Chat with Dan Rafael

D$
  (12:05 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the weekly boxing chat. Friday Night Fights is back tonight with Dzinziruk-Vera, there's a ShoBox tonight with Andrade-Hernandez and then a Showtime card on Saturday topped by Matthysse-Dallas, so there's some action this weekend. Check out all of our coverage, peep the updated sked, rankings and blogs and let's get to it.

Joe B. (Pittsburgh)

Do you know if Donovan George's Feb. 1 fight on FNF will be televised?

D$
  (12:06 PM)

Right now, it is not supposed to be on the broadcast. The telecast is Molina-Spinks and Castillo-Smith. I suppose it is possible that could change, but right now, not slated for TV.

John (San Jose)

What's up, Dan! I saw an interview with Josesito Lopez saying he's on target for fighting sometime in April, what's the scoop? Some Amir Khan?

D$
  (12:08 PM)

I just wrote a story before this chat about Khan, which should be posted soon. Schaefer said if Khan fights in the US, Lopez could be his opponent (the date is April 20). But if Khan fights in England, which is also possible on that date, he won't be the opponent. So it will depend where Amir fights.

Ben (New York)

Is the Donaire fight on the april 26th going to happen?

D$
  (12:08 PM)

Up in the air right now. It won't be April 26. That's a Friday. But Donaire is supposed to fight in April, but I dont think it's out of the question that it could wind up in mid-March if Bradley decides not to fight. We'll see.

Yaka (Slovenia)

Anything on Keith Thurmans opponent?

D$
  (12:09 PM)

There is a deal agreed to with Jan Zaveck but it is not signed yet.

John (Tampa)

Who is Miguel Cotto going to fight next?

D$
  (12:09 PM)

Nothing in discussions. Cotto, from what Richard Schaefer told me yesterday, won't be back until the fall.

Jere (San Diego)

Hey Dan, what's the deal with the rumors floating around with Manny fighting in April? There's so many things being thrown out there. Truth or fiction?

D$
  (12:10 PM)

There were some talks about that but it is not extremely unlikely he will fight then.

Fabien (London )

Who would you like to see gg fight next?

D$
  (12:11 PM)

I assume you mean GGG -- Golovkin. Since there won't be a Sergio Martinez fight now and maybe not ever, I'd love to see him fight Geale if Geale beats Mundine next week. I also think a great HBO fight in NY back in the Theater would be against Matthew Macklin.

Rudy (Bell, CA)

Did De La Hoya actually offer Donaire 3mil to fight Mares?

D$
  (12:14 PM)

There's a difference between tweeting it and making a real offer through a reprentative. So Oscar can tweet all he wants but it means nothing without a contract being sent to the manager and promoter. Rule of thumb: When a promoter throws around numbers in the public arena, it's not a real negotiation. It's grandstanding.

Ahmet (Istanbul, Turkey)

Hey Dan what do you think about Selcuk Aydin? If he wins Saturday do you see him fighting for a title next?

D$
  (12:14 PM)

Aydin is a good fighter, lower level top 10-15 at welter. If he beats Soto Karass on the Showtime card on Saturday, fine, decent win, but let's not get carried away.

Steven (Chicago)

What voters on the panel voted for Rigondeaux for a top ten spot in the P4P rankings?

D$
  (12:15 PM)

I have no idea and wholly disagree. I dont have him in my personal top 20. He has almost no accomplishment as a pro.

Brooks (New Hampshire)

Hey Dan - Good to see the Paulie-Shane fight isn't happening. I know Paulie wasn't happy with the money but do you think all the negative comments from the fans had anything to do with him not going through with it? Paulie really seems to care what the fans think most of the time.

D$
  (12:16 PM)

I think that had something to do with it, but I also think money he is happy with trumps what the fans and media say. But the combo of a payday not to his liking plus massive abuse from the fans made him think there was no point to the fight.

Lee (Los Angeles, CA)

Are you surprised that Oscar and Golden Boy have gone silent now that Donaire and Arum have asked that the $3 million be put in writing?

D$
  (12:17 PM)

I dont know if they have gone silent or not. I just know Im not wasting my time with it because the fight isn't happening. Both sides can blather all they want but it's all a game right now to them (the promoters, not the fighters -- to them it's serious).

Roman (ATL)

What a performance by Mikey Garcia last week. Do you think the Gamboa fight is next for him? I'm assuming Donaire will not be an opponent at least for a while b/c of Robert.

D$
  (12:17 PM)

No way is Gamboa next.

Steve (Hartford)

Is Dawson v Pascal 2 official yet ?

D$
  (12:17 PM)

May 25.

Jorge (Fort Worth)

What do you think about a Rosado vs Chavez fight? Granted I do not know who is with which promoter, but sounds like a legit fight, definitely want to see more of Rosado.

D$
  (12:19 PM)

Nothing wrong with it but 99% no chance. Chavez will be suspended and then probably fight Martinez again in the fall. Rosado is probably going back to 154.

