With all the teams leaving and coming in, is it all good or bad for the big east as whole?
IS this a trick question?
In all seriousness, it is bad for the league's image and perception. I am not sure I see any good in all of this right this second, but maybe you guys can shine the positive light today.
Gracias, amiga AA! Do you think Strong's new contract and big pay raise will keep him around for more than the next couple of years? What says your crystal ball? :)
If I was a betting woman, I would bet on him being the head coach when Louisville enters the ACC in 2014. Between his salary and his buyout, there are only going to be a small handful of teams that would even consider approaching him. And who knows if they have job openings in the next few years.
Tell me how big of an impact T.J. Weist will have on the offense for Uconn? Will Deleone be hands off like fans hope? Last will Uconn have the players to pick up his style of play. Anything is better then the last two years.
Well, given that he comes from a more spread-type background, the hope is that he will have a big impact on the offense. The plan is for DeLeone to stick with the offensive line, something that must be done because, quite frankly, that group was among the bottom three in the Big East. As for the players, I think the big question is QB and what happens at that position. Lyle McCombs is a 1,000-yard back. I liked the flashes we saw out of Davis and Phillips at WR. Can UConn find a QB that does not turn the ball over and make silly mistakes? Big question there.
Hey Andrea! Thanks for the chat. Rumors are rumors but where there's smoke there's fire, right? C-USA just went to 14 members and some are saying that happened because Tulsa and Southern Miss are being invited to the Big East sooner than later. Maybe by 2014? What are you and the other insiders hearing?
Lots of speculation out there but nothing official to report at this time. Keep on checking back, though. News tends to happen over here on the BE blog.
How much better will uconn be on offense this coming year than last year?Do you see Geramy Davis or Shakim Philips having 1,000 yards receiving?
It is hard for me to see UConn being much worse, to be honest. I thought that was rock bottom. I would like to see if Casey Cochran gets a real shot at the QB job in spring ball.
Did you ever really see Boise St and San Diego St sticking in the Big East or always knew that eventually it would fall apart?
I thought there was a chance they would play for a year or two, but never saw it as a long-term solution.
Andrea,The big 12 is having thier conference meeting in the next few days. Expansion will likely be discussed. Do you think they come out those meetings and extend invitations? If so, does one go to cincy? UC and BYU seem to be be most likely targets (since the ACC buyout is still not determined).
I am not going to be in the meetings, so I have no idea. I am not trying to sound flip, but that is the truth. It honestly has been hard for me to get a read on what the Big 12 is going to do based on what seem to be contradictory comments coming from their officials over the last few months.
Andrea- You had a great 2012 season covering the Big East...Here any rumblings on who RU is looking at for the OC position? As Long as the Name doesn't rhyme with David Brock, I think we will all be happy..
Thank you, Aaron. I have not heard much on the RU search, but I think folks would like a fresh start, somebody to re-imagine the offense at Rutgers.
I hope RU can find a coach who could expand the playbook and be balanced without skewing to much to one scheme...The question I keep asking to fellow RU fans (which everyone seems to be mixed on the answer) is whether NOVA's regression was due to poor play calling and not putting him the best positions to succeed or that NOVA just isn't that good of a QB?
That is a question I wanted to ponder in a future blog post. Was it Nova or the coordinator? Do you folks have thoughts?
Hear anything about Tommy T keep the bearcats at Camp Higher Ground for training camp?
The answer is an emphatic absolutely!
In your opinion, is the "new" MWC stronger than the "new" BE?
By "new" MWC do you mean "old" MWC? Because the only thing that's new is Utah State and San Jose State. I am not going to take anything away from those two teams, which just had awesome years. But I think this is a good topic for a future blog post when I have more time to crunch the numbers and look at records, bowl appearances, BCS appearances, etc.
Given who everybody loses and who they bring back, which BE team do you think will have the best offense and best defense this season? I mean, of course, assuming there are no big losses in Spring or Fall Camps.
Best offense should be Louisville without question. Best defense is a much tougher question to answer, considering Rutgers and UConn lose large chunks off their units. Cincinnati also is losing some key players and has a coaching change, BUT Tommy T's group last year at TT was much improved. So ... that one I am not so sure about at this time. It could be Louisville, quite honestly, with all the players the Cards return.
