Chat with Jamison Hensley

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:01 PM)

Good afternoon everyone. I'm out at Ravens headquarters right now as the team prepares for the AFC Championship Game. I'm going to try to answer as many questions as possible. Let's get started.

Jason (Los Angeles)

If Todd Haley leave for Arizona, who would replace him? Would they bring back Whisenhunt?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:03 PM)

I would expect running backs coach Kirby Wilson would get the first look. He was considered the OC in waiting, but he was burned badly in a house fire a year ago. That took him out of the running to be the next OC when the spot opened up.

Walt (Cincinnati )

Can Flacco demand Eli Manning/River money of (6yr/$92 mil) or is that figure too high for Flacco?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:05 PM)

It wouldn't surprise me if Flacco demanded more. Not saying he would get it. I expect the Ravens to put the franchise tag on him in February. Not sure if a deal gets done this year at all.

james nc [via mobile]

Hi jameson, how strange was it steelers having #1def with the front 7taking year off? seems dbacks werent as bad as some may have thought.your take

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:06 PM)

I would disagree that the front seven took the year off. Nose tackle Casey Hampton had one of his best years in recent memory. Inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons had a breakout season. And Brett Keisel and Larry Foote were more than solid.

Andre (Tallahassee, FL)

How much bargaining power for a big payday has Flacco gained from Baltimore's playoff run thus far?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:08 PM)

Not much. The Ravens weren't going to overpay for Flacco. I don't think it mattered what he did in the postseason. He was going to get the franchise tag in February. Flacco can ask for more because he's had such a great playoff run, but the Ravens aren't going to give him $100 million.

Andre (Tallahassee, FL)

Is Ray Lewis' heir apparent already on the roster or will the draft have to provide the answer?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:08 PM)

Ravens can get by with Jameel McClain and Dannell Ellerbe for the next couple of years.

Devin (Philadelphia)

Are the Steelers 1st round picks in Hood and Heyward going to be busts? Neither seems on pace to be worth the value taken on them in the draft.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:09 PM)

I still think Heyward has upside. Never really sold on Hood.

Kelly (Finksburg, MD)

If Joe gets a ring this year, is he in the "elite" list of QBs?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:10 PM)

Not on mine. The elite QBs for me are Brady, Manning and Aaron Rodgers.

Greg (Cincinnati) [via mobile]

What's your take on Chip Kelly? Would you have been happy (For the Browns) if he went to the Browns?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:11 PM)

I consider Kelly to be a major gamble. I know the Browns wanted him and I would have been happy for the Browns to get the man that they targeted. That would have said a lot about the Browns to seal the deal with that guy. But Kelly has no NFL experience. He has the makings of being a bust.

ag (Bethesda,MD)

What do you thin Joe Flacco has to do to be considered "elite"?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:12 PM)

I feel Flacco's career is very similar to Eli Manning. They are both inconsistent but both win. Eli isn't considered elite after winning two Super Bowls. So, I'm not sure Flacco can do anything to make people believe that he's elite.

Vince (Camden, New Jersey)

Who do you think would be a good fit for the Browns DC position?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:14 PM)

John Pagano, the Chargers' DC last year, would be a great hire. Not sure if his 3-4 defense suits the talent on the Browns right now. That's my biggest question. No doubt that Pagano is a very good coordinator. But I would've been fine with keeping Dick Jauron.

Basballguy (Arlington, TX)

Isn't it a little premature to call this a "Super Bowl" run or the Ravens are a "team of destiny"?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:15 PM)

There are a lot of things happening (epic win at Denver, Ray Lewis retirement, players coming back from injury) that make you think this is a team of destiny. But the only way that the Ravens are a team of destiny is if they are holding the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the season.

Richard (Wales, UK) [via mobile]

Do you see Andy Dalton as a playoff winning QB in his Cincinnati future?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:16 PM)

Dalton has to play a lot better than his first two playoff games. To answer your question, yes, Dalton has what it takes to win playoff games. Is he capable of taking the Bengals to the Super Bowl? Based on what I've seen so far, I would say no.

Luke-Harrisburg, PA [via mobile]

What do you feel the chances are of Pittsburgh landing Manti Te'o in the upcoming draft? They need to get younger at LB and he would bring intimidation and leadership to a much needed defense. Thoughts?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:17 PM)

Chances got better when he tanked in the bowl game. But, unless he has bad workouts and a bad combine, I don't see him falling that far down in the first round.

Michael [via mobile]

I am glad Eagle fans get to experience Chip Kelly, not Cleveland. All that NFL experience Chip Kelly brings to the table..

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:18 PM)

That's the biggest question surrounding Kelly. Never played or coached in the NFL before. His previous coaching stops were at Columbia, New Hampshire and Johns Hopkins. That's good if you're hiring a doctor, not an NFL coach.

James (London)

Do you see the Ravens elevating Jim Caldwell to Offensive co-ordinator permanantly after their recent form? Will the offense look much different if they do?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:19 PM)

I would be stunned if the Ravens went with a different offensive coordinator next season. Caldwell has earned the right to stick around.

Alex (Baltimore)

How much are they paying Chip Kelly?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:19 PM)

I heard that it is at least $6 million per season. My guess is that it's a lot more.

BK (NYC)

Jamison - shouldn't we be hearing more noise for John Harbaugh as a coach of the year candidate? I know Jim is getting all the credit for the QB switch, but John had the guts to fire an OC in December and take a defense held together by duct tape to a championship game.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:20 PM)

Hard to vote someone Coach of the Year when his team lost four of its last five games. Most awards are voted on at end of regular season.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Jamison, do you think the Browns will let Dick Jauron leave the team?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:21 PM)

Yes. Sounds like Chud's preference is John Pagano from Chargers.

