Welcome. Let's get started.
Please that kiffin has found a defensive coordinator to run the defense
The rumor mill is certainly hot that Clancy Pendergast is about to be named defensive coordinator. He fits the ball of having experience against the spread from his time at Cal.
Hey Garry. I had heard about the fight in the locker room about 3 weeks ago. Do you find it interesting about the timing of this story coming out a few days before USC biggest recruiting weekends?
i doubt that played much into it, I'm guessing the writer put it out as soon as he felt comfortable with the info.
Hi Garry, great job during a tough time. I'm just wondering if the delay in the DC announcement could be related to the Chip Kelly news. Is Aliotti back in play? It might be a great hire if it weakens their recruiting class. Aliotti should also bring great insight into the Oregon offense and how best to defend it. Thank you
They don't appear to be connected at this point since it appears as if Clancy Pendergast is about to be named DC. Lots of rumors right now that the hire is pending.
Any word on any coaching changes beside D.C. in the wind...
Yes, there are a lot of rumors that James Cregg will get moved from o-line coach to TE coach. No word on who would replace him at OL. Also speculation that there could be a change at LB coach, depending on the DC hire.
Garry. Two questions 1. Who will be the next D.C? 2. Who has been enrolled for EE? Thanks Garyy.
It appears as if Clancy Pendergast will be the new DC, based on the rumors that have really picked up steam lately. As far as I know Bigelow is the only EE who hasn't enrolled yet.
Any chance that Christian Thoomas will be healthy to play in 2013? Any wprd on Tre Madden?
Nothing firm on either player. Devon Kennard sent out a Tweet today that he has been cleared, which is good news for the Trojans. Christian Thomas would be a nice addition to an already loaded TE group but Madden is the one who could be a real wild card, his physical running style would seem to fit perfectly with the new plans for a tougher style of run game.
Hi Garry. What really happened in the locker room situation and how likely Lane can steal Oregon DC to USC since Chip left for Eagles?
From what I was told it was definitely a heated situation, very emotional, in the locker room but it never came to any blows or anything like that. It was a frustrating end to a frustrating season and it boiled over at that point. It sounds like Pendergast is the guy at DC based upon all the recent scuttlebutt.
Withthe supposed DC filled by Clancy, Where do you see the next 3 weeks of recruiting going, and what type of philosipy change for next years defense be? Will we be aggressive or set back and try and be opportunistic?
I think there will be a big emphasis on firming up some of the defensive recruits such as Ramsey, Prevot and Hatcher while also trying to get Vanderdoes back in the fold. There will also be two elite linebackers on campus this weekend in Matthew Thomas and Quinton Powell so it would be a huge bonus to lock up one of them.
So I wake up this morning, and see that ESPN (aka USC's version of a police blotter) reports of a fight that broke out in the locker room. Now fights are nothing new, but because its USC and because its LK its a top story on ESPN media. My question is, if Pat Haden saw this in person, as reported, what does he have to say for himself regarding sticking with Lane?
Let's be clear, I have never heard that it escalated into a fight. There was definitely a situation that involved a lot of emotionally charged players with a lot of yelling but never a fight. These things can happen in a locker room. There hasn't been any comment from Haden on the situation.
Which of the current roster offensive linemen are best suited as tackles?. Seems to me that most the guys are true guards rather than tackles.
One guy to watch for in the future is Chad Wheeler, he's got a real nice frame that should grow well into a tackle prospect.
Hi Garry. thanks for the good work. do you know anything about Kylie Fitts? can coach O change his mind and make him commit to the trojans again?
There was progress made on Sunday during Orgeron's in-home visit. The Fitts family said their peace and it was a good start toward rebuilding the relationship to a good point. I wouldn't rule out Kylie ending up at SC when all is said and done.
I for one think that the freshman might have had a point. Maybe not about Barkley because his examples of leadership are well documented. But as it pertains to Lane a case could be made that leadership was not present from the coaching staff. Thoughts?
I think there is merit to that. I was told there were words directed to the staff as well, not just the seniors.
From a purely human perspective, how do you think Lane felt watching his players fight in the locker room after a less than inspiring SunBowl? Especially with Haden in the room? How do you think he feels having a senior scream "you lied to us" at the conclusion of a the Sun Bowl? I feel sorry for him, but I feel even worse for my university.
I don't think you can call it a good situation, that's for sure. Kiffin said in an interview recently that "the head coach did not do a very good job this year". I think that's an accurate statement. This was not a shining year in the coaching career of Lane Kiffin, now it's up to him to move forward since he has the support of his boss for another year. The best way to change that perspective if you are Lane Kiffin is to go out and win.
