Chat with Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:00 PM)

Hi everyone, let's get rolling.

Vijay (Nashville)

Hi Bill. Excited for the game on Saturday! Do you agree that the key for the Broncos making a Super Bowl run is turnovers? It seems like all season the only consistent problem the Broncos have had is fumbling all too often.

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Nothing unravels a postseason game like turnovers. Denver's backs have had some issues, but so has Ravens' tailback Ray Rice. So, holding onto the ball, especially in cold wetaher, will be paramount.

Hawkeye-X (Denver)

How much of an impact do you think the cold weather will have on Manning and his Glove[tm]?

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

I don't see a problem. He was fine in the last two games. Unless the weather is totally brutal -- Flacco will be affected then, as well -- I don't see a big issue.

Mike (San Diego)

I would love the Raiders to trade out of number 3 spot. Do you see anything willing to trade down for elite Defense of player?

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

That stuff will be settled in the coming months. It all depends if a team falls in love with a certain player. The problem is there are a lot of top defensive players, so teams will have options and will be less apt to feel the need to make a deal.

Lonzell B [via mobile]

Should cheifs hire rob ryan as DC

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

He could be on the list. But I'm not sure if he'd be the answer. But this is a huge deal for Reid. He has to get this hire right. It's his most important hire.

JB (Roseville, CA)

What offensive coordinator options out there right now seem like the most logical fit for the Raiders? With the firing of Mike Mularkey I would throw his name into the hat along with Norv Turner. But a couple college options are intriguing as well, such as Pep Hamilton or Jeff Tedford.

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

Mularkey could be a guy, sure. I think this is going to be a slow process. Allen is taking his time. The OC market is just getting going. I know there haven't been many names out there and that's how Allen wants it. As for Turner, I don't really see that fit.

Randy (Wausau, WI)

Any idea of who Andy Reid is looking at for his assistant coaches (big names?)....

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

Strong rpeorts that his Philly QB coach Doug Pederson is his top choice for OC. Brad Childress' name has come up and Monte Kiffin's name has been talked about a lot, But I think there will be other candidates.

Ben Dickson (Albuquerque, New Mexico)

Do you see the Chiefs drafting a linebacker or offensive tackle in the first round and picking Tyler Wilson in the second?

Bill Williamson
  (2:15 PM)

Yes, I think you are on the rigth track. I can see a QB such as Wilson being a target in the second round.

Brandon (Charlotte, NC)

Hey Bill, Moreno had a great game against Baltimore last time they played but that was without the likes of Lewis, Pollard, and a few other key defensive players. How do you see his production panning out this weekend this second time around?

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

I think Denver will give him the first crack, but Hester and Ball will also be in the plan. It doens't master how Denver gets the yards just as long as they get them.

Brandon (Charlotte, NC)

Hey Bill, realistically how many personnel awards do you see the Broncos getting at the end of the year? Manning seems to be the sure pick for MVP but do you seem Miller getting the DPOY and possibly Fox and Elway getting awards as well?

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

Manning is in play for MVP, OPOY and Comeback. He'll get something, maybe two.I think Miller will place second to JJ Watt for DOPY.Elway coudl win Execuitve of the year.Fox will get soem votes, but Pagano/Arians win COY.

Manny (Philadelphia)

What do you think of Manning's failure in cold weather conditions? Do you think it would affect the Broncos this Saturday?

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

The big thing is those struggles came on the road. Being cold at home is a different feeling.

Matt (Steinway)

Am I seriously the only Broncos fan who is worried by Peyton's 2-3 record coming off a bye week in the divisional round? I still the Broncos will win, but certainly not in blowout fashion like many of my orange-and-blue comrades predict.

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

It's the playoffs, it's time to freak out about EVERYTHING.I agree with you. I think Denver wins, but I'm not sure it will be a runaway.

Chris (Calgary, AB)

Bill,Are the Bronco's the front runners next year? Do you see Andy Reid making a significant difference in KC sans his caliber of assistant coaches?

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

Peyton Manning is under contract. Yes, Denver will be the frontrunner.

Luke (Denver)

What are the odds of Denver keeping both of its coordinators, McCoy and Del Rio, into next year? Which one is more likely to land somewhere else?

Bill Williamson
  (2:32 PM)

I think the odds are McCoy will leave more than Del Rio. Del Rio's names haven't popped up for a head-coaching job. He may have to wait a year. If Denver makes the Super Bowl, it will be interesting to see if any team will wait for him. Some people think Arizona might wait for him.

Enrique (San Diego, CA)

Congrats to Tom Telesco, looking forward to what he can do for our organization! He mentioned he was going to decide what he wants to do offensively and defensively, does this mean there's a chance we switch to a 4-3 D?

Bill Williamson
  (2:34 PM)

I like the hire ... As far as the 4-3, 3-4. I can see the defensive staff being kept and all systems go. The defense is not a problem there.

Keith from San Diego [via mobile]

hi Bill, last night Taylor Lewan said he was staying at Michigan rather than going into the draft and was wondering how badly that hurts the Chargers chances of getting a good left tackle in April

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

I mentioned it a blog today. I don't think it is a killer, but it does leesen the pool.

