OK. We all know why we are here today. You want some expert opinion and analysis. So I'll knock all of the questions out with one swooping answer: Yes, I think the move to the pistol offense will be a good thing for Colorado under new coach Mike MacIntyre. You're welcome, RMOysters. So, what else is happening?
Chip Kelly to my beloved Philadelphia Eagles?? Say it ain't so, Kevin! There's got to be some mistake... didn't Chip say he was going to stay at Oregon?
He never said he was going to stay -- there was never a formal announcement, press conference, press release, tweet or Facebook post. We all just assumed that by passing on the first round of interviews, the issue was dead.
Hey ducks....Hahahahaha. That is all.
35-17. That is all.
I know everyone stands behind helf, but in reality...are we going to be okay? Can we still make a run at the title?
Yes -- you can still make a run at the title. The players aren't changing. The scheme isn't changing on either side of the ball. Hit the gym and get those pecks ready for next year.
You picked a fortuitous time to host a chat, Kev.
It's always fortuitous in the Pac-12.
How badly will Kelly's departure affect the Ducks recruiting ? Both, committed, and considering ? This is an awesome day for this Husky fan !!
That remains to be seen. My guess is that one or two might re-open their recruiting, but I don't think it will be that damaging. A lot of the guys want to play for the school and the brand.
Any early word on potential Recruiting changes of heart for Oregon now with Chip Kelly leaving?
Haven't heard anything in the last 90 minutes. I'm guessing most of the commits are in class right now and don't even know about it yet.
I asked this questions last week but now it seems a little more relavent... Who do you see replacing Helfrich as OC now that Chip has, ehem, left for the NFL? #WTD
Not sure yet. Depends if they want to stay in house. Gary Campbell might get a shot? Steve Greatwood has some previous experience as the run game coordinator. Let's get the HC in place first and then we can worry about coordinators.
How soon will Oregon likely announce their new coach? Signing day is 3 weeks out and Oregon's class is still low on numbers at this point. Need to move fast to maintain stability.
Agreed. The state has a policy that Oregon has to interview at least one minority candidate. But we essentially (think) we know what's going to happen. The sooner the better.
Does this announcement change your mind about having Oregon just ahead of Stanford going into 2013?
Don't think so. While Stanford's defense is going to be ridiculously talented -- I still need to see where their points are going to come from.
Will the Pac12 be setting up a grief counseling hotline for us Oregon fans?
Yes. That would be Ted's mailbag.
Ultimately, does this mean BIG sanctions are coming our way?
No. Don't read anything about this into that. There is no way in the last nine days Kelly could have learned what sanctions are coming -- especially since the committee on infractions hasn't even met yet. This has nothing to do with that. And I'm still of the belief the sanctions aren't going to be brutal.
should we air our dissapointment and anger to you or Ted
Ted. He's stronger than I am -- I'm bound to get verklempt.
Tell Ted he might wanna revise his Pac-12 bold predictions for 2013 after the Chip Kelly news.
Hey, this is the news business. In this day and age, it's no longer about what you wrote yesterday...
Enough with the Ducks, what's new with the other 11 teams?
You got it. There are a few of those questions floating... let me look...
Hearing Clancy Pendergast is the possible new defensive coordinator at USC. I'm not excited at all. Should I be?
You shouldn't be disappointed. I think he's a very good coordinator. He has some history as a 3-4 guy, though and USC obviously likes the 4-3. Will be interesting to see if there is a scheme change.
With Kelly gone, can I win the Pac 12 North?
Next year? No. Three years from now? Maybe...
How much improvement can we expect from Cougars with Yost hiring among other things?
I like the move because it just brings a different set of eyes and a fresh take on the offense. Obviously, there are a lot of the same philosophies and beliefs -- but kudos to Mike Leach for making the move and bringing in a fresh perspective.
2 recruits already twitted they are opening their recruitment and it is rumored that many more are to follow. How will Oregon's recruiting be affected?
Because everything 18-year-olds tweet is as good as gold.
I want to extend my condolences to by buddy The Duck. He must be heart broken. I have started a bread basket for him. Want to contribute Kevin?
For all the P12 schools lining up to take their shots at Oregon -- be prepared to reap the whirlwind if they beat you next year. Just sayin'...
How is Mike MacIntyre regarded as a recruiter?
Very strong. He doesn't see himself as a buddy or a player's coach. He's all business and his resume is impressive so far.
Kelly's NFL hire proves it -- the mobile quarterback criss-cross haywire Keystone Cops option offense is the wave of the future. Is the pocket passer officially dead?
