Hey guys, I'm here, let's get started ...
When are te Hookies going to make a decision on the O-coordinator position. If Logan is going to stay I would think who is running the offense would go into the decision? Who do you think the front runners are?
No idea, and I can't believe it is taking this long. No wonder LT hasn't said anything yet. VT fans should hope there is more of a sense of direction from within than there appears to be from the outside looking in.
Happy Monday HD, Syracuse fan here. What are your expectations for the Orange in year 1 of the ACC? Going to a tough Atlantic Division with CU and FSU. I can see them winning 8 games.
Hey there, Mike. Well, you nailed it -- they're in the toughest division right now. Let's wait until the entire sked comes out before saying how many games they'll win. I think they'll be competitive, but not enough that they'll actually challenge for the division title. Middle of the pack is my guess.
The quarterback battler should be interesting in tallahassee this spring and fall, how do you see it shaping out between the trickett, winston, and coker. For some reason i don't see trickett as being a true starter and I would think Coker and Winston could be big in this league given the opportunity.
I can't wait to see how that competition goes this spring/summer, Brian. I know many fans are eager to see what Winston can do in particular, but it has to be Trickett's job to lose considering the experience edge.
Do you see Mario Cristobal joining the Canes a sign that the punishment the Canes have self imposed so far will suffice for the NCAA?
No, I don't think it's smart to correlate those two things. Too big of an assumption. Taken separately, though, you would THINK that the Canes' cooperation and self-inflicted sanctions would go a long way with the NCAA. Hopefully we'll find out soon.
There are 5 Saturdays in November and two of them are already taken. Do you think the ACC will smarten up an schedule the Tigers vs The Noles on one of the other untaken Saturdays? Have you heard anything about it? A late November game could make the Atlantic interesting. Thanks.
Yeah somebody brought that up in the mailbag, and I'm working on a scheduling edition of the mailblog for you guys to help answer that question. I would love to see that one in November, though, makes a ton of sense.
Next season, how can Clemson keep Boyd in the Heisman conversation while also making sure his replacement plays enough snaps so that 2014 doesn't have to be a "rebuilding" year?
I don't think you can coach your way around growing pains when introducing a new quarterback, and if I'm Dabo Swinney, no WAY do I skimp on Boyd's reps unless the game is a wash and the risk of injury is greater than the reward of keeping him in.
Miami-FSU ACCCG, book it. Unless of course the NCAA comes down hard on da U.
Nope. I'm going with Canes-Clemson.
Heather; which nonconference ACC match-up are you most excited for? I'm already amped for the Clemson/ Georgia game, and the North/ South Carolina game.
Clemson-Georgia no doubt. I think that's the one that will be getting most of the hype going into the season. I wince thinking about what Bama is going to do to VT.
Why discount Virginia Tech right now....Contended for the Coastal even in 2012...The offense can't get any worse next year so why not an ACC title?
One reason I give the Hokies a shot: The defense returns nine starters. A bigger reason I don't: They have done nothing yet to convince me the offense will be any better. It didn't get any better ALL season.
Would the return of Logan Thomas change your mind on Miami winning the coastal?
Nope. I would still give the edge to the Canes' o-line, and I would rank Stephen Morris ahead of LT heading into next season.
With Coach D coming in with brand new everything, how likely is it that the Pack ends up with WF in the bottom of the rankings?
Well, I had them ranked 13th or thereabouts in the ACC power ranking because of the overhaul. After watching that bowl game, NC State has a ton of work to do this offseason.
FSU new hire at LB/special teams is it good or bad?
Good. Charles Kelly is a good coach, well-respected and did a remarkable job as interim DC for the Jackets.
I think that is what upsets HOKIE fans the most is the lack of direction and decision by Frank in making a decision on the offensive coordinator's job. Gee, not only Logan Thomas' decisions, but national signing day is not far off.
Who's to say they haven't tried to make a decision but candidates for OC have turned them down? You never know what's going on. I honestly don't think it's intentional, but I wouldn't have waited so long to get the ball rolling.
What do you think about the hire of Ted Roof?
I like it. He's genuinely one of the good guys in the business, the Duke folks loved him, but man, he has been a NOMAD. My biggest question after the hire was how long is he going to stick around? GT D needs some consistency at the DC position.
We know that you pick Clemson to win the Atlantic next season, but other than Boyd at QB, I honestly feel that FSU on an overall roster basis is better at every other position on the field, so why do you think Clemson is that much better than the noles?