Steve (Hartford)

Thinking about getting tix to Garcia/Judah any word on how they are selling ?

D$
  (12:19 PM)

Not a clue.

Jose (Lennox, CA)

Do you think Donaire-Mares gets made or will we soon be seeing interviews with Arum and Schaeffer blasting each other that the other one is preventing the fight?

D$
  (12:19 PM)

They wont do business with each other. Forget about the fight. If it happens to somehow get made by a miracle, then we can rejoice. Until then, forget it.

Bobby (Philadelphia)

Whatever happened to Victor Ortiz?

D$
  (12:20 PM)

He's out until September most likely.

JBJ (Las Vegas)

What's sup Dan. Is there a possibility that Ward fights more than once this year?

D$
  (12:21 PM)

Outside shot, but I sort of doubt it.

Joe M (Dallas)

Personally I'd like to see GGG vs Chavez sometime next year. Two guys that would stand toe to toe and go to war.

D$
  (12:21 PM)

Top Rank will never make that fight. Coal will turn to diamonds first.

Freddie Porno King (Dominican Republic)

dan, any chance we get to see canelo vs. floyd in may?

D$
  (12:22 PM)

I tend to doubt it but you never know.

Paul (East Bay)

Any word on the Adamek-Pulev fight? Pulev looks like an interesting fighter. He seems to be improving with every fight.

D$
  (12:22 PM)

From what Main Events' Kathy Duva has told me, she is talking to the Pulev people about doing it. If they cant agree, the fight is a mandatory eliminator and would go to a purse bid.

Bill (Chicago)

So Dan, with the Super Bowl a week away, is it safe to say that this is "Floyd announces his opponent week"?

D$
  (12:23 PM)

I think the announcement might not come now until the week after the Super Bowl.

Ahmet (Istanbul, Turkey)

Dan i read your article about Malignaggi today. Who would you personally want to see TK Malignaggi fighting next?

D$
  (12:23 PM)

I'd like Berto or Maidana. Both quality fights.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

Any news on Bradley-Gamboa? Last I heard it was falling apart due to weight and money issues. On the weight issues I side with Bradley, he is the 147lb champ and anyone trying to CHALLENGE him should go up in weight not try to get the CHAMPION down in weight.

D$
  (12:25 PM)

The way you make fights is to make them and not stand on some bogus principle if you want the fight. Gamboa is a 130 pounder for one fight. He shouldnt be expected to go all the way to 147. Bradley coming down into the 143 range is no big deal for a guy who was a jr welter recently. So Bradley can say 147 or no fight and that means there will be no fight and he can sit longer and not earn money.

Steven (Chicago)

I like the panel for the P4P - it adds more to the discussion. It would be cool to see who voted for who though, like some of the other sports power rankings.

D$
  (12:25 PM)

I may put my own rankings in a blog so folks still now how I have the top 20.

Frank (PHX)

D$ whats your picks for tomorrows fights??

D$
  (12:26 PM)

I like Matthysse easily by knockout, Charlo easy over Yorgey and Aydin over Soto Karass.

D$
  (12:28 PM)

By the way, here is my feature on Matthysse as he heads into the fight with Dallas on Saturday night: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8879807/lucas-matthysse-counting-win-mike-dallas-jr

craig (houston)

Dan, you speak to both Arum and DLH...Who do you blame more for the unwillingness to work together? Maybe Lampley should get them both on his next show together and call them out on ruining boxing by having this feud continue...

D$
  (12:29 PM)

They are both to blame.

Ricky (Youngstown)

Dan, given the recent retirement of Kelly Pavlik (best wishes to him, by the way), my dad and I have been engaged in a recent debate. The "Boom Boom" Mancini era was a little before my time, but I know he was a very exciting action fighter who had been a titlist at 135. I've argued that since Mancini was never really the best fighter in his division (although he was a damn good one), that Kelly's career accomplishments (especially being the former Lineal champion at 160) and his overall body of work, put him ahead of "Boom Boom" on a theoretical all-time Youngstown P4P list. I know you've mentioned that Mancini was one of your favorites growing up, so I definitely wanted to get your opinion on this debate.

D$
  (12:31 PM)

Good question. I have to go with Pavlik. He was the real champion, beat Taylor twice, once by KO. Now Mancini had more higher profile fights overall and was more famous in his day, but in terms of overall accomplishment, I have to go with Pavlik. But Mancini was one of the guys I watched growing up and I really liked him and have had a chance to meet him several times in my boxing writing career. Great guy.

Bob (Chicago)

Dan, how much to attribute GGG's flu with his difficulty getting Rosado out of there earlier, or is that just the GGG we should expect going forward?

D$
  (12:32 PM)

I believe Golovkin was not at his best because of the illness. That said, he basically destroyed Rosado. Sliced him, beat the snot out of him, won ever second of the fight and got the TKO. So he didnt knock him down or put him out cold? So what. He won and I thought looked very good, especially considering the circumstances.

