We'll get rolling here in a sec...
Any word on Aaron Colvin entering the draft?
No official word yet, but if an announcement comes in the next hour, you all will be the first to know. Couple people told me they saw him in class this morning, so that's a good sign he's coming back. Then again, no announcement has come yet, which makes me think this is not 100 percent yet one way or the other.
Jake. Great article on Stoops today. I got to OU as an undergrad in 98, John Blake's last season. Since that time OU has had less than 10 wins in a season 3 times ('99, '05, and '09). Each time OU has had a season under 10 wins, OU has roared back. Even if OU goes 9-4 next year, hasn't Stoops earned some slack? Furthermore, shouldn't people have some confidence that he'll put a winner on the field? I don't get this "Stoops is complacent" talk.I love OU, but it's unrealistic in today's CFB to expect a title game appearance every year (like we did 2000 to 2004 or Alabama is doing now) isn't it?
Thanks, Tony. I'd be interested to see what others thought of Stoops' comments. He was very positive about the state of the program, though acknowledged the expectations, which is competing for a national title every 4 seasons. It will be five in 2013.
Jake, will Alex Ross make an impact next season? I always love to see Oklahoma kids doing well for OU.
Alex has a very decent chance to be the 3rd RB behind Clay/Williams. Ross runs with power, and has some speed and athleticism too. He could be the favorite to be the starting RB in 2014.
what do you think of the potential nebraska oklahoma regular season game
It's still 8 years away, so I really don't think much.
rank ou's top 3 toughest games on the schedue next year?
1. at Notre Dame, 2. at OSU, 3. Texas
Since Tim Kish is responsible for linebackers and OU will not have any in two years...is there a reason to keep him on staff???
Well, he actually has two in Dominique Alexander and Jordan Evans, though neither is a traditional linebacker, and either one could end up at different positions. The Mastrogiovanni decommittment hurt, but I'm not convinced that was Kish's fault. Mastro had his eye on A&M for awhile, and was waiting for a spot to open up, which it did when Mike Mitchell committed to Ohio State. I understand the frustration, though. LB recruiting or play on the field has not been very good under Kish.
whos the vocal or team leader on a seemingly young defense next year?
Colvin, if he comes back. If not, who knows? Will be a completely new defense in that case.
whos this years freshman or redshirt freshman breakout player in your opinion?
Several options here. Trevor Knight, obviously, if he wins the QB job, and maybe him anyway if he doesn't. Jordan Wade could be a starter at DT, and a key one at that. Incoming freshmen Hatari Byrd and Ahmad Thomas, who is enrolling early, could be immediate impact guys at safety, where OU is depleted.
When is Colvin going to announce to stay or go?
He said he was going to today, but so far nothing. The deadline to declare is tomorrow.
Is this the worst recruiting class OU has had under Stoops? No linebackers? How many recruits do you think OU will finish with?
It will rank among his lowest, in terms of recruiting rankings.
Also, why did the 4-star DB not have a host for this recruiting weekend? Appears the program is unorganized?
Not sure what to make of that. Whoever the host was -- and we're not sure -- bailed apparently all of a sudden, which is sort of unprecedented. Not good.
If I am an OU fan on the ledge, give me some positive reasons for 2013 so I can get off that ledge.
The Big 12 is wide open, and OU can win it, which would set the table for a national title run in 2014.
It really was not fun watching this offense play this year. Sure their were shootouts, but not what wins NC's. JH and JN said they believe in this offense, so I would like them come out and defend it. It works with so so defenses but not at all with a good D. ie, ND, KSU and T A&M.
If you didn't like watching the offense, I can't imagine what you thought of the defense...
Jake, only 3 LB on scholarship next year, and OU has zero commitments. Can we expect the same defense using 7 DB's as we saw this year?
Let's hope not.
Right now, I feel like Oklahoma could finish 5th and get a tourney bid in a subpar big 12. Who would have to step up for that to happen and what are some big games to watch out for that could provide the rpi and sos boost?
First basketball question on the chat in maybe history. OU is looking like a tourney team. Fifth would probably do it, though fourth would feel safer to me, given how the Big 12 is down. Kansas and Kansas State at home are big games. Win 1 or 2 of those and OU's going to be in good shape.
Who is the favorite to win the starting qb job next year
Blake Bell's job to lose.
Colvin has seems to turn into quite a prima donna over the last year. Seems like he loves the attention of not announcing his intentions. Was he the player that didn't show as a host for the DB recruit.