No! Name me a mobile quarterback that has won a Super Bowl. Steve Young? He didn't win it until he became a better pocket passer. Until it happens, I'm not sold that the pocket passer is dead.
How many losses will it take for USC to start looking for new head coaches next season?
I think if there is another seven or eight win season -- coupled with more off-the-field embarrassments (deflated balls, number switching, lying about the coaches poll, jogging away from press conferences when asked about injuries) then he could be gone. If he gets 8-9 and there are zero off-field distractions or issues, he could buy more time.
wanted to say how much I enjoyed your article on San Diego State and recruiting today. An excellent piece Mr Gemmell
Thanks Jeff. Fun reconnecting with the team I used to cover and catching up with those guys.
Kevin, I've heard that the 3-4 for USC might not be great and disgruntle some of the current DL and obviously change some thoughts on recruits to USC. What are your thoughts on that?
That is absolutely a concern. It's not just the scheme that changes when you go from 4-3 to 3-4, it's an entirely different philosophy on how to attack the offense. On the flip side, it might sway some guys who want to play in a 3-4.
Talk me down...
You have an outstanding quarterback, the most explosive player in football with DAT and a nice recruiting class coming in. Plus, a bunch of those young defensive linemen got great experience last year. Oh yeah, you'll still be a preseason top 5. Relax.
Mom said I couldn't have my lunchables until my room was clean. That's not fair. Should I pout, or stomp my feet?
A little of both works best. Don't pigeon-hole yourself to one tactic.
So when can other Pac-12 schools start poching Oregon recruits??
If coaches haven't been working the phones already this morning talking to high school coaches, I'd be shocked.
Also, now that the Ducks are losing Chip Kelly do you still see them going to the NC game? If not, do they still win the north?
I very much think Oregon could still go to the national championship game next year. And given the offensive issues at Stanford, I'd still put them as the favorite to win the North next year.
Can we make today an official holiday in honor of Chip Kelly's departure?
Only if you celebrate it nine times every month.
Hello Kevin,Do you agree with Coach Shaws statement after the Rose Bowl victory that Stanford still doesnt get the respect it deserves? It seems they were a bit low in the final rankings considering they won 8 in a row including victories over 4 straight ranked teams! I feel the Cardinal have a legitimate shot at playing for the BCS Championship game. If they hadn't gagged the game against the Huskies they most likely would have played Notre Dame in a rematch! That would have been a great story.
I think Shaw uses the lack-of-respect tactic to keep his players hungry. There is nothing better than an us-vs.-the-wold mentality and it obviously works. I don't underestimate Stanford -- but I do think they have some offensive holes that need to be worked out.
Who is happier today: David Shaw or Michael Vick?
I'm hoping to talk to Shaw in the next couple of days -- and I think I already know what he'll say. It's a great thing for Chip, but a bad thing for the Pac-12. It's a better for the conference when Chip is here. Meeting Vick for coffee tomorrow morning so I'll let you know what he says.
There was a lot of hype for WSU's first game this season vs. BYU, and we know how that turned out. With a down Auburn as the Cougs' opener in 2013, do you think expectations will be tempered, or will hype be high due to the Apple Cup win and a lesser(ish) opponent?
I think they'll probably be a bit more tempered. 2012 was a reality check that things are going to take a little more time than we all initially thought. Can you believe there were folks out there actually predicting a big win for WSU against BYU (gulp).
One more before I have to get back to work. I know this is the Pac-12 Blog and everything and it's old news; but do you think that the Big East Conference will still be around in 3-5 years?
I don't know if college football will look the same as it does right now in 3-5 years.
Do you think Pep Hamilton will leave Stanford?
Not sure. He seems to be making himself available to the market, which is interesting. But I still have trouble believing he would leave for a lateral job as an OC somewhere else. If he gets a head coaching opportunity, he'd take it.
So other that CK leaving what else is new?
Well, Trojan1981 keeps spamming me the same question over and over. That's kind of annoying. But since he's a regular and a heck of a good guy, I'll let it slide.
Will you be able to check out UW's revamped stadium and facilities next year?
Hope so. Did a drive by when I was up there a couple of times this season and it looked good. I would imagine I'd get up there a couple of times again next season.
With the 132nd pick of the draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select.... Matt Scott, QB, Arizona! What do you think?
Wow! That might be the call of the century. Would love to see Scott run that offense. If that comes to fruition, I'm buying you a hot dog next time I'm in Phoenix.
Any interest in doing a meet-n-greet with the Pac-12 Blog Peanut Gallery during some of your roadtrip games next season?
