Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:03 PM)

Greetings folks. Thanks for stopping by. Nice to see you.

Jon (NC)

I see a lot of commotion being made that its Ray Lewis' last game, why no love for Randy Moss? Its possibly his last game as well.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:04 PM)

Moss is hardly as important to these 49ers as Lewis remains to the Ravens.

Brandon (Tennessee)

PK, Do you believe the Titans will take an Offensive Lineman in the first round, or someone to help solidify there somewhat sloppy defense?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:05 PM)

They won't pre-proscribe what they'll do that way. It depends on who's there. They should take the guy they think is the best player.

lowly fan [via mobile]

Will Luck's sack #'s drop in the West Coast system?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:07 PM)

Yes, because he'll be throwing more quickly and shorter. So that's one good development. But they won't find as many big plays, and their big plays are more likely to include big runs after the catch. Hopefully Pep Hamilton will retain some of what worked so well for Bruce Arians, who pushes it downfield far more than a West Coast system does.

dm_schulte (South Dakota)

Excluding help from the draft give me 5 names the Colts should absolutely pursue this offeason

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:09 PM)

I don't have a list of potential free agents in front of me. So I'll mention just two. Paul Kruger may wind up overpriced because of a Super Bowl season. But he could be great on the Colts D-line and knows Chuck Pagano. Jairus Byrd is a guy any team with need at safety should chase if the Bills let him hit the market.

Lenny (Happy Town with the rabbits)

What is your opinion on Kevin Minter for the Texans? I hear talk that he might not work well with Cushing. Do you think, if the Texans could get an ILB who can play the pass and the run, they would keep him out there for a lot more snaps?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:11 PM)

I think a lot of Texans fans are overrating the second inside linebacker importance. The guy will play 33 to 50 percent of the snaps. I don't think you spend a big draft pick or big dollars on that guy. I know Cushing probably won't be himself at the start of 2013 and they need to bolster the inside, But they can do it with lower picks or cheaper free agents. I like Dobbins and Shapton, but they both tend to be hurt. And how about upgrading NT to help those guys behind him?

Patrick (Decatur)

If the colts make the right moves in the offseason. Even with a tougher schedule do you think they could have success close to this season?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:12 PM)

Absolutely. There is no reason they won't get better next year if they add the right people in free agency and the draft. Losing Arians hurt, but otherwise the gains should outweigh the losses.

Jordan E (Alaska)

With the recent news that the Jets are open to trading Darelle Revis what are the chances the Colts go after him? What do you think they (or any team) would need to offer in exchange for him?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:15 PM)

The Colts have a lot of position to address in the draft. If Revis was a free agent it'd be one thing. But they can't afford to deal away another pick or picks a year after trading their second for Vontae Davis. Also, Revis is coming off ACL reconstruction. Pondering Revis and the AFC South

Ryan (Perry FL)

At what position do you think the Jaguars are the worst at? In my opinion its the O-line, but I'de like to hear from a "professional".

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:16 PM)

I would be fine if they replaced 80 percent of the starting group on the O-line. Defensive line isn't very good either.

Jeremy (Florida)

PK, How many more years does Jones-Drew stay with the Jaguars?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:17 PM)

My guess would be one. Or zero.

Jason (Indy)

Which player do you see the Hamilton signing helping/hurting the most?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:18 PM)

Helps Coby Fleener a ton, I would imagine. Not going to hurt T.Y. Hilton, but he'll be asked for more catch and run and less run and catch, if you get my drift.

Mark (CA)

Think Colts will give Pat McAfee the franchise tag if they don't come to a deal?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:18 PM)

Possible.

Anthony (CO)

PK, Who do you think would be the best draft pick for the Jags? Starlite Lotulelei if hes available, Damontre Moore, or Jarvis Jones

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:19 PM)

Hard to say when we don't know the plan/ scheme Gus Bradley and Bob Babich plan to utilize.

Jeff (Cincy)

Biggest draft need for Colts is...

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:19 PM)

O-line, with corner second.

Mark (CA)

Hey Paul, do you see the Colts making a big splash in free agency with a big name or two?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:20 PM)

They aren't going to set out to chase names. They will set out to chase reasonably priced talent. If they happen to be names you know, great. They won't spend just to spend. But they will certainly add.

Lenny (Happy Town with the rabbits)

Favorite sport to play in spare time?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:20 PM)

I'm a soccer guy, but I've gotten old, fat and busy so it's been some time since I've played.

Tyler Jax [via mobile]

How do you feel about the GM and HC hires by Caldwell? It feels eerily similar to the hire of Del Rio. Do you see this direction as positive are we just caught in a never ending cycle of Same Sh*t Different Day?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:22 PM)

I don't think it's similar to Del Rio at all. Del Rio was kind of a surprise. I don't think anyone else was pursuing Del Rio. Everyone thought Bradley was a great candidate who was ready and on the fast track. And the Eagles loved him too.

