Hey guys and gals! Let's chat!
Heh Andrea do we have to suffer thru bb? Can't we just start the next season of football now!!!
Wait, you are in Louisville, are you suffering through a hoops season?
You heard it here first, UMAss will be the next school invited to the Big East. UMass vs UConn will be a nice rivalry.
Well, I heard something similar in Andy Katz's column a few days ago ...
Andrea!! What can I say? I'm sorry Bridgewater's coming out party had to come to the Florida Gators, but he is a God among men. Am I crazy to think that 2013 may be the first year the Heisman race is over in September? Next year they may rename it the Bridgewater Trophy and then I can start calling him TEDDY BRIDGEWATER again instead of TEDDY HEISMAN?.
Is this the real you or is somebody tricking me? It is hard to tell! No apologies, Louisville was the better team and impressed me and everybody who tuned in. I am sorry to tell you, the Heisman race is never over in September. If it was, Geno Smith would have won the Heisman this year! And we all saw how this season turned out for him ...
I know there has been some confusion, but when will the coverage of the football programs at the University of Pittsburgh and Syracuse University be moved over to the ACC Blog? Thank you very much in advance for your answer.
We have not set a date yet for the official move over. When I know, I will be more than happy to let you all know. For now, Pitt and Syracuse remain on the Big East blog.
Does uconn intend to interview anyone else to be the new OC?
I read a report that a Cincinnati assistant interviewed, but I am not sure what will happen with that job since DeLeone says he is staying.
Hey Andrea, has there been any news on San Diego States decision on weather they are going to go Big East or Mountain West?
No news on that front.
What are you hearing about Rolovich backing out as Temple OC??? Just as I started to get excited about it too...
Sounds as if Nevada gave him more $$ to stay, he is expecting twins and I think his family is just happy there and the increased financial stability had him changing his mind.
Any knowledge on who the next OC will be at Syracuse?
Nothing yet on that front, I am sure Coach Shafer will get plenty of those questions tomorrow during his press conference.
I'm shocked - no Rutgers players on the BE all-bowl offense? They did score 3 points, after all. There needs to be an investigation!
It was tough leaving Gary Nova off ...
Do expect ECU to get an all-sports invite in the Big East soon? Aresco has mentioned the possibility.
I think it would make sense if that happened given the hoops schools leaving, but I do not know when/if that is the case.
Andrea - Being a Syracuse fan, I've heard enormous buzz about Zach Allen being an elite QB recruit and his Elite 11" status. Yet the recruiting guru's only seem to deem him worthy of 3 stars. How do you rate him?
That is a question for our recruiting experts. My sole focus is on players who are in college. I do not rate high school prospects. If I did, I would have no time to eat or sleep :)
Happy New Year Andrea. Do you have any information on where SMU and Houston will play football next year?
Until I hear otherwise, Big East.
What's the latest on Pep Hamilton (Stanford) becoming the new OC for the Hokies?? I know he met with Beamer on Monday.
They met a few times, no updates on that yet.
Andrea, I am baffled by the new DC hire at USF? Chuck Bresnahan does not seem like a good choice as far as I can tell...
The choice came out of left field for me as well, considering he does not have much recent college experience or recruiting ties to the area. We heard some other names thrown around for the position, so I do not have all the details on how the hire went down. We will hear from Coach T when he completes his staff so until then, I am reserving judgment.
Sorry Cards fans, Teddy B won't be winning the heisman next year not with Johnny Football and Top 5 Texas A&M gunning for a national championship and possibly Jaedeveon Clowney (sp?) possibly becoming the most dominant college defensive player since...EVER!
That hit in the Outback Bowl is still ringing in my ears.
Thank you for your prompt response. I'm sorry to continue to ask, but do you believe the University of Pittsburgh and Syracuse University will be moved over to the ACC blog prior to the their official July 1 entry date?
In the past, we have made the transition before July so my guess would be yes, but I do not have an exact date.
I thought it over. The Big East can have San Diego State.
San Diego State may not have a choice if the MWC does not want it back.
Tyler and A.A USF's DC hire is genius. It allows us to tell recruits that we have a DC who knows the NFL(What it takes to get to the NFL, What it takes win or lose). Lots of upswing witth this hire.
I can see that, especially since Coach T is such a strong recruiter with deep ties to the area.