I don't know what's going on with Colvin with this decision, but he's no prima donna. He's a good kid, hard worker sharp, too. He'll be a good leader for this defense if he comes back. And no, he wasn't the one who bailed. Colvin was in Owasso/Tulsa this weekend.
Bennett Okotcha just tweeted Officially #14 like the bro @AColvin14 (Looks like AC is gone)
Okotcha is at another school now, so it makes no difference what number he wears.
Do you agree with the comments made on College Football Live (pertaining to the Oklahoma defense)? This does not seem like the Oklahoma team we should expect year in and year out. They do not seem as relentless on defense like they were before.
I didn't see the CFB Live comments, but this is not the Oklahoma defense that Stoops' club dominated with earlier in the 2000s. Seems to be lacking the attitude, the players, the consistency.
At this point, is OU still in the running for Laquon Treadwell? Seems like Ole Miss may be pulling away ...
Sounds like it's between Ole Miss and OK State.
I do not understand why Landry Jones's name has not been brought up in NFL draft talks. Any insight?
Anyone see the Dan Marino SI cover that was floating around Twitter today? Those were the days... Not a great QB draft, nothing like last year. Might not be a QB taken in the first round altogether. Landry seems like an early 2nd rounder to me.
I agree im not a big tim kish fan at all!!! Do you see us keeping him much longer.
Yes. He's Mike Stoops' guy.
Defensive linemen! THEY DO EXIST! Thoughts on the newest commits in the trenches? And what do you think about the chance Treadwell picks OU over Ole Miss? Recruiting seems to be on the right track, hope it keeps up!
Charles Walker, the DT that just committed, didn't have an impressive offer list, but our evaluators really liked him, and his upside (and our evaluators know their stuff!). So I like the pickup. DT is such a difficult position to project, and there are so many busts at that position, maybe more than any other. Treadwell is down to OSU or Ole Miss, IMO.
How many times have you answered "Who's the favorite to win the QB job next year?" Curious.
About 1/10th the number of times it's been asked already.
QB could be an interesting story come spring. Who's in the driver's seat now, and who do you expect to take the most snaps there in 2013?
Bell is in the driver's seat. I think Knight has the most potential to unseat him, but we'll see.
Is Oklahoma still a premier program, I cant remeber the last time they won a meaningful game?
OU lost all three games against teams that finished in the Top 15 this year. Did beat Florida State last year on the road. That was pretty big.
Any chance we see a random improvement from the defense like there was from 2008 to 2009?
Is Gerald McCoy re-enrolling?
Whatever happened to Bennet Okotcha anyway? I heard other players comparing him to Ed Reed during preseason then disappeared. Sure could use him at safety.
Got hurt, missed spring, then transferred out to UTSA.
Seems like we are getting some recruiting "steals" from powerhouses like UTEP, Iowa State, Memphis, and UNLV...who's the next 2 star that we can switch to OU? Recruiting on the right track....please...OU cancels a Junior Day to concentrate on this recruiting class and then they have a player host not show for a recruit. Program is totally unorganized at the moment.
When you put it that way...
Does the OU style of offense make him a System QB. And thats why he isn't getting any respect as a elite QB
Nah, I think the senseless turnovers and happy feet in the pocket have more to do with it than the system. But Landry is closer to Sam than he is to some of those Tech QBs that were true system players.
Jake, just wanted to say thanks for dropping OU science on us every week. Keep up the good chat!
No prob, T-Dub.
Stoops commented last week about incorporating the QB run game into the offense. If the QB is Bell I could see it like K-State, but I don't think Bell could run effectively in the offense A&M/Redskins/Niners run - that would have to be run by Knight - am I wrong?
You are not wrong, and I think that's why Knight is enticing as an option.
How surprised will people be, after seeing that Bell is a very good passer? Seems like he's been stereotyped as a Tebow like QB.
OU actually recruited Bell for his arm, not his wheels.
Jr. College players............Really. It shows that this staff just can't bring in the talent.
Lance Mitchell and Pasha Jackson and Torrance Marshall were all jucos...
Jake..heard any rumblings about anyone shipping out???? Thought maybe Finch since he is getting no play at all.
No rumblings yet. Finch is in good standing. Heck he saved the day by hosting Tahaan Goodman, when his original host bailed.
Remember when OU got kids that Florida, USC, Texas were after? Now we are getting kids that North Texas, Smu ect...Were in on. What happened?