How in the hell did Pete Carrol make it look so easy? And whats the deal with Ty Issac? Any plans to go after Oregon recruits and which ones?
Good question when looking back. There was a time when Carroll made it look so easy while his teams were dominating on the field. That was a gift for a football coach. There is interest in the Robinson twins from San Diego but as of now it appears as if they will stick with the Ducks.
There is news out that 10-15 players were involved in an altercation after the Sun Bowl, with younger players calling out seniors for quitting during the game. If true, why didna??t the coaches get ahead of the problem? That must have been some plane ride home wuth the players; parents on board.
There was an incident in the locker room, yes. As far as the coaches getting out ahead of it, there are some who thought an emotional situation like that would have been good for the team to happen earlier in the year. Sometimes those kind of things can work to the benefit of a team in the long run.
Would Ed Orgeron ever be considered for the head coaching job if Kiffin is let go? I know he had a brief stint in the SEC as a head coach.
Yes, I think Orgeron would receive consideration but I don't know if he showed enough at Ole Miss to get the job. Orgeron definitely would like a shot to be a head coach again.
Luck, RG3, and Russel Wilson are now being heralded as the best QB class since Elway's. I don't care how honorable or how christian MB7 is, a Gigantic part of him has to be regret coming back to this debacle of a season. Your thoughts on MB7 with regards to what I wrote and his pro prospects?
I saw Gil Brandt had Barkley as the #7 pick in his mock draft earlier this week while Mel Kiper didn't have him going in the first round. I think Barkley does up being a first round pick this year and I think he's going to be a real solid pro. This year at USC was a situation that simply went sideways and NFL teams are going to be able to recognize that as something beyond Barkley. As far as Barkley regretting anything, I doubt regret is the right word because that's just not him. I'm sure the year didn't go the way he planned though.
new DC a good choice? what impact will it have on recruits?
I think it will be good. Michael Hutchings already sent out a message saying he liked the choice.
Jesse Scroggins is at U of A. My question is why? Because i find it hard to believe that he couldn't beat out Wittik in a FAIR QB competition. It boggles my mind that we brought in Wittik and Kessler in the same year. If scholarships are at a premium than we wasted it on a QB we didn't need (Wittik in my opinion, after what I saw). Jesse should have been out there because Max was beyond awful.
I like Jesse's game a lot but he had his chances at SC. He struggled with academics and injuries, and even when he was out there he never was able to establish himself ahead of the other two. With that being said, he has got a real strong arm and I don't doubt he can be successful at the college level. Even his JC coach said he has to figure out how committed he wants to be to the game, that will be the biggest issue for Jesse.
Need some hope going into this very very very long off-season. Do you have anything...I mean ANYTHING to give the faithful to look forward to?
The thought of returning to a more physical style of play, one that revolves around power football, should be a welcome change for Trojan fans. Those words are being used by the coaches these days and now it's a matter of seeing that translate to the field.
Could you comment on the schedule, looks pretty easy where we should expect 8-10 wins, plus pendergrast as dc. I think a minimum expectation for Coach Kiffen is to win the Pac 12 South. I also noticed ND managed to get to the BCS Championsip game with a similar sort of schedule, mostly easy with a few tough teams sprinkled in.
It sets up especially well early, with a relatively easy warm up on the road against Hawaii and then a series of home games. I agree that it sets up favorably for the Trojans.
Realistically and honestly, how much longer does Lane have as head coach?
I think this year is huge for him. Haden committed to him coming back in 2013 but nothing was said beyond that. If there is a repeat of 2012 next year, that could be bad for Lane.
just heard chip kelly is leaving for Philly. any thoughts on that? any recruits we could get because of the changes?
That's a huge development in the Pac-12. Let's see where Oregon goes from here because Chip took them to levels that the program simply hadn't seen before. Of course, the same could be said for Stanford when Harbaugh left and Shaw has done a great job there. There is some USC interest in the Robinson twins from San Diego but so far it appears they will stick with Oregon.
Hey Garry, A few weeks ago I asked you what you thought of Vanderdoes. If he was on the fence or not. You said that as long as Coach O was here he would stay committed. Do the Trojans have a chance with him after all ?What is your gut feeling on this kid ?
I still think SC is in a very good position with Vanderdoes, especially with some of the positive momentum that could be on campus this weekend with a new defensive coordinator. He will finish off his visits with trips to ND and Alabama though so this one is far from over.
