What's up guys? Got Strikeforce closing the curtains tomorrow. What are you going to miss? For me, it was seeing Fedor's priests walking around the host hotels. I'll never forget the curious, optimistic look they gave the Claim Jumper in Hoffman Estates, Ill. I was also fond of Le/Smith I. And Fedor/Werdum. And Diaz/Daley. And Tate/Rousey. Let's get this thing moving...
Hey Charles, in your mind, why can Melvin Guillard get over the hump? Seems like a waste of great potential.
You know, I do believe he has some of the heaviest hands in the division. He knows he had that, and because of it I feel like he has a limited range of scenario. If Guillard can't get it done early with the fists, he's never been too good at adapting/persevering. Guys been in a lot of fights for how young he is, and at this point, not sure we'll see him ever reach that full potential you're talking about.
Fedor's priests were an intriguing visual, for sure!
What's happening, Ash? Long time no visit the chat. What gives? Yeah, I liked seeing and talking to his priests. They were good dudes. Heavy drinking polygamists with late-night gambling problems, yes, but good dudes.
(I made up that last part).
Will the UFC absorb all the Strikeforce talent, or will some of these Strikeforce roster end up elsewhere like Bellator and the like?
Problem is, Mike, what is "the like?" It's UFC, or Bellator, or a severe drop off. My guess is a lot of the talent will get a shot in the UFC, but there will be guys signing with Bellator. Any of the big names will end up in the UFC.
Indeed, Gus. And well said.
Hey chuck, auto-update's off again
Chaz. Two questions. 1) Have you got a sense from Hendricks that he is mad about getting passed over for Nick Diaz? (Ps. I think Hnricks is going to tucker Ellenberger out for a round or two then GNP him). 2) Is the Hendricks/Ellenberger tilt a 5 round "title shot eliminator"?
I had a pretty severe sense that Hendricks was angry/frustrated by Diaz cutting in line. But, all of a sudden he was stacked in there against Ellenberger and he stopped fussing, so the UFC might have made him happy. As far as I know, that's a three-round bout.
I've seen all these lists with the "best of 2012." In your mind, who had the worst 2012?
Good question. Tempted to say Dan Henderson, for not getting to fight in 2012. Same with Gegard Mousasi, and others. But Henderson's stung a little more because he was linked to the great debacle that was UFC 151. As far as people who fought....Guillard didn't do himself any favors. Who else comes to mind for you guys?
Moto's love of Rockhold is well-documented, but what soon to be ex-Strikeforce fighter is going to do the most damage in the UFC?
I think Jacare has a chance to turn some heads. He fought a very close fight with Rockhold when he lost that belt, and I think he might have taken him in a rematch. He slinks in sort of quietly, but he has the tools to be trouble for anybody.
FYI to those unaware, Showtime is free for the next 3 days for cable subscribers! Good timing Showtime!
Look at Rick coming through with good news.
Hey bro, what's up with all he PED and testosterone busts? 2013 is picking up where 2012 left off. Paul Harris is one thing, but Beltran? C'mon man.
It's sad, but you're right...2013 is picking up right where 2012 left off. There is a point when I see Keith Kizer's email for testing results come through that I cringe a little. I am always a little afraid of who might have popped hot. At this point, though, it hardly ever surprises me (my immunities are building up). Was sorry to hear about these latest guys, but I feel like this will be a recurring thing.
Any chance Joe Rogan hits on me too?
You got more airtime than either Jason Kidd or Tony Parker's (ex)wives in that national championship game. Well done.
Hey Chuck, Buy or Sell... Daniel Cormier will end up fighting Cain Velasquez in 2013?
I'm going to sell it. I think if it comes down to it, Cormier will whittle himself down to 205 and try that crop before he fights his friend and training partner.
chuck who do you think anderson will fight first, jones or gsp?
At this point, since the GSP fight wasn't made when all parties were trying to get it done (except GSP), I will say Jones. I think both parties have thawed on the idea, and are actually envisioning the Brink's truck pulling up at their driveways.
What is the long term plan for UFC and Womens MMA? Will we see Tate, McMann and co in other fights or just a series of Rousey one offs?
Remains to be seen. Rousey needs to hold court (which she will with Carmouche), and then I'd suspect those names you mention coming in. Tate is a great rematch. McMann is the intrigue coming up the rungs. If they could fish Gina back out of Hollywood that'd be something (doubtful that happens though). And, of course, Cyborg, who is going to try to make 135 (I'm told).