James (DC)

Im curious as to why in your Flacco article that you think that they will put a franchise tag on him? My thought is that if the Ravens but a tag on Joe they will not have enough cap to sign ellerbe or williams. Im sure kruger and reed are gone but if they put a tag on Joe they cant afford any of the other free agents.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:22 PM)

It does take a huge chunk of cap space. Ravens can always restructure some guys. It's going to be hard to keep Kruger after the season he's had, but I can see them making Ellerbe a priority.

Auto44Short (FL)

JH thanks for putting up with us. I know we can be a tough crowd. My question is could you give us your thoughts on what you think the Bengals needs are for this upcoming draft?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:24 PM)

I really enjoy the chats. I have to give you guys a lot of credit for good questions. As far as your question goes, the Bengals need ... Linebacker, whether it's inside or outside. Rey, Howard and Lawson are all UFAs. Safety, after fill the hole next to Reggie Nelson. Speedy running back. BJGE provided more big plays than expected but Cincy needs explosion in the backfield.

James (London)

Any chance Bryant McKinnie is re-signed next year? This o-line line-up looks pretty solid, and there's not a lot of cap room to sign a left tackle...

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:25 PM)

McKinnie has looked really good this postseason and he should've been playing earlier. But his age and work ethic works against him re-signing with the Ravens.

Devin (Pittsburgh)

Which will have a bigger impact in his contract negotiations...Flacco's poor regular season or (so far) his great post-season?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:26 PM)

Neither. He's getting the tag. This is kind of the same pattern for past couple of seasons. Flacco has been extremely inconsistent in the regular season and great in the playoffs.

Michael [via mobile]

Do you envision the Browns making some fairly significant moves in Free Agency unlike previous seasons?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:27 PM)

I do. The Browns have the cap room, and Haslam will want to make a splash.

Jon (Cleveland)

While I am not upset about the Chip signing with the Eagles instead of the Browns, does this reflect poorly on the Browns' new leadership? Are our worries about Banner justified?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:27 PM)

I give my opinion on this topic in a blog post. It should've went up around 2:15.

Nick (Chicago)

Who needs Chip Kelly when you can have Rob Chudzinksi...right? RIGHT?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:28 PM)

At least the Browns know Chud wants to be in Cleveland.

Gabe F. (Los Angeles)

Do you think Boldin will be a Raven next year? If so will he have to take a pay cut?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:29 PM)

A month ago, I would have said no. He's making $6M next season. But the way he's finished the year, the Ravens have to think he's worth the money. He's had three 100-yard receiving games for them in the playoffs.

Basballguy (Arlington, TX)

If you'd admit the Ravens are your favorite team, we wouldn't give you such a hard time.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:31 PM)

My team was the Colts before they left in the middle of the night to Indy. Not that I'm bitter.

Frank (Pittsburgh)

Steelers wouldn't take a look at Norv Turner if Haley ended up leaving?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:32 PM)

Norv seems to be a done deal with Cleveland. He has ties with Chud, not Tomlin.

Threat Level Bob (Chotchkie's)

Any ideas as to why it is taking so long for the Browns to officially sign Norv Turner?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:33 PM)

He's in Hawaii, although I haven't confirmed that through any travel agent. The Browns want to make the announcement when they can have an introductory news conference. I heard that the Browns liked Chud because he can bring Norv along.

Basballguy (Arlington, TX)

Any chance of you blasting the Browns now that Chip Kelly went to the Eagles?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:34 PM)

What does it say about the Browns that the Eagles were able to get him? Not saying he's the answer. But the Eagles got their guy.

Jon (Essex, MD )

Will John and Jim discuss the 49ers Patriots game to give some insight from this weekend, similar to the common opponent in the Steelers last year?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:34 PM)

You better believe it. They talked about Andrew Luck before that game as well. Wouldn't you do the same?

Barnez (Pittsburgh) [via mobile]

Chip Kelly is a jerk, nuff said!!!

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:36 PM)

Noted. And I don't sense any bitterness from you as well.

Joe (Dover, Ohio)

Are you sold on Joe Banner having so much power with the browns? The more I hear from him the more I wish he would disappear and not have so much control over football decisions.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:37 PM)

As a Browns fan, you have to be excited about Haslam as the owner but wary about Banner making the football decisions.

Next year SB champs (Paul Brown Stadium)

Who do you expect to have the biggest splash in FA in the AFCN?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:37 PM)

Browns.

Spraven [via mobile]

What is the status of Bernard Peirce?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:37 PM)

Pierce told reporters today that he is going to play.

M (DC)

Do you think Ravens will be able to sustain the same level of intensity against the Patriots after that emotional win at Denver?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:38 PM)

People asked the same question after the emotional win over the Colts. It was Ray Lewis' final home game, if you remember.

Brandon (Dayton)

Do you think that the browns will keep weeded as their starting qb next year?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:39 PM)

Weeden seems like Derek Anderson 2.0, just with more touch on the ball. So, he would seem to fit Chud's old offense in Cleveland.

chris (baltimore)

Out of the 3 main defensive free agents Kruger, Williams, and Ellerbe, which one do you think the Ravens will try to bring back.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:40 PM)

Ellerbe. He'll be the cheaper of the three and fills a big need at inside linebacker.

jerry (orlando,fla.)

do you think james harrison and plax will be back next year and do you think they will sign mike wallace?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:41 PM)

Don't see Wallace getting re-signed. James Harrison will need to take a pay cut. And Plax? He'll be back only if the Steelers can't find anyone better. He's not a priority at all.

Michael (Athens, OH)

What do you think of derick anderson coming to the Browns? Should coach chud even answer that call?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:41 PM)

I would change my number.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:42 PM)

Thanks for all of the great questions. Sorry I couldn't get to them all. Will talk to you next week. Enjoy the conference championship games this weekend.
