Chat with Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (12:00 PM)

Hey Everyone! Let's get this playoff chat started!

cp (reno)

It seems to me that Harbaugh has gone conservative with Kap...No more runs or long balls...if he wasnt going to use his Strengths than he should have stayed with Smith? What do you think

Matt Williamson
  (12:02 PM)

I def do not think they should have stayed with Smith. I hear what you are saying, but it has also been a small sample size. I woud expect them to be run-first against the Pack, but I also don't tend to think that CK is incapable of handling more. If they get down, they will throw like crazy.

Rob (San Antonio)

Of all the home teams would you agree Atlanta has the biggest potential to lose and if they do what does that organization need to do to win a playoff game? Perhaps move away from the Atlanta curse.

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

I am picking all the home teams-except SF. So I don't agree with you. But there is certainly some chance that ATL does go down at home for sure. I think that Clemons injury is giant and I now worry that SEA can consistently get to Ryan. I expcet Lynch to have a huge day though. That should be a very tight game-and was the one I felt worst about picking.

Aggie (TX)

Thoughts on the Rob Ryan firing?

Matt Williamson
  (12:06 PM)

I heard today that he has only had one D finish in the Top 15 as a DC. That surprised me. With the additions of those CBs, I expected to see all sorts of exotic blitzes and pressures. That didn't seem to be the case, but I will say, that his ILB and Safety situation was really a difficult thing to overcome. Some talk now that Dallas could go to a 4-3. Not sure I love that either.

JD (Texas)

Based on last week's results did Wilson go back to number 1 for Rooks? Although his QBR was low due to his sacks; his Passer Rating was pretty solid compared to Luck's.

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

I know the stats don't bear it out, but I thought Luck outplayed Wilson last week. Wilson played fine-but got a ton of help. Luck started very slow, but then kept getting better and better. But in the end, like I have been saying most of the way, just more is asked of Luck. Totally his O.

Vinnie (NJ)

Us KC fans are as excited as if the team was in the playoffs. What's the word on DC for us under Reid? And will Reid sign Alberts as their LT, and draft Gino?

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

Should be excited. I don't know what the thoughts are at DC, but I would most def try to keep Alberts-thought he played great for most of the year. I need to do much more work on Gino, but that seems most logical. I know you can get a real strong starting QB (CK, Brees, etc) at the beginning of Round 2 or in a trade up back into Round 1, but I don't see a true #1 overall prospect that is a fantastic fit for KC...so, when in doubt, take Smith.

Trip (Jacksonville)

Are the Jags the team in the NFL with the least amount of talent?

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

Hmmm...Oakland comes to mind, but I think I gotta go with JAX

Michael [via mobile]

Was Andy Dalton's first half in Houston as bad as it seems? 4/11 3 yds!

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

Was pretty horribe. Didn't throw to AJ Green once! That being said, that supporting cast-I am talking to you J Gresham-didn't step up one bit. Not a big Dalton guy here

Cody (Phoenix)

How do the Cards get better? Drop Kolb for Alex Smith?

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

How about Vick? And then draft a guy too? It didn't get a lot of publicity, but their terrible OL got better as the season went along and those rookie OTs clearly improved. They also get Levi Brown back. So maybe they do something like this: Sign Vick or Smith or keep Kolb, draft a QB in round 1 and go OL after that or in free agency

Randy (Grove, OK)

Should the Chiefs resign Dwayne Bowe? I think he has played pretty well even with a garbage QB. How much can he help a young QB?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

I tend to think he is gone. I keep hearing Miami. Very good WR-no doubt, but I also bet he makes more than he deserves. Outside of QB, WR might be KC's biggest need.

Julius (Atlanta)

I'm sure I now why, but why are you picking GB? What reasons, Rogers and Woodson back?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

Mostly on the shoulders of Rodgers-he has been simply amazing. And yes, GB is quite healthy now, particularly at WR and DB. I have my doubts as to how healthy J Smith really is-and this is two different Ds with and without him. Still, AR will take some hits.

SC (MN)

Matt- What were your thoughts on Minnesota's Playcalling with Joe Webb?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

Really tough to play call well when your QB really can't even complete a pass-and everyone in the stadium knew it by half time.

Xander (Philly)

The Bills need another solid WR to compliment Stevie Johnson (who had another 1,000 yard year even though Fitz stunk and the rest of the WRs stunk worse). Which free agent would be the best fit?

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

They certainly do. And outside of QB, that is prob their biggest need. Jennings would be awesome there. But I was just scanning the list-and didn't see a wonderful fit. Maybe go WR high in draft.

