Chat with Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (12:00 PM)

Hey Hey!!!

Nick (Denver) [via mobile]

Out of Greg Jennings, Mike Wallace and Dwayne Bowe which one if any will remain with their team?

Matt Williamson
  (12:01 PM)

Doubt any of them do, but if I had to pick one, I would say Bowe. New staff there. Might coax him back.

Ryan (Chicago)

What can you tell me about the Marc Trestman offense and how our personnel fits into that system?

Matt Williamson
  (12:02 PM)

I can't say I know the specifics, but I have watched my share of CFL tape and they spread the field quite a bit and incorporate a lot of presnap motion. Will that translate with CHI? It could, but I also expect Forte's role as a receiver to grow once again-almost like Martz was there. Either way, OL still needs to be addressed overall and they could use one more weapon in the passing game.

Squall (Balamb Garden)

Can't wait for the Pro Bowl Cover It Live! ...no?

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

Oh no no no no Squall!

Warren (Newtown, CT)

Your thoughts on the Eagles and the Chip Kelly hiring?

Matt Williamson
  (12:04 PM)

I am excited to see it in action. No question. I certainly have my questions-like, why would you switch from a pure 4-3 to a 3-4 (thus opening up all kinds of new needs) when the O needs all sorts of things now to make Kelly's system work. Starting at QB-who is that guy going to be? But the OL surely will be much better due to health and they have some big play/fast paced guys, including McCoy, who I expect to thrive

K (philly)

Do you see a low scoring Super Bowl? who do you like?

Matt Williamson
  (12:06 PM)

My preview went up on INSIDER just about an hour ago. I picked SF 27-20...but this is the same guy that has picked against the Ravens in every playoff game. But I certainly respect what BALT has done, but just happen to like SF better.

Derek (San Francisco)

Do you see the 49ers addressing the wide receiver positon in either the draft, free agency, neither?

Matt Williamson
  (12:06 PM)

Yes, but I still have high hopes for Jenkins and think he could start opposite Crabtree next year. But yes, they need one more.

Squall (Balamb Garden)

I'm with you on not feeling this Monte Kiffin shift in Big D. But are there any young players on the roster who might, in time, do better in his scheme?

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

I really dislike it from a CB perspective-and I don't think think it extends Ware's career. Lee and Carter should thrive though. And it might make things easier on very average Safeties. Does this mean Spencer goes? I have to think so, which is a shame-very good season. Where are the 4-3 DEs?

Derek (San Francisco)

Will the NFC West be the best Division in football next year if you don't already consider it was this year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

Yup..and Yes, best this year too

Rob (San Antonio)

Once the dust has cleared do you think Teo's stock drops in the draft?

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

I don't know a ton about him or any of the prospects yet, but I am digging in heavy to the draft. But I have never seen Teo has a Top 10 type pick. You have be awfully good to pull that off as a MLB. Is he P Willis? Or even Kuechley? Playmaker for sure, but wow, he got pushed around vs. Bama.

Jack (Cleveland)

With Ray Horton as the new DC in Cleveland, what do you make of the switch to the 3-4? How will Wynn, Rubin, Taylor, Hughes, Sheard, DQ fit in?

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

This transition doesn't bother me as much, as I think Taylor will excel at NT and Rubin could be a very good DE in the 3-4. Sheard is prob athletic enough to play OLB on the strong side, but even before this change, I thought a dynamic edge player opposite Sheard was their biggest need. Now, they really need to nab a stud with that first round pick that can project to OLB. Wynn and Hughes should also be fine at DE and no worries about Jackson at ILB. Another ILB is prob needed though.

John (Wisc)

At this point I could make a case for the Packers taking every position outside of QB, K/P in the first round. If you are picking for them what position would you take first?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

You make good points. I would take WR and TE out of that equation as well-and I think they are quite set in the secondary. But if/when Jennings leaves, they should add something at WR. I would say best available at OC, RB, OT, OLB or ILB...Bishop's return is big though

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

More embarassing for Tom Terrific - not knowing how to slide properly, or not being able to outrun a 350 lb. man four yards?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

The latter...that Ty Cobb slide looked rather deliberate to me....spikes high

Johnny (Denver)

Did Champ's performance against Torrey Smith accelerate his move to safety or is he still a true #1 caliber corner?

