Chat with Chris Mortensen

Good (busy) morning!

Frank (New Orleans)

Would Mike Smith have been fired if the Falcons had lost?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:06 AM)

No. Zero chance. The guy has had five straight winning seasons since he was named head coach. They never had back to back winning seasons!! Arthur Blank would consider that an insult to even answer the question.

Miggy (Philly)

Yo Mort! Any intel on Gus Bradley leaving Philly without an offer? Is he just keeping his word to meet with Jacksonville, or did something happen yesterday for one of the sides to sour on the union? Seemed imminent if you listened to the local guys yesterday. What's next?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:08 AM)

I think the Eagles are in the process of making a decision and they weren't ready to offer Bradley the job yet. So it's only right that they would let him proceed with Jacksonville interview. The Jaguars aren't ready t name a coach right away anyway.

RC (West Virginia)

Why has nobody questioned Coach Fox's clock management in the last seconds of regulation in the Bronco's loss this past weekend? He had two timeouts and maybe the best quarterback in the NFL requarding comeback victories. Maybe the Broncos would have won if the Falcon's game was played first and Coach Fox could have learned how to win by watching TV.

Chris Mortensen
  (11:10 AM)

It's been widely second guessed and discussed. Fox has explained why he made that decision and reiterated he would do it again.

Scott (Ann Arbor, MI)

Mort, If you could take one QB, one RB and one WR, who would you take?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:11 AM)

I'm looking at a 3-to-5 year window on this one. I guess I'd say Aaron Rodgers, Adrian Peterson and Calvin Johnson.

Scott (Chicago)

Why do the Texans think that Matt Schaub can deliver them to a championship? The guy is fine, but he's not good enough to take them to the next level.

Chris Mortensen
  (11:16 AM)

I think there are questions about Schaub but there is always this question - who replaces him. T.J. Yates? I did think the Texans made a mistake by not getting in on Peyton Manning but Bob McNair (owner) has created a culture of loyalty and they are loyal to Schaub, as of now.

Kevin (Richmond, VA) [via mobile]

Should Steven Jackson stay in St. Louis on an up-and-coming Rams squad or should he try his luck in free agency so that he could potentially join a playoff team?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:17 AM)

Steven has expressed a strong desire to finish with the Rams and Jeff Fisher wants him back. The question is: Will another team out there make an offer that Steven Jackson can't refuse in what will be his final contract in the NFL. Plus, the Rams just may be a playoff team in 2013. Crazy league.

Bill (Toronto)

What do you make of the Packers poor defensive performance against the 49ers. Were they unprepared or did they players just not perform? Should Dom Capers be getting more heat and possibly lose his job for such an abysmal performance?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:19 AM)

Dom Capers has been taking heat for the Packers' performance. But this is a defense that had a lot of injuries, especially a linebacker where a team would need to be deep and strong facing what they faced in the 49ers the other night.

Bill (Toronto)

This year the first overall pick in the draft is completely wide open? Do you think the Chiefs keep the pick or trade it? If they keep it are they locked in at QB (ehich i think might be a mistake) or take a player that would help regardless of position (such as Luke Joeckel or Star Lotulelei)?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:21 AM)

Nobody believes there is a No.1 quarterback prospect but that can always change in the next 3 months. Their GM, John Dorsey, was not a good hire - he was a great hire, in my opinion. Joeckel makes sense at this stage but we have plenty of time. I'm sure if someone wanted to trade, the Chiefs would listen.

Todd (Anchorage)

Mort, how likely is this the last year of the officiating all-star teams in the playoffs?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:24 AM)

Todd, I like the question. I just don't know the answer. I heard some criticism this playoff season, especially during and after the Broncos-Ravens game on the officiating crew and the fact that these guys do not work together during the season.

Mikey (Lackawanna,NY)

Do you see Matt Barkley climbing the draft boards within the next few months? TOP 10 pick?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:28 AM)

I can see Matt climbing in the draft because he has such great intangibles. He also has four years of tape as a starter. That's a good thing and sometimes a bad thing. Matt isn't physically exceptional in any area. He does use his eyes well to manipulate a defense, according to a pretty good QB evaluator. He also played with first-round caliber receivers. Can he be a top 10 pick? Maybe. Most scouts don't have him there right now but it only takes one team, right?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:31 AM)

I have to run. Working on an urgent story. Sorry. God Bless!