Hello Madame Big Guns. I wanted to get your thoughts on what was talked about after the Sugar Bowl. Most of the "experts" that said the Cards had no chance all agreed that the only reason they won was because Florida was disinterested. As if being disinterested to play in a BCS bowl game is a badge of honor. None of these experts were ripping into UF but rather making excuses for their poor play and giving them a free pass. As a UofL fan it was infuriating. I'm fine with people picking against them in the game. In all honesty I thought they'd have a tough time hanging in there, but can't these guys (ahem*herbstreit*ahem) just admit that they were wrong?
Nic, I had a different take on that actually. I thought far more people gave Louisville credit than making excuses for Florida. The overriding thing to me was the way they continually praised Teddy Bridgewater. I am not going to sit here and comment on every comment made on TV, because I cannot answer for those guys. I can only answer for myself. And in my view, Louisville won that game.
How would you talk SU fans off the ledge after loseing Marrone and OC Hackett?
Are they on the ledge? These are the same Syracuse fans who wanted Marrone out after a 2-4 start and a completely disjointed offense!
IF SDSU does back out of the Big East, does the conference have a back up schedule so that teams aren't scrambling?
If that happens and 10 teams remain, then my thinking is they are still able to play an eight-game league schedule as originally planned, right?
Open question for the chat: Ivan Maisel pointed out that after the Catholic 7 leave, there's no reason for the BE to be headquarted in Providence. Where would you all want to see them move to?
Dangerous question Bob ...
Your thoughts on SU's hiring of Scott Shafer as Head coach? Was it too safe a pick?
It was a safe pick, no question, but making hires in January is vastly different than making hires in December. Syracuse does not have the time to conduct a nationwide search, with signing day closing in and recruits already growing restless. Stability is the key, and that is why the decision was made.
When will you interview SU's Scott Shafer as you do all new hires?
How long will the SEC keep winning and when are the other conferences going to step up a level?
Great question. Is there nobody out there willing to take on this challenge, for the good of college football?? Anyone? Bueller?
A.A happy late New year! Was at the USF BB game last night spoke with someone high up about the BE Expansion. Was told that the thought is SDSU will still come to the BE and Fresno is the main target. Thoughts and do you know any more to add? Thanks keep up the good work
Same to you! I am not surprised to hear that, considering Mike Aresco has said he anticipates San Diego State will stay. Fresno would make the most sense, but I am not sure what would be in it for Fresno to leave and have the same arrangement as San Diego State.
Ok Andrea, you've dodged this question for the past three weeks, but you seem to like my comments so i'll try it again...hypothetically speaking I'm a UConn fan, I'm secretly waiting for my invite to the ACC (ok maybe not so secretly)...should I be concerned that another future Big East team is going to steal my seat at the table...no not talking about USF...OR UCF! The US Naval Academy...for three reasons 1) Annual Rival of the Prize Notre Dame, 2)Has a National following, is a prestigous institution and has a somewhat solid football program and 3) gets the ACC back into the DC Market with loss of Maryland (ok maybe thats a stretch)...I'm a UConn fan, I'm thinking we'll be staying in the Big East for a long time..
I have dodged this question? Hmm I do not remember dodging this question. Anyway, I understand your fears and concerns about somebody else taking your seat at the ACC table. I just have no idea if Navy is higher up on the pecking order. If that makes me a question dodger, so be it. But you should also be looking at Cincinnati ...
BOB, BE should move their Headquaters to Sunny FLA(Esp since UCF and USF) will be the anchor prorgrams. Much better meeting destination as well.
How did you come about the nickname "Big Guns"?
A good friend of mine in Orlando started calling me that because I "tell it like it is."
What are your most important storylines for the upcoming off season?
Louisville, Louisville, Louisville. Bridgewater Heisman campaign.Tubs in Year 1 at Cincinnati.Which of the incoming teams will have the best season?
Andrea-would you keep Nova as a starter in 2013 or give the keys to a redshirt freshman Rankin? I doubt Dodd will stick around as even an option?
I would hold another open QB competition this spring and fall. Can't give the keys of the offense to a freshman who has not played without having him win the job.
If the "Basketball 7" end up taking the Big East name with them, what should the remaining football schools call themselves? Any ideas??
Conference USA? Oh. Wait. That is taken.
With Boise and possibly SDSU not coming to the Big East, is Houston the favorite to have the best season among the new comers next season?
All American Confernce or "Big Gun" Conference
i heard the Metro Conference name is still available...
There seems to be some confusion about the SDSU deal. When I read into the deal it just seems as though the school (SDSU) needs to say they want back in. I point to the fact that recent reports state that SDSU has not made a decision on its conference placement according to the BE Commissioner.