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

Champ had a very good year, but speed guys like Smith give him problems and DEN's game plan was obviously flawed leaving him alone on Smith for so long. Stays at CB

Hanson (DC)

Anthony Spencer to the Colts? Will his price tag be too high with all their other needs?

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

He will be very pricey. I guess you are assuming Freeney is gone? Hughes played well though and Mathis will be there.

John (SF)

Niners are already probably the most complete team in the NFL, what position do you think they need the most in the draft?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

WR wouldn't be a terrible idea. Goldson could leave, so S makes sense. Can never hurt to add DL to the equation, esp considering that J Smith isn't a young guy. Maybe CB. Still...GREAT situation to be in.

mark rivera (florida)

is time running out for the Pats?????????????

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

I don't think so. I don't think Brady played well at all-and maybe he isn't what he once was. But I also contend that game is WAY different with Gronk and Talib-or if Talib even just stayed healthy. Zero pass rush and then they were overmatched in coverage. But the O deserves plenty of blame too. Still have a strong group of youngsters though.

Hanson (DC)

Are defenses catching up to offenses? 49ers and Ravens(when healthy) very good defense get to the SB,start of a evening of Off and Def mix to be in the big game?

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

Not sure I am buying that. I feel like you need to have 2 of these 3: A big time passing game, running game and/or D. ATL had one. GB had one. SF has two for sure. And I would say BALT has 3/4 of each.

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

Pearl Jam "Black" Live at East Rutherford....

Dave (charlotte)

What do you think of Mike Lombardi going back to Cleveland? Did you work with him when you were there?

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

I did not. But what I will say about him, is that as a media scout, Mike and I do/did similar things-and I thought he was at the very top of this profession that I am currently in. Wish him luck.

Ruth (Alaska)

Do you see the Pats improving pass rush on the inside or the edge? With Jones and Nink any shot they go hard after Henry Melton?

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

I see Jones as a stud-as he showed early in the season. Injuries just derailed his rookie season. Nink is a good enough complement, but adding someone on the interior-even if just on passing downs-would be great. But when this secondary is right, they blitz a lot, which is key. Hightower should be a real good blitzer.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Did Bo Jackson really run like a 4.1-4.2 at the combine? At like 240? Man I miss that guy...and I'm a Broncos fan...

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

Supposedly. I don't think that is urban legand. Maybe the most amazing athlete of our generation.

Hanson (DC)

Bruce Arians QBs tend to get it because he runs more vertical pass game.Cards line is as bad or worse than the Colts, can Kevin Kolb last more than 6 games in that offense and with that line?

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

BA is great with QBs,but as you alluded to-they take a massive beating. Now, the season isn't starting tomorrow, so Zona has time to improve in these areas and-those two rookie OTs did get better as the season went along and L Brown is coming back. But I see your concern-and it is a VERY legit concern. I don't see anyone resembling Luck/Ben physically on that squad.

John (SF)

Any thoughts on how to fix NYJ's QB situation? Is Alex Smith a good solution?

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

Smith isn't a good solution, but he is a good stop gap and an obvious improvemnt. Would need to win games 16-10, which is Rex's formula anyways. I would have no problem with that signing, but I also think Harbaugh maximized Smith's abilities much better than the Jets would.

Brian (LI)

Will take a chance on Brandon Jacobs this year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

I am not a fan

Kyle (work)

Landing spots for Wes Welker: Patriots, Broncos, Green Bay, Dallas...in that order?

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

Not Green Bay with Cobb around. Pats and Broncos seem most likely. Dallas has so much other work that needs done-can't see that one.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Do we have to start to consider Flacco elite? I don't, I see him comparable to Eli, hot & cold but plays great in the playoffs...he'll get elite money...

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

He will certainly get Elite money...I don't see him as Elite, but I also think that word is thrown around WAY too much. A Franchise QB though-and they don't grow on trees.