Hi chuck, who do u like aldovsfrankie the more fights i watch of both guy? the more im clueless?thanks
So tough. I think Aldo in the end. His stand-up will get the best of Edgar. Edgar, for as great as he's been, takes a lot of punishment in the process. Aldo happily dishes punishment. He's one of the game's great strikers. BUT, two things: 1) Edgar always looks like an underdog heading into fights and 2) Edgar surprises everybody all the time.
How do you see the Eddie Alvarez / Belator "issue"sorting itself out?
What an ugly thing. I think ultimately he'll end up in the UFC, but I am not a lawyer and I haven't seen the contracts (with all those gray areas and projections). It all depends on what happens in court. If Bellator retains him, hope he doesn't lose steam.
if marquardt looks as impressive against tarrec as he did against woodly, whose next for him? is he top 10?
I think he's a top ten 170er right now. If he gets through Saffiedine (and I think he will), he'll already be making headway towards GSP. Maybe a fight with the Fitch/Maia winner?
Everybody is dishing out there memories of Strikeforce. How will you remember it?
As a regional show that kept chugging along...into the deeper waters of becoming a national promotion...while sort of keeping a regional smallness. I think they did great for what they set out to do.
WHO SHOULD BE CAINS NEXT FIGHT AFTER THE GLOOBERING OF JDS
The biggest fight the UFC can make will be Overeem, and that looks like it'll be the case if Overeem beats Bigfoot Silva. Should Silva win? Hmm. Then it gets tricky.
Gimme you prediction for tomorrow's game. Like Denver in that 20 degree weather?
Sam, my man. I like Denver. I think Baltimore might benefit from the return of Lewis (and other starters), but Denver's D will swarm on Flacco and make it a bad day. My predition: Denver 31, Baltimore 18.
Now that UFC has killed another competitor, any chance they start forming their own regional feeder promotions?
I think they view every other promotion (aside from maybe Bellator, and even then, Bellator too) as feeder leagues.
You didn't see me slapping retrospective high fives with your priests earlier?
I don't think so. I think Velasquez just fought better. For the first half a round JDS was staying off the mat, stepping out of every single leg. Then he ate that ridiculous overhand right and was never the same.
Another good memory of Strikeforce was the Hendo/Fedor card ... was on the floor for that. My chin hurt from that shot Hendo landed that put him down.
I still think that was one of the best rounds in MMA history. Hendo didn't want to play with fire (he said) by standing and trading, and then the bell rings and what do they do? Come out swinging. The end of that round was ridiculous. Looks like Hendo's out, the little wrestling move, the punch he deliver from under the arm, etc. Great stuff.
(And I remember before that Fedor/Hendo fight...somebody in the media asked Henderson, "what's it like to fight somebody who is known by a single name...FEDOR," and they let it hang out there. Henderson didn't know how to answer that dramatic swill).
Good point. I am typing without a lot of contemplation here. But Rampage didn't have a great 2012.
Dana White is eager to build Women's MMA around Ronda Rousey, but he never wanted to with Gina Carano. What is it about Rousey that wasn't there with Carano?
I don't have a cup to hold up the wall, but my guess is that Rousey seems more legitimate with her Olympic background and marketability. She's getting more exposure than most male stars do in their whole career. Ultimately, though, I think he thinks she's a legit champion.
I'd go along with that. Can't think of one that would trump Serra over GSP. I am not even sure Chael beating Jones would touch that.
Anderson Silva's next fight will be against __________?
I want to say Bisping, but I've seen him tumble in penultimate spots before. If not him, I will say Rockhold.
What happens if Rousey LOSES to the Lizared Carmouche??? Gotta think its a devastating blow to women in the UFC, no?
Can you imagine? Not sure how her contract is structured, but that might be the first (and last) women's fight in the UFC. Can't imagine it happening, though.
If Healy wins tomorrow night, where do you think he ranks amongst the UFC lightweights? Can he contend with the likes of Maynard, Miller, Diaz..?
You know, people talk about Healy like an ancient journeyman in MMA, but he's only 29 years old and has improved over the course of the last few years. He's a tough guy; gritty wrestler with a chin. Surprisingly strong. He's won five in a row. He might surprise some people, but ultimately I don't think he'll hang with the names you mention.
when should we expect g.melendez in the ufc?