That is correct, San Diego State has not made a decision.
Instead of the Catholic 7 the one i heard and liked was the "Big Priest"
What SDSU would like is some stability ... the MWC is now a conference of Boise St. and the 10 dwarfs -- a disaster waiting to happen when the first checks come out and BSU gets $4 mil and the others all get $750K - $1 mil. The BCS AQ bid is worth more in 1 game than the current MWC CBS contract is worth annually.
That is what I mentioned in a previous post -- San Diego State may very well earn more $$ as part of the Big East.
Louisville is your big story next year? Thought it would be the QB competition at PITT. Go figure. Any hoo, any update on any Defensive Coordinators interviewing at PITT?
That is an ACC story line! No update on DCs.
Do you think SDSU chooses to stay in the BE? Seems like the only reason why Boise stayed was the better deal over TV. SDSU will not get that deal so they may feel that the BE is better because they seem to hate the MWC culture.
I think the reason we have no decision is they have to weigh the financial ramification. We have no idea what the BE is going to get from its TV deal but you are right, San Diego State is not getting what Boise got in the MWC. That may be the deciding factor.
Glad to see that Cincinnati was left off of everybody's too early Top 25 lists again. That way we can play the no respect card again. Seriously is it possible for a program to do more and get less love from the media than the Bearcats get? Thank you for at least picking us second to the Bridgewaters.
There is no program that does more and gets less love from the media. None.
With Brandon Kay receiving a sixth year and his performance in the Belk Bowl, is it safe to assume that the starting job at Cincinnati is his to lose next year? Would you agree that is pocket presence and arm strength fit Tommy T's offensive playbook? Is there any chance Cincinnati moves Munchie to another offensive/defensive position?
I believe Kay should go into the year as the starter, but any time you have a new coach, there are no guarantees. Cincinnati has a stockpile of talent at the position so it will be interesting to see how Tubs handles the competition during the spring. I believe Kay has earned the right to start again. If I was Cincinnati, I would try and move Munchie. He has got some incredible talent, but accuracy is not one of them.
Ok Andrea, I have to call you out now. Others have said this to you previously and I need to pile it on...your answer "I have no idea if Navy is higher up on the pecking order" is not a good answer in chat...mostly, we aren't asking you for your "knowledge" so much as your opinion...if I wanted a knowledgeable answer to this question, I'd try to get in touch with someone in the Big East office (good luck to me)...as a blogger, you give Opinions...so yes you are dodging the question, by not giving an opinion, just saying that you have no "knowledge"...look at it this way, if you were the ACC Commissioner and had this decision, wouldnt you be more interested in Navy rather than UConn for the reasons I listed? Opinions...not definitive answers Andrea...sorry, I had to point this out...
Navy is not going to join as an all-sports program, so no I would not be more interested in Navy.
Tommy Tuberville has been trahsed by the media since his suprise move to UC. There are articles out now that will somewhat clear his name. He didnt leave the recruiting dinner early according to another recruit that was also attending the dinner & the Massailon player was weighing his options so Tubs offered another quarterback big deal. Why is Tuberville's character being attacked?
You are going to have to ask the people attacking his character. Feelings often get hurt when coaches leave. He is not the only one who has had people say negative things about him when leaving a job.
Does the incoming schools allow the Big East to negotiate into different bowl games, maybe a couple better ones? Or does the Big East just remain with the current bowl tie-ins?
It is not up to the incoming schools to negotiate. The Big East will negotiate new tie-ins, and I can all but guarantee the bowl lineup will look different in 2014.
i saw your too early pre season ranking, im curious why you would put uconn and usf over smu and houston, uconn is a bad team that'll get even worse next year losing most of its players, houston started almost all freshmen, under a first time head coach and mistakes/drops cost them most of their games like the 4 muffed/fumbled punts vs smu and sims being hurt half the season, they'll be more experienceed and dramatically better next year and smu is losing zach line but they are still technically a spread air raid offense and gilbert is getting more comfortable with it (he wasn't given a true offseason/spring to learn the system and was just thrown in) he will be dramatically better next year (despite their monstrous schedule) and both have monster recruiting classes/transfers
Houston is reshuffling its coordinators, both offensive and defensive so I think this has the makings of another transition year. SMU loses a ton of talent, not just line. Lots of great players on defense as well, off a team that underachieved this year. I think USF will be better under Willie Taggart, and UConn has a chance to be better, too. But truth be told, I had a hard time ranking the middle of the league. I can certainly see opportunities for these programs to move up and down after spring practice ends and I get to know every team much better.
