What is your opinion of Bob "Big Game Boob" Stoops now?
It's going to be a fun 60 minutes...
Jake, I love OU (obviously), and did not like seeing us get thrashed in the cotton bowl. That being said, I didn't think it was that big of a deal. Only thing that worried me was how pathetic our D-line looked. Any hope for pressure from the front 4. Also am I down playing the significance of this loss? Oh and have you seen www.fire-bob-stoops.com? What's wrong with us OU fans?
Was it the end of the world? No. But I wouldn't say it wasn't a big deal. The goal at OU is to compete for titles, and the Cotton Bowl showed just how far the Sooners are from being at that level. I have little hope for the front 4 in 2013 -- Sooners lose 4 of their top 5 defensive linemen.
Jake, three things to be excited about for next season?
1. New offense with a running QB; 2. A deep o-line that, if it can stay healthy, should be a good one; 3. Plenty of playmakers (Millard, Saunders, Williams, Clay, Shepard) left offensively to put up points.
Treadwell is going to Ole Miss right?
Most likely, unless Oklahoma State blows him away on his visit this weekend.
Jake is there any linebackers that ou is targeting and are they interested at all?
Hard to say at this point. The Mastrogiovanni caught everyone by surprise. Sure OU would like to replace him with another linebacker, but I'm not sure what else is out there.
Hi Jake,We appreciate your work. The last two articles about "our defense" and "our team in 2013" hit the nail right on the head. But, my question is our O, in all big games (Especially bowl games), given the time to prepare and implement new schemes (with the entire seasons tape in hand), they have done a horrendous job of game planning.Evidenced by us scoring us less than 20 points (03 LSU, 04 USC, 08 Fld, 12 A&M). What seems to be the issue?
Hard to connect one-game trends over a 10-year span. I'd be more concerned with the offense no-showing in 3 big games this year (Kansas State, Notre Dame, A&M). 19, 13 and 13 points are not going to get it done, especially with how little defense the Sooners have playing.
How many recruits to you think will be in the 2013 Sooner recruiting class? Since scholarships are not 4-year, just 1-year at a time, have you heard of Stoops not renewing some underperforming players scholarship? Also, A&M has 35 recruits and counting...how can they sign that many players with the scholarship limits?
I have not heard of anyone being shown the door, but there's almost always a couple of guys that don't come back. I think the Sooners will try to get in the 23-man range, but we'll see. You don't want to add guys just to add guys. A&M can add that many guys because they can backload them to last year's class by enrolling, in A
What'd you think of Mike running the D with one LB?
I thought it was a disaster. Didn't you?
Assuming no one flips, are there enough good uncommitted recruits out there that the Sooners are in on to turn the recruiting season around?
Aaron Cochran the OT and Adrian Baker the DB would really give this class a shot in the arm. Both guys are 4-star prospects. This could be a decent class if OU gets both those guys. Other than that, there's not a lot left on the board. The Sooners have been good about flipping a guy or two late, though, and maybe they can do it this year, too.
Any word on Courtney Gardner? Is he still coming to OU?
I don't know where Gardner will end, but it most definitely will not be OU.
your prediction for the 2 deep depth chart on defense?
Extensive breakdown on this will be up on SoonerNation this Wed. Breaking down the offensive depth chart tomorrow.
In your opinion, why was OU's running attack so inconsistent this year? Yes, O-line play was hindered w all the injuries, but they would go from rushing for 150 one wk to 15 the next. They have good enough lineman and backs to do better, right?
For the same reason that Kansas State struggled to throw the ball in the Fiesta Bowl. The Sooners are not built to run the ball. They are built to pass, pass protect, and catch the ball. You're not going to maul people on the ground with converted tight ends playing o-line. Lane Johnson and Gabe Ikard are fabulous pass protectors, but neither is Duke Robinson.
Thanks for signing my copy of I Love Oklahoma/I Hate Texas, made for a great Christmas present! Great read so far, really enjoying it.
Good to hear.
how are evans, nila, and williams looking healthwise? And what looks to be the starting o-line going into next season?
All three are expected to participate in spring ball on some basis. Tomorrow, an indepth breakdown of the o-line rotation in 2013 will be posted on SoonerNation.