What are your impressions of the staff Scott shafer has hired this far?
My first impressions are that he has a quality staff. I think it is good he hired coaches he has worked with before and has a comfort level with, and fit his style. Staff chemistry is really important. Now we will see if they can actually go out and recruit and continue on with what Marrone started.
Blog suggestion: After the 2012 top 25 is finished, list their incoming recruiting rankings. It would be interesting to see how many diamonds-in-the-rough like Matakevich there are, and also who got coached up.
Great one! I did a post last year looking at the Big East first team and their recruiting rankings, so I will put that on the list.
Andrea, I tend to think that the Big East will thrive as a result of having an enlarged presence in Florida and Texas. Football is king in the South and those footholds were what we needed for quite some time. However, the casual fan doesnt really keep up with recruiting and what the expanded geography would do for the quality of the league. What teams do you foresee helping the Big East thrive in the future?
It has to be the teams in Florida, for the reasons you just listed. That would be huge for the Big East. But you know what happens to teams that thrive in the Big East, don't you?
do you think the WR problem for the bearcats was the Qb? the OC? or the the WR corp?
I think it was a little of both. There definitely was inconsistency at receiver, no question about that. But there also was inconsistency at QB with Collaros getting hurt, then Munchie, then Kay taking over. The bottom line is that the running game was better the last two years, so Cincinnati went with its strength. Still, I think WR is an area in major need of improvement.
AA, what is going on with Maryland and the ACC? I seem to remember when WVU was looking to leave the BE we got all the info we want. Now we get crickets!
Just like WVU and the BE, they are both suing each other! Good times.
AA, are you surprised at some of the recruiting catches that S.Florida has gotten? seems like a school in a dead end conference would be struggling to nail recruits down, but it seems like S.Florida has kicked it up a notch!
Not surprised given who is in charge over there. Reason I gave USF an A-plus for its coaching hire of Willie Taggart.
I want to say NOVA isn't any good but look at his stats prior to the Kent State Game. They were great.. The Kent State Game was Definitely the turning point in where he regressed...It honestly seemed like Brock had a plan going into a game and didn't make the adjustments through out the game..The biggest waste this year is the fact they had three WR's who were 6'4 and above with speed being covered by corners that were barely 5'10 and they didn't expose those matchups
I cannot argue with any one of your points.
AA- do you honestly think as of right now that the cards can go undefeated? It's amazing how that school's programs handle expectations- what do you think a one or two loss season is a sign of? Do you thing lousiville can pull recruits enough to hold a undefeated title- maturity, coaching, skills. Don't get me wrong- I love my cards, but perfect season material they are not (of course now they will) and haven't been
Chris, Have you looked at Louisville's schedule?? They will be favored in every game next year and should go undefeated. They return 19 starters. Teddy B will be a junior. I am not sure what more you want for an undefeated season. Because it is not going to happen in the ACC in Year 1. I can all but guarantee that. Not in the Atlantic Division.
just asking cause kembrell Thompkins got invited to the combine without having a steller year....
I was a little surprised, but he has great measurables.
What are the chances that Louisville and Rutgers move on to their respective conferences before the 2013 season starts?
Zero. Big East already released 2013 home/away opponents including Louisville and Rutgers. So did the ACC, without Louisville.
All D's for USF in you grading scale - you were............ too kind .. this was the hardest season to watch - I hope Willie gets this turned around quickly - Hopefully Michigan St next year will not be the USF signature win, then fold again in conference - Hopefully history will not repeat itself for 3 years in a row
Well, Matt did the grading and I told him he was too kind. USF fans should be happy AA was not at the keyboard for that one.
When do the contracts for the non major bowls expire and do you think we will get 1 or 2 more bowl tie ins since the WAC no longer plays football?
Those expire after this 2013 season. I expect the BE will try to pick up a tie-in somewhere else, especially since the league has expanded beyond 8, perhaps to one of the Texas games.
if the consensus is that the new BE is the old C-USA, than the same can be said about the ACC being the old BE.
Many of us have made that contention.
AA, I know that this is about BE football, but how much of a class act is Tommy T for giving $300,000 back to the Cincinnati football program. I think that this makes a huge statement for the "class" that he has and that he will be around for a long while. Thoughts?
