The Mavs have a three-game winning streak going, but I've got a feeling that folks would rather talk about Mark Cuban's comments regarding his intention to be stirring up activity in the trade market. There aren't any really strong rumors buzzing around yet, but let's dig into it as best we can. Fire away ...

Eric (Dallas)

With "Bank of Cuban" open, do Mavs have assets to trade for a great player?

Tim MacMahon
  (2:59 PM)

Probably not, but it depends on how desperate teams are to dump salary with the harsher luxury tax penalties looming. The Mavs are armed with a ton of expiring contracts. Shawn Marion and Vince Carter, who both are signed through next season, could also be attractive to a contender looking for a proven veteran piece.

sahar (Israel)

Cuban is talking about trading but which player worth it? cousins seems untouchable and Gay is not a star .Who are the other options?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:01 PM)

The Mavs have a little more than five weeks to figure that out. They're brainstorming on a daily basis at this point, and they'll keep making the Kings say no about Cousins. Other than the names you mentioned, I'd just be guessing about potential targets.

Brandan (Plano)

Kaman James and Marion for Howard? He isn't going to stay a Laker after this season and they need depth.

Tim MacMahon
  (3:01 PM)

I can hear the laughing all the way from L.A. about that proposal.

Jack (Dallas)

Dirk is the only mav that will not be in the trade conversations?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:01 PM)

That is accurate.

jfb (dfw)

Do the Mavs have any interest in Rudy Gay? If so, could you entice Memphis w/ cap room and cont. to make a run at a title this year by offering Marion, Kaman, and a 2nd round pick?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:03 PM)

I don't know if the Mavs have strong interest in Gay, but it's been reported that the Grizzlies are looking for young talent and picks in return. Your offer isn't going to cut it. I could see the Mavs maybe getting involved as a facilitator in a multi-team Gay deal.

Angel (New York)

Do the Mavs have a realistic chance at making the playoffs? If not, shouldn't they be tanking?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:04 PM)

The Mavs are five games out of the eighth spot, so they have a slim chance at making the playoffs. They aren't going to start tanking, at least not any time soon. My hunch is that the Mavs ended up with a pick in the neighborhood of No. 12, which would mean they were a little too good for their own good in a rebuilding year. Also, as far as the Tank Now movement goes, remember that this is supposed to be one of the weakest draft classes in years.

jfb (dfw)

Will this three game winning stretch be the beginning of something bigger and better w/ this group or will they cont. to be inconsistent and hit another long losing streak?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:05 PM)

Rick Carlisle warned about buying "fool's gold" after the Mavs beat a bad Kings squad and two teams playing the butt end of back-to-backs. It's a heck of a lot better than losing, but it's way premature to proclaim that the Mavs have turned any kind of corner.

jfb (dfw)

After seeing Cousins last week, do you really want to invest in a knucklehead like that and want him to become the face of your franchise down the road when Dirk decides to hang it up?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:07 PM)

A talent like Cousins is worth the risk for a franchise in the Mavs' situation. He has the potential to be an All-NBA big man. The Mavs are starved for young talent. Will he ever grow up? Don't know, but if he does, he'll be a monster for at least the next decade.

Brad (Toronto)

When Cuban said that he would be willing to make the right trade, do you think that it means he still wants to keep cap flexibility for someone like Dwight Howard this summer?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:08 PM)

Cuban has made it clear he's willing to sacrifice financial flexibility this summer to make a trade he believes would significantly improve this roster. It seems to be somewhat of an admission that reeling in Dwight Howard is an extreme long shot at best, as Dirk noted recently.

Brad (Toronto)

Any idea of what type of player the Mavs are looking at? PG seems the most obvious, but what about someone like J.J. Redick, Rudy Gay, Anderson Varejao, Barea/Williams?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:09 PM)

They're looking for impact players. This isn't about targeting a specific position. This team needs a talent infusion.

Ricky (Houston)

Hey Timmy. So the "Bank of Cuban" is officially open. Do they have anyone specifically on their radar or they just keeping an ear to the ground?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:10 PM)

They're doing much more than keeping an ear to the ground. They're trying to start a lot of conversations. Don't know any specific names other than DeMarcus Cousins.

