Chat with Pierre LeBrun

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:59 PM)

Bonjour les amis ! Greetings from Toronto. Let's talk NHL season 2013 !

Mike S (British Columbia Canada)

Since Andrey Makarov was signed by Buffalo as a free agent after going through 2 drafts does that also mean a guy like JC Lipon can be signed as a free agent since he also went through 2 drafts?

Pierre LeBrun
  (12:59 PM)

yes

Brian (Arizona)

For the past 3 years, everyone has picked against the Yotes. When will the media finally give them the respect they deserve?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:00 PM)

I picked them to make the playoffs last year ! I just feel they're going to be in tough this year but I still wouldn't be surprised if they made it again

Matt (VA)

How do you see the Caps finishing this season?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:01 PM)

I love the Adam Oates hiring, but overall I'm not as high on the Caps as many people are. I think they'll be battling for 7-8-9-10 in the East.I'm picking Carolina to wint the Southeast

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What NHL Team will be Playing at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn in the Next Future sharing with the NBA's Nets?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:01 PM)

The New York Islanders are moving there in a few years once their lease is up on Long Island

Todd (Atlanta)

Hi Pierre, What do you think of the Wilds dmen this year. Goalsa should be more abundentthis year. Do you see a playoff birth for them? Thanks

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:06 PM)

Obviously Suter is a major addition. I think Spurgeon is underrated. Dumba is going to be a stud one day. Falk is the real deal. Overall, however, still a littler thinner as a group than I'd like to see on a contender. I think the Wild definitely make the playoffs though. Going to be a fun team to watch

Chatardio (Chatopia)

Any news on the Dominic Hasek front? Surely he can handle a 48 game schedule where he does not have to play every game, even if he is almost 48 years old.

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:07 PM)

he's retired. for real this time :)

Chatardio (Chatopia)

If Nonis of the Maple Leafs is fired after this season, then who in your opinion do you suppose George Cole might hire? My preference is for Mike Keenan to be the next G.M. of the Maple Leafs.

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:08 PM)

Well hopefully that doesn't happen to Nonis, good man and a smart hockey dude. But if there is a change of scenery, I would expect a wide-ranging search.I don't think Keenan would be in that mix, however.

Bill (Toronto)

Any word on PK Subban negotiations? Is it money or term length holding things up or both? Will he be in a Habs uniform on Jan 19th?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:08 PM)

Haven't checked on that today but last I heard term was a big issue. Subban wants long term, Habs want to go 2 years

Bill (Toronto)

What do you plan as your first NHL game day meal on the 19th? A greasy burger? A nice hot plate of poutine? Whatever they put out for the press at the arena?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:09 PM)

Well since I'll be travelling to Montreal for Leafs-Habs opener, poutine for sure :)

Charles Wang (Long Island)

Pierre, so you are telling me the new CBA has rules that limit player contracts to a maximum length of 8 years? For reals? So if Rick DiPietro or Alexei Yashin tell me they will only re-sign with the NYI for a minimum 15 year deal.....they are definitely joking right? Man what a relief I don't have to make those decisions anymore. I love the new CBA!

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:09 PM)

Yes Charles, they had you in mind when they put in that rule

Gary Bettman (New York City)

Pierre, as soon as camps opened on Sunday people started coming out in force to see their teams. 6000 fans in St. Louis, 5000 fans in Tampa, 5000 fans in Winnipeg, huge media throngs in Pittsburgh, New York and Toronto. Isn't this what the league/owners were counting on all along? That hockey fans are SOOOO hardcore that their fondness for their teams would far overshadow any anger over the lockout. We could sacrifice a few "casual fans" when we knew the hardcores would always be there. The joke is on you my friend *laughs maniacally like Dr. Evil*

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:15 PM)

Let's look at attendance at the end of the season. Maybe the damage won't be as bad as I thought, but too early to tell yet

Chatardio (Chatopia)

Which player, in your opinion, is going to have the better season: Kessel or Semin?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:16 PM)

Phil Da Thrill

Pens Fan (Pittsburgh, PA)

Pierre, most "experts" are picking the Penguins as one of the favorites in the east. With Malkin and a healthy Crosby in the fold, it is easy to understand why. But hasn't anybody CHECKED THE GAME RESULTS FROM THE PAST FEW YEARS! Since they won the Cup in 2009, the Pens are mediocre at best against the Atlantic Division (helped a lot by beating the Islanders 5 times a year) and have been flat out brutal against Philly, NJD and Washington....including a combined 0-10 against NJD and WSH in 2010. And then there were the playoffs last year. Doesn't having a schedule heavily weighted towards division play actually hurt them in the tough Atlantic. I am petrified that the opening weekend at Philly and at NYR will be more of the same.

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:17 PM)

I picked Rangers to win the Cup but I think Boston, Pitt and Philly will be right there with them. My biggest concern in Pitt is Fleury. Can he rebound from that disastrous first round last spring???