Didn't he give $$ back to the entire athletic department to help the other sports as well? I thought it was a great gesture on his part. More coaches should do that.
IF (and it is a big IF indeed) the Big 12 comes calling and filches some more teams I really can not see the Big East making it into the 2014 season--especially since there will no longer be any "AQ" status anymore. Any thoughts??
The Big East will be around. Where do you think the other 8 teams are going to play football?
thoughts on the staff Tommy T has put together?
Looks solid on paper. Loved the Eddie Gran hire. Should really help with recruiting, especially in Florida.
I apologize I meant to say back to the entire athletic department. TYPO. I need the ESPN proofreaders.
Well, sometimes I slip mistakes past the ESPN proofreaders, too! It happens.
Would the Big East not have seen all those defections and be a strong and thriving conference today had BYU joined last year? I think the Cougars could've saved the BE as we knew it and kept it a major conference.
Not sure, Max. Why would BYU have joined the current Big East lineup?
My Bobcats open at Louisville. No doubt that Louisville will be favored. Any chance we pull off a Penn State type upset again?
I am going to say the answer is pretty slim on that one. But it will be fun to see Tyler Tettleton play, I bet he will be able to make a few plays for his team.
Yes they already released their schedules, but this IS the second schedule the Big East has released.
Fair point. But it is not going to happen for 2013.
Hello Andrea! What's the over/under on the number of BE teams that finish in the Top 25 next year? I'm forecasting Louisville and UCF, although I think a 3rd team could be a possibility. And as a reference to a prior question, I don't think the MWC will have more than 1 team in the Top 25, so I would say that means the BE will remain superior to the MWC. Thoughts?
Well if you count Utah State and San Jose State, the MWC had 3 Top 25 teams this year so ... But anyway, not sure on UCF as a Top 25 team. Lots of losses off that defense. Louisville and Cincinnati would be my top 2 choices for right now.
To Patty: Clemson & FSU were never in the Big East, so I would say at least in their current state, the ACC is not "the old BE." Could well be once Pitt, Cuse, and UofL join... depending on how successful they are.
Well in their future state, it is hard to argue the point considering six of 14 teams will have started out as BE members.
Biggest problem with new bowl line up is that top the bottom the Big East will be better than MWC. Likely ending with 2-4 Top 25 teams per year. However, all it takes is Boise finishing higher than any BE school to bump them out of a BCS game. That's the real problem with the Boise defection.
Yup you are right. And in a striking turn, Boise now has the upper hand in "street cred" among the voters. That is not something anybody would have said about Boise five years ago.
How does UC stop others from poaching the area? i see that they've got 1 (jones) out of the 30 top recruits from the area....any ideas?
They have to make a concerted effort to own the area. I don't know what TT's recruiting philosophy is at this point. I know he didn't help anything with what happened with the Massillon QB but I don't know all the details there just yet.
Thoughts on the impact of Boise st and SDSU leaving having on OOC schedules next year? As a UC fan, we all know what TCU/WVU did to our schedule this year, I'm gonna be sick if we have to play two FCS school, especially since we will probably play down to their level.
You don't. Every team will play 8 league games as opposed to the 7 they are used to playing so they only have 4 noncon games now instead of 5. But yes, SOS will take a hit. Replacing those 20 wins with Memphis/SMU/Houston is going to hurt.
AA, thanks for the answer. I was looking back to last year when there was some chatter that BYU would join the Big East -- with Boise State and SDSU. If BYU had joined -- along with Boise and SDSU -- I think it would've solidified the BE as a power conference. You wouldn't be able to stop a conference with Boise State, Louisville, etc. Add BYU with its Heismans and national champions and it would've been one heck of a conference and would bury the MWC and competed with the ACC and Big 12. Thoughts?
Not sure that would have stopped Rutgers and Louisville from leaving, quite honestly. That is what ended up sending Boise State and San Diego State back to the MWC.
Did anyone else go through football withdrawal this past Saturday? Cuse-L'ville was fun, but its hard to take hoops seriously before March. And this weekend will be worse.
I do not really watch hoops so the withdrawal was even more painful.