Sure. I'll bring the Scrabble.
Any chance this is another false alarm like last year? I don't buy anything until I hear something official.
That's fair. And there's nothing wrong with holding out hope. But it seems pretty legit this time.
Any Stanford recruiting updates? (Don't necessarily have to be related to the departure of the Chipster.)
Four-star DE Austin Hooper recently jumped on board. Looks like a legit player. They also picked up a three-star OT (name escapes me at the moment). They keep loading up on those big boys.
I read the bold predictions post yesterday, and surprisingly enough I agree with most of them. Here is my question though, you say USC will bounce back and win at least 10 games. Where does that put ASU to win the Pac-12 south, and do you see us at the Rose Bowl, assuming everyone stays healthy, Will Sutton stays as dominant as ever, Taylor Kelly continues to improve, and our stable of WR's gets a much needed upgrade.
For the record -- those were Ted's bold predictions. He and I didn't consult on those. But I too agree with most of them. I think the South is going to be a nasty four-way UFC fight next season. But with Sutton back, and improving Kelly and those two JC WRs they added (Strong and Morris) they get a pair of big bodies for him to throw to. BOth are 6-3. If they can negotiate the front-end of that schedule, I'd say they have as good a chance as any to win the South.
After all this excitement, did you eat lunch today? If you did, what kind of lunch?
I'm on West Coast time so no lunch yet -- thinking some leftover Chicken Noodle Soup (the wife and boy are sick so I worked up some soup for them last night).
Kevin do you realize that you just owned me in front of the PAC-12 blog regulars, time to go cry myself to sleep! I wonder is there is room on that ledge next to that Duck Fan?
But I also said you're a heck of a guy and I forgave you. Apologies if feelings were hurt. Now suck it up and get back to the grind.
Have you seen my drink?
Searching for my lost shaker of salt, salt, salt, salt...
So tempers flared after the bowl game, what going on at USC?
That's a team in some serious need of self-examination. Here's hoping they get it. I'm doing the USC report for tomorrow and it's not a favorable write-up.
What do you think of athlons prediction as ASU a team to watch in 2013? More sleeping giant stuff with no performance (no whammy, no whammy)?
I tabbed ASU for seven wins this season and think you can expect about seven or eight next year. Nine would be phenomenal. That defensive front is going to be really, really good.
Any word on ND and Vanderdoes or Muhammed? Or anyone else? Please we need to beef up our D LINE to stop the run
Last I saw Vanderdoes really liked Alabama... not sure how that's going to play out.
If Matt Scott goes to Philadelphia like BearDown says up there, that will be the second year in a row UA's starter got drafted by Philly
And Foles will redshirt. IRONY!
Are you going to make it out to Pullman next season? First round is on me.
I hope so. I love the charm of Pullman. Great college town. If you're buyin, I won't say no.
Have you seen Junior Salt in action??? will be be STAR 2.0?
So I keep hearing. Excited to see him. Whitt couldn't stop gushing about him last year.
On a lighter note, Thats 3 PAC 12 head coaches to the NFL, Carrol, Harbaugh and Kelly. Who will win thier first Super Bowl?
Hmmm. Fascinating question. Have to figure Harbaugh has the edge (seeing as his team is in the NFC title game). But that speaks volumes about the coaching talent in the conference.
Kevin, I send congrats to Chip on his career advancement but I am disappointed at the way it went down and the potential impacts to recruiting. Any glimer of hope that Oregon can move up in the recruiting class rankings or are they just doing damage control until signing day?
It's not damage control. Someone referenced a recruiting story I did today (It's on the recruiting nation site about SDSU). Teams like Oregon have their pick of the litter. If someone leaves, they'll find someone else to replace them. Oregon is going to be fine. Breath, people.
Do you like movies about gladiators?
A Buh... not a buh, a bomb.
I just got sacked, again.
Guessing this is Chongo?
Who will be the next coach I lose to the NFL?
Interesting question -- Mora or Shaw seem to be the most obvious choices right now. But both seem awfully content. Going to be a couple of years at least until we see another one go to the NFL. Just my guess.
is ASJ the best tight end in the conference now?
Conference, yes. Country, yes.
By the way, tell Miller he owes me 75 up-downs in the sand pit.
Only if he can take a martini break after every 10.
Do you see Oregon's offense being less cutthroat under a new coach, even one familiar with the offense?
Nope. I think Oregon's approach, philosophy, style of play is going to be identical -- assuming Helfrich is the coach.
Any educated guesses for the ranking of PAC-12 players at the NFL draft?
