So I wonder what you all want to talk about today ... Go!
Andrea, did Louisville change your mind?Curtis (Louisville)What will the preseason ranking of Louisville be next season if they .....1.get blown out 2. lose but keep it respectable and 3. WIN!!!Andrea Adelson (4:04 PM)I am not sure the results of this game are going to make a huge difference in preseason rankings next year, though a victory over an SEC team will not hurt. What I am saying is I don't think it will be the difference between a Top 20 ranking and a Top 10 ranking. Somewhere between 15-20 is my guess for right now, but so much can change between now and August.
Man, I am regretting a lot of my predictions right now. A win THAT DECISIVE should give Louisville a preseason ranking somewhere around 10?
With the change of mind of Boise State (back to MWC) and the possible change of mind for San Diego State, the question is--will the Big East be able to survive as a football entity after next season (the final season under the current system)?? Any thoughts???
IF those two teams leave, the Big East has 10 teams. It has survived at 8 for years. So how is the Big East folding up shop, and where are these 10 teams going to play football?
What do you think of Doug Marrone shopping himself around the NFL? It doesn't seem like he is the first choice of any NFL team and it's got to be killing SU's recruiting efforts.
Does it not seem that way? I just read the reports like you do and it sounds like teams are interested in him.
Yes we know all the top BE team are leaving but this UL victory do help the BE image for now right? well at least before more realignment articles take over the attention again...You can answer the first part of of the question..the second part is just my frustrated point of view lol
I think it helps in the short-term, but nobody is going to all of a sudden forget that things are going south for this league. But yes, there is a temporary boost.
AA, you can pat me on the back if you want....in last Friday's chat I predicted Cards 28 -FL 17.....fairly close.......and you replied I was being optimistic thinking the Cards could score that much. :). Strong!!!
You get a major pat on the back. I wonder how many times I will be saying "I was wrong on this chat." So far, we are at two.
AA do you think with this win over Florida will this cause Coach Strong to be consider for a bigger position, maybe in the pros?
I am not sure he is going to the pros, but yes his name will no doubt come up again when there are openings next year. I am pretty sure about that.
Congrats to the Cards on their dominating win last night. I enjoyed every second of that game. Now on to my question: would it be better for UConn to hire a DC from within the system, such as Hank Hughs who already had the job with Edsall and knows the system, or hire someone outside and try to start over with a new defensive scheme? Personally, I think the best bet would be to promote Hughs so that the system doesn't change too much and I've heard players really like him as well.
I am all for anything that will give UConn consistency on defense, which has been the best part of that team. I do not think there is any need to do anything differently. So if that means continuity with someone on staff, so be it. The offense, on the other hand ...
Hello Andrea,My question is about the Bearcats constantly being overlooked in the pre-season polls. I know that we failed to perform our big games but Bearcat Nation is getting a little uneasy about the lack of pre-season recognition for our Cats. We have had 5 10 win seasons in the past 6 years. The only other programs in BCS conferences that can say that they have done that are Oklahoma, Bama, Oregon and Virginia Tech with Ohio State falling out due to vacated wins. All of said teams start the pre-season ranked except for one team and you can probably guess who that is. Do you think there is any possibility that we start ranked at all next year or is it just going to be par for the course once again?
I am going to guess it will be par for the course once again. We have discussed this a few times on the blog, and I understand the frustration from the Cincinnati point of view. Those other teams you mention are in more respected conferences. And aside from Oregon, have past success and name recognition that make it irresistible for voters to rank 'em in preseason. I will say this -- I do not see how Virginia Tech is ranked in the preseason Top 25 in 2013. I will be absolutely stunned.
Louisville finally extracted revenge on a team wearing orange and blue in a dome.
Is Kyle Flood the long-term answer at RU? I sense in your writings about the bowl loss you're not sure if he's plugged in to what his offense needs.P.S. Current over/under on "I was wrong" is 3. But it's early in the chat.
You are right. I am not sure about his blind loyalty to Nova, to be honest. And whether that is going to be a detriment going into next season. What he did in Year 1 is great, winning a share of the first Big East title. But he had a huge advantage -- a superior defense. We will know more about him next year when there are major holes to fill in that group and -- as he says -- Nova returns as the starter.
So I'm assuming Louisville will be favorite to win every tittle their is for the Big East, but who is after them. Does Rutgers recover from their collapse? Cincy?
