Chat with Ian Begley

Ian Begley
  (12:15 PM)

Hey guys, Apologize for the delay here. Thanks for coming by. There's plenty to talk about, so let's jump right into it.

Deven (New York, NY)

Ian, was the suspension for Carmelo too harsh, just right or completely unfair? I think, with all due respect to Carmelo, he should have been fined. Do you agree?

Ian Begley
  (12:17 PM)

Hey Deven, As a human, I understand Carmelo's reaction but I think the suspension was justified. He was really hurt when all the video surfaced. The NBA, as you know, is all about image. And video like that certainly hurts the league's image.

Thanks!

Lakers/Clippers town [via mobile]

the lakers have 16 nba championship, an the clippers r number 1 in the west this year. new york basketball is sorry, an they will get knock out the playoff by the heat.

Ian Begley
  (12:18 PM)

I'll let you guys deal with our buddy from La La land

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What are Your Favorite NFL,NHL,MLB,& NBA Teams even though you cover the Knicks?

Ian Begley
  (12:19 PM)

I grew up about 40 minutes outside of NYC and I rooted for the Knicks, Giants, Rangers, Yankees as a kid. Now that I cover most of them, I no longer root for them. Have to remain objective when reporting on the teams.

Jared (CT)

How much would a signing of Kenyon Martin help the knicks? Whose playing time would it hurt the most?

Ian Begley
  (12:21 PM)

Depends on what kind of shape Kenyon's in and how badly Rasheed Wallace and Marcus Camby are hurt. If Camby and Wallace can return at 100% health in the near future, I don't think they need to go after K-Mart because they have a group that works as is. If Wallace and Camby won't be available long-term due to injury, then it makes sense to go after K-Mart. Don't forget, they'd have to cut someone to make room for Kenyon.

Nikolay (DC)

What happened to the unselfish ball movement and aggressive defense from the early days of the season that set the Knicks apart from everyone else? It can't be only Felton's absence...

Ian Begley
  (12:22 PM)

That's a great question. Not having Felton impacts it, but you are dead right. That can't be the only excuse. It comes down to giving maximum effort on every possession. I think we were seeing that early one and we havent seen it as much of late.

Matt (Bronx)

#NYK best starting 5 right now- Kidd/Brewer/Copeland/Melo/TC -Melo at 4 is a GREAT mismatch; they can be more explosive offensively; D is solid w/hustle... plus you have J.R., Amar'e, Novak, Prigioni, Thomas off the bench. Thoughts?

Ian Begley
  (12:25 PM)

Matt, I think your right. In light of the Camby injury, that's probably the best starting 5 right now. Copeland would need to reign in his shot attempts with Anthony on the floor, but that shouldnt be a problem

Deven (New York, NY)

What do the Knicks need to do differently this time around to beat the Bulls tonight and avoid another embarrassment?

Ian Begley
  (12:27 PM)

Deven, it's going to be tough because Chicago has shown in the first two games that they're adept at slowing down the Knicks pick and roll and staying at home on their perimeter shooters. The Knicks are going to need penetration from one of their guards with the hopes of creating open looks against Chicago's defense. Either that, or they need Anthony to play hero ball for one night and use his individual talents to score against the Bulls

Nick (NYC)

Not sure of the negativity the potential K-Mart acquisition is getting. If it's a vet min deal, even if it isn't just a 10-Day contract, so what if it doesn't work out? Low-risk, high reward in my mind. And if he gets signed, who gets cut, James White? Could he end up on Knick's D-League affiliate if no one else signs him?

Ian Begley
  (12:29 PM)

The one thing you worry about Nick is that the Knicks have a nice group together now. Does K-Mart impact the balance they've established? That's a small worry, of course. The bigger concern is if Wallace and Camby are healthy enough to contribute. If they are, there's no need for K Mart. If they aren't, then I think the Knicks should get in touch with Martin's representatives and start talking deal.

Anthony (NY)

how long is camby out for?

Ian Begley
  (12:31 PM)

That's unclear right now. Camby will be examined by docs in New York today to determine the extent of the injury. Based on what he said last night, it seems like he reaggravated the platar fascia in his left foot. The same injury caused him to miss 12 games earlier in the season

Alex (Anaheim)

Watching such a sloppy and winnable game slip away last night, I couldn't help but wonder: did Carmelo really deserve his suspension?

Ian Begley
  (12:32 PM)

Alex, I think the NBA suspended Carmelo because of the video evidence that surfaced. If that hadn't surfaced, maybe he gets away with a fine. But because they had visual confirmation, they had to do that. I think it was justified. As a league, you can't have players confronting eachother off the court without consequence.

Alex (Phoenix)

Now that Lala has confirmed KG's comments were not directed at her, what can we do to address Carmelo being a bit soft in this area?

Ian Begley
  (12:35 PM)

No one really knows what the truth is there. I have no reason to believe Lala, Doc Rivers or anyone else whose tried to dismiss what was said. As a human being, I understand Carmelo reacting that way if Garnett made reference to his family. But if you are signing Anthony's checks, you have every right to be upset with how he conducted himself because it costed the Knicks a win.

NC (NY)

I see a lot of Knicks bloggers saying they expect the Knicks to make a trade. I am not saying I want a lot of moving parts, roster is solid, but what could they get and what would they give up? I see a strong defender who can catch and make 3s as a solid addition. Like a Ronnie Brewer who could shoot a little, or a Novak who could defend a little.

Ian Begley
  (12:37 PM)

Hey NC, I think the most imminent move, if they made one, would be to bring in a big off the bench. They've been discussing Kenyon Martin internally but have yet to reach out to his agent. I agree with you, though. I think as long as Camby and Wallace can return from their injuries, they should sit tight. This group works well together.

Gary (New York)

Ian, I'm surprised that Carmelo hasn't been taken to task more about his behavior vs. Boston. In my mind he cost them 2 games: one b/c he lost his cool vs. Boston and the othe b/c the Indiana game was easily winnable if he played. He is their best player so in my mind if he loses his cool he hurts them immeasurably. thoughts?

Ian Begley
  (12:38 PM)

I agree that it cost them two games. As many have pointed out, there is a perception out there that you can get in Carmelo and the rest of the Knicks' heads with a little physical play and throw them off of their games. It happened against Memphis, Chicago and Boston. If your a Knicks fan, I'd be concerned that there is a blue print out there to beat your team.

Deven (New York, NY)

What's the latest on Raymond?

Ian Begley
  (12:39 PM)

Hey Deven, He's hoping to be back by the time the team gets back from London.

Kenny Bx [via mobile]

Amare was awful last eve. Any chance they shut him down for a month or two? He didn't crash boards, played. No D...... Looks like Suns med staff was correct

Ian Begley
  (12:41 PM)

Don't see that happening, Kenny. They need Amar'e to contribute here. That's not going to happen if they shut him down. But I agree with you. He hasn't shown progress night in and night out the way you'd like him to.

Deven (New York, NY)

What's the latest on Shump?

Ian Begley
  (12:43 PM)

Shump has made it through two practices without significant soreness in his knee, which is a good sign. He's hoping to come back sometime later this month. The London game hasnt been ruled out yet, but I'd bet that he misses that game and comes back later in the month, possibly against Brooklyn.

steve (princeton, nj)

how long is amare in for?

Ian Begley
  (12:45 PM)

Hey Steve, Amar'e's minutes have been cut to around 20 per night after he experienced soreness following the Boston game on Monday. Amar'e played a season-high 28 minutes against the Celts and had some soreness. So team docs told Woodson to limit him to 20-23 minutes.