Real talk: If the Big 12 expands, they won't be looking at the Big East. It's going to be FSU/Clemson/ACC Country that gets poached. My guess is that with Delany proving he's ready to enter the ACC, the Big 12 makes a move at FSU and Clemson at the very least in the next 6 months.
Unless the buyout remains $50 mill. Who is going to pony up $100 mill for FSU and Clemson?
% chance of USF ever getting into the ACC or Big 12
Who do I look like, Nostradamus?
If the Big 12 asks and gets permission to have a CCG with only 10 teams, do you think there's any chance the BE will follow their lead?
I honestly do not see why the BE would do that. Why would they wreck a chance to get an auto spot, now that it is no longer guaranteed? I am actually surprised the MWC agreed to one. Boise could get upset and the MWC lose its spot in one of those elite bowl games.
What is your impression of flood as a recruiter? I feel in year 2 of his regime and knowing the big 10 will be a reality in 2014 he should be pulling a stronger class
Tough for me to give a grade on that because I am not following recruiting as closely as our experts over at ESPN Recruiting Nation. I think they can better answer that one for you when they have one of their chats. They would be able to give you a more informed answer.
You guys are quiet today. If I have nothing else in the queue in the next 3 mins, I will end early.
That being said, eventually the Big East will benefit from a stronger conference top-to-bottom. For instance, if Cincy and Boise both run the table in 2015 and go 12-0, a stronger Big East could mean that Cincy has more victories over ranked teams giving them a leg up on the Broncos in computer and human rankings.
That will be one of the intriguing parts to see out of this whole selection committee process. How will they choose between an undefeated Boise State and undefeated Big East team, as an example???
Will Willie keep the USF tradition of going to the East coast for Training camp or stay in Tampa this year? He is quietly getting a nice coaching staff in place and seems to be landing alot of local talent(something Skip was unable to do). Thoughts and comments?
Good question, I will ask the folks over at USF. I am continually impressed by the job he has done so far. The recruiting class is already taking shape nicely. He said he would own the Tampa Bay area, and he has proven that so far. I also like the staff as well.
UCF fans are waiting with baited breath for the results of the NCAA sanctions/appeal hearing today. Do you think that what transpired with Miami and the NCAA yesterday could have an impact on what happens with UCF?
Not sure what the Miami case to do with UCF, unless some improprieties are uncovered in the UCF case.
Heard any scoop on when the UCF/USF game may be scheduled? 1st conference game? Thanksgiving weekend?
Nothing on that yet. League won't release the full schedule for another month or so.
Do you plan on running for political office in the next presidential electtion?
Hey, I am old enough to!
who will be the featured back for UC next year? Poteat?Green? the JC transfer? i dont see RDA4 as a featured back after showing how good he is as a change of place
I think you are right on RDA4. This will be a great position battle to watch. I have heard good things about Buckley and Green. This is one position that I Am not worried about at all, to be honest.
What do you see happening to the Pinstripe Bowl? BE vs. B1G, B1G vs. B12, or staying BE vs. B12?
I think the Big Ten wants to make a play for that game.
Has anyone ever noted that Tuna looks like Mike O'Malley??
HA!!!!!!!!!! I will pass it on!
Of the big coaching hires (tuberville and Taggart) Which is going to have a bigger impact come signing day (February 6th) and which team will have a better season next year? (Pending the Big East not exploding)
I think USF will have a better class, and Cincinnati the better season.
What do you think about over-recruiting? Seems a big trend these days and I don't like it.
Been a trend for years, and I do not like it, either.
Are you getting soft on us AA - You seem to be giving USF so love today
Scroll down to the part where I said I would have graded USF harsher than a "D."
When do you see the BE adding ECU as a Full member and Bringing on Tulsa and or UMass for Football? Do they need to do this now for TV contract negoatations or just wait and see( since neither program will likely be taken anywhere else)
Good questions. Not sure on either one. I think they are probably trying to figure out whether the new additions help/hurt with the TV negotiations. Or they could just be trying to get to 12 teams to add a conference championship game. Lots of speculation going on out there.
Who needs to step up more WR wise Mcclung or Moore
Question is there a way for the group of 5 to create another level of college football?
Why would they create another level? They would just margianalize themselves.
All right everybody that wraps up our chat for today. Thanks for the great questions, see you again next week!