Tom (Atlanta, GA)

What the hell is wrong with Timothy Bradley? Where does he get off thinking he's a superstar?

D$
  (12:33 PM)

COME ON MAN HE BEAT MANNY PACQUIAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Hard Y (PDX)

How did you score Trinidad-DLH?

D$
  (12:34 PM)

Here's an opportunity to remind you all of my FAQ for just such an emergency. Read this: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8834349/dan-rafael-frequently-asked-chat-questions-part-2

Jeff (Gilbert AZ)

D$,Really enjoyed watching Curtis Stevens end his fight convincingly...what is next for him?

D$
  (12:34 PM)

Was a great KO. I would imagine he will be stay at middleweight and I'd expect to see him soon on another Fight Night card, even though I am not aware of any particular fight for him yet.

Keith H (Seattle)

Who do you like in the Royal Rumble and Punk vs. Rock? Thanks again for the weekly chats.

D$
  (12:34 PM)

I think Punk gets it done!

Duane Ford (Vegas)

What the hell is wrong with Tom in Atlanta?!?! TIM BRADLEY IS A SUPERSTAR AND SHOULD START GIVING SUPERSTAR CLINICS.

D$
  (12:35 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!!!!!!!!!!!!

Danny (Elmhurst)

What do you think of the Marco-Matthyssee rumors GB has been throwing around? Great fight, but are they really just protecting Garcia?

D$
  (12:36 PM)

Not rumors. Something Richard Schaefer has directly spoken about. I do not think they're protecting Garcia. They know the fight will happen eventually but I also know they want Matthysse (or Maidana if he won) to be a little bigger commercially first and I cant blame them for that.

Vic G (San Antonio, TX)

Is it just me or did Rosado look bigger than GGG?

D$
  (12:37 PM)

No, he was bigger than Golovkin. I was with them at a presser to announce the fight in December and noticed that when they stood with each other for photos.

Mike (Hillsboro, OR)

Dan, I sense a bit of cynicism in your responses concerning 'grandstanding promoters' etc... don't let the basturds get ya down.

D$
  (12:38 PM)

They dont, I just keep it real. I have little patience for such obvious BS. If you are going to BS me, making it believable at least.

Joydeep (Philippines)

Tim Bradley is kinda fed up with boxing especiailly after the negative backlash after the pacquiao fight. He just wants a couple more big paydays then retire early imo

D$
  (12:38 PM)

Wonderful.

Mike (Diamond Bar)

D Money, So let me get this straight. Shaefer puts Hopkins Cloud at Barclays but is scared to put Paulie vs Maidana because "it wont sell". Give me a break.

D$
  (12:39 PM)

Dont shoot the messenger.

Vic G (San Antonio, TX)

I saw WBA is saying Paulie has to fight Diego Chaves next. is that the fight Paulie fights next?

D$
  (12:39 PM)

I doubt it. I'm pretty sure they'll work it out. Chaves was said to be next and the mandatory at the WBA convention in December so nothing has really changed.

Miguel (Gurabo, P.R)

Why has Danny Garcia not been considered for Top 10 P4P??

D$
  (12:40 PM)

Why would he be? Make the case for who gets bumped out? I am a Danny fan. Great potential, good fighter, great kid. But his wins are twice over old Morales and a KO of Khan. That is not enough to be top 10 in my view.

Brooks (New Hampshire)

Dan - Should the top tier of light heavies be worried about Kovalev? He looked great last week.

D$
  (12:40 PM)

Agreed. I thin he can make serious noise at 175.

bk don (Brooklyn)

I read that Golden Boy has the Barclays arena booked for Puerto Rican Day Parade Weekend in June. Any idea who might headline that card?

D$
  (12:41 PM)

Schaefer has told me they will have June 8 at Barclays but has not talked about the fights yet. I would say this, and it's just a prediction, but if -- IF -- Jayson Velez beats Ponce De Leon for the featherweight belt on March 2 I would expect he would defend on any card on Puerto Rican Day parade weekend.

Darin (Silver Spring, MD)

GGG vs Ward would be an EPIC fight! Thoughts?? Could it happen??

D$
  (12:42 PM)

I think it could but it's a ways off.

Frank (Miami)

You think Shane Mosley could be on the Mayweather card?

D$
  (12:42 PM)

No.

Quinn (Columbus)

Do you agree with Teddy Atlas that the sport is in desperate need of a national commission? How would that effect international title holders? I mean we have a ton of foreign players in basketball, hockey, and baseball, but they all play here. Would Europe have to have its own commission as well?

D$
  (12:43 PM)

When you say "national commission" do you mean overseen by the federal goverment? If so, no, I do not support that.

Rick (San Diego)

Dan, I'm drawing a bit of a blank on this, but now that Mayweather-Pacquiao is down the drain, what is the biggest, most historically significant fight that could be made with current fighters?

