We're going the full hour for the first time in about a month since we;re through the holiday season and I don't have to do radio with my boy Nate Newton today....Let's roll
Thanks for your work. Please tell me the switch back to the 4-3 is a move to help the defense not a salary cap decision? Time is running out on the Cowboys, is their thinking that they don't have enough cap space to resign Spencer and cannot find an adequate replacement so they are switching to a scheme where they can absorb Spencer's loss?
We haven't gotten any definitive answers about the 4-3. Those will come next week at the Senior Bowl, when we get to talk to Jerry and Jason for the first time since all of these decisions were made. Here's the deal: You hope they just decided the 4-3 was the best scheme to win in the NFL - not because Kiffin is who they wanted to hire, so they changed the scheme to accommodate him. That would be beyond stupid. This is a jerry move. No way Garrett would make this big of a philosophical change after one week since he was too busy during the season to deal with all of the ramifications of a move like this
What's going on JJT,two questions I know it's early but with the Boys switching to a 4-3 should they still draft the best available no matter the position and if the Honey Badger is available 5th round or later should we take a chance on him he is a playmaker
You SHOULD always draft the best player. You can never go wrong taking the best player. Cowboys have no interest in players with drug issues
JJT, Why does everybody assume Anthony Spencer is gone now that Dallas switched to the Tampa 2 defense? Didn't Tony Dungy win a superbowl in Indy with Mathis and Freeney at DE and they're both smaller than either Ware or Spencer.
The Cowboys are already 20+ million over the salary cap and Spencer wanted close to Ware money BEFORE he had a great season. If u franchise him, he'll cost $10.6 million, I think. Bottom line: They're going to have a had time fitting his cash under the cap and in the 4-3, he;d be dropping into coverage quite a bit, which wouldn't be a strength
How worried are you of change to 4-3 Defense and Ware becoming a DE?
yep. The 4-3 DE is a much more physical position because you're locked onto 330-pound LT every play. As a standup OLB he's much more of an attacking player because he's off the line of scrimmage instead of being on the line of scrimmage.
Did Jason Garrett lose complete power over his staff?
Kind of. Kiffin will hire the defensive staff. If Callahan calls plays, then Garrett can make the hires on the offensive staff. If another play-caller is selected, then that guy might get to make the hires. Either way, his control and authority has definitely been slashed
How do you think the Stars & the Mavericks are Looking This Season?
I didn't think Mavs were a playoff team before the season and I haven't seen anything to change my mind. I honestly haven't even thought about the Stars. Check back 10 games into the season.
I don't think anyone would've mistaken the Dallas Defense for the 2000 Ravens. However, firing Rob Ryan and changing the defense to a 4-3 seems to be a knee-Jerk reaction considering most of the problems were on offense. Is this a just a case of Jerry Jones not wanting to admit he was wrong about the football structure (Him being GM and the HC having to be a coordinator)? Also, can this be considered the start of a rebuilding year since the core of the team, mostly, is over 30? It will take a couple of drafts/offseasons to get the right personnel for the 4-3 and fix the O-Line, which seemed to be the bigger problem.
Here's the deal bro: When you finish 8-8 in consecutive seasons you must sell fans hope so they will continue to buy tickets and fill the stadium. You do that by firing the coach, the quarterback, the defensive coordinator or the offensive coordinator or play-caller.
could cowboys keep spencer, if salary cap is high
they seem ready to let him walk because his skill set isn't worth the money in the 4-3
Any reason to be optmistic for next year?
sure. DC have a lot of young players - Dez, sean lee, carter, the cornerbacks, Tyron Smith, Murray, dwayne Harris, Miles and Murray off the top of my head - who are younger than 28 and can play pretty well. List wouldn't have been nearly that long off the top before the season
Now the cowboys are switching to the 4-3 defense, the defensive ends will be around 250-260lbs. So will the cowboys have to get bigger defensive tackles now to combat having undersize ends?
probably. You can't be small across the front
Who will be the 3rd linebacker in this new system? Conner? Wilber? draft pick?
no idea. They just changed systems last week. I don't think they know
Do you think the draft will primarily be defensive now that the cowboys have to get players to fit the scheme?
nope. Best player. They have lot of holes
Which Players do you think this defense will benefit the most?
scandrick will be positioned to make a lot of plays as the slot in this scheme. Whether he does or not, we'll have to wait and see
Lee and carter will also thrive
any chance jerry is firing and hiring coaches despite Garretts approval to force him to resign? rumor is he is stripping him from play calling & would like his bro(tight ends coach) fired...