Adam (New York)

What would it take for the Panthers to reacquire Luongo

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:17 PM)

richer owners

Alex (Anaheim)

Do you ever think we'll see a full season shorter than 82 games?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:18 PM)

can't see NHLPA nor NHL wanting to shrink Hockey Related Revenue pie which they share 50-50

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:19 PM)

Maybe best song ever playing right now on my tunes, Free Falling by Tom Petty

Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)

Pierre, in a shortened season we all know that one good 10-game stretch can single-handedly get a team into the playoffs, while one bad 10-game stretch can sink a team with no time to recover. Keeping that in mind, which "bad" teams do you think will make the playoffs that otherwise wouldn't in a full season, and which "good" teams will miss out. How about Edmonton or NYI in, with Detroit, San Jose or NJD out.

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:20 PM)

great question, Jesse, and welcome back. I fear for Devils with losses of Parise/Sykora how they come out of the gates... I think Edmonton has a shot at a fast start with 11 guys playing during the lockout between AHL and Europe

Drew (Indy)

Hey Pierre! I think the Pens acquisition of Vokoun is kind of flying under the radar. In this compressed schedule it is going to be very important to have two solid goalies. That's why I think teams like PIT, STL, NYR, and VAN(if they keep Luongo) have an advantage.

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:20 PM)

great point and you are right, it is flying under the radar. Teams will need to trust 2 goalies with compressed schedule

Drew (Indy)

Calder prediction?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:21 PM)

Mikael Granlund, Minny

Devin (PA)

Pick one of each from around the league to have a career year this season. F,D,G.

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:25 PM)

some sleepers I like:Slava Voynov in LA, Raphael Diaz in Mtl (especially if Subban contract fights goes long), Tarasenko in StL, Craig Smith in Nashville, John Carlson in Wash

Will (Cincinnati)

Who benefits the most from the short season? The least?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:26 PM)

Veteran teams welcome it

Mike (SJ)

Last CBA question until 2020! Any chance the new CBA expires on July 1st instead of September 15th? Having it end at the start of the off season and preventing all the FAs from signing deals and from GMs putting their rosters together might help get a deal done to start a season on time in 8-10 years. It worked for the NFL...

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:26 PM)

No, unfortunately, it expires Sept. 15 again

Matt R. (Hockeytown)

Do the Wings take a chance on Redden to add some experienced depth? How about making a play for PK Subban?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:27 PM)

A source told me today that the Wings are undecided right now... certainly something they're mulling over but not clear whether or not they do it or not

Elliot (Minnesota)

Who's the most underrated player in the league?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:29 PM)

Jamie Benn

Elliot (Minnesota)

What are your picks for MVP, Norris, Vezina, and Calder?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:29 PM)

Hart _ CrosbyNorris _ CharaVezina _ LundqvistCalder _ Granlund

Mike (SJ)

How likely do you think it is that 2014 is the last Olympics with NHL players? With 2018 being in Korea - a country that ranks just above Mexico in the World Rankings - I think hockey should make an effort to make it's World Cup the ultimate international prize, like it is in soccer.

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:30 PM)

It's a great question and I don't have an answer for you. NHL, NHLPA, IOC and IIHF slated to meet over next month to discuss future Olympic participation. But you're right about Koria 2018, that won't be appealing too much to NHL

Tim (Oswego,)

With Bobrovski and Mason battling it out in Columbus, and neither goalie seeming to overtake the other, who would you predict gets the start Saturday? I'd think Bob.

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:31 PM)

Mason came to camp in great shape I hear...

Kyle (Frisco, CO)

Will O'Reilly (COL) sign at all during the season? If not, do they still have a chance of making the playoffs without him?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:33 PM)

Find it hard to believe he won't eventually sign

wesley (toronto)

hey Pierre thanks for doing this just wondering any update on bernier situation and how serious are the leafs to pursue him? are they just doing check up calls?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:34 PM)

My understanding that yes, Leafs and Kings had a brief discussion, very very preliminary, not serious at this point. Kings plan on leaning hard on Bernier with compressed schedule... it would have to be a dandy of a deal for Kings to move him to any team this season. Doesn't mean it can't happen _ it may very well since that LA's top trading chip _ but I'm saying LA isn't pushing this. It's other teams calling

Robert (Hamburg, NY)

What should/could the Sabres do regarding their logjam of D-men?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:35 PM)

My own personal feeling having covered the NHL for 18 years: teams never have enough d-men. It's akin to pitching in baseball.

oklend (toronto)

With the canucks missing 2/3 of the second line do they still have a chance of making a run, and who would fill those 2 spots until Kesler and Booth come back?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:35 PM)

Certainly whatever return they get on Luongo if/when they trade him, it must include second-line forward help But all signs seem to point for a slow start for Van. Just seems to be a dark cloud hanging over them right now

randy countryman (canada )

since boucher is on waviers with the flyers does that mean they will take a chance on roli ?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:36 PM)

no plan all along was Boucher to start with Phantoms but he had to clear waivers first