David (Nashville)

Paul, I think the Titans would be wise to trade or release CJ and spend the money saved on secondary/DL or OL. My thinking is the gap between CJ and whoever his replacement would be is much smaller than the gap between our current secondary/OL/DL and those we can get in the draft/FA. Also, RB seems to be a deep position in the NFL. Secondary/OL/DL seem much thinner. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:23 PM)

No one is trading for a back who will cost them $10 million next season. You can find an effective back for a lot cheaper than that. They don't need to find money to pursue what they need. They'll have money. They need to find guys like they did back when they brought in Chris Hope, David Thornton and Kevin Mawae. Find a free agent class like that, draft well and they can improve a great deal.

Ryan (Purdue)

How close do you see the division being next year? Texans still running away or are the Colts in the shadows?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:25 PM)

The Texans weren't running away in 2012, they won the division by a game. They were supposed to run away and the Colts surprised us. It'll be no surprise for the Colts to be good in 2013.

Zoltan (Budapest)

What do you think about Bradlery and his coordinator picks? I like the HC and OC hire, but I read almost just negative stuff about Babich. Michael C Wright who covereing the Bears for ESPN Chicago for 3 years said he is not DC material.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:26 PM)

The DC is the less important hire, as Bradley is a defensive guy. I don't know either of them, eager to see. Keep in mind, I believe Mike Wright liked Mel Tucker. And Tucker is overrated.

Willow (Southside)

Will you be tweeting Jim Irsay with your Super Bowl Prediction? It could pay off handsomely.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:26 PM)

When he starts answering my tweets, I'll start playing his games.

Trevor (Tennessee)

I know Dave Ragone has been a QB coach before, but with the success he's had working with the Titans' receivers, what's the play there from your perspective?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:28 PM)

I think Mike Munchak was determined to move him, which I don't understand. I do understand moving him because Shawn Jefferson became available, and he's a good coach.

Fred (Gainesville, FL)

Is Eugene Monroe THAT good? Is he really so good that Luke Joekel is absolutely out of question at #2? The pass protection is just so bad but I know that the o-line is 5 guys and not just the LT.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:30 PM)

He's not THAT good. But with all the holes they have, they don't need to draft a guy at a spot where they have a more than capable starter. Unless they think Joekel is just too good to pass on.

Ben (Indianapolis)

Do you see the AFC South next year being a two team race with Houston and Indy duking it out for the division? Is there any quality OLinemen out there for the taking in free agency for the Colts?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:33 PM)

I never would have thought the Colts would have been a playoff team this year. So it's silly to pretend we know something for sure. And we haven't even seen what everyone will add to their rosters yet. There will definitely be O-linemen who are upgrades out there to be had.

Jack (San Diego)

Does a team with a QB who they are still up the air about think about the Draft class at QB and FA and factor that into their descision to retain or let go of their QB?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:34 PM)

Based on the draft class, no. Based on a draft pick, perhaps. You can't say, well we'll find a guy in this draft so let's cut our starter. Not if he's any good.

Willow (Southside)

If it is playoffs or bust for Munchuk, who would Bud look at for his next head coach? Still promote from within and/or go with a former Oiler player or does he have a broader search?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:34 PM)

He'd have a broader search. What sense would it make to promote from within when he'd be firing the coach who hired that coach?

Jack (San Diego)

What is or when will we know Loggains scheme/philosophy?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:36 PM)

It will be more like Mike Heimerdinger's offense was with simplified decision making for route-runners, more run game.

Jared (Pensacola, FL) [via mobile]

Pep Hamilton><=Bruce Arians?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:37 PM)

I love Arians and I loved that offense. Lose him and in the Colts context I don't think they could have found a better replacement than Hamilton. I won't like his offense as much, I suspect, but he's good at coaching it.

Willow (Southside)

AFC South went 6-10 against the NFC Central (NKA North) Which NFC division do they play next season and might an easier slate bode well for all?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:39 PM)

They play the NFC West (tough) and the AFC West (not as tough).

Jason (Murfreesboro)

If there was a offensive tackle at 10 the Titans liked, do you think Stewart could play guard?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:39 PM)

I don't think they'd go that direction unless they think Stewart is close to done. I'm not sure they'd try to play him at guard.

Gage (Indiana )

If Kenny Britt has a big year, is there any chance the Titans try to resign him?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:41 PM)

If Mike Munchak is still the coach, I highly doubt it. Paying him off of one big year would be catching him at peak value, and they won't/shouldn't pay peak value for a guy that's been so disappointing.

Mitch (NC)

Can TJ Yates be a starter?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:42 PM)

Probably. But he's not taking the job from Matt Schaub anytime soon.

Fred (Gainesville, FL)

What comes first. Tom Brady's fourth superbowl, Eli's third, or Andrew Luck's first.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:43 PM)

Good one. I'd guess they'd play out in the order you have them listed.

Dwight Freeney (Indy)

Where do you think I end up playing this coming year PK? We all know Indy isn't going to pay me.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:44 PM)

It's a really tough question. I think it'll be a 4-3 team that plays on turf, preferably indoors. I could try to narrow that list, but I'd be shortchanging other questions!

Jarod (Indiana)

With all the holes on the Colts roster and all the freedom of movement they have with cap money, which positions do you address with the draft and which with free agency, or is it too tough to call at this point?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:45 PM)

Tough to call. I'd shop the free agents I want aggressively, address the rest in the draft. I wouldn't pass on a guy I want in free agency saying, 'Oh we'll cover that in the draft.'