Titanic Conference. It's big and everyone wants a lifeboat.
Like that one.
One has to ask if the Boise State fans are happy going back to the MWC? Seems like a lot of them were happy to go with the BE. What are yourthoughts?
I think they are happy to stay. Less travel, and access to the elite level bowl games remains the same whether they are in the MWC or the BE in the new playoff format. There were really no benefits to joining once all the defections starting happening and the BE definitively lost AQ status.
Do you think that not having a CCG in 2013 is actually a blessing in disguise in that the BE's best team won't have to risk an early Decemeber loss?
I honestly think a conference championship game for any league outside the SEC, Big Ten, ACC and Pac-12 is a bad idea for that very reason.
SDSU would know exactly that kind of tv contract the MWC has, but that's not the case with the Big East which could have a heavily diluted tv contract given all the teams that've left or leaving. Don't know about the MWC voting bloc nor Big East payouts to remaining teams. SDSU is almost in a damned if you do or don't predictment. :(
Exactly and I think that is the problem here. There are so many unknowns they have to try to make a decision without having all the answers.
BSU fans were really looking forward to having UL and Rutgers on The Blue(tm). Hopefully, we can get some great OOC games in the near future.
AA, with Louisville gone next year who do you think steps up for the BE outside of Cincinnati?
Dare I say it ... USF??? (Ducking)
Perfect example, media leaves UC out of the AP Top 25. Coaches vote 'em in.
I was surprised to see that, Larry.
The loss of Rutgers and Louisville is concerning as well as the short-term intent of Cincinati and UConn to leave ASAP -- having said that, the current C-USA contract is still better than the re-negotiated MWC media deal by double and both are with CBS. If the new Big East is the old C-USA then it may be worth staying on ...we just want some sort of stability!
I'm taking a chance asking another question, after I called you out, I fear i've been put in time out by you...you are in control hear...who steps up next year? UCF of course!!! Remember they are the "sleeping giant" that has beaten NO body in the past 10 years...of course they will step up next year
Didn't they beat 6-7 Georgia a few years ago or something?
I for one would have prefered to stayed at least for one year in the Big East and seen how it played out. The schedule would have been BSU's best ever and there was no danger that the MWC wouldn't have taken us back in '14. I think we panic'd a little.
I don't think Boise panicked. You can't just play in a conference for one year and then change your mind and go back. I mean I guess you could, but that is probably not the ideal way of doing things. Boise State looked out for itself, got a good deal and is staying in a place where the access to the "upper-tier" bowl game is the same. Strength of schedule remains a concern, but Boise seems to have an annual place in the Top 25 regardless ...
AA, you don't have to say USF though I do think they will step up as they have no choice. I would say Houston and SMU could be factors
This is a critical year for Houston, IMO.
A.A just when I thought we were close again you make that USF prediciton. Geezzzzz what will we do with you. Stop the curse please.
(Crawls back into corner).
Hey Andrea, i know Rutgers wont get rid of Flood, but in your opinion is that a wise decision. They are moving to the big 10 soon and I feel like the program would be significantly better off signing a big name coach to send a message to the other schools that they plan on winning and not becoming the doormat people are expecting
Tell me why it is a wise decision to fire a coach that won nine games and co-Big East coach of the year honors after ONE SEASON. And what big-name coach are you looking for, Brian Kelly? Give the guy some time!
Yes, UCF beat Georgia in the Liberty Bowl. The same Georgia that started 1-4 while AJ Green was suspended and finished 5-2 heading into the bowl game with their only losses being to FL in OT and Auburn (eventual Natty Champs). Georgia then goes to the next two SEC CG....with essentially the same players. The 6-7 Georgia bit is tired.
Yes, it is a bit tired. Who has UCF beaten since then? Give me another line ...
Were you surprised by Jamison decision to leave early? I know there were some whispers but I thought the last few games when he got hurt would have made it an easy decision to return. How do you feel about Huggins as the main guy?
Shocked, Bill. Do not agree with the decision. Thought he would have improved himself with another year but getting that third-round grade must have changed his mind. I am mixed on Huggins. We saw one good game out of him but in the others that Jamison was hurt, he did not really take advantage of the opportunities. He certainly will be the featured back in '13. His opportunity is now (and I was going to explore this topic in a post next week!)
