Chat with Myron Medcalf

Myron Medcalf
  (2:00 PM)

What's up, everyone? So much to discuss today. Let's go ... And thanks for joining me.

Tim D. (New Haven)

Who'd you vote No. 1 and why do you hate my team?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:02 PM)

Louisville. And I think that's the right team. The resume is solid. Played Duke tough without Dieng. But multiple teams, including Duke, have arguments. ... Who's your favorite team? I'm pretty sure I don't hate them. Unless they're the 90s Chicago Bulls.

Jonathan (KC)

Does Coach MacGyver (aka Bill Self) get the win tonight on Big Monday?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:03 PM)

I think the Jayhawks will win tonight. But I'm still interested in the matchup. I want to see what Isaiah Austin does against Withey. He's a stretch-5. He can hit the 3-ball, draw Withey out to the perimeter and create room for Pierre and other Baylor playmakers inside. But I don't think Baylor has a defense that can handle Kansas. Should be a solid game though.

Daniel (NC)

Do you think that UConn can pull off the upset tonight?? or is Louisville just to big and to strong for us to handle?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:05 PM)

It's possible. First, Huskies are home, which is always a plus. I don't think there are any concerns about Shabazz and Ryan Boatright. But will Tyler Olander and Daniels show up? That's the question. Olander has played well in recent weeks. They need buckets inside. They have to challenge Dieng.

Brad (Gadsden,Alabama)

Myron, Do you think the SEC is having a down year?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:06 PM)

Down is probably an understatement. I don't see any national title contenders other than Florida (maybe) right now. And a bunch of mediocre teams below Ole Miss, Florida, Mizzou and probably Kentucky. Although Wildcats have been average lately.

Chris (Spokane, WA)

I'm not sold on Gonzaga.. The Schedule is weak, we got beat at home and had some close one's against bad teams. How are we to prepare for the tourney without playing any strong teams the rest of the way (Butler game looks different with leading scorer going down) Thanks Myron.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:09 PM)

First, Zags will have a test this weekend against Butler. And they played Baylor, Illinois, Kansas State and Oklahoma State. That's solid. Have you looked at some of the SEC nonconference slates? It's not their fault that the rest of the WCC is down this year. ... I think Gonzaga is a team that can make a run in March. Here's why: Kelly Olynyk. He changes everything for Mark Few. He's one of he worst matchups in the country as a versatile 7-footer who hits his free throws.

Icarus (earth)

Myron, except for criminal offense or insubordination why would any school (USC) fire a coach in mid season?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:11 PM)

The timing will never make sense. The move isn't surprising. I just don't know what the Trojans gain by doing it now. ... And how will that make the gig more appealing to other coaches? "Just an FYI ... we fired the last guy in mid-January .. .after a road win." That's really attractive. ... There's also this "recruit L.A. and you're a champion" myth out there. It's not that simple. And it's not 1975.

Matthew (New York)

Why does everyone mention Dieng not playing in the Duke-Louisville game? Seth Curry has played the whole season on 1.5 legs and Duke lost to NC State Saturday without Kelly but we still lost. The game doesn't have an asterisk just because he was hurt!

Myron Medcalf
  (2:13 PM)

The Duke game is more pertinent this week because we're having a discussion about a new No. 1. Duke was given credit for that win. That's why Blue Devils were No. 1. .. Now that we have a bunch of contenders, however, we have to look at the circumstances surrounding the one-loss teams. So, yes, Dieng's absence matters. ... But I still think Duke has a solid argument for No. 1, too. .. There's no undisputed No. 1 right now, although I voted for Louisville.

Brady [via mobile]

Who's your final four picture look like?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:14 PM)

Well after this weekend ....I really don't know ... But I really like Kansas, Duke (if Kelly returns), Louisville and Indiana right now.

Kenny (West Virginia)

Do you think CJ Leslie and NC State are the best of the ACC? Seemed to take it to Plumlee and Duke pretty strong.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:15 PM)

Hard to argue that after this weekend's win. Might have been a different game with Kelly in action. But it doesn't matter. N.C. State did what it had to do. And Gottfried made great adjustments in the second half.... And we're not sure when we'll see Duke at 100 percent again. ... So Wolfpack is No. 1. Right now.

UoflonFIYA (philly)

Louisville vs Indiana. neutral location. who wins and why?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:16 PM)

Ooooh ... I like it ... I'm going with Louisville. Dieng would be the best interior defender Zeller had seen all year. So much perimeter speed. ... And Louisville has that experience, too. Plus, the best defense in the country. ... But I think it would be close.

Cam (Los Angeles)

What is UCLA's ceiling this year? And who is your favorite in the PAC 12 currently?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:18 PM)

I think UCLA could become a Sweet 16-level team come March. Shabazz Muhammad has played some of the best basketball in the country in recent weeks. Defense is improving. Offense can keep up with any team in the nation. ... But so many unknowns for a team with so much youth.