Well, I don't think Clemson is "THAT" much better ... but yes, without question, a huuuuge reason I give them the edge early is because of the QB position. Beyond that, the staff changes are also a question mark. FSU will be under a new DC, while Clemson should show more improvement in the second year under Brent Venables. And they return four starters on the o-line for Boyd.
How could Logan Thomas be your can't miss player of the year for 2012 and now your giving him no credit and no concerderation for being a top contender for POY next season.. It seem that if everything in Blacksburg changes in the right direction you might being eating crow.
Wouldn't be the first time, but here's the thing ... I have been in LT's corner ALL season, and plenty of ACC fans killed me all year for reiterating that I think he could be a first-round draft pick despite the poor season. The reason I'm not giving him too much credit is because I'm not convinced the show around him will be that much better ... who is the OC? How much better will the receivers be? Can they block? Will they find a running game?
Is there a more annoyed / frustrated fan base in college football than the Hokienation??
Great question. Anyone out there? Buehler? Buehler?
Heather, who do you feel are the top 3 most likely heisman candidates from the ACC for next season?
I'm not sure the ACC HAS three Pierce. My knee-jerk reaction here is Tajh Boyd is the guy. I predict he's in NY next year as a finalist.
If i was FSU fan I'd be more annoyed and frustrated
I didn't say it ...
Who got most "screwed" by the new schedule regarding repeat games? Not sure why Va Tech didn't get matched up against Fl St (as they were supposed to play) - isn't one of Fl Sts knocks on the ACC is having too easy of a schedule?
I think GT got the worst of it, having to go to Clemson again.
If 12-2 with a BCS win and ACC championship is annoyed and frustrated, I'd hate to see what 7-6 with no future on offense is.
Imagine how BC fans feel ... are there any out there today?
What qualifications do you think Beamer is looking for in a potential OC?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but last I heard, Bryan Stinespring and Mike O'Cain were still employed?
Of all the incoming freshmen that will be going through Spring practice with their new teams, do you see any stand out or immediate impact kids that get to start in the fall?
I have to look back at all the early enrollees, James, but one guy who comes to mind quickly isn't a freshman, it's UMD JUCO WR Deon Long. He could really help.
HD, I think Clemson fans will be pleasantly surprised by Rod McDowell stepping up to the starting RB spot. What do you think?
Yeah, he has the potential to really make a name for himself this year, and with Ellington gone, somebody is going to have to step out of the shadows there.
Heather, who do you see quarterbacking for Maryland next year? CJ Brown, Young, or Hills? Brown is a great athlete, but not sure if he is accurate enough as a QB. Young is one of Locksley's guys, but has never taken a snap in a college game yet. Hills showed promise last year, but is still young.
I would be really surprised if it were anyone besides C.J. Brown, Rob. He's got the edge at experience and I think he is flat-out the best option they have on the roster right now.
HD, you're right, Stinespring and O'Cain are still employed, but do your sources and or your gut feeling tell you a change is brewing?
Yes, but in all honesty, the last thing my sources told me were that those guys were still employed, and that Sherman and Newsome had been offered other jobs but hadn't done anything with those offers yet. That was last week.
With Hopkins going pro, who will replace him in the starting lineup? Martavis Bryant? What is the word on Germone Hopper? Does anyone in the ACC or SEC have a better WR corps than Clemson?
PLENTY of options there, should be a great battle this spring/summer. Don't forget about the No. 3 receiver, Adam Humphries, who had 41 receptions last year. And Charone Peake (25 catches). Hopper was rated the No. 4 player in North Carolina by ESPN.com and the No. 13 receiver in his recruiting class.
I watched Rod McDowell when he was in high school as we're from the same county (Sumter, SC). He will impress with his toughness, especially, given his size.
Thanks for weighing in, Michael.
You are really pushing Tahj for Heisman which is fine but the only way he wins it is if he beats UGA, FSU and USC. He has more of chance to hurt his draft stock than win the Heisman imo
I see Boyd as a player who will always be a better college player than a pro prospect. Of course he would love to prove me wrong on that, and that's fine, but you are absolutely right ... he needs to probably go 2-1 in those games to have a real shot. I'm not sure they can beat UGA, but I think they can beat FSU and South Carolina. I think they get two of those three.
What do you think the ACC will look like in 5 years? Best guess?
Oh my lord. My guess is still 14 teams, Beamer retires.
HD, What would be a bigger deal for the ACC next year? VT beating Bama, or having a team in the top 4 at the end of the season?
