Everyone is significantly behind the SEC. I mean, they had 6 teams that were legitimate Top 12 teams (Bama, Florida, UGA, A&M, South Carolina, LSU). As far as the other conferences, it's year to year... Texas being down hurts the league's credibility. If Texas were the Texas of the Vince Young era, you could make the case for the Big 12 as a clear second, especially with Oklahoma State a legit Top 20 team year in, year out, and Kansas State playing good football again under Bill Snyder.
Saw tape of Stoops presser @ Cotton Bowl...Trammel from the Oklahoman questioned him about saunders playing. Very obvious Stoops doesn't like Trammel...how is your relationship with Stoops???
As bad as everyone else's...
Do you see the SEC forcing the Big XII to 12 teams w/championship game?
The Big 12 will go to 12 when it's financially viable. In other words, when someone brings in more than they would take out of the TV pot (think Florida State). That's why the Big 12 never brought in Louisville or Cincinnati.
How does Landry Jones feel he performed this year or what is the word on his performance? From a far away view, I would guess he thought he would have a better year.
Take out the K-State game, and Landry had a great year. Even in the Notre Dame loss, he played well. Without him, OU is not even competitive in that game. It wasn't the perfect season he probably dreamed of, but Landry improved his NFL draft stock by coming back, no question.
How much of an impact will Stills/Jefferson's decision be swayed by what the other does? Colvin/Jefferson?
I think they'll all make their decisions independently for the most part. However, these things tend to go in runs. In 2008, everyone who was on the fence, left. In 2009, everyone who was on the fence, stayed. I could see this playing out in kind.
Big 12 expands by 2014--how do see the odds?
Odds are against it, but who really knows? Two years ago, people at OU were 99 percent sure that they were going to the Pac-12, and in 24 hours that changed. Conference realignment is tricky to predict. Just ask Maryland.
Doesn't Stoops get that you are just doing your job..which is reporting team news to the public. Does he not like the media in general or certain reporters???
Pretty much a general disdain, though he definitely has a couple of guys that he dislikes more than others.
Jake I saw a question about Linebacker recruiting, in your opinion why should a top flight LB wish to come play here , besides the fact that we are OU and all the tangibles that come with that? Do you think that the bowl game will a preview of the LBs expanded role in for the upcoming season?
It's the same reason why OU has been unable to land a TE. If a school seldom uses your position, wouldn't that be a red flag as a recruit?
Hey Jake, I'm looking for more out of Tom Wort in the bowl game, what do you think has been the biggest key in his falling out as the guy in the middle, it seems Tom has lost some 'of that FIRE he used to have to lay people out. Thanks.
It's definitely been an adjustment year for Wort. He was really close to Venables, and Venables' scheme was tailored to his liking and skill set. Mike Stoops' scheme, not so much. We'll see. It wouldn't surprise me if Shannon played more than Wort in the Cotton Bowl.
With Lane Johnson being the only OL guy graduating do you see OU being even better on the OL next season? Is Evans coming back? He is a senior, but was probably given a medical red-shirt right?
Yeah, the OL should be stout. Evans might be ready for spring ball. He indeed redshirted this year. The Sooners will have Williams, Thompson, St. John and Farniok at OT, Ikard, Darlington and Woods at C, and Shead, Irwin, Evans, Kasitati at guard. Very deep group, potentially.
which player goes out with the biggest bang? Stills,TJ,Millard,or Colvin?
I could see Jefferson having a big game. For OU to win, he'll have to.
It appears Stoops relationship with media has gotten worse over the years. Plus, he's called the fans out for not being loud enough at home games. I know he's protecting his players, but why has his attitude been difficult? Is social media to blame?
Nah, he was like this before Twitter came around. I get along with Stoops fine, but he's not personable one iota with anyone in the local media, which makes for an icy back and forth.
Even though this is "Black Monday"...your contract for the upcoming year is being renewed!!!! Just wanted to say great job this year!!! Looking forward to a great 2013.
Good. I was worried I was falling off the fiscal cliff.
Landry Has been a Prime example of how a QB should be as far as on and off the field, why do you think so many people are hard on him as he's all but surpassed all OU's record books at the postion?
I only have 7 minutes left in this chat. One could probably do a senior psychology thesis on this question.
Landry didn't improve his stock by coming back.
Completely disagree. Landry's stock was never lower than late last season. You must have blocked out last year's Bedlam blowout out of your brain.
I know you stated earlier that you saw Drew Allen transferring. Any idea where he goes? Being a JR and already having redshirted he would have to go to a FCS or DII school to play right away, correct?
Nope, he could go to an FBS school, similar to what Russell Wilson did last year. Not sure where he would go. For him to transfer somewhere, I think he'd have to feel like his chances of starting there would really good. Otherwise, what's the point?
How many OU fans in the stands Friday?
A bunch. OU sold out its allotment in a couple of hours. The Cotton Bowl is expecting close to 90,000. Sooners should have 35,000-plus there, and maybe more.
Jake, thanks for answering our questions. Are you in Dallas covering the team? The hospitality room looks pretty sick....is it really that nice? Cotton Bowl committee really seems to do it up for the players, coaches and media.
No problem, Ed. Yeah, the Cotton Bowl is basically a de facto BCS bowl with the accommodations. The players are having a blast.
Most OU assistants have had great relationship with media, however Bob doesn't and the Head Coach responsibilities included media. These responsibilities pay for the castle he built overlooking i-35. Can we expect a "I'm a man, I'm 40!" press conference in the near future?
I doubt it. Stoops is way too in control to do something like that.
Well guys...that's all the time we have for today. Looking for a great game Friday night!! See you all next Monday for our chat, same time, same place. Until then..have a safe and happy New Year!!
What Jeff said. Everyone be safe tonight. Any questions throughout the week, hit me up on the SoonerNation forum, or at Twitter @Jake_Trotter. Should be a good one Friday.