My way too early power rankings for 2013 come out next Tuesday. Stay tuned.
Any word on specifics of Coach Strong's new contract? Or were they waiting to go to the table until after the game?
Nothing yet, but if I had a guess it would be in the $3 mill neighborhood. Just a guess.
Big East 4-0 against the mighty SEC!
A chance for 5-0 Saturday!
What happens to Skip Holtz? He turned Syracuse down for the USF job and now he's going to get at least 52 weeks of unemployment. Where does he land?
For those who may have missed this - He is actually now head coach at Louisiana Tech.
You can also Pat ME on the back, in a previous chat I stated that "most Big East fans don't believe Boise St. will play a down in the Big East"...I'm patting myself...
Anybody else want some pats on the back?
AA, thank you for the great posts after Louisville's big win! I'm sure you were as surprised as most of us at the domination by the Cards. :)
Surprised would be putting it mildly. I think my jaw dropped a few times. We had not seen that complete game out of Louisville all year.
Better chance Andrea? Remaining & Future Big East Teams merge with remnants of Conference USA or Big East attempts to negotiate a scheduling partnership with the MWC to boost both conferences strength of schedule? Or do you think neither of these are worthwhile?
At this point, I am going to say I do not see either one happening. As I mentioned before, if the Big East does lose San Diego State, it would still be at 10 teams and could add more. Without the Western programs, not sure what a scheduling partnership with the MWC would do. It would not boost strength of schedule, that is for sure.
Andrea, With Boise State gone, what are the chances SDSU stays in the Big East? Would it ultimately be better for San Diego to leave to get the conference back to a more managable size?
According to a report from Brett McMurphy that we had yesterday, San Diego State does not yet have the votes to get back into the MWC. So it may not be up to them.
As said already, the Big East is 4-0 against the SEC with a possibility to be 5-0. I understood the skepticism to say that the SEC was still better than the BE at 3-0, but at 5-0 do you have to just sit down and admit that the BE has some serious chops?
Well, again, it is hard to do that when the teams with the wins are going somewhere else. Tough spot for the Big East to be in. Plus, of those 5 wins, I think 2 will be vs. bowl teams (Kentucky, Missouri and Arkansas did not make bowls).
UF barely beat Lousianna Lafayette in the swamp( should had lost) yet you and ESPN are suprised by the Ville Win?
Last I checked, Vegas oddsmakers do not work for ESPN and had Florida a 15-point favorite. Oh, and Louisville actually DID lose to 5-7 Uconn. So ...
The Big East owns the SEC like the MAC owns the Big East.
It would not boost strength of schedule for Cinncy and UConn and USF to play Boise St (and Houston when they are added eventually to the MWC)? Gee here I thought the Big East was adding these teams to make the conference more attractive and increase the chances for an at-large spot in the new BCS format...
You do not create a scheduling partnership with a conference to have your teams play ONE school. C'mon man.
I know this is probably a Card-centric chat today, but please throw a Husky another bone. Have you heard anything to corroborate Coach George DeLeone is leaving for the New York Football Giants?
Only seem some reports on Twitter and one comment from Mike Smith on Twitter, though I am not sure if he knows it for sure or is just commenting on reports. I hope that is not confusing. Bottom line: I have not heard official word.
I am a MWC guy. It seems to me that the MWC and BE should work together and not fight over teams. It is in our best interest for survival. We are not the Big Four and don?t have the resources!!!! Having some kind of championship game I think would be great. I don?t know how to make it work, but I think we all would be better off. What do you think?
Tell me how this benefits. Boise State is the best team in the MWC. What does a partnership with Nevada/New Mexico/Hawaii/Utah State do? And why risk your chances at a spot in an elite playoff game with a useless game featuring the champions from both leagues?
It was an EXAMPLE Andrea...don't "Chris Carter...come'on man" me! LOL...i couldn't think of the other MWC teams without cheating....Nevada, Fresno St, etc....some would say better than playing Tulane, ECU and UCF
Yeah but they already have to play Tulane, ECU and UCF. Adding Nevada and Fresno State does nothing. Gotta go on the road and play teams from the other big conferences.
AA How smart does the ACC look right now for bringing in a struggling Su team at the time they were offered, along with a Pitt team that was doing the same thing, and now L'ville pulls the upset against The SEC
Just did a post over on the ACC blog saying the Louisville win was a big one for the ACC, too. Validates that entry, no question. Syracuse's performance far exceeded expectations as well so I think the ACC is happy today.