D$
  (12:43 PM)

Good question. I dont know.

Daniel (Ithaca NY)

How serious are Arum's comments about Pac vs JMM IV not being held in the U.S.. Assuming that the fight will be made?

D$
  (12:44 PM)

Bob says a lot of things. Who the hell knows.

Mario (Houston, TX)

We need a face-off for Arum-Schaeffer. Thatd be great TV.

D$
  (12:44 PM)

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

r. verino (dc)

i know he is on the downside, but is celestino caballero a HOF boxer? one of the better little men there have been.

D$
  (12:45 PM)

A laughable notion.

Vic G (San Antonio, TX)

How impressed were w Mikey Garcia? He put on a clinic imo, even my girl said thats the most complete performance shes seen.

D$
  (12:46 PM)

I have watched Mikey for his entire career and thought was by far his best performance.

Dave (Los Angeles)

Hey Dan! Love your chat and columns! I feel like one of the reasons that Nonito Donaire was hailed as fighter of the year was because he fought 4 great fights in one year. It seems like it was the norm to see top fighters fight this often, and it was good for the sport. Do you think this kind of schedule could become the norm again for elite fighters?

D$
  (12:48 PM)

Donaire's activity level against quality opponents was a major factor for him being my fight of the year (and I assume he will win BWAA fighter of the year when the balloting results are announced soon). But I do not think it will be the norm. Remember, he only got the 4th fight because Bradley bailed on the date. By the way -- I got the new issue of Ring mag in the mail yesterday and it has their award winners - I could not more strongly disagree with the selection of Marquez as fighter of the year over Donaire.

Kieran (Washington DC)

Dan - can you explain to me how Peterson can get a license in DC?

D$
  (12:48 PM)

Probably by filling out the paperwork and paying the small fee.

mike (fresno ca) [via mobile]

arum and schaeffer face off would be epic!!!! Arum would say all his fighters are true champeens and schaeffer would call him a liar and talk about failed negations and arum flip him off I could see it now lol

D$
  (12:49 PM)

Epic.

Sean (Villa Park)

Lucas Matthysssee seems to think he should still be undefeated. How did you score his two losses? I thought Judah could have gone either way, but I thought he defeated Alexander.

D$
  (12:49 PM)

I was at the Judah fight and watched the Alexander fight on TV. I thought Matthysse legitimately lost both fights very closely.

the duder (PDX, OR)

Dan, since you no longer believe in RING rankings, are ESPN's rankings the most legitimate around?

D$
  (12:50 PM)

I always believed in my rankings more than any others. Just my opinion.

Roman (ATL)

I just want to make sure someone did not drop LSD in my Coke Zero. Did someone just suggst Caballero is a HOF???

D$
  (12:50 PM)

Yes. I think THAT person had the LSD in the Coke Zero.

Mike (DC)

We're 2 weeks away, the Freaks want to know....Will the Watson Brothers be walking out with Quillin or Guerrero on 2/9?

D$
  (12:51 PM)

STAY TUNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kevin (Boston)

I understand promoters are always full of crap, but reading quotes from Schaeffer talking about how Mosley-Paulie would have made an interesting fight really made me cringe more than usual.

Matt (Washington, DC)

Dan - I'm planning on attending the Peterson Holt FNF at the DC Armory on February 22. Do you know of any other fights on the card?

D$
  (12:52 PM)

The card is not set but Anthony Peterson probably will be on it.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

Just heard Andre Dirrell is back on a Telefutura undercard on Feb. 2.

D$
  (12:52 PM)

He is but not on the televised card.

Vic G (San Antonio, TX)

Do you and Doug Fisher ever get into good debates over eachothers rankings?

D$
  (12:52 PM)

Not really. Dougie's a good dude and knows his stuff. Much respect but we dont really debate rankings when we see each other.

Mike (Massapequa )

Very intersesting FNF tonight who do you like in the main event?

D$
  (12:53 PM)

If Dzinziruk has anything left, he should outbox Vera.

Mike (Hillsboro, OR)

Dan, "Arum vs Schaeffer " with the winner taking on Larry Merchant for the CHAMPEENSHIP"...I

D$
  (12:53 PM)

Epic.

the duder (PDX, OR)

Dan, are you currently in your prime?

D$
  (12:53 PM)

LOL. I'd like to think so.

Frank (PHX)

Dan, I was surprised to see last weekend after the Garcia/Salido fight there was a new 2 days with Adrien Broner, any other new ones coming up?

D$
  (12:54 PM)

That wasnt new. It was a replay of one they had already done.

Jesse (Downey)

Any news on whats next for Leo Santa Cruz?

D$
  (12:55 PM)

I discussed him with Schaefer yesterday. He fought 5 times in 2012 and was pretty tired after the CBS fight. He is taking a little time off and Schaefer said he'd probably be back sometime in May.

TC (DC)

I know they have warring promoters, but would love to see Brandon Rios v. Lucas Matthysse at 140!