Mike (Ottawa)

I just heard a rumor (on Boston radio) about the Browns trading their #1 to NE for Mallet. Any legs to this rumor (does it make sense for Clev)? please tell me no

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

I like Mallet and he REALLY fits what they want to do now. Pocket passer with a gun. Big time run game and OL...deep throws. But that price seems WAY too steep. 2nd rounder? Fine

Frazier (Philly)

Dont you think the Niners should replace Akers for the Super Bowl? Ravens showed they can make good offenses settle for FGs. Cant afford to lose a Super Bowl because your kicker cant make 35 yarders

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

For Cundiff? Not sure there is a pile of great PKs just sitting home right now without a contract...but that is a MASSIVE worry for SF in what should be a tight game.

Bobby (Foxboro)

That story could have legs...Lombardi and Belichik are friends.

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

That story could have legs-very good fit too. But for a high first round pick?

Anthony (Taipei, Taiwan)

Are the Chiefs really a QB away from contending in the AFC West? Assuming they work it out with Bowe & Albert? Or is it just smoke being blown by the new Admins?????

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

I believe they are. I actually picked them to win the division this year with the thought that Cassel wouldn't turn the ball over and they would win close games. Turnovers and QB destroyed this team.

Andrew (SF)

Ridiculous question: if each team could take 1 player in the league and add them to the roster for the SB, who would it be for each?

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

Wow, that is rediculous, but I will bite. Hmmm...for SF, how about Calvin J? That wouldn't be bad, right? For Balt? How about Calvin J! Or JJ Watt, V Miller perhaps? A healthy Revis?

Michael (Cincinnati) [via mobile]

Phil Dawson to SF

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

Not by next Sunday

Rob (San Antonio)

Steelers GM says things need to be shaken up. Do you see them players in the free agent market this year, especially at running back ala Bettis?

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

They traded for Bettis actually-after the Rams decided they preferred L Phillips! Anyways, I do expect changes. Some big names with a lot of age and big contracts that might need to hit the road or seriously restructure. Wallace should be gone. Not sure how much that leaves them to spend though.

Dennis (RI)

Welker to Pittsburgh, Wallace to New England...fair trade?

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

Both are free agents though!

Andrew (SF)

Haha thanks for taking. Assumed it's be Calvin or JJ.

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

I am sure we could come up with other great players to add...but Calvin is awfully tough to disagree with. CK to Calvin with Crabtree on the other side and VD streaking up the seam? Oh baby

Hotcakes (Vancouver)

Does Lattimore have a chance of being drafted despite that horrific injury?

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

Sounds like it. Somewhat of a McGahee-like situation from what I gather. Prob red shirt Lattimore all year in 2013-and he certainly won't be a first rounder.

Rob (San Antonio)

Steelers don't need a Welker. That is Browns role.

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

That I agree with too....if they add WR, it should be a guy with size-red zone guy

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

Green Day "Are We the Waiting" (LIVE)

Micah (CT)

ROY should go to... Morris? He was actually better than RG3 kid was a rock

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

The voting does not include the post season or Wilson would win it going away. Based just on the regular season, I picked Luck slightly over Wilson. Brutal to choose, but Luck was just asked to do so much more from Day 1.

John (Wisc)

Love Green Day!

Matt Williamson
  (12:40 PM)

I was late to the Green Day train, but they are fantastic

Hotcakes (Vancouver)

In terms of the Hawks, I think WR is a greater need than the O or D lines this offseason. I don't think you can count on Rice being healthy again for a full season. Thoughts?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Not avoiding the question, but I think it is very team-dependent. Very different type WRs, like you mentioned. What does each team need?

Dave (work)

2012 Budget vs. Actuals...(live) via conference call

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Nice...one of my favs...I have all their albums

Hanson (DC)

Mike Wallace one trick pony or the type guy that can open up an offense for others? Will his price tag be to high to bring is as a compliment kinda guy?

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

One trick pony, but it is a fantastic trick that few can do as well. But how long can he do that for? Bad ankle or knee injury and how effective is Wallace after that? He will be expensive, but I would love to see him in Minny to open up more running room for Peterson and the underneath stuff to Rudolph and Harvin.

