What a week. I spent three days at the Senior Bowl talking to coaches and scouts about the what the heck the Cowboys are doing, Jay Ratliff got arrested and the Manti Te'o story just won't go away. Cowboys, Rangers, Mavs are all open for discussion. Let's roooooollllll!!
do you see the cowboys returning to the playoffs in 2013, with the transition from the 3-4 to the 4-3, I think the monte kiffins becoming the DC was a great move, what are your thoughts?
I love your passion, but none of us have any idea. We don't even know who's going to be on the team. Who will they add in FA? Who will they add in the draft? Until we know the answers, it's strictly guessing. Based on what we've seen, the Cowboys will be in playoff hunt. It's jut a matter of whether they can get it done at the end
How do you think that the Stars Look this Year since NHL is Back in Business?
Sorry, haven't paid much attention to the Stars yet. 2-1 is a good start and I like what I've seen from Jagr so far.
Does Jerry Jones finally get some great defensive ends this off season?
DeMarcus Ware is a good start. Tyrone Crawford will probably start at the other end.
Have you heard anything about the cowboys being in talks with spencer?
The Cowboys seem as tough they've made up their mind that Spencer isn't going to be here. He wants DeMarcus War money, which is a lot to pay a guy who's the strongside linebacker in the 4-3, where he'd spend a lot of time covering the tight end
Will the cowboys find another linebacker in the draft or free agency?
I would think so
Do you think this defense can keep ratliff healthy because he will get less double teams? and also how do you think crawford and lissermore will be used?
Crawford will probably start, Lissemore will continue to be a quality rotational player and I don't know if Ratliff will be here next year after getting arrested and charged with driving under the influence. Let's see how his case works out. It should help Ratliff stay healthy, but his body is so beat up right now who knows if it will matter
Will this be garrett last year if the team doesnt make the playoffs?
I would think so. make the playoffs or get fired
We dont have great cover safeties so how do you think they will be used in this scheme?
They might add one in the draft, otherwise they're going to have to play with what they have. Sensabaugh does some things well, but is overall an average player. The other spot is wide open until Barry Church returns from his Achilles injury
Do you think the cowboys should adopt a form of the pistol offense or spread? because thats seems to be sucessful today
I don't think Romo runs that well. The offense gets enough yards, they have to stop the stupid mistakes, especially in the red zone
Why don t you think Jason Garrett becomes more creative with his offensive and play calling? it seems from watching that you can tell the cowboys are going to run and theres nothing complex about there passing game
The Colts ran the most simplistic offense in the NFL with Reggie Wayne, Marvin Harrison and Peyton Manning. It's about execution. The Cowboys' offense has always gained plenty of yards, they just haven't scored enough points
Who you go in the bowl?
SF, though the 2 weeks off will really help Baltimore
Why is it that Jerry Jones fires Skip Peete, Rob Ryan pratically in an instant but when it's come to Jason Garrett's roles on the team, he's taken his sweet time dealing with that?
Because he wants Garrett to succeed. He hopes these moves will help him. I have my doubts
Hi, which FA would help the Rangers more: Lohse or Bourn?
Bourn, but I'm not sure I'd sign either. Lohse isn't a difference-maker as a starter and Bourn's arrival would mean Leonys Martin and Craig Gentry are role players
Hello JJT, is it wishful thinking by the Rangers to think that Leonys Martin can be a competent starting center fielder and Martin Perez a solid fifth starter?
I don't think you can expect both. I'd be thrilled with one. I always take pitching over hitting
JJT, Archer is suggesting that the Boys cut ties with Rattlif and I think some of the other Dallas columnists maybe CW also said so before this happened...and it was because the guy is aging and showing signs of breaking down...plus the incident with Jerry in the LockerRoom...is the timing right to go after a DT in the draft and cut this guy in June or whenever they save more?
it depends on his health. How healthy do the Cowboys think he'll be this season. Do they believe he has a lot left? If so, keep him. If not, cut him.
Jerry said he liked Berndaeu and Livings, who to me at least, played very poorly in 2012. Is that just talk or we are going to not address the O-Line again this year?