D$
  (12:55 PM)

So wouldnt we all.

Shaun (St. Louis)

Dan - How far back did the loss to Bradley set back Devon Alexander and do you see him rising to the top of the welterweight division in the future?

D$
  (12:56 PM)

Not far at all. He came back, beat guys like Maidana and Bailey and now has a title and is set to defend it vs. Kell Brook next month. He's fought more since the loss than Bradley has since the win.

Bobby (Brentwood)

Sergio Martinez has been crying for awhile that no one would fight him,so why wouldn't he fight GGG?

D$
  (12:57 PM)

That is promoter Lou DiBella, who cried forever that Chvez was ducking Martinez when Arum said Martinez brought no money to the table and couldnt sell tickets. And now it is DiBella saying the same thing about Golovkin, who wants the fight with Martinez. Cant have it both ways.

Matt (Miami)

Dan after yet another bum whats a likely next fight for Deontay Wilder?

D$
  (12:58 PM)

Another bum obviously.

Tom (Sacramento)

With Guererro vs Mayweather talks possibly being a "rumor" I'd like to see Floyd fight Trout. Floyd always fights fighters when they are at thier peak.

D$
  (1:00 PM)

That is not happening. Mayweather-Guerrero is the likely fight regardless of what Floyd is tweeting.

Notorious JTB (Chicago)

Can Kimbo Slice become a heavyweight contender?

D$
  (1:00 PM)

You have a better chance of winning the powerball this weekend.

Dex (San Diego )

Danti KO:Has anyone mentioned Joel Julio yet?

D$
  (1:02 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. (Great nickname, by the way.)

Mario (Houston, TX)

Do you think Murray will be competitive against Sergio Martinez?

D$
  (1:03 PM)

I do.

Steve (Hartford)

Dan that was a new 2 days on Broner , it was his second one.

D$
  (1:03 PM)

ok.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Any idea if a Floyd-Ghost fight would be at 147 or 154?

D$
  (1:03 PM)

If it happens, 147 almost certainly.

mike (ohio)

Dan, any word on how the ratings were for the last NBC Fight Night card? I'd like to hope that ratings are strong and NBC stays commited. Also, any word on an opponent for Bryant Jennings next fight?

D$
  (1:05 PM)

No word on Jennings' next fight. He was mentioned as possible for Klitschko in April, but since then I am told that is not happening. As for the NBC ratings, read this: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/2782/boxing-on-nbc-a-hit

Oscar De La Hoya (Cali)

CHOWWWWWWWWW im sending the contract as I type CHOWWWWWWWW

D$
  (1:05 PM)

LOL.

Equipage (Des Moines)

Give me one good reason anyone should give a crap about a sewer sport like boxing when they couldn't even make Pacquiao-Mayweather? A slap in the face to fans. What a joke. You writers are wasting your time with this crap.

D$
  (1:05 PM)

Why are you here? Dont let the door hit you on the way out.

Chris (NYC)

What is the development purpose of having Wilder beat up bums... Seth Mitchell did the same thing and the first two quality opponants he faced exposed his glass chin... isn't it worth giving Wilder a chance to learn to take a punch or two?

D$
  (1:06 PM)

You dont "learn" how to take a punch. You either can or cant. It's not something that is learned.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

Does Gary Russell Jr. ever aspire to be great?

D$
  (1:06 PM)

Based on his pathetic schedule, obviously not.

ram (elizabeth, nj)

are we gonna have a super bowl bbq? cause i have imported meat from mexico

D$
  (1:07 PM)

With extra clenbuterol??????????????

David (PWAY NJ)

TIME TO BAN Equipage (Des Moines)....loser......

Vic G (San Antonio, TX)

Ban Equipage Dan!

Equipage (Des Moines)

No, Dan. If the fans are going to shell out hundreds of dollars a year to watch two half-naked men duke it out, the least we deserve is the one superfight that matters. You and your sport are a sinking ship.

D$
  (1:08 PM)

You're a moron and banned.

hector (chicago)

D$... although it maybe just your opinion... i do want to hear it cuz i respect it.... can you explain what is bradley rational relating to his boxing career

D$
  (1:09 PM)

Just thinks he is way bigger and popular and deserving of bigger paydays than the reality. He lives in fantasyland, which is his right. And it's also our right to keep it real.

Bob Arum (Las Vegas)

My Face-Off with Schaeffer needs more time to marinate. And if HBO doesn't like it I'll just take it to Macau.

D$
  (1:10 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!!!!!!

Dr. Rockso (Zazzblammymatazz)

Dan,There has been a lot of criticism on these forums regarding Mikey Garcia's heart last weekend. Is it just me, or is that absolutely ridiculous? I don't understand why some fans think he should have "toughed it out" after a dominated Salido got reckless with his head.