It sucks that Landry went out like that. Crazy the Landry era is over. But anyways, do you think the OU mens bb squad can ever sustain sucessful seasons with the horrible fan support? Support OU basketball people! Games are cheap. So show up!
Bedlam this weekend. Would be a good one to see.
Jake, how long will it take Mike to sure up this iffy at best defense?
Hard to see OU being better on defense next year. Too many key guys gone, and I have major concerns about what's returning at tackle. But by playing so many young guys, the Sooners could be much better in 2014. It's hard to project that far out, though. Too many variables. Heck, maybe they play better next year and surprise. Right now, though, I don't see it.
Well that was a dumpster fire! You know I won my bowl game right? Does anybody miss me yet? How's the LB recruiting going??
And is there any chance ou gets Treadwell?
There's a chance, but...
I know there's a lack of talent in some of the areas of the roster (cough, d-line), but I think it's coaching too. Any cleaning house?
They cleaned house last year. That option has been exhausted, at least on the defensive side.
Is Colvin coming back next year?
Don't know yet. He's still thinking about it. I think it's 60/40 he stays.
So, we get throttled in the Cotton Bowl and now Jr. Day is being postponed. What exactly is going on with our program right now? There are so many things that just make no sense.
Curious, I thought that was curious, too. Logistically, it made sense to postpone Junior Day, but that doesn't look real good, either. Someone should have done some better planning at the forefront.
Jake, do you think that Bell will really win the starting job or do you see another player like Knight getting the position?
Bell's job to lose, but Knight is a threat. Gonna be hard to beat out Bell, though.
I still think the 'everybody panic' folks are out of their mind. The problems with the defense this year was a simple as recruiting misses. If Washington and Mcfarland had panned out like expected, everything changes. That being said...what hope is there at all for next year's D-line?
I think the defensive issues go deeper than two players. I'm not optimistic about next year's d-line. Who coming back is a potential All-Big 12 performer? Chuka? Grissom? Phillips? I don't see it.
Mr Trotter! Putting the Belldozer in on the 1st two drives just killed OU? What is your thoughts on killing momentum and playing catch-up?
I think it also knocked Landry out of rhythm. He was hot at the beginning of the game. Plus inside the 5, there's something counter-intuitive about taking your best offensive weapon off the field when you're going for a touchdown.
Mr Trotter! On the bright side OU didn't have West Virginia's season.
Did Whaley ever recover from last seasons injury? Hopefully he gets his degree and is successful in life.
Whaley is someone to admire. He came out of nowhere last year, and that was a tribute to his persistence and work ethic. He worked incredibly hard to come back this year, but, like with Adrian Taylor a couple years ago, it's extremely to come back from a broken ankle. Especially for a running back. I wish Whaley the best.
I know the haters are silent majority but are the negative OU fans some of the worst in the country or what?
Nice username -- it's the same pretty much everywhere where the expectations are high.
what is the deal with the strength and conditioning coach, is Schimdty's regimen part of the reason for players losing spirit?
Hard to say. I've talked to former players who love Schmitty. And I've talked to ones that absolutely hate his guts. So, who knows how much of an impact his winter and summer program is having on guys leaving early.
Jake! You tell Toby it's apologist behavior like that that got us the years of Howard Schnellenberger and John Blake.
Any chance Jordan Phillips and Jordan Wade are starting DT's next year?
Will be either that, or one of them and Quincy Russell, the juco transfer.
What are the two most annoying things about covering OU? Unreasonable fans? Dry Press Conferences from Stoops? Being outshined by Pryzbylo?
Definitely the latter.
Jake, have you heard from any of my OLine recruits. Its January and I have zero commitments. Maybe we can bring back Mike Leach's "Ninja" offense and then we won't need tackles.
Kittle got a pretty good juco OT in Josiah St. John (No. 1 juco OT in the country). Christian Daimler is also committed and Kittle has a shot at Cochran, which would be a tremendous pull.
crazy thought, OU is only a few plays away from the national championship game tonight, both regular season losses easily could have turned out the other way unbelievable! .your prediction for the game tonight?
Right, but do you think OU would stand any chance against Alabama? I don't. I like Alabama, but I think it's close. Notre Dame is well coached, and that defense will keep them in the game if Golson plays like he did in Norman.
You made a good point about this past year's team 'not being built to run the ball', seems like the Sooner would run the ball out of charity sometimes. Do you see a change coming with a new QB under center?