What surprised you more, the amazing transformation of Louisville's defense or that Teddy and the receiving corps found a way to do what they do best?
Defense, hands down. I thought the only way Louisville had a chance was if Teddy threw them to the win. But the defense ... did not see the type of performance out of the Run D in particular coming.
After watching a very dejected Stewart Scott last night, would you say that ESPN insiders are upset about Louisville's win over the vaunted Gators?
You will have to ask ESPN Insiders. From my perspective, I have no horse in the race. You guys know that.
Which conference is stronger? The MWC with Boise St. and San Diego St. or the Big East without them?
Really tough to overlook the bottom feeders in the MWC, even with Boise State staying.
Just saw the report on Tuberville's contract at UC. Wanna bet that Mick Cronin has these things, $$$$$$$, dancing in his head? BTW, we do love you here in Greater Cincinnati, even though you give our beloved Cats very little love in your pre season picks.
Thank you, Steve. Not surprised to see the contract figures for Tubs. He was making that much at TT, figured they would have to pay for a high-profile coach.
Any chance Louisville bolts to the ACC a year early?
AA I know you are following the same stories most of us our do you see any of the College Coaches leaving for the the NFL? Marrone,Kelley or O'brien
Yes I have seen their names thrown around for NFL jobs. But I have no idea what they are going to do. I only cover 1 of those coaches!
Was not Lousiville in CUSA a moment ago? The "Bigs" love to poach the Big East... So whos to say the new kids on the Big East block can't be the next Lousiville and the suprising strength of the confrence remains just with new teams.
You are absolutely right -- a post I was going to delve into next week. You beat me to it.
Not sure if you noticed, but what about that master stroke of Strong's bringing DE BJ Butler to the offensive side of the ball? Dude had a huge catch that almost was a touchdown not to mention him being instrumental in blocking for a couple run plays.
I noticed all right. When I saw him rumbling down the field I was like .. could it be .. oh my! He has done that a few times there, so it kinda fits in.
Any truth to the rumor that you're retiring from ESPN after going all in on Louisville last night and cashing out in Vegas?
Ha! You know I did not pick Louisville but if I had ...
Down goes Frazier!! How bout them cards AA? I was very impressed with ville's domination of UF. Teddy Heisman picking apart that secondary, the defense getting healthy really showed, and the bend but don't break by the O line. Jeremy wright really showed up in the second half when we needed him! I know ur a gainesville girl but what are ur thoughts?
I am an Orlando girl who attended the University of Florida, so I have a lot of knowledge about that program in particular. My thoughts: I expected Florida to be aggressive up front defensively and follow what UConn did. Was surprised they did not bring more heat and only rushed 4 primarily. I was also surprised by Louisvile's front 7. Played its best game all year. What surprised me most was that Louisville won up front, on the offensive and defensive lines. I did not expect that at all. AS for Teddy, nothing about his performance surprised me. I was a little perturbed at all the people commenting on the game during our live chat who thought he was a revelation!
How ridiculous does N. Illinois being umpteen spots ahead of Louisville at season's end look now? I know people like to poke fun at the Big East, but the Big East is still much better than the MAC. For a MAC team to be ranked as high as Northern Illinois was, they should be unbeaten....period.
The MAC did own the Big East this year ...
A.A. thank you for all you do and I hope you will cover the MWC,a real shame the Big East crashed and burned, not unlike what happened when BSU moved to the MWC the first time and all the players left ,now with the new TV deal and bonuses what are your thoughts? good deal ? Is this the way of the futureBest V
I think Boise State ended up with the best deal it could get for itself so it is a huge win for the Broncos. I don't think this is the way of the future I just think Boise State took advantage of the situation and made it work.
Will every BE team be scrambling to find two football games now that Boise and probably SDSU are leaving?
Not necessarily. Remember, Big East was going to play an eight-game league schedule. So if 10 teams remain, it will still be able to play an eight-game league schedule.
Is this a win for the Big East or the ACC. With one of the first stories about Florida not being prepared it made me think this was a Big East win.
I think it is for both. It will obviously count for the Big East, and it should count for the Big East. But the ACC looks good in the process as well.
I didn't see McMurphy's report- why is SDSU having a hard time getting votes. Their football is solid, but their basketball has been very good and an increased piece of the NCAA tourney pot would be attractive, no?