I think he'll be on the San Jose card in April. That would make sense. And it'll probably be against Benson Henderson. That's the way Dana was leaning last I talked to him at UFC 155.
Chuck, will you be in Chicago for UFC on FOX 6 on Jan. 26? I need someone to drink beer with...and to see what hats are in style this winter.
Not going to be in Chicago, unfortunately. ESPN is sending Franklin McNeil. Was trying to finagle a trip there for FIGHT! Magazine, but they looked at me like I was crazy.
You're Joe Silva - Do you give Alvarez an immediate title shot or do you give it to Melendez? Seems weird that the UFC offered Alvarez a possible title shot off the bat in the contract.
I don't know if they really offered Alvarez a title shot. If they did it was before Strikeforce was for sure known to be ending. When I spoke to Dana White at UFC 155, I asked him about Alvarez and Melendez in a title shot. He said Alvarez doesn't make sense, but Melendez, as reigning Strikeforce champion, was likely.
I want to see JDS's BJJ. He said he has it, so why did he not use it in the rematch with Cain?
I think part of that is he was hurt pretty bad in that first round, and massively fatigued from the second round on. The other part of that? His BJJ has always been theoretical because he's been so good at keeping things standing. There's a reason he likes fights standing.
What's up with Alverez getting Show money equal to the Champions Show plus Win money?
The UFC had to offer him something substantial to wrest him from Bellator (and to spook Bellator from matching). Turned out it didn't work (at least not how it was planned). Now we might see some disgruntled lightweights.
Chuck, out of all the current UFC titleholders, who's most likely to get dethroned in 2013?
The heavyweight title is toughest to hold onto. The most anybody's ever defended it is twice (Couture, Sylvia, Lesnar). So I'd still go with that. Can't see Jones losing to Sonnen, or GSP to Diaz. Cruz is out for a while, and when he returns there may be some rust. Aldo's got a tough fight with Edgar, but I think he wins. Flyweights? Dodson overmatched against Might Mouse.
Seems like Cormier should stay at HW seeing as how the title will switch hands fairly frequently in that division. Love to see him against Jones, but he also beats most or all the HW's.
I think that's his plan. Stay at heavyweight, see how things shake out. If Cain loses at some point, and Cormier gets a shot at the belt, he'd love it. But if Velasquez holds onto it and Cormier becomes the obvious No. 1 contender, I think he'll try and talk his way into a fight with Jones. Either way, compelling fights.
Yo Chuck, if you were a fighter, who would you want in your corner?
I get this question a lot. I think I'd go with Mike Winkeljohn, Matt Serra and Josh Gross (who, I presume, is incapable of BSing me when I'm down on scorecards...which I would be).
How big of a splash can Jacare make in the UFC? Seems like nobody's talking about him.
Addressed this a bit ago, but I see him as a dark horse to make a title bid in 2013. He's tough and good everywhere (improved on the feet, too).
Dodson have any chance against Mighty Mouse? And do people care?
I know he keeps coming through in upset spots, but I can't imagine him beating Demetrious Johnson. Johnson looked so good/smart in that second McCall fight, and he backed it up against Benavidez. Hume has him clicking on all cylinders.
How upset would you be if you had numerous fights in the UFC, were successful, and you catch wind of what the UFC is offering Eddie Alvarez?
Depends. If I'm Joe Lauzon, I'm okay with it. Show/win money is only a part of the total income on fight night. But I am sure there'll be some dissension...if not publicly, then behind closed doors.
I want Rampage and Wandy to fight again. Why not put that KO waiting to happen on FOX. We all know Rampage will eventually re-up with UFC. What the hell else is he gonna do?
I'd like to see that. And Forrest/Jackson II would be alright. What else are you going to do with the aging set of gatekeeper types who still have big names?
Ten years from now, as more athletes find MMA, is there a 235 lb division ?
I think if we truly saw a discrepancy develop, where bigger heavyweights were beating smaller ones consistently, they'd look into it. But honestly, I doubt it. White's pretty adamant about keeping heavyweight where it is.
Demetrious took Cruz to a decision, and Cruz is a beast! No way does Dodson have anything for Mighty Mouse.
Agree, Ash. That's what I'm screaming.