D$
  (1:11 PM)

Ridiculous. Kid didnt quit. Doctor told ref to stop it. Nose was BADY broken. I saw him up close the next morning and his nose was freakin' sideways. He had won every round (MAYBE 1 to Salido) and scored 4 legit knockdowns. It is what it is -- a lopsided technical decision win for Garcia in a superb performance. Did I love the end? No, but that is how it goes sometimes. It was a legit stoppage at that point to send it to the cards.

Silva (San Diego)

I just wanna dance!

D$
  (1:12 PM)

Your wish is my command.

Dieter (From Sprockets)

Dan, after being denied by you the last two chats, there will be no stopping me this week. So NOW is the time in the chat when we DANCE!!!!!!!!!

D$
  (1:12 PM)

And there ya go.

Dan (PHX)

Any update on who Angulo might face next? Him vs Rosado would be a good fight

D$
  (1:12 PM)

I believe Angulo might be Canelo's opponent on May 4 if he is on Floyd's card.

steve (staten island)

Any truth to the rumors of 50 cent possibly adding more fighters soon? Any guess who?

D$
  (1:12 PM)

50 said that in a media call yesterday but did not mention names.

Freddie Porno King (Dominican Republic)

salido was losing but he deserves to go out on his shield

D$
  (1:13 PM)

Then he should have kept his big ole head out of the way.

Brian (NJ)

While we all knew Bradley was delusional before, Bob has to take some of the blame for boosting the delusion further by overpaying him for the Pacquiao fight right off the bat.

D$
  (1:13 PM)

He didnt get overpaid for the Pacquiao fight. He got the going rate for a Pacquiao opponent.

jt$ (DC)

Why do you post boxing haters?

D$
  (1:14 PM)

To show how stupid they look for coming to a BOXING chat.

Vic G (San Antonio, TX)

which 50 albums u own Dan? n what is ur favoirte track?

D$
  (1:15 PM)

Honestly, I dont know a single 50 song that I am aware of.

Max (Spokane)

Is Equipage just upset that they are HALF naked?

D$
  (1:15 PM)

LOL.

Chris (NYC)

GGG claims he's willing to go to 154 or 168. Which do you see as more likely?

D$
  (1:16 PM)

Both. Wherever the biggest fight for him is.

Mike (Evanston, IL)

Week after week people as if someone is HOF worthy, your reply. No, but you back Arturo Gatti as being worthy, along with the other writers who elected him. I loved watching him fight, but HOF worthy I think not....name me a HOF fighter he beat or future potential HOF fighter. R.I.P. Gotti

D$
  (1:17 PM)

I haved written extensively on my reasons for voting for him and am not going to re-litigate it here. If you dont agree fine. I have voted for the HOF for something like 11 or 12 years and I voted for him and have explained why. Period.

mike (fresno ca) [via mobile]

Equipage did your parents let you use the computer or are they not home or did you just got back to the basement? Either way go somewhere with your stupidity Dan can u ban the man please

Alex (New York)

Dan, isn't it a manager or a promoter's job to help guide their clients careers? Part of that would be trying to give them a realistic sense of (a) what they are worth and (b) what makes the most sense for their long term development. By that measure, Arum and Dunkin have failed miserably in helping Bradley with his career.

D$
  (1:19 PM)

You can lead a horse to water but you cant make it drink. They have tried and have offered all kinds of crazy money. If he doesnt want to fight, so be it.

Jesse (El Mirage, AZ)

Some Mexican sporting newspaper has an article today with supposed quotes from Canelo that he is agreeing to fight Trout on the U/C of Floyds 5/4 card pending the agreement of Floyd fighting him in September. You have any info on this, or is this false info?

D$
  (1:20 PM)

I have said all along that IF Canelo fights on Floyd's card -- against whomever - that the only way he would do it is if he had a signed contract to fight Mayweather in the fall. Soi let's see what happens.

Dale (Atlanta)

Do you think Adrien Broner vs Gamboa will happen soon? I personally think Gamboa isn't ready to take on Broner yet and needs to wait a while.

D$
  (1:20 PM)

I dont think it will happen.

Kevin (Boston)

Name me a Hall of Fame fighter that Mike Tyson beat, other than an old Larry Holmes? And he's a no brainer. (I know Gatti didn't dominate like Tyson did but still)

D$
  (1:22 PM)

Rule of thumb: When you are the most famous fighter in the world, the undisputed champion and make nine overall heavyweight title defenses and become the youngest heavyweight champion ever you are an automatic Hall of Famer.

Jesse (El Mirage, AZ)

Dan the 2.3m that was offered to Bradley for that December fight that never came to fruition. That number is huge, when is the last time a fighter was offered that much for a non ppv fight on HBO?

D$
  (1:23 PM)

Lots of times.

Notorious JTB (Chicago)

Bradley also turned down a 50/50 split w/ Khan, so he's been prone to questionable decisions before.

José Alvarez (Puerto Rico)

Hopkins vs. Cloud. Although I don't have much interest in it, I think that Hopkins takes Cloud to school, much like he did with Pavlik. What do you think?