U don't have to force him to resign. Fire him, if you don't want him
Do you expect to see Joe D back next season? And do you think this is because he is a deserving coach? Or does Jerry feel obligated because of the neck damage Joe D suffered a couple of years ago?
i think there will be a new ST coach
Why does everyone was joh garrett out as tight end coach?
name one player who thrived under his tutelage. It shouldn't take long. Marty B much more effective in NY. Phillips regressed and Hanna didn't do much this season. Don't forget Scott Chandler who didn't do much here in 2010 and has caught 93 passes for nearly 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns in Buffalo. Think he wouldn't have been quality backup, then wouldn't had to spend pick on Hanna. See how this stuff snowballs?
Your thoughts on the playoffs so far and who do you have going to the SuperBowl?
SF and NE. San Fran will beat NE because they can rush with 4 and drop 7 in coverage and they'll be physical
just asking. Will we look at NE dynasty any differently if they lose three SB in a row? Just asking
Whom will have the play calling duty for the cowboys next year?
Callahan has done it before and it would be the smoothest transition in the building. But it's not like he's earned a promotion. Lesser of several evils
Any Chance Monte Brings in Ronde Barber to help on defense?
i could see him being DB assistant, if he's done playing. No chance as a player
With the a switch to the 4-3, wouldn't Ernie Sims be able to play the weak side LB spot? Him with Lee and Carter would make a strong LB corps, wouldn't you think?
It certainly gives him a role he didn't have before. Maybe he could play weakside and Carter strongside. That said, Sims is just a guy. Better as backup than starter
Happy New Year Jean to you and your family. My questions to you is, what moves would Jerry Jones have to make in this years draft to pick Eddie Lacey, Chance Warmack, and or Barret Jones. I know I'm asking alot but the Cowboys O-line and Running Back positions needs some physciality/toughness to it. Have a great day Jean!
thanks much but I don't deal with the draft until FA ends and we can see what holes have been plugged and what holes remain
I think Bruce Carter will Thrive in this defense because it benefits his strengths, but im worried about Sean Lee. do you think he can be the came player in this defense?
Lee will be fine. He's smart, he can hit and he can run down the seam 20 yards and still make plays, which is what MLB in this scheme must do. How many plays have you seen Lee make in passing game? He's a straight baller
All the cowboys corners on the roster are man to man press guys and we've seen them struggle in zone schemes this season with rob. So do you think Monte Will Adjust his scheme to the players rather than the other way around?
nope. You can play press or off in this scheme. You just have to be a good tackler because you get attacked in the flat with TEs and RBs. Carr is fine, but Claiborne must get much better
If the cowboys need cap space to sign spencer; who could be some players thats cut to make room for spencer?
Free, ratliff and austin will get longest looks. They can also restructure some deals. But in 4-3, Spencer isn't worth the money he commands
Do you think if the Cowboys can't afford to resign Anthony Spencer that they might go after Osi Umenoya?
they could, but they're so tight against cap, they're not gonna have much money and he wants to get paid
Do you see any way possible that the Rangers could get in the Justin Upton sweepstakes?
sure. high stakes game of chicken right now. Clearly, Arizona doesn't want him. It's a matter, to me, of when they swing a deal to Texas or Atlanta for him.
No question people who follow you on twitter should already know lol. Just wanna say thanks for always tweeting back and being a real dude.
I keep hearing that the Kiffin hiring makes the Carr signing and the Claiborne pick worthless since corners aren't nearly as important as safeties in the Tampa-2. If this is the case why don't they convert them to safeties? Carr played it pretty effectively albeit in a limited role in the beginning of the year and Claiborne seems to fit the mold size wise.
poppycock. they an player CB and play it well in this scheme
Is Norv Turner offically with CLE? if so who is the best fit for OC? Callahan?
ultimately, I think Callahan will do it because that's the smoothest transition
JJT Nfl.com reporting with McCoy being hired by the chargers Lovie smith maybe out of options for head coaching jobs can you see him joining Kiffin with the cowboys?
nope. As soon as cowboys lose 2 games, folks willbe trying to make Lovie head coach. Too threatening for Garrett. Besides, he should be able to get DC job - not position coach
Which direction, in your opinion, do you think the Cowboys should go as far as offense is concerned? Example: New OC, QB Coach, west coast, etc.
irrelevant to me until OL is FIXED.