They'll address the OL, but Bernadeau was a much bigger problem than Livings
JJT, Love your work. With what he has done this off season, has Jerry Jones now hit full Al Davis crazy levels?
That's easy to say. I just think he's made some questionable decisions. Even if you like his decisions, the manner in which he's done them has not been sound. He's cut his coach off at the knees
In your opinion do you feel all of these staff decisions were premeditated or is this all just a giant overreaction to another poor season?
some of it is definitely an overreaction to losing to Washington, but that's what happens when you go 8-8 in consecutive seasons
JJT, With the new scheme on defense, new special teams coach, new play caller, etc, will the Cowboys roster need to turn over even more than might have been expected?
they were probably going to change about 25 percent of the roster anyway. It just means the pieces will be different. They need help on both lines
JJT, I agree with you completely on Jerry undercutting Garrett. But since he has not fired him, I wonder - Is there anything Jerry could do that would actually force Jason Garrett's pride to kick in and quit at this point?
no one is going to walk away from $3-4million each of the last two seasons
Odds Jon Gruden is coaching the Cowboys a month from now? And odds he's coaching them in 2014?
1-one million in 2013. 50-50 in 2014
JJT, As Jerry does his own thing this off season, I'm wondering who in the organization or in his life actually has the cajones to tell him when he's making bad decisions? It doesn't appear any one is doing so right now.
It doesn't matter if u tell him he's making a bad decision, because he OWNS it so he can make the FINAL decision
Does Dez have security/chaperones with him in the offseason?
Deion said on ben and Skin this morning that the cowboys dont need to run a tampa 2 because they have outstanding man to man guys. So why did they make this move if to monte if the personnel doesnt fit?
The Cowboys disagree. They believe their CBs can play press, can play off and can tackle in the flats
With any new system it takes 2 years to adjust to and get the players you need. so how could jerry expect to win next year with a defensive overhaul?
It didn't take Jim Harbaugh 2 years to come into SF and make it happen. Don't hand out excuses. Everyone is getting fired if it takes 2 years
After writing an article that u were behind red j, then wrote another one that u flip flopped against him, wanted to see where u stand??
I haven't flip-flopped at all. Not once. Not even a little bit. I like Garrett. What I said was that if Jerry is going to usurp his authority and make it clear to everyone that he has no juice, then he should just fire him. My position on that has remained the same.
If the Mavs where number 2 on dwights list after the brooklyn nets. is it safe to say that there number one to get him after the seasons over now that the nets signed brook lopez long term
They're in the hunt. They don't have much to offer in a trade to Lakers and I'm not sure why he;d want to join a team that doesn't have much other than 35-year-old Dirk. You also have to winder if he could handle Rick Carlisle
How far away is dallas from competing with a san fran or baltimore (elite teams) whom they've played tough in the past?
i'd say not close, but each year is different. The Cowboys need some intangibles to get over the hump
If the cowboys pay spencer will they have to pay him as a defensive linemen or what he did in the past as a linebacker?
LB, but they're probably not going to be able to afford him
Was turnovers the only reason the cowboys let rob go?
It was a big reason. Not enough sacks. Not enough negative plays. Not enough impact. They had no real identity. They were OK, but not special - no matter what they were ranked
This secondary was at its best last year when they played man to man lockdown, but got ate up late in the season when injuries caused them to play zone schemes. So will Monte Adjust to what the players do well and whats your thoughts on the cowboys keeping henderson on staff?
for the most part, they're going to play a 2-deep zone - the Tampa 2 that he helped make famous
the cowboys are always among the lead leaders in total yards on offense but they dont put up alot of point per game. do you think this is one of the causes for the change in play callers?
Absolutely. Among the reasons for the discrepancy between yards and points is the shoddy running game, which helps in the red zone. Too many penalties in the red zone that turn manageable situations into bad situations.
Where will Crawford play in this new defense?
Who will be dealt at the trade deadline for the mavs?
Everyone not named Dirk and, maybe OJ Mayo, is available. Vince Carter is most likely to be traded, I think
JJT, what is next for the the Circus at Valley Ranch? Any chance they try to go after Revis? I know they need other players for positions.