D$
  (1:24 PM)

At his age I dont think BHop takes anyone to shcool anymore. But I do think it's a winnable fight for BHop.

Alexandre (Montreal)

Dan, could it be that the only reason HBO is buying Pascal - Dawson 2 is because, hoping Pascal wins, HBO wants a legit and recognizable opponent at 175 when Andre Ward, one of their flagship fighters, moves up in weight ? That's the only explanation I can find ...

D$
  (1:25 PM)

I have no idea why HBO is buying that fight again for big money.

Drew (Dallas)

Are you sold on Demetrius Andrade as a prospect? Do you think he wins easily vs Hernandez tonight?

D$
  (1:26 PM)

Andrade has a lot of talent and was a great amateur. As a pro, he has won but has not looked great or compelling to watch. That said, I think he totally schools Hernandez.

Ethan iceberg (Montreal)

Can jason litzau be a top-level fighter again? Tough loss against broner, but shouldn't be the end of him.

D$
  (1:27 PM)

Again? I musta missed the first he was a "top-level" fighter. And it wasnt a "tough loss to Broner." It was a total destruction.

D$
  (1:27 PM)

Again? I musta missed the first he was a "top-level" fighter. And it wasnt a "tough loss to Broner." It was a total destruction.

D$
  (1:28 PM)

On this day 10 years ago, Ricardo Mayorga upset Vernon Forrest by third-round knockout to unify welterweight titles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcGfWWJR3mE

John (Tempe)

Dan, I'm drawing a bit of a blank on this, but now that Mayweather-Pacquiao is down the drain, what is the biggest, most historically significant fight that could be made with current fighters?Vitali - Wlad, obviously.

D$
  (1:29 PM)

That fight cant be made.

Gravy Eating Champion (Ogden, Utah)

On this day 10 years ago it was the first time I ever saw a fighter have a beer in the ring after winning! Mayorga was crazy!

Corey (westwick)

Was kind of shocked to see the ring magpick Marquez as fighter of the year hey the ko of Manny Pacquiao was huge but Donaire fought twice as many times he should have won it and if not him Danny Garica

D$
  (1:31 PM)

Here's my new blog with an update on Amir Khan: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/3006/amir-khan-set-to-return-april-20

David (Worcester, MA)

Dan has Hopkins ever been knocked down? I don't think he's been KO'd but has he ever been legitimately dropped?

D$
  (1:33 PM)

He was dropped twice by Segundo Mercado in their first fight (a draw that Hopkins was robbed in) and he was dropped twice by Pascal in their first fight, another draw that most believed Hopkins won.

Brian (NJ)

In response to Joydeep's comment, I believe most of us Fight Freaks are hoping Bradley just retires. He was way overpaid for the Pacquiao fight and is probably only one of 2-3 people who actually believe he won that fight. The 2-3 number may be a little generous though lol.

Matt (los angeles, ca)

What did the club fighters of the world do to deserve endless Deontay Wilder beat-downs? Can we ever see him in a real fight?

Vic G (San Antonio, TX)

Pascal scored a bogus knock down on bhop

D$
  (1:34 PM)

As I recall, one was bogus and one was legit.

Peter (Ithaca)

Do you think Screech from Saved by the Bell is a future HOFer?

D$
  (1:34 PM)

No, but I think you are a present day idiot.

Walter E. Kurtz (Phoenix, AZ)

Does Wladimir Klitschko have an opponent lined up for this spring?

D$
  (1:35 PM)

Not yet but April 6 is his likely date.

Demetrius Andrade (The Corner)

Tell me I'm the Best Dan!!!

D$
  (1:35 PM)

LOL.

bill (carmel, ny)

really looking forward to froch/kessler. any updates on US coverage and will you be traveling to see the fight? hopefully thy can put kessler in a plastic bubble really soon.

D$
  (1:35 PM)

No network set yet but that fight will have US TV.

Joydeep (Philippines)

Where does pavlik vs williams rank as one of the greatest fights that was never made?

D$
  (1:38 PM)

It was disappointing that it never happened, but there are others that were more disappointing. For example, I was more ticked off we never saw Pavlik-Abraham than Pavlik-Williams.

Mike (CALI)

Dan, how long have you been doing the chat? i came on board I think 6 months ago.

D$
  (1:39 PM)

Since 2000 at USA TODAY. You're late.

Mike R (Dallas)

Is Froch-Kessler II a done deal?

D$
  (1:39 PM)

Yes.

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

Do you think other boxing writers provoke Arum and Schaefer into ripping each other? It seems they don't do it as much in your articles as in other places. Could that be part of the problem?

D$
  (1:40 PM)

It is. A lot of times they rip each other without provication and I just dont write it. It bores me, often does not advance a story and it is nothing more than nonsense. Others like to write that stuff over and over.

terry (hamburgersville)

ahhhhhhhhhhh the go-LOV-kin child!!!!!!!!