If your the Mavs, do you have any interest in a knuckle head like DeMarcus Cousins or Rudy Gay who may not be worth the 3 year max deal he has remaining?
max deals are for superstars. He ain't no superstar. He's not a piece who gets u over the hump. If he was, they wouldn't be dealing him.
Do you believe the NFL may have passed Kiffen by when he gets back or he will be able to adapt, i.e. having to deal w/ the read option and more of a sophisticated passing game then when he was last in the league?
no way to know until he gets here. Seriously.
Any chance we can get fans to boycott the Stars' first game? It's such a conundrum...I love the world's best hockey but hate the NHL. #poppycock
it's a free country. get it started
What is the worse scandal and which affected the outcome of the sport more, Lance Armstrong and others with cycling or Bonds/Sosa/McGwire/Clemens with baseball?
sorry, I really haven't about it. I don't really care. So much cheating go on that I'm apathetic about it
JJT, why do you think Cowboys fans seem so negative about Tony Romo? I think he's a fine quarterback. As a Vikings fan, I know what it's like to have poor quarterbacking!
1 playoff win in 7 seasons as starter. Period.
JJT,Why do you flip flop more than a fish out of water on your opinions on the Cowboys and Jason Garrett?
I haven't flipped a single time. I like Garrett. I think he can and will be a good coach but if Jerry is going to neuter him and not commit to him, he should fire him now and move on because he's not putting him in a position to succeed. I've been consistent in that answer. The worst thing Jerry could do would be not pursuing Sean Payton with everything he had when he was briefly available and then firing Garrett the next year. Garrett is process-oriented like me, but Jerry is results-oriented. 8-8 meant no progress to him, so he's taken the action he's taken
With DeCamillis out of the running in Chicago. Does he stay in Dallas or does he go somewhere else?
if i were betting, I'd say somewhere else
When are you getting a Jagr Stars jersey?
nope. No. 10 sweater, if I was wearing one, which I'm not. And won't.
In 2009 the NFCE played the AFCW. The Cowboys played at KC (Miles Austin's 250 yd game) and hosted OAK (Thanksgiving.) In 2013, the NFCE will play the AFCW again. Cowboys are going to KC and OAK coming to Dallas. Do you know why? They switched locales with DEN (at in '09 home in '13) and SD (home in 09 at in 13.)
nope. We'll find out though
Blessings JJT - Thanks for hosting today's chat. I think we're all assuming that Jerry's next move will be to hire someone to call plays on offense. What will this do to the dynamics of Coach Garrett's relationship with Romo and the the rest of the team? And how hard will Garrett fight to persuade Jerry not to make this kind of move?
nothing cause I think it will be callahan
JJT, I go tot be honest. Given Jerry is as hands on as he is, I see today's Dallas Cowboys as I see Al Davis's Oakland Raiders from 1990 to today in that (once Garrett is gone) no respectable coach would even remotely consider coming here to coach because of Jerry Jones. We would have to find a young, eager coach every time and hope for the best. Am I off base at all on this?
You mentioned the Cowboys steer away from players with drug issues, and I hate to break it to you, but at least 50% of the players in the NFL and NBA smoke weed in the offseason
they steer away from players dumb enough to fail a test they know is coming
Who will be Demarco Murray's primary backup moving forward? Do they need to go out and get someone?
he ain't on the team right now
Hey JJT, I like Romo but when you see Wilson, Kaepernick, Luck, Griffin, Dalton, etc, in the playoffs isn't it time to draft a new QB in the early rounds?
you should be bringing in a QB every year. Don't forget Romo wasn't an answer when he arrived
JJT, Has Pete Carmichael, the Saints offensive coordinator whose contract expired, been getting mentioned for the play calling job?
they can certainly look at him. It's a matter of whether callahan will do it or not
I can save the scouting department a lot of time and money: Get Mel Kiper's big board, put it on a white board in a room, when the pick gets to you, you take the best Alabama player available.
pass that on
u can find me on Twitter @JJT_ESPNDallas
I saw MacMahon retweet a Matt Mosley tweet about him hearing that it will be Callahan who will take over as playcaller. How valid are those whispers? Do you think Callahan will add some tweaks to the system to resemble some of his West Coast scheme, or would he stick solely to JG's offense?