What's the update on K. Bigelow? Has be been cleared by the NCAA and fully enrolled in class?
He is not enrolled yet. He put out a Twitter message about getting some real good news but no confirmation that it is in relation to getting cleared.
Who will be the big surprise signing on signing day for the Trojans?
I don't necessarily expect one because I think the class will be full by then but if it isn't, don't be surprised if SC makes a run at DB Jermaine Kelly from Salesian, who is currently committed to Washington.
Early prediction for 2013: Wittek, Kessler, or Browne? Did the Sun Bowl performance hurt Wittek's chances for the fall?
I still think Wittek but, yes, I think the Sun Bowl performance kept the door open a little for the other two. Wittek had a chance to really separate himself with a good showing in the bowl game but that didn't happen.
The alleged scuffle in El Paso; just boys being boys or another symptom of lack of discipline?
A combination of both. These things happen on a football team, anybody who has played the sport knows that. But there were also some genuine issues that led to it, which can't be brushed away.
Joe Barry was reportedly seen on campus within the last week. Can you confirm this information? Is Hazelton following Monte to Dallas? Was Barry interviewing for the hopefully-soon-to-be vacant LB coaching position? Thanks & Fight On, GP!
I don't think Hazelton follows Monte to Dallas, the rumors are that he will head to Nevada. Barry would be a fantastic choice if SC can make that happen but I can't confirm anything at this time.
Hello Garry,What are our chances with Mathew Thomas ? Since I'm a numbers guy, can you put a % as to USC's chances of landing him ?
It obviously depends on this visit. There was a lot of talk earlier this week that he might not make the trip so that tells me SC needs a real good visit to make a good impression and have a legit shot.
Garry - with so much emphasis being placed on meeting the new DC this weekend by recruits, isn't it a bit scary to not have one hired a mere 72 hours before their arrival? How can CLK have the new DC primed and ready to sell SC if he isn't even there a full week yet? WE ARE GETTING RESTLESS!!!
There are a lot of rumblings today that Clancy Pendergast is about to be hired, Michael Hutchings even sent out a message saying he was fired up about the hire.
3 spots left. Who is coming. Pick 'em GP...Eddie VA. RobinsonRobinson TwinsMatthew ThomasQuinton PowellTahaan GoodmanK. FittsEdO Surprise?
Vanderdoes, Fitts, Powell
How does USC successfully bounce back? What do you make of the favorable schedule? We all know how the "easy" schedule of 2012 panned out...
I think the best thing would be a change in philosophy that revolves around a return to physical USC football. start with going back to black shoes, which I've heard will likely happen. then focus on dominating the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. If those kind of things can happen, it would go a long way toward bouncing back.
Garry,if reports are true, what do you think Kiffin seen in Clancy Pendergast to chose him over the other candidates for DC?
Experience against the spread in a 3-4. There are a lot of football people I respect who think the 3-4 is the way to go against the spread and Pendergast is known for running that system. He's also shown an amount of success at Cal in his time there.
Garry, here's my prefered 2-deep OL depth chart. What is yours? LT - Max Tuerk, Aundrey Walker LG - Aundrey Walker, Marcus Martin - C John Martinez, Cyrus Hobbi - RG Jordan Simmons, Khaliel Rodgers - RT Kevin Graf, Zach Bannner
I think that's a real solid one. That LG competition would be nice to watch, I expect Marcus Martin to bounce back with a good year next year. The only thing I don't like about moving Martinez to center is that it breaks up the combo with him and Graf on the right side but I really like the thought of getting Simmons on the field, he's going to be a good one.
Nico Falah Better Stick To USC AndFighton Like A Trojan Same With theRest of the USC Recruits Garry CauseWe Need Good Players
Nico will take his official visit this weekend and I think everything will get solidified.
What are the chances we impress enough this weekend that we end up with Thomas, Powell, and Vanderdoes all on board come signing day?
I think Vanderdoes will end up a Trojan and I think the chances are better with Powell than Thomas. That order could certainly change though depending on how the visits go this weekend.
So.... slow news day hey. Is CP the only candidate for the Usc DC? Is Matthew Thomas from Florida coming this weekend or not
Haha, yeah Chris, nothing going on. Pendergast was not the only candidate, there was a lot of interest in Mark Banker, Nick Aliotti and Joe Barry as well. Matthew Thomas confirmed yesterday that he is coming this weekend on the visit.
USC always seems to "steal" a guy very very late in the recruiting process. This year do you see the same thing happening and if so which Recruit would or could it be ?
If it happens I would keep an eye on CB Jermaine Kelly from Salesian, currently committed to Washington.
