Who should start at running back next year? And should Joe Bergeron be moved to fullback?
It depends on how much of the spread will be used by the Longhorns. Even though both can catch the ball out of the backfield, I still think Gray is the more complete package, but it's by a margin of 51-49 over Brown. I don't think the spread offense will be a great move for Joe Bergeron. Texas should be multiple enough to get him touches. They just have to figure out how to not show their hand when he runs on the field.
Which recruit has biggest immediate impact next year? Which has biggest long-term impact -- in other words 3-4 years from now?
I'll take the easy way out and say that the biggest impact recruit will be Desmond Harrison. In a constant effort to get five great guys on the offensive line, throwing legit 6-foot-7, 315-pounds of athlete in the mix can only help this line play better. When the guys up front on both lines play better, the team plays better. It all starts up front.
Jackson Jeffcoat, more or less sacks than Okafor at the end of the season? Considering he's healthy.
I say more because as the play at the DT spot gets better, the guys on the outside will run into more one-on-one matchups that they can win. Couple that with the green QBs in the Big 12 in 2013, and Jeffcoat could have a big year.
Who is your favorite WR to take Goodwin's place? Which WR will lead the team in most yards and TDs? Also, does Case get jumped on the depth chart? If so, who will be behind Ash?
That's a lot. I assume it will be Jones or Sanders, even though I still would love to see John Harris hit the field in some capacity. Unless a dynamic recruit jumps on board (which ain't going to happen), then it will fill from inside. I really like the wide receiver group. Leading receiver will be Shipley in the spread, Davis if it stays more of the same. Have no idea at the QB, but I want to see Overstreet get a real look.
What happened to our ability to develop talent? Years of top recruiting classes with these results are very frustrating. Any insight?
It begins and ends with the attitude of the team and the program, and even Mack Brown admitted that it has been off for a couple of years. He says that it is heading in the right direction. After that it really is simple for me to type. You commit to excellence, you teach as hard as you can. Then you hold everyone accountable. Again, easy to type, but Texas has proven that it is hard to execute.
How will Ash's skills be better used in the spread offense as opposed to the Harsin offense?
Well, he likes to throw the ball. In the spread he will have more pre-snap reads. Also his reads will be easier. While his offensive line will be better, they don't have to be great. He can be accurate when he sets his feet, and if he can throw guys open instead of throwing to open receivers, he'll be better off.
What are your thoughts on Big 12 Expansion? What is your prediction?
My thought is that the Big 12 should be proactive. They don't need to be silly, because nobody is going to leave the Big 12. The issue is that the footprint of the conference is already big, but there are not a lot of options for the Big 12. I think the Big 12 looks for schools that might defect from the ACC like an FSU, Georgia Tech (even though I don't like this one) and Clemson IF they decide to look around.
Like most of us, I was very disappointed in the play of the DBs. With Vaccaro gone, which young player do you expect to step up? Also, do you see a break out year for Diggs?
I think I most want to see what Duke Thomas can do at corner if indeed Diggs moves to safety and leads the defense from the back. I like Diggs so much as a player, so that's an easy one for me -- yes, he will have a breakout year.
RE: Manti - Why do you think homosexuality is such an issue in sports? Why are players
Everyone is scared of what's different. Locker rooms are full of macho, head strong, homophobic guys -- even some with a false sense of manhood. Coaches would be scared to throw off the chemistry in the locker room if players are paying attention to that as opposed to playing the game. I have hard time thinking there are not gay men playing FBS and NFL football right now. Statistics would tell us that they are there. It is such a taboo that they keep it hidden.
Do the Horns have a shot at improving interior pass rush? I know injuries took their toll on the defense last year.
I think they can and they will. Whaley could have a great year. D. Jackson played great against Oregon State the Alamo Bowl. They don't have a replacement for Moore's size but they will be fine.
Have the 2 latest commitments changed your thoughts on where this team will finish next year? If so, why?
No. I always thought the offensive line would be better. Now they will be better than I thought. But this team's success on a season level will come down to the play at QB.
If Ash does not turn the corner and prove to be "The Guy" this year, what do you think our realistic options are? Overstreet? Brewer? McCoy? Swoopes?
We do not get to watch practice, but if for some reason he is not the guy (and I think he will be), Overstreet's talent alone would demand that he be part of that conversion.
Why was everyone so disappointed in UT's season? At the start of the year most people considered UT's upside a 10-win season. When they went out and performed as expected everyone got upset.
The record was not the issue. It was the performances against the best teams on the schedule. Oklahoma, Kansas State and TCU games were horrible. Kansas was by far the worst team in the Big 12, and Texas struggled there. After the Oklahoma game, the attitude was down because people didn't see this team beat anyone that most people thought were better teams. That is what builds teams.
Sean, you going to get that slice under control before the 4th Annual Chip Shot @FalconHead?
My golf game will be great by the time I get there. The slice is a different story. My flat stick will save the day.
Do you expect any more big name recruits for Texas from now to NSD for 2013?
It's hard to think they can pull a big name between now and then, but do you put anything past Mack Brown?
Any chance Diaz goes back to basics and does away with those crazy schemes?
I think he can and should go more simple with the linebacker group playing better this year.
Should the 2013 season motto be "Return of the Mack"?
Not if they want people to take them seriously. I like it, though.
I am a Husker fan who lives in Florida, but moving to Austin in a couple months. Will HornsNation be able to convert me to Hank Hill's favorite college football team?
Of course we will. Just keep hanging out. Listen to my radio show, too. We'll reel you in. It's a fun place to be.
Thanks for all of the great questions. Have a great weekend off before the Super Bowl. I'll be chatting next week from Radio Row at the Super Bowl.