According to the report, the MWC prefers BYU.
Biggest surprise SU win or the ville?
I picked Syracuse to win, so Louisville.
And Iowa owned Northern Illinois. Totally ludicrous in my opinion for them to be ranked as high as they were.
Well they turned out to be over ranked. But a lot of teams are over ranked/under ranked every year. IT is an imperfect system, unfortunately.
So then, to follow up on the MWC vs. Big East comparison. Despite everything, is the Big East still worth more to the TV networks?
That is one question I do not have the answer to. I do not think the BE will even know until it knows who is in and who is out. Hard to negotiate a TV deal without knowing who is in your league for 2013.
One added note: Please pick the Cats to finish poorly! (wink)
You may not like the preseason rankings come Tuesday ...
Great blogging AA!! Q: who has more upside, Nova, Laviano or Rankin? (Sp)
I would love to find out myself. Gotta wait for spring practice. I just do not see how opening up the competition in the spring hurts anybody.
Have you heard anything about ESPN setting up a marquee game between Louisville and someone next year? It's been mentioned on Twitter by a local sports reporter in Louisville, but no names named.
ESPN does not run these things by me. Shocking, I know. So I really have no idea.
Don't you think that Kyle Flood will hold a competition this spring for QB? I think his comments about Nova are just things he had to say.
I do not think he had to say it. He could have said we always have an open competition, we want our players to be better, etc, etc. He says that and then opens it up in the spring, what does that say? He has no more confidence in Nova?
why doens't the big east make a mad rush at Army....to solidify it's northeast position? I know....Army isn't a major player....but, who is left besides MAC or CUSA teams? Thanks for the chat
Army was in a conference once and it was an unmitigated disaster. Do not think Army wants to travel down that road unless absolutely necessary.
Being a Knight Fan, If.... the ACC gets raided post Md winning the lawsuit do you think UCF gets picked up or what is the pecking order of the new BE. In addition, why do you think UCF is looked at as a lower tier program for the new comers. We have a pretty solid football and bball program.
My guess is Cincinnati and UConn would be ahead of UCF. As for the view that UCF is a lower-tier program, I am not sure that is the case. It's not as if people think Memphis and Tulane are better.
If l'ville got hammered by UF how overrated would they have looked?
I think people would have just shrugged their shoulders and said, "Told you so." Honestly.
Any chance for PITT on saturday? what are Ole Miss weaknesses and can PITT take advantage of them?
Sure there's a chance. Ole Miss turns the ball over. A lot. So if Pitt can take advantage there and control the clock, establish the run, Tino manage the game ... Pitt win.
What do you think Bridgewater's chances at a heisman are next year?
He definitely goes into the season as a candidate. Louisville has to go undefeated for him to be a serious candidate, and he has to be even better next year, complete upward of 70 percent, over 3,000 yards passing ...
Who do you have in tonight's almost national championship? K-State or Oregon?
Do you think the Louisville win shows that the present ranking system is garbage?
You forgot to mention Northern Illinois. And this is my concern with the future playoff system. The same humanoids who help with the rankings are going to do their own to come up with the top 4 teams in the nation and then the top ranked of the "other five" for the elite-level bowl spot. There will continue to be human bias in all of these rankings. Strength of schedule is going to be taken into account, so I anticipate there will be plenty of arguing moving forward. Nothing will change.
Lville vs Michigan @ ford field Lville vs ohio state @ Lucas Oil Lville vs Oklahoma @ Georgia Dome Just some options i am recommending to the schools/NCAA/ESPN. Send this up the ladder
lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tino managing the game?
Maybe he will take advantage of his last opportunity ...
Hey Andrea. If the Heisman voting were held AFTER all the bowl games were done, how good of a chance would you give Teddy wearing a suit and tie at the ceremony (not necessarily winning, but getting votes and being on stage).
You mean next year or what were the chances this year?
Why did it take so long for Louisville to put a complete game together? Youth?
I honestly think Charlie Strong was more motivated than he ever has been to win a game, and he got his players more motivated than they ever have been to win a game. This was the BIGGEST MARQUEE MATCHUP Louisville has had in the 3 years he has been there. I honestly feel as if he made sure his guys were not going to lose this one.
The chances this year.