The opportunity is there to make that transition with the new QB. I would expect them to go with more power sets next year, especially with Millard coming back.
Are all fans of top programs this whiny?I hear terms like rock bottom. Texas, USC, Florida, Ohio State, Florida State are other programs that have seen lower depths the last few years.
The one thing OU fans underappreciate is the consistency Stoops has had. Imagine being a fan of Texas three years ago, or USC this year.
Jake, concerning putting Bell in interrupts Jones rhythm. That all started when OU had way too many red zone field goals.
Fair point. That was last year, though. This offense was light years better than last years.
Have you ever totally flummoxed Stoops with a question at a press conference?
Probably, but that's six years worth of press conferences I'd have to think about. Most of them aren't worth thinking about at all.
Do you think wort should enter the draft since he is not geting as many snaps?
Which draft? Premier League?
Why is Jr. Day now postponed?
Sounds like they want to focus on the 2013 class instead of moving on to 2014. Lots of work still to do with this class.
Do you imagine any drastic changes coming after a season in which the defense was worse than last year and the offense seemed to stagnate in big games?
what should the defense have done differently last Friday, would blitzing have helped?
Maybe. It was pretty clear early that the game plan wasn't working. Give me 9 seconds in the pocket and I'm a decent bet to complete a pass. Then again, Manziel might have rushed for 426 yards instead of 226 if they had flushed him out of the pocket without any contain.
Jake, what do you think about what Spencer Tillman tweeted after the game, "Our play is disinterested and soft! Time to clean house!!!! This isn't Sooner Football! Sorry Sooner Nation!" Also, many tweets from Roy Williams and Gerald McCoy expressing frustrations with the program. Seems like former players might be putting pressure on Stoops.
Same thing happens immediately after any loss. Remember Brody Eldridge last year after Baylor? I don't put much stock into it.
It wouldn't surprise me if Treadwell goes to OSU. They seem really good at getting big fast physical NFL#1 type receivers.Does Metoyer have that potential? Or is he more in the posssion receiver Justin Brown/Kenny Stills type?
Metoyer definitely has No. 1 WR potential, but it's clearly going to take him a bit longer to get there than we first thought. OSU's track record with Blackmon and Bryant is pretty strong, and that's one reason why Treadwell is giving them a look.
Should we expect any other decommits? IE Dimon?
Dimon says he's solid OU. We actually went through the list today, and can't really see anyone else de-committing. Dimon is probably the most likely, considering that if Texas put on the full-court press, it might pique his interest.
Jake,Corey Nelson was a very good pass rusher in his first 2 seasons, would'nt it have been very advantages to use a "NASCAR package with him at end and two pass rushers (King, RJ and Chuka) to combat the speed of JM? When they brought the house, they had some success (sometimes got burned too) but they got burnt anyways give him 6 mississippi's to throw... I think Mike Stoops failed his test big time uOUr thoughts?
Mike did not have a good year, or a good Cotton Bowl. If you're going to give up 41 points, and the offense is beginning to stagnate, you might as well take some chances. OU didn't take any against Manziel, who simply sat back and picked them apart, or juked a guy and ran for daylight.
Any way that OU makes the NC game/playoffs in the next 3-5 years? I really can't see it happening..
Too far to project out. We just don't know. You can only really project next year, and even then, teams come out of nowhere. Maybe OU can be that team. Who knows?
Do we need a true OC? Does S&C coach Schmidt need to go?
Far as I can tell, Schmitty is untouchable, so it's not even worth discussing.
Jake, What is your take on OU's recruiting class? Can they get in the top 10?
Probably not. Top 15 is possible, though.
Is the sky really falling?
I just looked up, and I can confirm that it is not.
Has there been any consideration/thoughts to change the offense to more of a traditional pro-style like the days Adrian Peterson was lined up in the backfield?
Strangely, Stoops has been reluctant to say the offense is going to change much with a new QB. But they have to change the offense to fit Bell's (or Knight's or Thompson's) skill set. Plus, when you have the best FB in college football, you've got to use him, or at least more than OU has.
Losing two highly touted recruits to a "hot team" in the almighty sec is still unacceptable. Do you see us signing any quality defenders?
Baker is the best player on the board that the Sooners have the strongest chance at. An ESPN 300 guy, who would probably be a CB in Norman.
