Good morning gang! We've got sixty minutes of fantasy chattage up ahead, so why don't we get right down to business. Second cup of coffee is in hand... Who pray tell is up first?
Would you consider keeping Kimbrell in a pts league over Adam jones or cespedes? It sounds crazy but he racked up pts last year and is only 24.
Not over Jones, but definitely over Cespedes. Normally, I don't look to keep SP over hitters, let alone closers. However when I look ahead to say 2015, there aren't any other names I truly have any faith will still be in a closer role that far hence.
AJ, in a points league how would you rank these Rangers: David Murphy, Nelson Cruz, and Lance Berkman?
I'd rank them Cruz first, Murphy second and Berkman bringing up the rear.
I play in a pitchers heavy points league and regular 5X5 league. They require different strategies. Which do you prefer a points league or a standard 5X5 league and why?
It is a matter of personal preference to be sure and there's no "right way" to play fantasy baseball. For me, I prefer the long marathon of a rotisserie league to that of a weekly points league. But you are absolutely correct that strategies need to be tailored to the format.
Will Kendry Morales regain his form?
It will be interesting to see how the move to Seattle works out for him and how the playing time will ultimately break down for all the new bodies on that roster. I can see a top-20 at his position but not too much higher.
Thoughts on Justin Upton in ATL and Martin Prado in ARZ?
Huge deal for the Braves. I mean, that outfield could end up having three top-10 guys. That's insane. Prado, I had as a top-10 3B candidate before the deal, and I don't see any reason to lower him any post-deal.
Dynasty league. I need a shortstop. Literally have NO ONE! Do I trade Zobrist (SS eligible) for Ellsbury? I've been offered that
I assume you mean you'll be trading away Ellsbury FOR Zobrist. In which case, it's hard to argue against grabbing a potential top-5 at a position of need for a player who may be only top-25 at his.
What round should i look to take wilin rosario or lucroy. Points league
Catcher is a position you can afford to wait a bit on, and there's no reason to rush the pick. You're targeting a pair of guys who are going to be ranked 10-12 at the position. In a one-catcher league, that means you can wait quite a bit. Certainly, not before the top names start to go off the board.
Last keeper spot of a 12 team h2h cat league. Take a shot on Profar or go with Moustakas? Already have Hanley at short and Lawrie at third.
I'd go with Moustakas. I know Profar has a ton of buzz, and rightly so, but certainly for 2013, he's not as good a pick, and ultimately the goal is to win today as well as tomorrow. With Moustakas, I think you can be better equipped to do just that.
How well do you think D'Arnaud will play in NYM? Have him in a dynasty league behind McCann.
Eventually, I think you're looking at a really strong catching option. But for 2013, do not expect much. I'd rather take a Salvador Perez, but certainly d'Arnaud is a blue chip stash.
I'm in a keeper league where I can keep 4 guys. It's a points league with pitchers being slightly more valuable than hitters. I'm keeping Felix Hernandez already, which 3 of these do I keep? Dickey, Gio, Edwin, Stanton
I'd let Edwin go.
When is the next dynasty draft article coming out?
Picks 21-30 are in progress as we speak and the article will be out early next week.
Hey I get to keep 4 in a 5/5 league. I know I'm keeping Kershaw, King Felix, and Trout. Who would you keep for the last spot. Kemp or Justin Upton
Given the trade, I'm going to keep Upton. It's pretty close, though.
What do you think of Gerrit Cole's future fantasy prospects? He's been floated in a trade to me and I'm trying to decide how much he's worth giving up in present day value. I would be able to keep him for roughly his first four years in the bigs. Thoughts?
Just picked him in that dynasty draft we're doing...No. 255 overall. I don't think he has a ton of present day value, but if his clock isn't starting until he gets the call, then he's one of the better arms to take a chance on.
I am the commissioner in a Dynasty 6x6 league with OBP. I did some statistical analysis and determined that OBP was trending to AVG way too much and basically becoming a redundant stat. My first option is to replace OBP with OPS, but one owner in my league thinks that it's just another power stat. What's your take on adding OPS to a 6x6 league?
I think you need to have a balance of counting categories and ratios. HR, Runs, RBIs and SB - all counting. BA is the only ratio in a 5X5. So adding OPS to me is fine, because it has a chance to move in both directions.
What do you think of will middlebrooks this year? Will he be a top 10 3rd baseman as that is not a deep position for AL only.
Not quite that high on Middlebrooks overall, but in an AL-only league, he can be top 10.
With the departure of Hanson and now Delgado, do you think the Braves are confident that Teheran will rebound from last year's struggles in the minors and live up to his top prospect pedigree?
