Happy New Year everyone!
Hello Matt, do you feel that Washington's DC Hasleet can come up with a scheme to contain the Hawks rushing/passing attack just enough to let the Skins put up enough points?
Haslett has done an outstanding job lately. They have been blitzing a ton and trusting the backend in coverage-I will say I am surprised, but it has worked really well. I don't see a lot of points in that game either way, but I do think SEA will run the ball much better than teams like Dallas did...and Wilson handles the blitz very well
Let me guess, Green Bay verse either Denver or NE with AFC winning right?
I do think Den and NEng are the two best teams and that they will meet in the AFC Championship with the winner winning the whole thing, but I don't have a team that I feel stands out in the NFC. I am picking GB and SEA this week, but after that, I think those four remaining teams are pretty equal. Will have to analyze the matchups-should be fun
Has Richard Sherman been the best CB in the league?
With Revis out of the picture this year, yes, I would have The Shermanator as #1 in 2012
Matt, how can you include 3 other WRs in your notable rookies list but exclude Justin Blackmon, the most productive rookie WR?
He only had two good games, which is where SO much of his production came from. He did spend some time in my Honorable Mentions, but I don't want that group to get too crowded.
What are the odds of a Reid/Vick reunion in Arizona?
I really like the idea of Vick to Zona...Reid too. Then what happens to Kolb? Kinda funny actully! But what %? I really have no idea
What are your thoughts of the Packers new found rushing attack and especially of DuJuan Harris. What a great find by Thompson!
Well, he is clealy much more explosive and potent than R Grant and Harris is def the best option on the roster right now. Fresh legs. And he will always get to run against favorable defensive fronts. Certainly a find, even if just for the short term. Want to see more. How well can he carry the load week after week?
So you penalize Justin for having two dominant games?
No, I penalized him for having 14 games that were not so great
What direction would you take in free agency and the draft if you were the Falcons' GM
I think a starting do-it-all RB is need number one for the Falcons. After that, I would look to find replacements for guys like Gonzo and Abraham.
Who do you think wins the battle of Hou O line vs CIN D line?
It is a good one! I think Atkins really causes a lot of problems for that OL. And Houston's right side is rather weak, esp in protection. The whole key to this game for me-and pretty much for the Texans every week, is can they control the LOS and run the ball effectively? I tend to doubt that they can in this game, which is why I am calling for a Cincy upset in a very low scoring game.
Martelis Bennett may be a good bet for Atlanta
If Gonzo truly retires, then sure-I am on board with that. Bennett is also a heck of an inline blocker.
How many yards does Peterson have against the Packers in the wildcard matchup this weekend?
Can AD carry the Vikings to the Super Bowl?
Priority for the 49ers in the draft: D-line depth or corner? Safety obv if Goldson leaves in FA.
I think you nailed it...maybe throw one more WR in the mix too.I think I would prioritize DL over CB, but it is close. You can just see how much their D dropped off when J Smith was out.
Russell wilson is under 6 foot.
Very observant of you....and your point?
Thoughts on the Bucs this year and next? Thanks
The big issue in TB is QB. Is Freeman truly the guy? VERY tough to answer that right now, so I think I would operate under the assumption that he is and build around him...although picking a QB in round 2-4 might not be a terrible idea either. But their secondary really needs a lot of work, esp at CB. One more pass rusher wouldn't hurt either. Pass D needs fixed.
Which fired coach would you be most excited to bring in as a coordinator?
Norv...plus a guy like Reid isn't going to take a coordinator job. Same might be true with Lovie.
Thoughts on David Wilson and Rueben Randle next season and beyond?
I am very much a fan of both and expect Wilson to be the lead back next year and Randle to be a fixture as the #3 WR. That O is in good shape all in all, but could use OL reinforcements, esp at RT
You buying into some of these big named evaluators opinion about Cowboys moving on from Romo don't you believe if they drafted better especially along the Offensive/Defensive Lines the games wouldn't always come down to being on his shoulders?
I am a Romo supporter and I think moving on from him would most likely end up backfiring. Hard to defend him after that latest INT, but he had a great year, esp in the second half of the season and Dallas isn't even competing for the playoffs without him. Put the Cowboys on his back there for a long stretch.
like Ruseell Wilson, I am under 6 foot as well...