Evan (Oxford)

Can Ole Miss compete with Florida for the SEC Championship?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:19 PM)

Maybe. Ole Miss is solid on defense and offense. They play fast. And they have a true playmaker in Marshall Henderson. ..But I can't say they're on Florida's level until I see more Rebels SEC basketball on the road.

Sam (La Crosse)

How do you see the Michigan-Minnesota match up playing out this week at the Barn? If Minnesota beats the Wolverines, does this cement them among the nation's elite?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:20 PM)

Minnesota is top-10. Gophers already among the elite. ... You want me to pick? I don't have one yet. But I expect to see a great game.

michael (dallas)

After watching A @ M beat Kentucky all I hear is that the Aggies are mediocre team. I know they don't have the talent of Kentucky or some others, but the last two games they played where the best they played all year.Your opinion? thanks.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:23 PM)

I think the Aggies beat a mediocre team. I think they might be one of best teams within a fleet of mediocre SEC programs. That's all. If they play this way against Florida, Mizzou, Ole Miss ... I might have a different opinion. But the SEC is so low right now, it's hard to elevate many teams after "big" wins.

Kenny (West Virginia)

Why is Ryan Kelly being treated like he's All-American? He's a good player, not great. They would have lost to NC State with him. And likely will next month.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:25 PM)

You want opinion or fact? Fact: Kelly had the ACC's top plus-minus ratio (plus-190). Fact: Kelly is a 6-11 stretch-4 who's shot 52.1 percent from the 3-point line. Fact: His defense has improved from last season. ... Yes, that's a different game with him in there.

Scott (AZ)

Best team on the west coast is...?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:25 PM)

1. Gonzaga 2. San Diego State 3. UCLA 4. Oregon

Cprice (WA)

Do you see UK missing the tourney this year as a real possibility?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:27 PM)

Yes. I don't think they'll miss the Big Dance, though. But it's a possibility. Find the Wildcats' signature win. Maryland? Maybe. .. Who else? They've played some really talented teams. ...But hanging out with the Kardashians doesn't make you famous. Wildcats haven't proven anything yet. ... and yes, I watch the Kardashians.

Zach (Denver)

Iowa State lost in OT in Allen Fieldhouse, but NO ONE wins in Allen Fieldhouse. ISU looked good, are the cyclones for real this year?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:29 PM)

I don't know if they're "for real." They've taken tough losses against good teams. That's the truth. But effort doesn't count for much at this level. They played tough at Kansas. ... I want to see if they can use that to build serious momentum in the Big 12 going forward.

Neil (New York)

What do you really think of Indiana?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:29 PM)

I think Indiana might be the best team in America in April.

Charles (San Jose)

Myron, you dodged the Pac-12 favorite question.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:30 PM)

I didn't "dodge" it. You should see this question queue. ... I still expect Arizona to win the league. But I could see UCLA and Oregon fighting for the title, too.

Joey (North Carolina)

Do you think NC State will come to play At Maryland, or do you think they will have a big win hangover?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:32 PM)

Well, if you're a Wolfpack fan .. that's the question you've pondered since that Duke win. N.C. State has had trouble building momentum in recent years. And as good as Leslie was against Duke ... he's followed up big performances with average production before. I think they'll come to play. But I won't be surprised if N.C. State loses.

Luke (Kansas City)

Is Ben McLemore the #1 pick in the draft? His jump shot combined with his athleticism have scouts drooling

Myron Medcalf
  (2:33 PM)

I don't know. I guess that depends on the team that gets the No. 1 pick. Is he a lottery pick? Definitely. ... At this level, I could see McLemore ending the year as national freshman of the year and a true candidate for national player of the year.

Phil (Boston)

Who, in your opinion, is currently the best wing player in the nation? Or at least playing the best ball.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:34 PM)

True wing? ... I like McLemore. Tim Hardaway Jr. has to be in the conversation. ... But I like Shabazz Muhammad, too.

MWC (out west)

Myron, are you going to the UNLV/SDSU game Wednesday?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:35 PM)

I wish.

Adam (Denver)

Do you think Kelly Olynyk will be an All-American by the end of the season? Also do you think he'll return for a senior year at Gonzaga or jump to the NBA after the season?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:36 PM)

Yes, I could see him finishing the year as All-American. Gonzaga could sweep the WCC. His numbers continue to improve. ... And if you're a 7-footer having a great year ... what's the point of coming back? I think he'll go, especially if he maintains this trajectory.

Vinnie (NYC)

Totally agree with Kenny. NC State lost Deshawn Painter for a personal hardship, can they credit their losses on that?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:38 PM)

You didn't lose him in the middle of the season. so my response is "no way." ... Kelly matters. Just check the numbers. But N.C. State gets credit for the win. Not saying they don't deserve it. I'm not an asterisk guy.

crashandflash (San Diego)

What's the upside for Crieghton this year? Seems like they have a very winnable schedule from here on out.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:41 PM)

Yep, they're clearly the best team in the MVC. And Doug McDermott should be the national player of the year favorite right now. I love what Echenique does inside. They're a versatile team. But the MVC is still solid. Wichita State matchup this weekend will tell us a lot more about Creighton.