Jake. I appreciate the tough position you must be in, answering for all of OU's woes. I've been especially critical. Don't you think there has to be a significant change for there to be a positive outcome going forward. Part of OU's success over the years has been finding new and interesting people to help affect the program in a positive way. Sumlin, Norvell, Wilson, Mangino, Leach, and so on. Heupel, Kittles, Martinez, and Kish have been pretty bad. What's got to happen, in your mind?
People wanted the same thing last year, and Stoops obliged, bringing back his brother at the expense of Venables. Cleaning house year after year is not the answer. That leads to turmoil.
Premier League doesn't have a draft...
Fact error, my bad.
Umm USC lost Pete Carroll, Florida lost Urban Meyer, Texas whiffed on QBs (3). So given the continuity I think we fans expect a little more. We would expect swoons at those other universities. Are we really be unreasonable?
It's unreasonable to expect OU to win the title every year. In that context, look at what every other blue-chip program outside Bama and LSU has gone through at one point or another the last 10 years. That said, it's not unreasonable to expect OU to "contend" for a national title through October every 3 years. The last time OU did that now was 2008, which is too long given the tradition at OU.
"Jake, concerning putting Bell in interrupts Jones rhythm. That all started when OU had way too many red zone field goals."This years team had 4 reliable receivers and a good FB while last years had one receiver (Broyles being injured).... big diff
Any chance we just put Millard in the backfield and hand it to him more than Williams? How about running more pro sets with him at FB and giving him the ball more often as well as using him as a lead blocker...can also put him in motion and use him as a receiver. It just seems he is one of our best and rarely used...
I would. But I'm not holding my breath that will happen.
With Millard coming back, should we expect his typical 3-4 touches a game? Seriously, can he get the ball more...a lot more!?!?!
The OU staff has been saying that Millard would get 10-12 touches a game for two years now. Until I actually see it, I'm not believing they will.
If Stills goes early, what round does he get drafted in?
I'd guess 4th round.
You don't put any stock in what Spencer Tillman, Gerald McCoy, or Roy Williams say about the program? I think they'd know if something is amiss.
No, I put stock into what they say. Just not on Twitter during the actual game. Everyone tends to overreact in that setting. If those guys are willing to say the same things in August, that's a different story. I doubt that they would.
Forget the fans, do you think Bob Stoops wants to win another title or is he happy with what he's had the past 4 years?
Sure, he wants to win another title. But I find it interesting that's he quick to point out the good sides of his program after losses. There was no fire and brimstone during the Friday night press conference.
Maybe it's a blessing that OU didn't end up being a part of a Pac-16 conference. Could you really believe them competing against fast teams like Oregon, Stanford, USC, and UCLA?
Yeah, but they'd have something to offer recruits that would counter A&M's SEC pitch... "Come play for us. We go to Cali twice a year."
I am not too sure that Millard isn't our best RB..DD is explosive be he doesn't always hit the hole hard..
I am sure. Millard is OU's best RB.
Truth is, there are about 100 teams that would love to call a 10-win season a disappointment!
Thanks, Optimism. I'm sure the chat will appreciate your sunshine.
Even though you Cover the Oklahoma Sooners in College Football, What is your Fvaorite NFL Team?
Was a huge Miami Dolphins fan growing up when Marino was there, but now could care less. I root for my fantasy players.
It's not for me to judge the decisions Jefferson and Stills used for leaving early for the draft, but just from a football perspective, wouldn't both of them benefit from staying for one more year? Stills was good, but inconsistent w catching some critical passes, and Jefferson was a tackling machine, but seemed to struggle in coverage at times. Plus, Millard coming back, best news for OU this year so far.
Both could elevate their draft stock, no question. But there are other factors that go into these decisions. Some guys just want to be pros.
Come back, Jake...
Another off season full of what ifs and wth's for Sooner fans. Thanks for a good season of Sooner chat Jake, us fans appreciate you, Brandon, Bob, and Danes work. See ya next season, BOOMER!
The hour flew by. Sorry I couldn't get to all the questions -- there were a ton of them. We'll continue to do the SportsNation chat through the offseason, so I'll be here next Monday, same time, same place to get us to signing day. Everyone enjoy the national title game tonight. Or at least try to. Have a great week, too.