Barely....Great show btw!
Ray Lewis retiring.... Where would you rank him in the history of LBs in the league?
Obviously many of these guys are before my time, but I do my homework. 1. LT 2. Butkus 3. Lewis 4. Ham
Todd (Pa) asked the exact same question in Mort's chat, and you both gave similar answers. Living proof Cowboys' fans just want everyone to hate Romo.
Very cool. I think Romo's greatest undoing in that he is not Roger Staubach or Troy Aikman...Big shoes
Where does Singletary rank among the GOAT MLBs?
Top 10, but not Top 5...seem reasonable?
how would you sell the Titans as a free agent destination? Small market, wildly inconsistent team, uncertain coaching staff AND QB situation, crazy owner with a history of being cheap...not sure I see the bright side besides Nashville being a great city...
Can Ponder play just as well this weekend with the stakes now higher?
This chat is acting up....sorry...I keep posting your questions, but can't see that they are posted
One of you asked about Ponder...I am happy to see his recent improvement-much fewer bad mistakes, which have haunted him all year. Also, actually playing with some comfidence. So those are great things obviously. And I think Minny runs the ball really well and protects Ponder well too, but that Pack secondary is really good and Minny just doesn't have weapons. He won't be able to keep up with AR
Jack Ham over Jack Lambert?
Yes Marc, Ham over Lambert...Ham did it all and didn't get as much fan fare, but was a total stud. Lambert is also a Top 10 type LB, but benefited more from those around him and was more a splash guy. Both are great. Ham is my guy.
Will Ravens draft Lewis' replacement or has Ellerbe proved he is sufficient?
Will, I like Ellerbe, but I do think adding another young ILB is a must for BALT this offseason
When you see a guy like Ken Whisenhunt who is an offense guy lead such a bad offense for the Cards how can he still be in line for another head coaching position?
Josh, Whiz has a very strong track record of coaching up very good Os...this is one year and he didn't have an OL or QB! Is some of that Whiz's fault? For sure, but I can see why a team would want him ASAP to take over...Buffalo perhaps
Can you guys see the questions or just my answers? I can only see what I have typed and posted.
Lions - bigger problem with coaching or personnel?
Lions...bigger problem with personnel than coaching. Need to build a running game and the D needs just about EVERYthing besides DTs. Still, it would be nice if someone would coach up Stafford and get his mechanics right. And in terms of taking quick fixes on guys with character issues, this is the bed that the entire organization made. Obviously it was a conscience decision.
Welker stays in NE?
I bet in the end, the Pats find room for Welker-and why would he want to leave? Just too good of a fit.
If RGIII's knee is 100% as they say it is... Then why not take off the brace and let him fly this sunday?
RG3's knee sure didn't look like it was 100% to me this past week!
Where does Mitchell Schwartz rank among the rt's in the league?
There is a real shortage of high end RTs right now and Schwartz was excellent in his rookie season. I would say he is already amongst the top 6 or 7 at his position-and prob climbing
Romo will silences the NFL world, critics, doubters, haters, and fans of the Dallas Cowboys! How do you feel about that statement?
I tend to agree on Romo....but not this offseason!
how good would t-rich have been this year if he didn't play 9 games with 2 broken ribs?
Glad you mentioned that! I do worry about his durability a bit now overall-and he runs with such violence, but wow-what a great year when you really consider the knee and ribs issues. Get well T Rich!
Has Urlacher played his last game as a Bear? Think he gets enshrined?
I do think Urlacher goes to the HOF. Last game in CHI? First I thought about it, but it sure seems logical when you consider the product he put on the field this year.
bet Welker would fit just fine in DEN, too... ;)
Wow...Welker in Den...hmmmm
What is Clark Hunt thinking by keeping Pioli as GM? Fans are irate in KC and confidence in him making good personnel decisions isn't high
Not understanding the keeping of Pioli at all...sure going to make hiring the next coach much tougher too.
What difference do you see Charles Woodson making this week?
I wonder how healthy Woodson truly is-and that secondary played great in his absence. Young and productive group. But Woodson causes a lot of problems with his ability to align all over the formation-could be mentally taxing for Ponder.
What is the bigger need for Dallas: DT or offensive line(RT, C, G)?