Jeff (Milwaukee)

Why is no one talking about Marquette? With their upcoming schedule, their game @ Louisville in 2 weeks could be between 2 undefeated teams in conference.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:43 PM)

I think folks are talking about Marquette. But you can't ignore the fact that they're 3-0 under bizarre circumstances. Weird finishes in wins over Pitt, UConn and Georgetown. I don't know that they've played great basketball thus far. But a win is a win, I guess.

Steve (CT)

Considering no one knows today when the Catholic 7 will leave, why doesn't the Big East throw a big celebration of it's history during the Big East tournament? The conference needs to acknowledge it's amazing acommplishments over the league's history. Starting with Jim Boeheim's 900+ wins. Why be sad? Celebrate as there will never be another conference like it! Only problem, UConn can't attend.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:45 PM)

It is sad. So many great memories. And realignment is changing everything. ... I just think it's difficult to celebrate with so many unknowns. ... All I know is that I'll be glued to the TV for the next Big East tourney. Always classic. ... I just wish it didn't have to end this way.

MWC (way out west)

Myron, it's kind of weird having 3 MWC teams ranked and no UK or UNC...Have a nice day.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:47 PM)

It's certainly interesting. But the Mountain West is tough. Colorado State had a tremendous comeback against SDSU over the weekend. Air Force took UNLV into overtime. ... Can't wait to see how it all shakes out as conference play continues.

John (Birmingham)

I'm not sure which one is worst - you watching the Kardashians or Eamonn watching Jersey Shore. Please tell me I will never have to hear about Jason King watching Honey Boo Boo or Finding Bigfoot.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:48 PM)

I'm not trying to turn this into a discussion. I used a Kardashian metaphor so I felt it was appropriate to disclose my TV habits. That's all.

Tim (ATL)

Is the winner of the Oregon / UCLA game the favorite in the Pac-12, or do you think it should still be Arizona?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:50 PM)

Hard to pick a "favorite" right now. But again, I still see Arizona winning the conference. UCLA, however, is playing the best basketball in the Pac-12 and they have the league's best player in Shabazz Muhammad. Oregon is obviously talented too. Those three teams will have to scrap for the title. But Colorado could bounce back. Arizona State could surprise a lot of people, too. But it looks like a three-team fight.

Terry (Columbia)

When will people start to realize that Frank Haith just isn't a very good coach?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:52 PM)

Oh .. now he's not a good coach because he lost to an underrated Ole Miss team on the road without his star forward? Got it.

Sean (Colorado)

Myron, Wisconsin pulled off their best effort of the season just when everyone thought they were an afterthought in the B1G. While losing Gasser is still a devastating blow, do you think the young guards (Marshall, Jackson) and Dekker will develop enough to get keep Badgers in the top part of the conference with a shot at advancing in March?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:54 PM)

All I could think on Saturday was "Bo Ryan is going to do it again." It was difficult to envision the Badgers finishing in the top tier a month ago. But that was a very dominant win. More proof that the Badgers will always be dangerous at the Kohl Center. So a top half finish could happen. It's Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio State .... and then we need to have a conversation after that.

Robby (cincinnati)

I know Cincinnati has struggled lately but bounced back with a double digit win at rutgers saterday night. This team was ranked 8th not to long ago. I believe this bearcat team is special and can make a real deep run in the tournament behind the very underrated pg Cashmiere Wright. What do u think of the bearcats and how far do u believe they will go in the tournament this year?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:56 PM)

I think it's the same story with Cincy. One of the best defensive units in America (fifth in Ken Pomeroy's efficiency ratings) but inconsistent offense. That's a formula for a roller coaster. So it's difficult for me to project a deep run when I've watched enough Cincy basketball to think that they could lose their first game in the NCAA tourney because that offense could stall. Again.

GBK (Lincoln Park)

Myron, it seemed like Michigan was rattled by their first big game on the road (people forget how young Michigan is - Hardaway Jr is only player with a lot of minutes that is a junior, mostly freshmen/sophomores). It will be tough to win on the road in the Big 10, but how do you see them playing going forward?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:59 PM)

It's difficult to win on the road in every conference. But the Big Ten is so deep that teams don't have any "easy games." That's what separates this league. ... I think Michigan lost to an Ohio State team that played like it was in a "must win" situation to maintain its BT title hopes. The Buckeyes were hungry. And they were facing their rivals. But Wolverines fought back in the second half. They're still one of the nation's top 5 or 6 squads. And I could still see Beilein and Co. in Atlanta.

Cprice (WA)

I don't feel like Arizona is a top 20 team. Your thoughts?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:01 PM)

After one loss? On the road. To an Oregon team with a win over UNLV. I don't buy it. Wildcats beat Florida, SDSU, Colorado, Miami. .... They're definitely top-20. Seriously?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:02 PM)

Well, it's been real everyone. Thank you for joining me. Let's talk again next Monday. ... If I missed you, feel free to reach out on Twitter (@MedcalfByESPN) or email me at mmedcalf3030@gmail.com ... Enjoy the rest of your Monday.