Better fight, Weidman vs Silva or Rockhold vs Silva? And do you feel Silva should have to defend against both?
Both of those are pretty fun to contemplate. Rockhold is a big strong middleweight, great patient attack and counters. I think that would be a fun fight. Weidman obviously has some of the Silva antidote with that strong wrestling. I believe he'd be a harder match-up for Silva than Sonnen was. So, as a cop out, I will say both are intriguing.
Assuming a win tomorrow, what type of opponent does Gegard get in his first UFC fight? Top 10? Top 5?
Good question. I think he'd end up with a top ten type of fighter. Maybe he draws somebody like Teixeira if Glover takes care of Rampage a couple of weeks later.
Chuck, appreciate the chat. Why aren't you nominated for an MMA award? Do the fans pick who gets nominated? If so, people should recognize homie! Keep up the good work.
Thanks, Wes. Not nominated, and not sure how they come up with the nominees. My guess is it's fan-based? Not sure it'd do any good to be in there with Ariel Helwani anyway. He wins each time. Problem is, there should be two different media categories -- print and video, or something along those lines.
Dodson has something up his sleeve for MM, and that's KO power in that left!
He does have some power. And he's great at capitalizing on little mistakes. I think it'll be a fun fight, but Johnson will prevail.
chuckie, who will daniel cromier fight first in the ufc? ? obviously this staring guy he's fighting will make him look good. tanks!
I think they'll still try and match him up with Frank Mir. That's what it feels like to me. Hey, no qualms with that.
chuck. why is d.c. And cain so much againest fighting each other? i understand the teammate ,boys, but they don't want tofine. hate see another jonesvsevans fight it was brutal on the fans?thanks
I think it's because they have long trained together and have been on opposite sides of the petition (Cormier with Strikeforce; Velasquez with UFC). They were safe from fighting one another. Now that they're both going to be in the UFC, it gets tricky. But AKA guys are absolutely rigid on not fighting each other.
Is it conceivable that Edgar could make it down to 135 if he wanted to? It sounds like the amount of weight he will be cutting to get to 145 will be very little.
I think he could make it, because he literally walks around just above 155 pounds. But it would be hard, and I doubt he'd want to. He wants to fight at 155. I think ultimately that's where he'll end back up.
Why isn't Hendricks face on the Poster? If they complain about his marketability, they need to put him on the poster with GSP and Diaz.
Is he not on the poster? That doesn't make much sense to me. I agree, you can't complain about his marketability and then not market him. Guys been in a couple of title eliminators already and won them both. He knocks people senseless. What's not to love?
Which Frank Mir for DC? The Mir who is the greatest Jiu Jitsu heavyweight of all time (Sorry Big Nog) or the dopey guy who thinks he's a stand up guru?
Roll of the dice, Ash. Always a roll of the dice.
Sorry to keep bothering you but I have a comment about Gil Melendez. I watched his last two fights and left both wildly unimpressed. He looks SLOW compared to Pettis, Henderson, Maynard and more Lightweights I can't think of right now. He is in for a rude awakening in the UFC. Valid points, or am I taking crazy pills?
I think he'll stack up fine against the UFC guys, honestly. He fought the best available in Strikeforce, but ultimately the cupboards over there weren't overflowing with dream match-ups. Part of it is complacency, too. He's getting guys that everybody expects him to walk right through, which is a hard condition to (continuously) fight in. We'll find out a lot in his first UFC bout.
Chucky! DW is already planning fights for MSG and it hasnt been passed in NYC yet, what are the odds it happens ?
Got me, man. I am an optimist, so I think 50/50. But it's such a behind the scenes sort of ugliness, that I have no real idea. People who are following the situation a lot closer than me seem pretty optimistic it'll happen soon, so I'll harvest those vibes.
Chuck, how many ppv buys do you see for Jones/Sonnen? I think between 750,000 and 850,000 is a reasonable number? Also, will GSP/Diaz hit 1 million buys?
Depends on the build-up, JJ. I think there's potential it could do that well, but I would put it more around 500-600K. I just wonder how many people will honestly believe Sonnen will be competitive for Jones.
Alright guys, I have to close this thing down. Enjoy the last Strikeforce card, toast it and send it off proper, and let's do this again next week. As always, if I didn't get to your question, hit my Twitter feed @ChuckMindenhall.