I am going with OL as Dallas' biggest need, although losing Spencer would hurt quite a bit when you factor in Ware's age. This OL is junk though...might need three starters.
Is the Bills job considered an attractive one for potential candidates?
I would not think the Bills job is considered an attractive one...no QB...tough place to recruit free agents to...also have plenty of other needs than QB
Hard to think about DEN offseason with my excitement about this postseason, but what are the offseason needs you see for the Broncos? And is DEN more attractive with Peyton Manning behind center?
Oh I think free agents would take less to go to DEN now with Peyton there. What do they need? Not much. A slot WR would be nice to replace Stokely eventually. I am still not totally sold on their DTs for the long haul and maybe a do-it-all LB that can really cover
o-line or more offensive weapons for DA BEARS?
CHI: OL, OL, OL, LB, TE, WR, OL
With the Ravens paying Suggs, Ngata, Webb, Rice and others handsomely where does Ed Reed fit in?
Sure seems like a great time for R Lewis AND E Reed to hang it up and cruise into the HOF
Will Pittsburgh sign a free agent this year and do you think Wallace and or Lewis will be gone this year?
Bringing back Lewis is a real Steelers-type move...I bet that gets done. But I also bet Wallace is playing elsewhere.
Den could use an elite tight end if they can get one. Coverage linebacker would be great as you point out.
DEN has a lot of quality TEs on the roster already though. Sure, adding a great one would be nice, but not a top their needs list for me.
Who in your opinion should win MVP this year? And why hasn't Harrison Smith gotten any attention as a DEF ROY candidate?
H Smith has been great...he has been right outside my Top 10 all year. BTW, weak class for DROY. I have been a Brady supporter for MVP for the majority of the season, but now-I think it just has to go to Peterson.
The difference between Eli and Romo is huge, not so big, razor thin?
Eli > Romo, but Romo had the better season. Both really run hot and cold. Both can take too many risks. I would say the difference is Not So Much
Could Bernard Pierce be a legitimate starter somewhere? Guy can run!
Pierce has been really impressive. Can he do it game after game? We don't know that, but I bet 5ish teams would gladly trade their starting RB for him right now
Where do you put these Panthers for awards?- Kuechly for DROY and Davis for comeback player- although he obviously doesnt get it
I did give Kuechly my DROY, but by a narrow margin-and again, weak class (unlike last year's). Davis has been superb-what a great story too!
Bengals D allowed 12.8 pts over the second half, how much do the Broncos want Houston to win Saturday?
Bengals D is big time...so well coached. Atkins! But how much would Cincy's O score in DEN? I don't think the Broncos are afraid of either.
Does Dwayne Bowe remain in KC?
Highly doubt Bowe stays in KC...keep hearing MIA, but there could be plenty of suitors. He has to want out
Who are you taking long term- T Rich or Doug Martin?
Love Martin, but I don't think he will ever be special. If he stays healthy, I think T-Rich will one day take the baton from A Peterson as the NFL's top RB
Where did you rank Rodgers for MVP and Hayward for DPOY?
MVP: 1. Peterson 2. Brady 3. Manning 4. Calvin 5. Rodgers....Hayward would prob be 2nd for DROY
Who is the better tackle playing this weekend- R Okung or T Williams?
Okung and Williams have both come on very strong this year and are living up to their draft stock. Tough call, but give me Okung by a narrow margin. Soon, they should rank amongst the best OTs in the NFL
I know there are a lot of Tebow critics and maybe deservedly so...but he needs a little credit for bringing the read-option back in vogue in the NFL..saw RG3 run it last week and D-Ware was helpless...
Good point Scott, although last year, Newton was running it just as much and even before TT was in DEN...but I think it is here to stay
Is Fred Jackson out of Buffalo next year?
F Jax can still really play-and Spiller isn't a 25 touch type of RB...I would keep him around.
So you're telling me KC needs QB, WR, possible LT, and DT in that order this offseason? Jon Baldwin as a #1 option sounds disturbing to me.
No, I like KC's OL quite a bit assuming they bring back Alberts, who played well. 1. QB 2. WR...drop off...then DE/CB/ILB
Folks, that is a wrap for me. Great chat as always! Take care