Tarek (NYC)

If you were the Raiders would you try and see what you can get for McFadden and DHB? They have plenty of young WR's and need dept in general.

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

Would shop both, but esp McF. Expensive. Injured all the time. Might be time to move on and could be best for McF as well. I still think DHB is gradually improving each season.

Brian (Philly)

Do you think Nnamdi's play could translate well to safety? If the Eagles end up signing Lovie it doesn't seem like Nnamdi is a great fit for a corner in the Cover 2.

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

He is not a great fit as a Cover 2 CB-you are right. At FS? Maybe. But that is a more difficult transition than many realize. Really teaching an old dog new tricks-and he was a one trick pony to begin with. Also, is he a good enough tackler/hitter? I have my doubts.

cp (reno)

Pittsburgh De might grade out as a top defense but if you watch them they have nobody who can get to the QB...what do you think they do in the draft?

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

Well said. Improving the pass rush is def their top priority-both at DE and OLB. Need an influx of young talent on D. And this offseason would almost be entirely about D for me in PGH

John (Wisc)

DuJuan Harris - Packers best mid season pickup since Andre Rison?

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

Gotta like him for sure. Real fresh legs for this time of the year. I like him as a reciever. Runs with a lot of juice. Not bashful at all. Certainly a find, even if just for the short term.

robb (south dakota)

how great is Von Miller going to be over the next 10 years. He is already a beast.

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

Hall of Famer type

Blueman (Indy)

Jake Long is getting a lot of talk as a top FA.Is it a giant red flag that a young and improving team is willing to let go a guy at a position that weak in the NFL right now. This combined with the fact that he will make top 5 money at his position on the open market should he be a guy that a GM should say no thanks to?

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

When right, I love Long. But injuries have been a huge issue with him-and I wonder if this is the beginning of the end for him. Is he breaking down? I do a weekly radio hit in Miami and we talk about that subject a lot. I always say that MIA's doctors know more about him than anyone-and with Long, it all comes down to health, particularly long term. If MIA lets him walk, I bet they don't trust his body to hold up.

cp (reno)

All signs seem to point Wallace won't be back with Pittsburgh but letting him go for nothing would be a huge mistake...What would you do if you were them?

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

Could Franchise him and trade him on the cheap I guess. That would be great to at least get someting for him, but I don't know what the cap situation is. Can they afford to Franhise a guy that they don't plan on bringing back?

derek (cleveland)

The same miami doctors that let brees walk?

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

Not sure if they are the same docs or not!

Joe (uk)

Ignoring the QBs who has the best team denver or new england?

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

Wow, tough one. I certainly like the Pats' O personnel better-and I like the Broncos' D better.

B (NC)

Will Justin Tuck ever be an impact player again?

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

Like Long, I fear he is another guy whose body just won't ever be the same. Also nicked up with something and it clearly affects his impact ability.

Sleepless (Seattle)

Why all the hate for the Seahawks? There on a roll. I since they will destroy the Falcons.

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

Hate? In the preseason I picked them to win the NFC West, for Carroll to be Coach of the Year and for Wilson to be Rookie of the Year. Huge Hawks guy here-picked them to win last week. Just think they lose a very close game on the road to a fresher team. Hate?

John (Boston)

Lots of writers here in New England are giving Houston no shot Sunday, but are the Patriots really so far removed from being shredded by sub par qb's (Fitz and Wilson in his first 5 games come to mind) that Schaub can't light them up? Is Talib that good? Thanks

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

The Pats secondary overall is far better. I don't love the pass rush, but by playing all those young guys early, I think BB has a great feel now for what they all can do-and they now have about 7 or 8 guys that BB can throw out there at CB or S. Adding Talib was big for sure, esp for a game like this against a team that has a clear #1 WR. I don't give the Texans much of a chance to win and I don't think Schaub has much of a chance to shred them.

JD (Texas)

With Clemon's injury do you think Seattle now goes Pass Rusher in Round 1 of the draft or OL or WR?

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

They don't have a ton of needs. I have been saying that I would really look to adding a big mashing RT/OG type guy to that OL. Adding another pass rusher certainly isn't a bad idea-ever. And yes, one more weapon would be nice. Best athlete available.

TT (Portland)

If Denver and NE win, AFC Championship is going to be absolute must see, right?

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

Reminds me of those games in the early 90s between Aikman's Cowboys and Young's 49ers...for all the marbles!!!

robb (south dakota)

If you Denver do you look for another rb in the draft or do you hope mcgahee stays healthy and moreno actually did find his groove

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

I still think they should have high hopes for Hillman, possibly as the feature RB next year. Between him and Moreno/McGahee and possibly a physical 4th or 5th round pick, DEN should be fine at the position.