I wrote about it last week. I don't think it's a big secret he's getting consideration because that makes a lot of sense. He'll tweak system but terminology will remain the same
Dallas may be 18M over the cap. What no Dallas reporter has yet to state is that Romo's looming extension, cutting Free post June 1, and redoing Ware/Witten/Austin/Carr's contracts will put them about 17-18M under. Players get that money pushed into future signing bonus years. They get that money up front though! Players redo their contracts all the time. Bottom line is, Dallas has to do it just to be able to sign 1 or maybe 2 FA's. Thoughts please JJT! Everyone is so doom and gloom over this cap!
my cap expert says it's not that easy - and while I respect you, I trust him more than you...lol
Cowboys are $18.3 M over the cap. Not over $20 M. Can get under rather easily by extending Romo, re-structuring Austin and Carr. Cutting Spears and Free. Spencer wouldn't be dropping back in a 4-3. He would be coming forward all the time as a down-lineman DE. Do your homework. Now go ahead and tell the world how you know everything and your readers know nothing.
my cap expert says they most definitely are 20+ million over the cap. And since it's his JOB to know these things I trust him.
why is nobody talking about Hatcher at LE?
because I don't know if you want him playing on the strong side. Maybe he can do it, maybe not
Will the Cowboys search for a third receiver in the offseason? Or are Jerry Jones and Jason Garrett convinced that Duane Harris can be that guy?
harris, beasley, time benford on the practice squad are all candidates
Call me crazy but Doug Free was awful, the free agent guards were bad, Tyron Smith regressed, etc. Why would you reward Callahan with a promotion?
smoothest transition. lesser of 2 evils
Would it make sense to trade out of the first this year and gain some next year picks and/or lower round picks since we have a little budget?
Seems to me that Garrett's in a no-win situation next season. With the coaching changes and scheme changes on defense, and with the likelihood of a new offensive playcaller as well, we can't expect this team to adapt quickly enough in one offseason to be competitive in 2013. The team will most likely go 8-8 once again and Garrett will be fired. You think that's fair to Coach Garrett?
Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!
If you were Mark Cuban, what do you see as the most pressing need on the Mavs right now?
no superstar in a league where u need 2-3 to win
Looking at the Roster it seems well adept to be able to transistion to a 4-3. But with all the cap mess would it be suitable to trade Romo and move forward with Orton if we are going to make new moves? Also why is Coach Callahan in Dallas afte looking at him in his time with Raiders and Nebraska??
no. U don't trade a top QB. Yes, Romo is a top QB.
Miles Austin, just a guy or good WR?
in between right now. He used to be really good.
What do you think about cuban's bank being open?
this is not the time to make a dumb financial move because he's tired of losing
Is there still chance Jerry Jones decides to go in another direction at coach?, and if so would he be interested in Gruden?
i doubt it.
I'm not arguing with y'all over the salary cap. Once again, my dude who's job is to KNOW everything about the cap told me this week the Cowboys are 20+ over. So that's the number. I'm not trying to persuade you of this. I'm giving you facts. You can choose to accept it or reject it. Cool?
Hi JJT, Can the Cowboys' mediocre safeties - Sensabaugh and the rest, cut it in Kiffin's defense?
i wouldn't think so
The talk on sports radio in South Texas is that Matt Schaub will never get it done in the playoffs and the Texans should move. But, similar to Romo, Matt Schaub is an upper-tier QB in the NFL who just hasn't competed well on the big stages. Do you think NFL teams can afford to take the attitude that you get rid of a top 15 QB, no matter replacement options, if he hasn't shown he can win a Super Bowl?
nope. cause QB hell is one of the most depressing things in sports. Ask Arizona, which had NO CHANCE to win this year
If Spencer is designated a DE instead of an OLB, does that change his franchise tag number?
can't do that #cheating
is it a done deal they are switching to pure 4-3 cover 2? Isn't it likely that Kiffin may need to coach a hybrid scheme to best fit the players, at least in year one?
you don't hire an expert and then not let him do his expertise
JJT, the average age of Super Bowl winning QBs is 29.8. Only Brady is older than that of the four QBs left this year. How much longer do you stick with Romo?
Age ain't nothing but a number. Romo is QB next 4-5 years. Deal with it my friend
do we care about NE? no
u might since they have 12 consecutive 10-win seasons, 11 playoff appearances since 1997 and 5 SB appearances since 2001. Your cowboys have won 10 games 4 times since 1997 but never two in a row. They've been to postseason 6 times and havent made a SB appearance
great chat today, but I gotta go do some work. Hit me on twitter @JJT_ESPNDallas or Facebook if u have additional questions or I did't get to answer yours. Be blessed