It is not the Boise tv deal ... every team in the conference gets to enjoy the same payout as Boise ... the money from Boise's home games goes to the conference pool ... each team enjoys same payout as Boise if they appear on national tv as much
IF they appear on national TV as much ... IF ...
Hello AA! If Kelly does leave ND, that starts a whole new round of coaching changes. At least two, maybe three in the current BCS conferences. It will be a big deal when it is done unless they decide on a OC or DC, which I can't see happening at all. ND is a job many coaches would love to have... ND and Strong for some strange reason does not seem like a good fit, so I am not concerned on that front. But the question is, who do you think they will target, anyone from the BE or the ACC, as that is how things tend to happen when someone needs a up and coming coach.
Do not forget that Charlie was an assistant some time ago in Notre Dame ... I am not going to speculate on that just yet since the job is not open. Tuna may better be able to answer that one.
My point is despite all the turmoil I think the Big East will still land a much larger contract than the MWC because of the markets involved. Houston has more TV sets in its suburbs than Wyoming does.... and so on down the road. BSU should have stayed and seen how it played out. If it was no good, then go back to the Mountain West. I'd much rather seen us in a true best of the rest league instead on BSU and the midgets.
I understand your point, but I have to think Boise State had some inclination to what the future TV deal would look like, even if there is nothing signed on a dotted line.
Are you surprised Syracuse did not get at least one vote in either of the final polls?
No. Syracuse went 8-5 and does not play in the Big Ten like Michigan (WHICH DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE RANKED AT ALL. COME ON AP VOTERS!)
how come Tuna never gets to chat? Are we chat hogging?
Tuna chats just before me, at 2 p.m. Thursdays so mark your calendars!
After watching Ed Lacy of Alabama destroy ND's front 7, I instantly thought of Jawan Jamison making a huge mistake coming out...he is no where close to being ready for the NFL...Lacy is though...
No doubt about that. I would want Lacy on my NFL team.
How much do you buy into the "theory's" out there that the ACC is going to get carved up? If so do you think it will be just a team or two? Or do they get broadsided?
There are people who insist it is only a matter of time before the Big Ten goes swooping in, and then the Big 12. Could it happen? Absolutely. I think we are headed for 16-team super conferences, and the ACC is the next one that is rip for the picking. When will it happen? I think a lot of that depends on the Maryland lawsuit and Jim Delany.
Hi Andrea! I've been a big fan since your days of writing for the Sentinel. What do you think the odds are of Blake Bortles breaking out and being a top QB in the Big East next year?
Thank you! Bortles already is a Top 3 QB in the league, if you ask me!
How bout L'VILLE AND RUTGIRLS leaving early? Any noise being made?
They will be around for 2013.
Agree that it is too early to give up on Flood. However, do you think he should bring back the OC? Since it appears Nova is the guy, even for next year, somebody has to take ownership for the offensive collapse over the last 4 games, right?
That somebody should be Kyle Flood. Of course Brock should take some responsibility as well, but I will agree with Flood on one point -- the entire offense was bad vs. VT. And let us not forget, if Tim Wright catches a few passes vs Louisville ... I think the WR play overall was a disappointment this year as well. Players have to step up.
The guy at the top is a fake. I am the real CFT. I do think TEDDY HEISMAN! will at least be a finalist in NYC later this year, though. Hi AA!
I knew I was being played!
Do we know if the Big East is going to stay with a 8 game conference schedule despite BSU's untimely walk out? Also do you think the Championship game is dead for '13.... in other words do you think the league will try to get a new member fast to keep that possible.
I think the 8-game league schedule is still on. And as for your second question, I think it all depends on what happens with San Diego State, and how many teams it thinks it can bring into the mix. The pool of candidates is drying up ...
I know I'm going to be in the minority in my area to say this. But I'd welocme UMass into the league. Gets the Boston market back on board and a rival next door. UR thoughts?
Again, all depends on San Diego State. If they leave, I think the BE should focus on trying to be more regionalized. And at this point, I do not think adding a new FBS program is going to destroy the BE "rep." It's already gone.
With the schedule Louisville is going to have next year, do you agree Bridgewater will need an undefeated regular season and at least near 5,000 all purpose yards to be in Heisman contention?
He will no doubt need an undefeated season AND monster numbers AND other players to fall flat. This is another post I am going to do next week at some point. That nonconference schedule is just horrible.
All right folks, that wraps up the chat for today. Thanks for joining! See you again next week.