They're still getting some of those guys (Hatari Byrd, Keith Ford, etc...)
Been reading about possible assistant coaching changes, any idea who?
Just rumors. Stoops said he doesn't anticipate any changes.
What are your thoughts on D.J. Ward? I'm from Lawton and have watched this kid live in practice and in games. I think he can be a difference maker by his second year, which would be 2015.
I like him. My only reservation is that he's been out of football a year now. May take some time to wipe off that rust.
Ou's recruiting is not at all what it use to be. Jr. College players and 1-2 star recruits surely isn't what this staff wants. If they cannot recruit out of highschool we are in trouble. Sure OU has had some Jr. College players pan out, but very few.
The two jucos they landed were guys that a lot of people wanted, though.
There are not that many reasons to be optimistic about next year on the defensive side of the ball - at least three big secondary losses, nobody who looks like an all-conference player in the front 4/5/6/7, etc. Would it be wrong to suggest that perhaps the best reason for optimism is that there will be a bunch of turnover? Obviously Jefferson, Hurst, and Harris will be major losses, but up front it seems like some turnover might not be so bad. It obviously wasn't working last year or this year, and even though guys like King, Walker, McFarland, etc. were not bad players individually, it wasn't working as a unit. Maybe a reboot isn't so bad.
Stoops suggested as much. Billy Donovan and Stoops were once talking about all the players Donovan had returning. But Donovan then said he actually wished that wasn't the case. Stoops said he's always remembered that and agrees in certain cases.
Jake, can any of the recruiting commitments we have be starters for next season? Also, will any redshirts that we haven't seen in games have a big impact next year.
Hatari Byrd and Ahmad Thomas have the best chances because of the dearth of proven commodities at safety.
please tell us that the offense will change next year. More balance, run and pass. It had real hard times when it faced good defenses. This won't win in the big games ie..ND, KSU, T A&M
I think it's going to change. It has to. More QB run game, maybe more two back sets.
The pressure is really starting to build for Bob Stoops, at least from and rank and file type fan. How many years can Bob Survive without delivering a NC? Will boosters remain loyal so long as Stoops is able to produce 10 wins and the occational B12 champ and BCS bowl? Will Stoops want to remain at a job where anything short of a NC will be perceived as a failure?
As long as Stoops keeps winning 10 games in a "down" year, his job will never be in jeopardy.
I'm very disappointed with the way ESPN covered Bob Stoops handling of Jalen Saunders. This player was arrested for possession of Marijuana and Stoops never provided any rationale as to why it was acceptable/correct for Saunders to play vs TAMU. All Stoops said was something about the circumstances in this situation (as opposed to the Stacey McGee arrest) were different. Perhaps this is true, but as journalists you people needed to push and prod harder on this issue. ESPN took what Stoop said as face value--either because you believe him or to simply not upset him and maintain your access to the team. Irrespective of your reasons, this approach is unacceptable and unbecoming of genuine journalists.
We can't force Stoops to give rationale if he doesn't want to. We wrote about the story multiple times. What would you suggest?
I'd just like to second what T-Dub said above. These chats make my Mondays bearable!
Ha, glad to help.
Is it possible that Knight looks so good because of the D hes going against? I'd be pretty good against that D and I'm 47
Ha, fair point.
Weren't those 3 juco players you named all LB's. We don't use LB's anymore. Nice Try.....................
Another fair point. Man, you guys are on a roll.
What OU players that were on the roster in the fall semester have transfered away? Also, do we have any new semester enrollees (from other colleges or high school)
None so far. DJ Ward/Ahmad Thomas are early enrollees, as is JC OT Josiah St. John.
Jake, did Drew decide to stay or transfer?
Hasn't decided yet.
Do you see a lot of Read-Option or Pistol coming down the pike with guys like Bell and Knight ready to take the reins?
Do you get the feel that Bob may be in a little bit of urgency heading into next season. I know he's saying all the positive things, but what kind of a "feel" do you get?
I don't feel anything different. Bob seems to have the same "urgency" as any other year.
did quincy russell get enrolled?
Jake, in your article it seems like Bob is spinning the OU program, he used to coach by the NO EXCUSES motto, sounds like he is making some and that means the team can too.
He was very positive, that's for sure.
What is the point of hosting a recruit, especially an elite recruit, if you are not going to provide a proper host? OU has botched this recruiting class in so many ways that it would take a senior thesis legth paper to expline all of their mistakes.