Good afternoon Garry,If Clancy Pendergast is in fact the next DC, what kind of reaction do you think his being named will have on recruits (besides Hutchings)? Do you think he'll be running a 3-4 or will he mix fronts, and what effect do you think that will have on D-line recruits specifically? Finally, is he the guy to bring excitement back to SC's defense?
I think the reaction will be solid, he's good a lot of NFL experience which is always important to recruits. He runs a primarily 3-4 defense but he is also known for mixing things up quite a bit. The impact on the d-line will be as dramatic as any position group because of how much they will be asked to occupy linemen instead of always getting after the quarterback. That will be a situation to watch. To be honest, with all due respect to Monte, any new face at the DC spot should bring excitement after what USC fans saw from the defense this year.
Gary,I'm sure you would have preferred that the ruckus after the Sun Bowl story had broken tomorrow instead of today, but I've gotta say that not hearing anything from Haden over the last few weeks and releasing statements just does not seem like the way to administer an athletic department of this magnitude. From top to bottom this all reeks of a lack of leadership. Could you comment, please.
I've talked to a lot of people around SC who wish there was more communication in the last couple weeks. Haden has his way of doing things and this is the way he has chosen to do it, let's see how the results play out. The one thing i've been told is that there is a lot going on that people don't see so don't mistake a lack of information to mean that there is a lack of activity. Like everyone else, I have no idea what that activity has been.
Think The Robinson Twins WellOpen There Recruiting Trails inThe wake of chip Kelly leavingFor the nfl
So far they are saying no, they are sticking with Oregon.
Will the Trojans switch to a base 3-4 front if Clancy Pendergast is their choice for DC? If they do, I think it will be a BIG mistake.
yes, that is the plan. I've talked to multiple former SC players in recent weeks who think it would be a good idea. The main premise for the thinking is the fact that the 3-4 basically switches out a lineman for a more athletic linebacker who can cover more space, which is good against the spread.
Garry, if Bigelow doesn't get cleared for EE, is there time to get Fitts in?
I don't know. The university doesn't let any of that info out so it would just be speculation.
Garry,ESPN is reporting of fist being thrown between players after the Sun Bowl.If this is true, what does it say about the attitude of this team going into and coming out of this bowl game?
I've heard many versions of the story and none of them involved it rising to the level of a fight with punches being thrown. It was definitely a heated verbal situation but that's as far as it went, according to those I've talked with who were in the room.
Hope dc isn't pendergast - if it is what has caused the wait to name him? He isn't the answer to our d problems. Cal d never put fear in any team. Big deal one good game against Oregon couple of years ago.
It sure looks like him at this point.
USC's LB's and DL does NOT fit the 3-4. It will hinder the 3 technique presence of Williams, along with their quick LB's. Why would Kiffen be stupid enough to hire Coach Clancy and potentially loose so many recruits?
The transition to a new scheme is always interesting to see how the personnel would fit. If you look at a couple of the incoming defensive players, Hatcher and Prevot could potentially fit as OLB's. But, as you say, there are always going to be some concerns until the players get on the field because a guy like Williams has looked real comfortable so far.
you think kellys decision has anything to do with oregons impending case with the ncaa?
I think that was a secondary reason but at the end of the day I think Chip wanted to see if his system could succeed in the NFL.
Chances we really get Matthew Thomas to commit to USC
I'm going to put them low right now with the right to change my mind with a good visit.
With chip Kelly leaving, does that mean nico falah is a lock for USC? Or is Desmond Harrison a good alternative if nico goes elsewhere? How sizable of a possibility we get Harrison rather than nico...we need OL
I think Falah ends up at SC and Harrison ends up elsewhere, maybe even ASU.
Do you think LK's success in 2011 gave him a false sense of comfort that made him regress to some of his former negative ways? If thats the case, I think that should gives Trojan fans some optimism as Im sure Haden has imparted (and Kiffin understands) that he has to get his act together (a la 2011) if he wants to keep his job. I believe Kiffin turns things around in 2013 for the sake of self preservation if for no other reason.
I don't think it was a sense of comfort from 2011, although I can understand that thought process. More than anything, I think it was a result of unfamiliar territory, he had never coached as a pre-season #1 and I just think that was a situation that you can't prepare for until you go through it. Will he learn from it and be able to stay away from the distractions? We shall see. You can be sure Haden gave him some pointed words this off-season about different areas of team management.
Was Ken Norton Jr. ever in play for the DC job?
I never heard that confirmed.
That's all the time we have for today. See you next week.