The Cowboys just spent $50 million on a CB and the 6th pick on the draft on another CB., Why trade for Revis?
JJT, Are there two coaches in the country who do less with more resources than Mack Brown and Rick Barnes?
Hmmmmm. I can't think of two. Tough times in Austin.
What's the deal with the WR coach? Why is his status up in the air?
Jerry was pretty cryptic about Jimmy Robinson. I think he's having some health issues. He probably won't coach WRs next season, but might remain on the staff
What's the one thing that annoys you the most about the cowboys?
Jerry too often operates without a plan. Six coaches since 1997. No NFC team has had more
How is Dez's back?
Do you think the Cowboys will be more successful with someone else calling plays and kiffin running the defense?
we can't really know until we know who gets added in FA and the draft
Stays or gone..MilesSpencerFelixJenkinsJason Garrett
16-16 the last two seasons. How do you think they can change that?
stop making so many dumb mistakes mental and physical. The Cowboys could win a lot more games, if they played clean games
Why did Joe-D decide to leave dallas for Chicago?
his deal was up and they didn't re-sign him
Do you think the rangers are done with moves until the trade deadline?
big deals? yes. Small deals? maybe not
JJT, did the Rangers overplay their hand this offseason?
A little bit. It's hard to know why their moves failed. All we know is offseason was not that great because they missed their top 3 offseason targets
JJT,I can see one solid player being added in FA with the cap room they have the ability to create.......would you prefer to see a RT or a FS come in as there are about 3 solid due to hit FA for each position?
given their slaty cap issues, I don't know that they will add anyone in FA
U ugly JJT
Dude, I'm holding a mirror
JJT, If Callahan is going to be the next play caller, how does this Tim Brown-Jerry Rice fiasco impact Callahan's standing in the locker room?
none. those allegations are ridiculous
Manti Te'o is there at 18 - do you draft him for the Cowboys?
no. he's an inside linebacker. they don't need that
Hey JJT, If you are Jason Garrett and Jerry does what he's done this offseason do you quit out of pride and principle or stick it out and make him fire you like Jason is doing?
u quit, u don't get paid
Biggest mistake Jerry has made this offseason? Best move - if you can find one?
mistake: trying to spin the play-calling move as one Garrett supports and that it's not a demotionbest move: hiring Rod Marinelli, who's one of the best in the business
JJT, We would like to point out to your readers (and Jerry Jones) that the great Tom Brady and Bill Belichick mismanaged the clock too. Yes, they have all those rings, but just sayin...
Ok, when y'all get some rings - other than those in your bathtub - we'll pay attention
Do you see us going after any big time free agents?
nope. Tight cap.
Texas A&M - do they beat Alabama and make the SEC title game next season?
I don't think so, but they've proved me wrong before
Just saw some Dallas radio guys talking about trading picks and getting out of the 1st round for more. If memory serves me right you hate this philosophy and so do I just wrote about it few minutes ago and how it gets Jerry and the Cowboys in trouble you still think trading picks away is bad for this franchise or any for that matter cuz I do?
dumb. dumb. dumb. Take the best player available - the player you want, not the guy who's left - and do it again in the next round
Are the Rangers still World Series contenders?
playoff contenders - not WS this season
Should I be upset if I'm a Ranger's fan about this offseason?
What do you think of the Ranger's moves or lack thereof this offseason? Do you think it was a mistake the Rangers will regret not going all in on Justin Upton?
upton is not the difference between winning & losing a title. Still have a shot at Stanton or Price
Garrett is a smart guy, he realizes Gruden's Tampa Bay-Oakland coaching staff is being installed around him, right?
if u believe in conspiracy theories. If u win enough games, it won't matter
Hi, what do you think will happen to Profar this year? Will he spend the whole year in the minors, get called up, or get traded?
he'll get called up at some time before June
I gotta go. I'm writing a column on the Mavs today and I'm co-hosting on ESPNDallas 103.3 from 6-9 tonight and the day is getting away from me