Lol if VT beats Bama aren't they a top four team?!
Did the ACC help or hurt it Identity with the past football season; Out of Conf. match ups, Bowl Games and the lost of Maryland. I'm not sure if the addition of Pitt, Cuse, ND and in a year Louisville addition is going to give the ACC any more boost. WHAT IS THE ACC IDENTITY??
Great question. Right now, I think it's some positive momentum. The regular season was BRUTAL, we all know it. Two ineligible teams, GT applyling for a waiver, VT tanking, FSU losing at NCSU ... but Louisville's win over Florida coupled with Clemson's win over LSU, I think the outlook is much brighter.
Heather, given both scenarios (Logan stays or not) and what you know now what would you predict the Hokies W-L record to be for next season?
Again, I need to look at the schedule, but with that defense, they shouldn't have much trouble getting to a bowl game.
Which ACC teams should be preseason top 25? Clemson, fsu, anyone else?
No, after last season any other teams need to play their way in, but I say Canes are next in.
With all the talk of Miami and GT in the Coastal and Clemson and FSU in the Atlantic.... who could be "darkhorses" in those 2 divisions and surprise?
Wake Forest in the Atlantic (yeah, I said that), and UNC in the Coastal.
Who is the next ACC team to play for a NC?
Clemson gets my vote as the ACC's NC contender in 2013, but I don't think it happens because of the UGA game.
Anyword from conference realignment? There were rumors GA Tech was leavng to Big10 in mid December but things are very quite.
Yes, things have gotten very quiet (thankfully), but I'm not convinced we've heard the last of the rumors. I have not heard anything, though.
Top 3 qb's in the conference NOT named Boyd are?
Stephen Morris, Logan Thomas and Bryn Renner. Vad Lee might play his way into that list. Quickly.
Will the ACC championship game move to another site?
I don't think so. Charlotte has been a success, and I know John Swofford likes it there and the city has been good to the game and its fans.
Do you think there will be any special animosity towards Maryland next year, since they are abandoning the conference? Maybe Clemson and FSU keep the first stringers in the game an extra quarter.
I don't think there will be any animosity from the coaches, but I'm sure you guys will come up with some creative ways to bid the Terps farewell on their final tour.
With Cuse and Pitt joining; why did the ACC have to find another team? I realize 13 is a tough number but sooner or later another team will leave and the ACC will be left with a good 12. 14 is too big to schedule.
No, they had to find somebody to replace Maryland, and Louisville was a great choice.
Odds of Clemson beating Georgia? and if they do beat them where does that put them in the national discussion?
Not saying it won't happen -- Clemson just beat LSU. But if they played today I'd pick Georgia. IF Clemson wins that game, it legitimizes the national title talk (is anyone besides me talking national title talk? I dunno ...)
Had our AD not left I don't think BC would have any fans left. HD with BC's relatively easy non-con sched next year what chance do you give my eagles of being bowl eligible? Is that too optimistic at this point?
There you are, BC. Yeah, James, I'm not willing to go bowl-eligible with BC until I see those guys play a bit under the new staff. I'm not convinced it was the overhaul BC needed.
Odds of VT beating Alabama....and you can't say "slim to none"
Ok just "none."
I believe Florida State lost 5 coaches and they replaced 3. Any word on who the other 2 coaches will be? Are they all on the offensive side of the ball?
Yep, Eddie Gran and Dameyune Craig, no word on replacements yet.
With Louisville replacing Maryland, will the divisions stay the same, with the way that program is going and the current direction of the coastal division, that would make the ACC very atlantic heavy with louisville, clemsoin and FSU in the same division.
Yes, the divisions will stay the same, and yes, the Atlantic is going to be a BEAST.
Go ahead and say it Heather: Clemson National Champs next year 14-0
Trust me, nobody in the ACC wants the HD KOD in January.
Based on the schedule, which of the two new ACC members have a better chance of a winning record and being bowl eligible. I believe bowl eligibility will be the ceiling for both teams.
Pitt. Syracuse is joining the coaching transitions in the Atlantic.
Is there any love out there for my Hoos? Will we be better or worse without Rocco?
Hey Pam! I think UVa will be better overall. Love the hire of Tom O'Brien. As for the QBs ... I think ACC fans gave Sims too much credit. Not sure why all the hype. He's gotta play better to make them a contender, and Mike London needs to stick with one guy. If he goes Sims/Watford ... ugh.
Ok guys, my time here is up. Thanks for joining me this week. See you next time!hd