Not sure the game would have been enough this year. I don't think the Heisman finalists would have changed. BUT I will say this -- no two players have benefitted more from their bowl performances in relation to the 2013 Heisman than Bridgewater and Jadeveon Clowney.
now that boise st is staying in the mwc will there be only 11 teams and no divisions
Unsure on San Diego State so there is no answer right now.
Please help me understand the UCF fans thinking that the ACC wants them? I ask this all the time...they have ONE good NFL player in the League (Brandon Marshall) and have beaten ONE Ranked Team in the past 10 years (#15 Houston in 2009)
Because they are a "sleeping giant?"
Andrea, I think when we go to the top four teams and a committee that the teams will oblige the strength of schedule requirement by scheduling tough out of conference games. So B.E. has a good as shot as anyone, as long as they don't schedule cupcakes. And of course WIN. Thoughts?
Still think perceived conference strength will play a huge role. I just do not see an undefeated BE team outranking an undefeated SEC/Big Ten/Big 12/Pac-12 team that has "name recognition." I hope I am wrong on that, I would like everybody to get a fair shot and not have it be an SEC playoff tournament.
Where does USF make your 2013 list for next week
I can guarantee you will not see USF in the Top 3.
Didn't UofL dominating Florida prove (again) that SOS is very overrated as a criterion when evaluating a team's quality? Just the latest in a pretty common string of games... Utah over Bama.... Boise over OU.
Well you know as well as I do that people make excuses for the favored team that ends up losing. "Not motivated to play." Blah blah blah. It is all hogwash. Big East fans know that pundits have a hard time in dealing with the ACTUAL facts.
Example: Mississippi State HAD NO BUSINESS BEING RANKED. They beat nobody. They were ranked because they play in the SEC. They lost all their games against good teams.
Happy day!!!! AA does not see USF higher than three! That means we are going to win the BE next year based on the AA jinx! J/K :-)
I knew you guys would like that one.
in reply to CardsFanTX I think that SOS is a good way to judge a teams overall strength. The win has more to do with Coach Strong and his players being prepared and ready. Give the man a month and he can probably beat anyone.
He completely outcoached BOOM in that game.
AD at SDSU made disparaging about the MWC after accepting invite to Big East. In short, he burned their bridge hence the lack of votes at this point. We'll see how it plays out.
MWC has until Jan. 31 to change its mind.
One more thing -- I am not sure where BYU stands in all this but it did not have the greatest relationship with the MWC, either. Interesting the MWC prefers BYU.
AA, BINGO! THANK YOU for making that point. Nice to see an expert agree with what many of us find so frustrating (about the SOS argument and general bias).
Frustrates me too and I am not a fan. Those who have followed me at ESPN know how much I have defended Boise State over the last 3 years.
Can you imagine Rutgers trying to beat Florida? The Rutgers offense might have got negative yards.
I cannot envision any scenario in which Rutgers would win that game. Defense would be fine since Florida has no QB. But Matt Elam would have really hurt somebody.
why doesn't UL schedule harder i mean r non conference slate is ohio, kentucky, eastern ky,florida international we need to schedule better
I think that could end up really hurting Louisville next year. Another terrible nonconference schedule. Actually worse than this year, because at least this year Louisville played North Carolina.
If SD St does decide to head back west to the MWC, who do you think will be the most likely school the big east will try to add?
If that happens, I am not sure the BE has any reason to go West. And what school would leave to join what appears to be an unstable situation? I think the BE is in a very difficult spot here.
Speaking for myself, I'd expect BYU to remain independent as they've an excellent tv contract and have more options when it comes to scheduling games.
That would be my guess, too.
Any idea if new teams will join the league ahead of schedule due to BSU's departure? ECU maybe?
Nothing has been set there.
You know AA I feel really bad for SDSU if they cannot get back to the MWC. They bent over backwards to help Boise get into the Big West and now they left them stuck in the BE without a playing partner!
That is why they are getting this "right of first option" with the MWC until Jan. 31. Boise State is trying to help 'em out.
Just wanted yout thoughts on the State of PA suing the NCAA...I know this is a question for Brian and Adam, but you give more intelligent answers...and have "no dog in the fight"
I am incredulous that the state of Pennsylvania would waste taxpayer dollars on this case. Let us remember what transpired ON THE ATHLETIC FACILITIES OF A STATE UNIVERSITY. CHILD RAPE. Penn State got the sanctions it deserves.
All right, folks, my time is up for today. Thanks for joining me again! Have a great weekend, everyone!