Off the top of my head -- Star will be a top 10 pick, maybe top five. Ertz will go high. Barkley will be late first, early second ...
If the Pac 12 Blog was a cocktail, what would be in it?
Knowledge. Tasty, tasty knowledge. (And an obscure mix of vodka and scotch).
Lance Armstrong: Good dude cause he started livestrong, or Bad dude that ruined people's lives to promote his interests and the Livestrong foundation?
I'm really ticked about this. I bought into Lance -- even though people in the know told me he was doping six years ago. I wanted to believe him when he stood up there and said "I feel sorry for people who don't believe in miracles." I bought it. He was my last hope. Now I'm bitter and jaded. Really, really disappointed about this (and yes, great what he did for Livestrong and like most people, I've been affected by cancer). But it's still really disappointing.
dont forget about Dion Jordan
Yes, first rounder.
Only 228 more days till the season starts back up!!!!!!!!!!!
But who's counting...
Ted will answer my Niners vs Falcons question.
Ted probably follows the NFL close than I do. Sorry, not my field of expertise.
How are the Philly fans going to treat me?
Dude, they booed Santa Clause...
When do you think you will get to talk to CK next? Without talking to him, what do you think may have been the deciding factor? Total control?
I don't think I'm going to talk to Chip Kelly again for a very, very long time. When most college coaches move on to the NFL, they usually disregard the college media. I tried to get Harbaugh a couple of times this year and was shot down. It happens. I think control had a lot to do with it.
What's worse, what Lance did and got caught for, or Barry Bonds not getting punished for doing the same thing?
It's all bad. It's all dirty. It's all disappointing. I don't care about the particulars. It sucks for sports and it ticks me off that one day I'm going to have to explain to my son about how these alleged heroes cheated. It's very jading.
Any plans to attend Oyster's wedding?
I'm singing. I do a wicked "Every Rose Has It's Thorn."
Arizona has a ___% chance of successfully replacing matt Scott next season
30. I don't think people appreciate how good Scott was this year. And Carey and Hill both benefited from that.
Can season 3 of GOT equal the first two seasons?
Can't wait! I hope it does. The Blackwater episode was epic.
So, do you think ASU will go 3-0 for the out of conference games? Who do they beat and loose to?
I think they can beat Wisconsin. Notre Dame... going to be a tight one. Not worried about Sac State.
Thankyou for getting me hooked on Dexter it is a great show but I have been disappointed with Season 3 so far does it get better
No worries. Stick with it. I thought Season 3 was the weakest also. It gets better -- and that it gets freaking amazing. Stay with it and enjoy.
What happened? I should've led the conference in rushing this year.
Losing those tackles was a lot bigger of an impact than we all thought.
Other Pac-12 fans seem to forget that even though Chip left that Mariota, Black Mamba and most of our O-Line return. Duck fans can't wait to take it to these teams
That's what I'm sayin... Oregon is still going to be very, very, very good.
Hey Ted, Whats the chances Scott Frost gets the offensive coordinator job? or will Oregon go after a guy with more experience?
I'll ask him. Or you can ask him in his chat tomorrow.
So how relevant does Oregon stay with other Pac programs picking up and Kelly leaving?
How did we do in the 'Natty'? Lots of flags makes good entertainment!
Well, Mr. official. Your first mistake is using the word "Natty." That in itself is a flag.
Do you think CK will be disappointed in the lack of uniform combos for Philly?
First off, Dorothy. You are a saint. And I think he'll be OK with the lack of uniform options. Clever, though.
Will the PAC-12 finally join the rest of the leagues in an eight game conference schedule?
I hope not. Ted is for the eight-game schedule. I'm still on the fence, but tend to lean more toward the nine-game schedule. I like that winning your conference really means something. Stanford earned its conference title this year.
No Kiffin bashing today?
Been sort of a busy day. As I said before, the USC postseason report comes out tomorrow. Plenty of chances for you to bash there.
Here is a bold prediction for you Kevin! Arizona lead by Kadeem Carey and JC Transfer QB Jesse Scroggins produce better offense numbers then last year and win the south. Thoughts?
I think Arizona has a chance to win the South. But I don't think they'll put up better numbers. As I said before, folks are really going to appreciate how good Matt Scott was once he's gone.
How hard do you laugh during your chats? I am consistently laughing
This is one of my favorite parts of the job. I usually laugh more at the questions I can't post.
Thanks for a great chat. You're the bestest.
Thanks buddy. Back atcha. That's it for me folks. You've got Ted tomorrow. Enjoy the rest of your day.