Kyle (Toronto)

So far the trade winds have been quiet, do you anticipate it changing once the season gets underway or will teams become even more locked in with their rosters?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:38 PM)

as one NHL GM told me this week, he wants to see his team play for 2-3 weeks before he knows for sure what he's lacking/needs... I'm guessing that's same for most teams

Brian (Boston)

If you take away all of the Bourque nostalgia here in Boston, is Chris a viable 3rd line winger at this level. Not much luck with Was or Pit

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:39 PM)

good wheels but I'd say more fourth line

Nick (Toronto)

Hey Pierre, thanks for doing this as always. What is your thought on the Getzlaf/Perry situation in Anaheim? I thought Burke would go real hard after these guys in the summer (for obvious reasons), and I have a hard time seeing them sign with Anaheim now after deciding not too before the lockout. Do you see one or both of them ending up in Toronto? Would Luongo tending net here help lure FA's here as well?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:40 PM)

Going to be really really really interesting how this plays out in Anaheim. Last year all the buzz was around Nashville with Suter/Weber. This year Anaheim is that team. I know Ducks GM Bob Murray hoping to meet with agents for both players over next month or so. And I know agents Pat Morris and Mark Guy of Newport Sports planning to fly to Cali over next month to sit down with Corey Perry and discuss his future. But in the end, I think it's pretty simple, either Ducks have them signed to extension before April 3 deadline or they're dealt

Keith Kosmal (Chicago Illinois)

Do you believe the blackhawks management will/should look into picking up Scott Gomez to add some depth to Center position?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:43 PM)

No, my understanding is the Hawks don't have any interest

Kris (Cleveland)

Bonjour Pierre!!!!!! With Burke gone now due to "irreconcilable differences", do you see the Leafs now using their financial power to get RFAs and UFAs? Now that bonuses don't count against the cap, could you see the Leafs now offering HEAVY bonus contracts to lure prospects to their team?

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:44 PM)

yes

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:55 PM)

yes

Pierre LeBrun
  (1:56 PM)

Sorry folks, took a phone call I couldn't ignore

Bill (Pasadena,CA)

Hi Pierre, nice to be talking hockey and not lockout finally! Just was wondering on what your thoughts on how the defending Stanley Cup Champs season shapes up? Odds on a repeat? Got some injury issues(Kopi's knee and Quick's back), but the whole team is back. Thanks and let's finally play some hockey!

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:00 PM)

Love the fact they have 2 goalies they trust, love the fact they're brought back the same team essentially, but concerned that they haven't had many players playing during lockout

bruce (detroit)

Will Damien Brunner be eligible for the calder trophy? Does he have a shot?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:01 PM)

No I checked with the NHL yesterday just to make sure but he turned 26 last March _ anyone who turns 26 before Sept. 15 of that season can't qualify for Calder

Jamie Benn (Toronto?)

Why haven't I received an offer sheet yet? I'm a Peacok! I need to Fly!

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:01 PM)

Because the Dallas Stars would match any offer sheet in 14 seconds

Steven (Edmonton)

Do expect to see Ryan O'Reilly in an Avs uniform this year?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:01 PM)

yes

Cody (Vancouver)

Hey Pierre, who is your prediction for comeback/suprise player of the year? Can't wait for you next segment on the team.

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:01 PM)

Matt Duchene for comeback

Joe (Texas)

Pierre, can we get your thoughts on Adam Oates moving Ovechkin from Left Wing to Right? Do you think that's a move that's likely to benefit the Caps (and Ovie) this year?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:02 PM)

Well Oates played with a couple of right-handed wingers that were pretty good (Hull, Neely) so he must know what he's doing :)

Patrick (Washington.D.C)

So the Lockout ended on Saturday January 12,2013. Why is it then if neither side options out of it it is set to expire Sept 15,2022. That's not a 10 year deal is it?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:03 PM)

this season is counted as one full year

Keith (Chicago)

Do you think the Blackhawks are going to go after Gomez to add some depth to center?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:03 PM)

no

Lee (Durham, NC)

Semin, Staal, Skinner, Staal. That foursome has the potential to do some real damage. What are realistic expectations for Carolina this season?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:03 PM)

I picked them to win the Southeast

Paul H. (Philadelphia, PA)

Pierre, so my friend, each team can buy out up tp 2 "bad" contracts. Assuming I decide to dump our Russian goalie, any thoughts on what it might take to pry the rights to Mr. Thomas from Boston?

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:04 PM)

Homer, if I were you, I'd wait and see how Bryz does this season. If he's stinko again, and Luongo remains in Vancouver after the season, I dial up 604 area code, trade for Roberto, and then give Bryz the old buyout loveBut that's just me :)

Pierre LeBrun
  (2:05 PM)

OK cool cats, sorry for all of those I didn't get to. Great to be talking actual hockey again. Until next week