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Sorry...computer froze up....need a new laptop after the season

Ray (Ny)

Landing spot for Tim Tebow next year: NFL or CFL?

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

I think he is more suited to the CFL, but with the influx of read option and all these running QBs, I would think TT is now more attractive as a backup to one of these guys....although the RG3, CKs, and Wilsons of the NFL can really throw it. Timmy can't

Eric (San Diego)

Asked to Mort last hour- starting a team, do you take Kap or Cam?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Not an easy question. Cam has been overlooked a little this year, but I still take CK narrowly

N (W)

Mike Wallace to the Bears would be cool.

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Indeed....slow track though

Mitch (NC)

Shouldn't Tim Tebow suck it up and play whatever position that keeps him in the NFL? Couldn't be he a decent RB or FB?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

He is a very good runner with the football-for a QB...but he doesn't make people miss like an NFL RB

Rayshawn (Kentucky )

Do you see NE franchising Vollmer or locking him up long term?

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

He might be the best RT in football already and is only getting better...no way they let him leave

Matt (Houston)

Can we as a league fire Jerry Jones the GM? While I appreciate his bumbling personnel and coaching decisions from a comedy standpoint, the league is always better when the bully Cowboys are actually doing something.

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

Will see what I can do

Darryl (Oakland, CA)

Do you think Cam Newton can one day be a poor man's Colin Kaepernick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

Cam can be as good as any QB we have ever seen

JJ (Charlestown)

As a free agent, any chance Tony Gonzalez looks at New England. Gronk can't stay healthy and he's 99% guaranteed to go to the playoffs.

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

I wouldn't put it past BB, but don't need three stud TEs!

Jason (Tennessee)

Do the Titans improve on Defense next year. I still can't believe Jerry Gray kept his job??????????????

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

On O, I would love to see them add one stud OG/OC, but other than that, they should do all in on D-at every level-this offseason

John (Wisc)

If the packers were to add 1 free agent which one would be the best fit in Green Bay? I still would love to see Reggie Bush in their offense.

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

It isn't their style to spend $$$ on RBs, but I agree with that fit-although that is a slow track too. But they would def use him right. Would LOVE to see MJD there in a trade scenario. How about S Jackson?

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

AC/DC Ride On...great one

Mark (Cleveland)

Does Trent Richardson need a better passing game to aid his development?

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

That would help, but the key for T Rich is just staying healthy

Jess (Miami)

The Dolphins have $40M in cap space...as the GM, who do you give a blockbuster deal to in free agency?

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

HAS to be a WR first. Make Tannehill's life easy-that need to be this offseason's theme. Another CB wouldn't hurt or a pass rusher opposite Wake, but this needs to be a big time O offseason-get two big time weapons and a replacement for J Long...seems feasible-and they also have extra picks. Look out for MIA next year

Dave (Charlotte)

start listening to The Killers...don't be late to the party like you were with Green Day

Alvin (Dallas)

Will Colt McCoy get another opportunity to start or compete for a starting job?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

He is really a terrible fit in CLEV now with the new regime...but in the right system as a backup? Sure

Dan (Buffalo)

Who is Buffalo's starting QB on opening day?

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

He isn't on the roster...a rookie

Eric (San Jose)

Crabtree top 5 WR next year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

That is too lofty, but I feel ya...more like Top 10

Darryl (Oakland, CA)

Has the NFL ever seen a QB with the tools that Colin Kaepernick has? Probably the fastest QB in the 100M, strongest arm in the NFL and is about 6-5?

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

Pretty crazy...Cam is in that convo though-CK is faster

Ryan (Seattle)

Matt Flynn to the Jets in a trade?

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

Scroll up to what I said about Smith to Jets...same deal with Flynn

Jeff (Ny)

Who is the Jets starting QB on opening day?

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Bet it is a stop gap guy like Smith or Flynn...just Rex's style

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

Folks, I have to run! Great stuff as always...drop me a line on Twitter @WilliamsonNFL