Good question, Ed. I think Delgado was likely going to be the No. 5 starter this season pre-deal and certainly between Teheran and Beachy, the team is sending a message that they have confidence one or both will be able to contribute.
Who would you rather have in a dynasty league: Jose Reyes or Hanley?
Jose Reyes gets my vote.
Are you a believer in Lincecum turning in a solid season from start to finish?
The Owen Show continues... I think a lot of people have written Lincecum off far too quickly. Sure, pitchers can and do go south and never return, but his second-half numbers were far from awful last season. I expect a rebound.
You see any pitching prospects as "sure things" to be a true ace in the future? (other than me, of course)
There are no sure things, and even a Stephen Strasburg can get hurt and lose a season along the way. I do like Taijuan Walker and I'm intrigued by Tyler Skaggs.
Due to the purging of everyone making more $ then the hotdog guy in Miami can Giancarlo Stanton reproduce his numbers from last year?
I think you have to assume he takes a bit of a hit, either in RBI numbers or simply the fact that if he's the "only bat" in the lineup he'll see a lot of walks. But if LoMo can give him even a modicum of protection, then 40-100 is not too crazy to envision.
I have jupton would you trade him for either prince, kemp, tulo, or longoria? if so in what order? category h2h
Personally, I'd rather have Prince. But that's dependent on what my 1B option is if I don't make the deal.
J. Upton or Heyward?
Right now, I have Heyward No.9 and J-Up No. 10 in my keeper ranks at OF.
What's your feeling on Brantly at C in a dynasty league?
Non-keeper, he ranks about 35. Keeper-league, I move him up to 25.
Keeper question- Matt Holliday at pick 24 or Yadi Molina at pick 164?
Value tips the scales to Yadier.
Josh Hamilton or Cargo? Roto league
Both guys are injury risks, and adjusting to new situation concerns me a hair with Hamilton. I lean to CarGo here.
Do you see Kyle Seager getting much better than last year? Can he be a Top 15 3b or do you see him moving to 2b if Ackley stinks it up again? Is Franklin a factor at 2b?
I think the fences being moved in Seattle will have an impact, and I love Seager as a sleeper at 3B. Ackley should rebound as well, and could be top-10 at 2B if he can keep average up. Franklin not a factor this year.
With Walt Jocketty already saying Billy Hamilton will begin the season at AAA Louisville is he worth a draft day stash in regular H2H league or look for someone else as a prospect stash like Profar?
Certainly worth the stash. Not shocked by the news. Hamilton can play everyday at Triple-A, rather than get lost behind Choo and Ludwick. At first injury, he likely gets the call.
AJ, what's your thoughts on Chris Johnson in this deal? does he move up the rankings being in a stacked lineup and likely the starting 3B in ATL?
I think he moves down. Probably going to platoon with Francisco rather than man the position outright, at least at first.
How much do you think Upton leaving Arizona will hurt the value of a guy like Goldschmidt? I have him for $9 in a 13 team 5x5 roto keeper league with a $290 budget. Do you expect him to get pitched around a lot now that Upton is gone? He doesn't have a whole lot of protection left in that lineup, but then again, Upton wasn't exactly the greatest protection last year, anyway.
Yes, the rest of the lineup can impact a player's production. It would be foolish not to recognize that. But, just as I'm not going to lower Giancarlo because of his teammates all that much, I'm not selling on Goldschmidt here either. I've learned it's better to try and assess individual skills and rank accordingly, using factors like "supporting cast" only to break ties.
I finished 12th in a 16-team dynasty points league and have a huge OF need. Do you take a shot at Wil Myers or Oscar Taveras, even though they might be a year away, over available guys like Carlos Gomez, Aoki, Plouffe?
I don't think you can afford to stash guys for the future when you have needs today. Now, certainly, you can draft a Tavares and use him as a trade chip to get something better than Gomez-level - and that might end up being the best move. But a need is called a need for a reason.
Lester or Shields this year?
For me, it's James.
How much value would you put on Yoenis Cespedes at $6-10-13-16 over the next four years? Surefire keeper?
I have concerns with Cespedes and how durable he's going to be going forward, so I don't in any way say that he's a "surefire" keeper. However, at $6 for this next year, it's a pretty good deal. Not sure that he's a lock to be worth that $16 when it comes though, but as long as there's an escape clause, I'd keep him for now.
That's the hour... flew by! Thanks for all the questions. We'll be on Twitter (@ajmass) to answer any questions that you may still have... Until the next time, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