DJ Drummond (Houston)

Who is more responsible for Houston's four-loss-in-six-game slide, Kubiak or Schaub?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:46 PM)

Those shouldn't be the only choices. Pass defense was bad. Red zone offense was bad. Everyone had a piece of it. Kubiak didn't call great games, but he wasn't playing.

Fred (Gainesville, FL)

How easy is it for a OT to go from LT to RT? If the Jags got Joekel is it feasible for Monroe to start playing RT or is that not a realistic transition.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:47 PM)

LTs are typically more mobile with better feet, meaning they can deal with the speed of premier rushers. RTs tend to be bigger and more physical. I don't know that Monroe is necessarily a RT, though he'd be better than anyone they had there last year.

Ismael (Texas)

Do you see any coaching changes for the Texans? Kubiak? Dennison?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:50 PM)

They won 13 games! You want to fire a head coach who won 13 games?

Aaron (Indy)

Paul, do you have any idea why the colts let their former Special Teams Coordinator go? Seems odd considering he came with Pagano from Baltimore and he had a very successful year by Colts standards.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:53 PM)

I don't have any inside info, no. But it's hardly crazy that, no matter their previous relationship, things didn't go as Pagano envisioned and he decided to go a different direction.

dean (indiana)

do you think the colts will resign powers and freeny

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:54 PM)

Maybe Powers. Not Freeney.

Eric (Intracoastal West FL)

What are the chances of Brian Anger being an All-Pro next year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:56 PM)

Really? I'm going to predict how the league's punting pans out next year?

Louis (Jax)

Do you like people?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:56 PM)

Some a lot more than others.

Jared (Pensacola, FL) [via mobile]

Jimmy Raye><=Tom Telesco?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:56 PM)

Well, I think both the Chargers and Colts say Telesco.

Eric (Jacksonville, FL)

Is there genuine admiration outside this town for the Jags new GM and HC? That's what the local talking heads are saying. But I've heard that before with Smith and Mularkey so kinda skeptical this time. Do you think this tandem will be more successful than the last one?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:58 PM)

I do. The old guys were super low key. These guys are super high energy. Given a choice, I'll take energy. They've worked under good people. There are no guarantees. But I'd be optimistic.

Blair (Bama)

I know the Jags will be looking for a starting CB in the draft but do they resign both Cox and Mathis in the mean time? Ross is obviously a bust signing.....

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:58 PM)

Big cases for not signing them are obvious: Mathis is old and Cox is injury prone. Cox is really good when healthy. I'd pay him up to a certain level.

Fred (Gainesville, FL)

What can the Jags do about the Laurent Robinson signing. They overpaid way too much and he probably shouldn't play football again with those concussion issues?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:59 PM)

What can they do? Either he recovers and they get something out of him or he doesn't and they don't.

Nate (DC)

What do the Colts do with Freeman and Angerer next year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:00 PM)

Have a great camp competition and some quality depth.

Kei (Orlando)

Chances of Bryan Anger being an All-Pro...... seriously man, is that what our fanbase has been reduced to?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:00 PM)

Exactly.

Eric (Intracoastal West FL)

Can the Jags squeeze out atleast one more Probowl year from Babbin or is he already on the decline?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:00 PM)

On the decline, but the best pass rusher they have I'd say.

Stephen (Davidson County)

You are my favorite on Midday 180. Give "Moose" a shoutout today during the noon hour!

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:01 PM)

I appreciate the support. But I'm not a big shout out guy.

Jason (Murfreesboro)

Have you noticed that Andrew Luck's comp % is lower than Jack Locker's this year? I don't hear anyone questioning Luck's accuracy.

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:03 PM)

Yeah, because Luck was throwing the ball far further downfield than the Titans. In fact, father downfield than anyone. Much more difficult to complete those. And you're incorrect that he wasn't questioned. Late in the season his mechanics trailed off and he was missing people high. I asked him about it after the game at Houston and he said it was an issue.

Blair (Bama)

Who is the Jags starting QB next yr? Gabbert, Henne, Smith or Flynn or other? Not that there are many viable options out there.

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:04 PM)

Where is all this Smith talk coming from? They didn't hire Greg Roman, people realize, right? I'd guess Gabbert.

Dave Matthews (Somewhere)

Bruce is good... but any love for my band?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:06 PM)

Liked the early stuff. Seemed you found a way to hypnotize people after that and my interest faded as I didn't want to join the cult. Some of your best stuff is good.

Doug (MD)

Think the Colts resign Collie? It's a risk but he's good...

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:09 PM)

I wouldn't be party to enabling him to suffer another concussion, frankly. And I expect they'll move away from him.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Great chat today, Paul. Enjoyed it much!

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:10 PM)

Kind of you, thanks. Appreciate all of you coming by. Have a great day and a big weekend.

Eric (Intracoastal West FL)

Bring back Cox even if he's injury prone? Do they stick with overpaid Mincey or just cut the losses and let him walk?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:11 PM)

Why let him walk a year after you signed him when you have no replacement?