Sam (Nashua, NH)

They called those games between the Cowboys and 49ers the Superb Bowl.

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

Actually never heard that...but that is excellent

Falco (Miami)

Does Miami just low ball Bush, they've got good backup options if he doesn't resign. Better than overpaying him.

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

Yup...and I bet Bush moves on. He played well though. I like Miller quite a bit.

Michelle (OK)

If Long walks do you seem Bears picking him up or making run

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

They would HAVE to at least kick the tires right? Maybe J Long's future is at RT?

Paul (Denver)

Please list top priorities for Emery and the Bears.

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

OL, OL, LB, OL, WR/TE

John (Wisc)

How scary would Bush be in Green Bay?

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

Was just thinking that! Great minds John! Great minds! Use him as a RB/WR hybrid type. They have the QB and coaching staff to use him properly-like they did in NO.

Letty (Cali)

Do you have a tattoo of your wife wearing a cowboy hat, smoking a cigarette, and saying "I'm your huckleberry"?

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

No...it says "You're No Daisy. You're No Daisy At All!"

Tarek (NYC)

Den vs NE would be a must see but so is this Saturday's GB at 49ers. Winner is clearly the favorite to win NFC.

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

Agreed...I am picking the Pack to emerge from the NFC

Frank (Chi)

So your saying the Bears probably need some help on the O Line?

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

I think that would be a pretty good idea...just my Two Cents

Brian (Philly)

What would you do with the Eagles' pick? OT? DE (or is Graham good enough)? LB? Or just best available?

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

Graham is def good enough. A stud OT would be great-esp if Peters isn't fully recovered. But that OL-when healthy, is top notch. But Herremans could also move to OG. Safety is their biggest need and from what I understand, this is a very strong and deep Safety draft. QB?

Raoul Duke (Upstate NY)

Rogers is playing great, but the big difference is that Raji has been dominating the middle of the line.

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

Rodgers is playing better than anyone in the league-which is a massive statement. But Great point on Raji. Such a force when he is "On". Show me what you got, what you got, Raji!

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Do you think Adrian Peterson and Peyton Manning will split MVP and Comeback Player of Year honors?

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

I would vote Peterson as MVP and Peyton as Comeback. How about J Charles though? SUPER strong Comeback candidate...but has no chance.

Harry (MN)

Ed Reed to NE after the year? We know of the mutual respect between them.

Matt Williamson
  (12:40 PM)

McCourty as turned into a heck of a FS though. I just have this hunch that Reed hangs it up after this season.

Brett (Great Northwest)

If (When) ATL loses to Seattle Sunday... will ATL be in the market for a new head coach?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

No way Man

chris (Houston)

The pats beat the jets 45-3 and were supposed to steam roll the jets again in the playoffs a few years back, the jets won 28-21....i think its foolish for pats fans to assume they are going to win, do you agree?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

I understand that, but I just think NE is a terrible matchup for Houston-and clearly the better and fresher team

Ed (NY, NY)

Agree that 9ers needs in the offseason are:DE/OLB, DT, S, Kicker?

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

Yes, esp if Goldson goes. Might need a true speed WR too though. Didn't seem like a need, but Manningham is injured and Moss could be done. What do they have in Jenkins?

John (Wisc)

My guess is that the Chiefs bring in a veteran QB. Do they go get Vick or do they bring someone else in? Matt Flynn...

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

Bet they bring in vet QB. Flynn makes a lot of sense. But also uses a pick in 1st or 2nd round on QB.

SteveB (Ohio)

Is this the worst year in recent history to have the No 1 overall Pick? With no clear cut No 1 out there even trading the pick wont bring much. Just take the best guy out there that fits your biggest need and hope for the best?

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

Things will get much clearer in the coming months, but it seems that way now. But maybe you can move down just a few spots so a team gets the right fit for their team. For example if an early team LOVES Star L, you move back a handful of spots.

Sharell (Raleigh, NC)

If and (When) SEATTLE lose on Sunday, what should they do with Flynn? Will anyone trade for him. #Falcons

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

From what I understand, his contract isn't unreasonable. But if you recall, Flynn hung out there for a while and teams were not swarming to him last offseason. And it isn't like his stock has skyrocketed since then. Still, someone brings him in to hold down the fort, but SEA also doesn't HAVE to move the guy.