I'd be interested in reading that senior thesis paper
Jake, I heard some DB from notre dame left and enrolled at OU. I think his name is tee Shepard. Could u clarify?
Yep, that's his name. Had some academic hurdles to clear to enroll, which have not been cleared yet.
Why should Drew stay? transfer and play. Could not blame him at all
Stoops said as much last week. I agree.
Who are they going after at LB to fix the problem
Not a lot to go after at this point, unless they can flip someone.
Do I have a right to be frustrated? Everyone keeps saying OU fans are spoiled, and that Bob does a great job. Bob comes out and makes a lot of points to back up his coaching performance. I don't feel at all better. I feel like what we are doing isn't getting us closer to a title. And I don't see anything being changed to make it better.Am I out of bounds here and just need to shut up and be glad with what we got?
OU fans can be unreasonable, but you have right to be frustrated. It's been four seasons now since OU was a serious player in the title race, and I don't see it happening next year, either. That's not good enough, given the standards in Norman.
Why is there such emphasis on this years recruiting class? One minute you hear "experts" saying how recruiting is no science and don't pay too much attention to them. The next....OMG this is the worse class ever. Will someone please make up my mind for me??
OU's best class under Stoops is the one that included Jermie Calhoun, Stephen Good, RJ Washington, Justin Johnson, Lamar Harris. Ultimately, recruiting rankings don't win games. It's a measure of the potential of the class that's signed more than anything else.
What happened to OU's recruiting. It has fallen way out of the top 10
At least it hasn't fallen out of the Top 20. There's some half-glass full for ya.
Jake, how much longer does Bob Stoops have consider how poorly his teams perform in the big games?
Longer than you are probably hoping.
What current committed players or current players do you see changing positions?
At the moment, no one. Stoops was asked that last week, and he said he didn't anticipate anyone switching up. The defense could use some of the offense's talent, but I don't think Mike Stoops is going to get any of it.
Do you think P.L. Lindley gets a shot at MLB next year? I think he would be a better fit since he's 240 lbs.. dont you? Then put Shannon and Nelson at OLB... I'm no expert, I just think that would work out better
Lindley actually played some DE this year. I don't know what the D is going to look like next year, but I do know that Frank Shannon will be the starting MLB.
Jake..would you agree if some younger guys get playing experience and things come together...2014 looks much better than 2013??? Don't we lose quite a bit of O-line after this year??
Hard to project, but 2014 looks better at QB and defense. Ikard, Evans, Irwin would all be gone, but with Darlington, Nila, Shead and the OTs, OU should be in decent shape up front.
You said not any LB's to go after. D.J. Green is a 3 star ranked right there with mastiogivanni and Brett wade. He's still out there.
Didn't say there weren't any. Just not many.
Jake, how many spots are left and what positions do you think will they choose to fill them?
They're definitely targeting DB depth. Could also use a LB, but who knows if they will add another. They could add another WR. At this point, it's about adding best players available, honestly.
Will Geno Grissom start at DE next year? The 2013 TE situation doesn't look any better than 2012, does it?
No, it looks better. McNamara and Grant will be a year older, at least. They weren't ready to play last year. Maybe they will next year. Grissom is probably the favorite alongside Chuka to start DE next year.
I look at next year's team and see some optimism others might not. The year they won the National Championship, they were not in the top 15 pre-season. They do have some tough games next year, but with the proper preparation off of what they learned this year, do you see a championship game run as more than just a dream for OU fans?
Odds are against it, but there's not a game on the schedule OU can't win, either.
is striker at safety or LB?
When was the last time we say an OU player wow us on the defensive side of the ball? I'll say TJ and Gerald McCoy. That's about it.
Frank Alexander and Ronnell Lewis were pretty good, too.
Agree or disagree: the Sooners face a crossroads now. But that crossroads is not substantively different from what they faced in 2006 or 2010. In both years, the Sooners followed up disappointing seasons. In 2006, the Rhett Bomar situation left OU scrambling, and in 2010, OU had a terrible running game and a lot of big pieces gone. Both times, the Sooners responded with a strong season. 2013 is not guaranteed to be the same, but we HAVE been here before.
Both those teams had the kind of character you want in a team. I like the leadership next year: Bell, Ikard, Millard, potentially Colvin. We'll see.
Tomorrow is the deadline, is Colvin coming back? It feels like he is to me
The chat came and went without an announcement. Check SoonerNation for the latest on Colvin and more... We'll do the chat again next Monday, same time, same place. Until then, have a great week.