Jason (Fort Worth)

With the Clippers playing as well as they are, can you still see a scenario where CP3 still wants to come to Dallas?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:10 PM)

Not unless Donald Sterling does something that's incredibly stupid even by his standards.

Craig G. (Fairfield, CA)

Hey Tim, has OJ Mayo shed the misconception of being a bad apple?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:12 PM)

Not sure about his rep around the league, but I know that the Mavs have been extremely pleased with his attitude and work ethic. As far as I can tell, he's matured a lot and is a good dude busting his tail to try to reach his potential. Rick Carlisle coaches Mayo hard, and Mayo welcomes it because he wants to get better.

Sam (Austin)

Chances the Mavs make it 4 straight and knock off divisional rival Houston, who will be on the tail-end of a back-to-back, Wednesday night?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:13 PM)

Gotta like their chances. As you alluded to, the Rockets have the Clippers tonight. The Mavs beat the Rockets in Houston without Dirk. And the Rockets have been struggling recently.

Peter (Dallas)

Think the Mavs take a loot at Jennings and Pekovic this summer? Not exactly the big time names, but if their teams refuse to match, they get some good young building blocks.

Tim MacMahon
  (3:14 PM)

Nikola Pekovic would be a great get for the Mavs. He's a rugged big man with some offensive skill, as evidenced by his 20-point double-double in Dallas last night. I'm not as high as Jennings because a shoot-first point guard isn't a great fit with Dirk.

Jason (Fort Worth)

Can we trade for Tyson Chandler and JJ Barea?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:15 PM)

I sense some sarcasm.

Chad (OKC)

Do the Mavs have any pieces that might interest the Clippers for their run at a championship in return for Bledsoe?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:18 PM)

I like the way you're thinking. Eric Bledsoe is a young stud PG stuck as a backup behind CP3. He would have a ton of value in the trade market, so I don't know if the Mavs would have a realistic chance at him. And I don't see any contracts that the Clippers would really want to unload unless they'd like to shed Caron Butler ($8 million salary next season). I think Bledsoe would be a bigger key to a Clippers playoff run than anyone the Mavs could give them.

MFFL (Mean Grean)

Tmac like alot of others i am frustrated with cubes and nellie im desparate gimme something, any chance realistic of making a trade for boogie or al jeff, rudy gay (long shot i know) or any other play makin players?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:21 PM)

Al Jefferson is an interesting name. Maybe the Jazz decide they want to get something of value for him before he hits free agency this summer. Maybe the Mavs could get a third team involved to come up with something that makes sense for Utah. Jefferson or Andrew Bynum are likely to be the best players who are really available this summer, assuming Howard and CP3 stay in L.A. Remember, though, the Mavs had major concerns about a Big Al/Dirk defensive combo when they considered trading for Jefferson before the Timberwolves sent him to Utah. Dallas dealt for Tyson Chandler instead, which worked out pretty well.

Tony(dallas) [via mobile]

I heard a rumor about aldridge being traded any truth to the rumor? If so would dallas have the pieces to make a trade happen?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:23 PM)

I haven't heard that rumor and don't understand why the Blazers would be looking to trade their franchise centerpiece off an improving team. If Aldridge does become available -- and, again, I doubt that -- the Mavs would surely want to bring him back home.

JV74 (Denver)

If Memphis wants to break up their core to shed $$, how about Gasol as a trade target instead of Gay??

Tim MacMahon
  (3:24 PM)

It's worth making the phone call to Memphis, but all indications are that Gay is the guy they're looking to deal. He has the biggest contract on the team, which is probably not a coincidence.

Jason (Fort Worth)

What teams will be in luxury tax hell in the off season that might be interested in unloading bad contracts and a blue chip player?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:26 PM)

The majority of the teams in the West playoff picture are looking at pretty stiff luxury tax payments next season.

Charlie (San Antonio)

Do you believe that Dallas get get on a 5 game win streak?

Tim MacMahon
  (3:27 PM)

No. Sorry, but I'm not picking the Mavs to beat an OKC team that swept them in the playoffs last season and has the best record in the NBA.

Tim MacMahon
  (3:28 PM)

Gotta get going now. Appreciate all the questions. Hope I at least touched on your topic if I didn't answer your question directly.
