Good morning, gang. We've got sixty minutes of fantasy chattage up ahead, so why don't we get right to it? Second cup of coffee is in hand... who is up first?
Better keeper regardless of round Austin jackson or Carlos Beltran?
Obviously, we're still in the early stages of MLB rankings, but in terms of keeper leagues, I tend to worry only about the upcoming season. To that end, I'd rate Carlos higher on my initial lists.
Need to keep 4 of the following at no price: RG3, Foster, Morris, AJ Green, Damaryious Thomas, and Dez. thanks you Mr. Mass.
RG III and Foster are easy picks. I do like Morris, but probably would steer clear or try to trade, simply because of the "too many eggs" fears. Green and Thomas would be my other keeps.
will mark sanchez ever succeed in the nfl ever again? how can a qb regress so fast in such a short amount of time? im watching the jets in two consecutive afc champnship games.. i blink and they are the laughing stock of the nfl? WHAT HAPPENED
Well, for one thing, the line between success and failure in the NFL is very thin. While I think Sanchez has taken a step back this year, you have to also take into account the loss of Santonio and lack of talent to step in.
Through a good draft and shrewd trading I ended up with a loaded roster last year (and the title). We only can keep three and I have Trout, Kershaw, Verlander, Heyward, Posey, and Fielder. Do I load up on batters or keep the two pitchers along with Trout and just not worry about SP for the first 10 rounds of the draft?
Normally, I go hitter over pitcher, and should you decide to move forward with Trout, Fielder and Posey, you'd get no argument from me. However, we are talking about the top two SP, and by keeping them, you don't have to worry about picking your net SP for a good 15 rounds... I'd personally go Trout and the arms.
Who do you think will Play in Super Bowl XLVII?
It would be hard for me to go against New England, and for the NFC, I lean to Green Bay.
Who is a player people are down on that you see rebounding this year, a la Adam Dunn?
It's a tough question to answer because we're so early in the process. I don't yet really know who people are down on. In about a month's time once a lot more focus gets shined on the baseball rankings that I'll better be able to see where my views differ from others.
Why were the Gators ranked 3rd, and when is the BCS going to stop the favoritism ?
The BCS system is flawed because it relies on humans who can bend the results. That's exactly what the system was supposed to prevent, but by slowly working the computers out of it, you actually end up with more manipulation - or suspicion thereof - than when you started.
What do you think the buckeyes will be ranked in the preseason polls for football?
I'm not aware of what they're graduating and how good their recruiting class is supposed to be, but obviously, they'll be in the mix at the top. Which is part of the problem as well. Personally, I'd simply start the season with the end of the year rankings and go from there. Bad teams will lose early and in the end it all works out.
Who do you think is in the Denver backfield next season? If they don't bring in another RB, where about would you rank Moreno? Thanks and have a happy new year!
We've got a draft and we've got free agency... and we still have several games left this season where Moreno may well answer the question once and for all. Patience!
[do some of these people think you're the 12:00pm NCAA FB chat?] Anyway, Deep AL Only league. Upside for W.Davis in KC? Assuming he's in the rotation (c'mon KC - do the right thing, and put him in the rotation!), what would you guess his upside stat line would be? Same question for W.Y.-Chen...? Thanks for chatting!
I don't go too in depth with stat lines just yet. The details tend to take more time to develop with questions of roles for players on new teams and free agent signings yet to come... but from a ranking standpoint, I'd put Chen in the tail end of the top 50 SP right now, and Davis further back...
Keep 3 in a ppr....all at the same price...Forte, Spiller, Welker, Cruz....thanks and happy New Year...
I'd let Cruz go. I wouldn't go so far as to call him overrated, but I do wonder if the Giants are as concerned as I am that perhaps he might have already had his career year.
Who are your favorites for Cy Young and MVP in 2013?
Round up the usual suspects... Verlander, Kershaw, King Felix, Braun, Miggy, Trout, Cutch.
I know it's early, but whom are you tar in baseball drafts after the 5th rnd? Who are you avoiding?
It is early, but let's talk the strategy of targeting/avoiding... the key is to do your research and make lists you are comfortable with. Then you do some mocks to get a feel for the market. Once you do that, you'll get an idea how early you need to reach for certain guys and who you can wait on. Remember, value is always relative to what the other owners think more than what you think.
Who is the top SS in your rankings right now?
Much to my chagrin, it's Rollins. I always say you have to listen to the numbers and take your personal opinions out of the mix... and in this case, it's never been more true.
I have a keeper problem. I'm pretty sure I'm keeping doug martin with a 5th, but for my second keeper I can have Cobb with 13th or Bryce Brown with a last round pick... any advice?
I'd lump anything after 10th round together and go with the most upside. That is Cobb to me.
Adrian Gonzalez. Gonna be a top tier NL 1B option? 1B was thin in the NL last year. Also, think Mike Minor takes the next step forward?
Gonzalez can definitely be a top 25 player overall. He was able to do it in a pitchers park like they have in San Diego before, he can do it again. Minor definitely has continued to grow, but I'm not quite yet sold on him making that big leap into "must have" territory.
Cuse Cuse Cuse Cuse Cuse
About 898 more of those and you'll have one for each Boeheim win.
Do you think M. Pineda is worth a speculative late draft pick to place on the DL until he's ready for the 2nd half the season?
I can see that. Generally speaking, I don't trust pitchers who are coming back from so much time off, especially given how large the pool to choose from is in most leagues. But if you have stash room...
I'm in a keeper league and will be in win-now mode for 2013. For my last two keepers, I have to decide amongst Hanley, Heyward, and Goldschmidt. My other keepers are J-Upton and Trout, so does that mean I should keep the infielders? Thanks A.J.
I think you want to keep the best players you can and worry about filling holes later. I'd let Gold go back.
Gio or Cueto? Can only keep one.
Talk about a hard-to-go-wrong choice. I think I'm more willing to buy in on Gio, but it's splitting hairs at this point.
Why not Castro as the top SS?
He's my No. 2, so it's not like this is a snub. When it comes to rankings, you must always keep in mind that the gap between slots is often very small.
AJ, I'm keeping Tulo and CarGo, which 3 of the following should be kept also: E5(1b/dh only), AGon, Zobrist, C. Santana, Revere, Shields, Dickey?
I'd keep AGon and E5 for sure. I rank Zobrist > Revere > Santana of the hitters. Leaning to Shields though.
Do you think it was time for me to hang it up
If you're asking the question, Ray, then you already have your answer.
Could there be any better time of year than NFL Playoffs?
Certainly it is the best time I've had all of 2013.
Thoughts on what will happen with Mike Olt? Have him for $5 in AL only league and could use him at 3b.
A lot depends on how the lineup ends up shaking out. If there's not a lot ahead of him to drive home and Profar doesn't click either, it could be a long year.
'Bama v. ND...who you got?
Not even going to watch in all likelihood. Waiting one month between the end of the season until this game has completely removed any interest I had in the first place.
Would you keep a young hitter like Machado over a pitcher like Brett Anderson? Dylan Bundy? We keep 15 in a 10 tm 5x5 league.
Keeping 15, sure. Even if a hitter struggles, the counting stats tend to help you more than a pitcher's ratio stats hurt you.
That's the end of the hour according to my clock. I'd like to thank all for your questions, and if I didn't get to you, there's always Twitter(@ajmass)- Happy New Year! Until the next time, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