John (Georgia)

So is GB in your opinion going to win close, 3 to 7 points, or more like 10+

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Close, I have a lot of respect for SF

Mike (Cohoes)

What do you think the Titans big needs in the offseason are...S, OL?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

A dominant interior OLineman would be fantastic, but other than that, the D needs a lot of attention. They have a lot of pretty good players, but that D lacks star power. Feel like it would be so much better with a Pro Bowl addition-really at any position. But Safety is def weak.

Trip (Jacksonville)

Can MJD come back to his old form?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Perhaps...he seems like a great candidate to move on from JAX though....ATL?

Chewy tomatoes (missing)

I think too many are underestimating Atlanta. They won a lot of games......Most of those were close.....That means they don't panic and know how to pull out the win.....

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

I tend to agree, which if why I am picking them. I think Ryan is legit and they are well coached. But I don't love how they run the ball or how they stop the run.

Tom (NYC)

Had to laugh at Rex and Woody talking about how the Jets are going to be "dangerous" next year. Are the completely in denial about the joke of a team they fielded this year? Sanchez will be back after all.

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

They say a lot of things.

Trip (Jacksonville)

MJD has another year left with the Jags..... Are you suggesting the new GM might CUT MJD?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

No...maybe trade him for a 3rd round pick or so instead of letting him walk after the year. Total rebuild.

Dave (Leonard)

Matt Ryan has never won a playoff game...Joe Flacco has won multiple playoff games. Who would you rather have?

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

Ryan...by far

Sharell (Raleigh, NC)

Is it crazy to suggest that although they were playoff teams, VIKINGS and BENGALS should have competition at QB position? Do anyone really believe Dalton and Ponder can take their teams to Superbowl? How good would VICK be in MINNESOTA?

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

Agreed on the QBs. I still like Ponder, but need to bring in some sort of competition. But who? I hear ya on Vick-maybe. But I think Vick will be in quite the demand actually. So who? Maybe use your 2nd rounder on a QB perhaps?

Tom (NYC)

Expecting Brady to spread that Houston d out again and carve them to pieces?

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

Yes, or keep them in base D and abuse their ILBs with Gronk and Hernandez

Brian (Tampa)

With $47M in cap room, could you sign off on the Colts going after Mike Wallace if he comes available? I know most would like more size outside, but can't the Colts get that through their TEs?

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

I think they have much bigger needs (OL and the entire D) than WR, but Arians (if he is still there) is obviously very familar with Wallace. And playing in a dome with a team that throws deep more than anyone is a good fit. I keep picturing Wallace in Minny though. Think Peterson would appreciate that?

Tarek (NYC)

Is it crazy that Cowboy fans want to get rid of Romo? Try having Sanchez, Palmer, Cassell, Gabbert etc... at QB.

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

Exactly....crazy talk. But Romo isn't young. Using a 2nd or 3rd round pick on the position could be logical.

Blueman (Indy)

What is the market value for Dwight Freeney? Just a nickel pass rush guy or can he still play DE for another 2-3 years as a full time player?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

I would stay somewhere in between. Not what he once was-and he was so reliant on his amazing get-off and closing speed, which will dwindle. But he is still effective.

Dom (NH)

Any chance of a Ravens upset?

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

Sure. But not seeing it. I think they are overmatched in just about every way.

Jeff (Nashville )

How good would MJD look in Green and Gold?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

Not their style, but GB and ATL were the teams that came to mind

Dave (Columbia, MD)

Matt, Apparently the Ravens have absolutely no shot at winning this week. But seriously, you picked the Colts to go into M&T Bank Stadium and beat teh Ravens on Ray Lewis' last home game? Come on, the black and gold blood in your veins must have been running wild last week.

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

Perhaps. Was very torn on last week's game. Balt was/is the better team, but I fully expected Indy to hit on some long balls. And they attempted very few. Protection was an issue, but I have a hunch that is Arians were calling plays, the Colts would have taken many more Shot Plays.

Rob (San Antonio)

Where does Indy go in next years draft - Oline to protect Luck?

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

OG, OC and pretty much everywhere on D...no 2nd round pick, but tons of cap $$$

PT (Franklin, NC)

Is it possible for the Raiders to get a 2nd round pick for DMC?

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Seems a little rich

Brett (Ottawa)

Who would you rather have for the next 5 years Stephon Gilmore, Casey Hayward or Janoris Jenkins? And can any of these guys reach say Joe Haden level?

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

For this year, I would rank them 1. Hayward 2. Jenkins 3. Gilmore, but for the long term, I would totally invert that list. Rarely do rookie CBs come in and play great. Gilmore will really imrpove.

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

Folks, I am out! Adios!