Brandon (Charlotte, NC)

Hey Bill, Von Miller turned out to cause a lot of Havoc for Flacco a few weeks ago when the Broncos and Ravens played. With the Ravens changing up their OL rotation, how do you see his production panning out this weekend?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

I think Miller will be unleashed as will the entire Denver paass-rush attack. I see it as a huge key.

Michelle (Cincinnati)

After this disasterous 4 years in which the head coaches never did well and in which the QB situation was awful has Scott Pioli lost all credability as a front office personal in this league?

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

I think he still he has a place in the league. It may not easy for him to be hired as a G.M. anywhere reak soon. i think there could be a place for him in Atlanta's front office if he wants it.

AJ (Oakland)

Bill, how could you not see Turner being a fit in Oakland? He loves to stretch the field with speed guys and run hard between the tackles. Raiders personnel is perfect for that.

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

I am not sure he would want to go back there. He was already there. But money talks.

jason hershey, pa [via mobile]

Do you see a scenario where oakland could acquire a d. bowe or greg jennings?

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

They have young receivers they need to develop and they don't ahve much money.

Noah (Hollywood)

What do the Raiders have to do to get better next year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

Improve in nearly every area of the team, especially on defense. Need more talent.

dan (milwaukee)

BW,How about a little love from my alma mater John Carroll, the tiny D3 Jesuit outfit from the Cleve. Three alums running NFL Teams...Tom Telesco, Dave Caldwell and Nick Caserio in New England....not to mention London Fletcher and Josh McDaniels...and now Greg Roman eyeing a HC gig.

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

And it all started with Don Shula. I was tlaking to my bosses about that yesterday. Incredible.

Patrick (Indianapolis)

How many years do you think Peyton has in him do you think he will play out his contract or be done in 2-3 years.

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

He will be 37 in March, but he has shown he is healthy and still in his prime. I can see him playing, at elast, two more seasons.

Nick (Syracuse)

Who should the Broncos target on draft day?

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

Probably the best available defensive player in the first round.

Jacob (San Diego)

In your opinion if the Chargers would have gone on to beat the Broncos on that Monday Night game would the season have been different? That just seemed to burn them and they never did recover from that.

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

It's a great question. That nigth changed everything for both teams.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Bill, who do you think are the leading candidates for the Chargers' head coaching position?

Bill Williamson
  (2:48 PM)

I think Bruce Arians and Lovie Smith will be closely looked at.

AJ (Oakland)

If KC lands a QB in the draft like Seattle did with Wilson, could you see them contending overnight?

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

They probably should have taken last year. That's on Pioli.

AJ (Oakland)

Why is the Oak brass so against just giving play calling duties to Al Saunders? The Raiders were explosive under the system he and Hue Jackson were running and with less talent at tthe QB position.

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

Good quesiton. He knows the personnel and he has been part of some success there. I think he is worth looking at.

Johnny (Denver)

What kind of strides has Rahim Moore made this year? Has he answered the critics?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

He's come on strong. Give him a lot od credit. he was criticized pretty big last year.

Nick (Syracuse)

How much longer could Champ Bailey possibly have left?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

I'd say, at least, two years. He doing well.

AJ (Oakland)

Should SD consider bringing in Hue Jackson as OC or even coach? Look at the production he got out of Jason Campbell and think of what he could do with Rivers?

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

Jackson would love it. I'm not sure he will get any head-coaching looks this year, but he should be an OC. It's a waste not having him be an OC somewhere.

Jesse (Sacramento, CA)

What are the odds the Raiders draft Manti Teo'? I think he fills that leadership role they desperately need.

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

I think there are some key people there who like him and I think he will be considered. But I think there are some pass-rushers who will be closely watched as well.

Brenden (Fargo, ND)

In your recent writings you said that Denver has the most salary cap space. Do you see them making another splash in free agency or trying to keep what they have and save cap space for the futre?

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

They could make a spalsh, but they've been pretty conservative in free agency.

Bonnie (St. Bonaventure, NY)

Bill:How do you see the Chiefs' two headed running attack (with Charles and Hillis) playing with Ried? I can see Charles excelling if Ried uses him like he did Westbrook, but I see Hillis as an odd man out. Agree?

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

Maybe. Hillis is a free-agent. I don't think he is a done deal to stay.

AJ (Oakland)

Could you see SD going after a big name WR FA to help Rivers?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

I think they need so much help, they need to spread the cap money throughout the offense.

Vaughn (Philly)

Everyone has already penciled in a Patriots-Broncos matchup for the AFC Championship Game but just how tough of a matchup would the Texans be for them? I do know one thing, the Texans would not be afraid of playing in Denver since they did go there and win earlier in the season.

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

Hosuton wouldn't be easy, but it's a better matchup than New England for Denver.

G from Denver [via mobile]

Bill, are you going to be out here on Sunday and freeze with the rest of us? GO BRONCOS!!!!

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

No, I'll be freezing Saturday.

Bill Williamson
  (3:02 PM)

Great Hour, folks. Enjoy the playoffs. Tlak to you nexdt week.Benjamin from Boulder, send me a note to my mailbag and I'll get back to you.