D$
  (1:41 PM)

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vic G (San Antonio, TX)

I used to buy USA today on fridays for ur weekend reports etc

D$
  (1:41 PM)

"Used to"

Kevin (Boston)

Here's to hoping Pavlik can keep his life together in retirement

D$
  (1:41 PM)

Agreed.

Gravy Eating Champion (Ogden, Utah)

Have you ever gone to Asia to cover a fight?

D$
  (1:41 PM)

No. I've covered fights in 5 countries: USA, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Canada and England.

Chris (Los Angeles, CA)

You know Golden Boy wasn't serious with the offer because there was no suitcase w/$3 million in cash.

D$
  (1:42 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!!!!!!

Aaron aka ALAZ (Fort Lauderdale, FL)

Have you ever crapped your pants during a fight because you had to go so bad?

D$
  (1:44 PM)

These are my readers.

SYNICK (GLENDALE)

DTM, How did you score the Burgos vs Martinez fight?

D$
  (1:45 PM)

116-112 for Burgos.

Vic G (San Antonio, TX)

Dan, Is Amir Khan fighting Senchecko next?

D$
  (1:45 PM)

Read this for an update on Khan: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/3006/amir-khan-set-to-return-april-20

El (Kansas City)

Golden Boy told Top Rank to get the $3 Million from Lennay Kekua

D$
  (1:48 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Joe (NJ)

Pavlik wasted his career over poor decisions yet he doesn't get criticized by you. Why does Bradley get bashed an not Pavlik?

D$
  (1:49 PM)

Pavlik fought the fights. Other than decisions in his personal life, not related to boxing, what bad decisions did he make other than pulling out of the ShoBox on short notice?

Sam (Indy)

Dan, have you gone out drinking with boxers after a fight

D$
  (1:49 PM)

Have I been out with fighters after fights? Sure, from time to time that happens.

Bruce (Alexandria, VA)

Reader Aaron aka ALAZ might want to google Andrew Six Heads Lewis who had to quit a fight he was winning (according to Wikipedia) "due to an extreme need to defecate blamed on consumption of a pre-fight milkshake."

William (New Haven)

Maidana/Matthysee any chance that fight gets made this year? That would be a war while it lasted!!

D$
  (1:51 PM)

Schaefer wants to do it. Quotes are here: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8879807/lucas-matthysse-counting-win-mike-dallas-jr

Steve (Hartford)

Has there ever been a fight card in the city of the Super Bowl the day before the game to try to capitalize on all the people in town ?

D$
  (1:54 PM)

Yes, Forrest-Mayorga 1 was in Temecula, Calif., outside of San Diego on the weekend the Super Bowl was in San Diego.

the duder (PDX, OR)

You know you're a freak when you're googling Andrew Six Heads Lewis.

D$
  (1:54 PM)

So true. He made some good fights.

Anthony (PA)

Dan, are there any former boxers left that you've always wanted to meet that you haven't yet?

D$
  (1:55 PM)

As far as fighters who are still alive, no.

terry (hamburgersville)

That was a premature stoppage in the Forrest Mayorga fight...he was up

D$
  (1:56 PM)

And out on his feet and had been knocked around before the knockdown. And Vernon did not complain one iota after the stoppage. Perfectly legit stoppage.

james (WA)

Is paulie the new valedictorian of the winky school of business? seemed like winnable fight for him, and some good money.

D$
  (1:59 PM)

Totally disagree. He will still fight and make good money.

Peter (NYC)

Help settle a current debate in the office. Riddick Bowe of Early 90s vs Either Klitschko

D$
  (2:00 PM)

Would be a fight. Bowe at his best would be a tough out for anyone. He had great power, agility and could take a great punch. He also had fast hands for a big dude. The Bowe who won the title from Holyfield was tremendous. But he could not sustain that.

Vic G (San Antonio, TX)

How did u score the 2nd Forrest v Mayorga fight?

D$
  (2:01 PM)

I was at the fight and had Mayorga winning close but I do not recall my exact score.

Matt (Pittsburgh)

Dan, thoughts on Dibella's comments about GGG not deserving a Martinez fight? I have nothing but respect for Martinez, but he isn't exactly a huge ticket seller in his own right.

D$
  (2:01 PM)

DiBella is a hypocrite with that jive talk.

John (Indiana)

Do you believe Pavlik will stay retired?

D$
  (2:02 PM)

I would not be surprised at all to see him return at some point. And even he admitted it was possible down the road.

Kev (Brooklyn)

you may have mentioned this on a previous chat, but what is your prediction for Judah-Garcia?

D$
  (2:02 PM)

I didnt mention it. We'll get to the prediction the week of the fight.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

While I like Adamek, count me in the camp that thinks Pulev handles him quite easily, given Adameks past couple outings

D$
  (2:03 PM)

I happen to agree that if the fight is made, Pulev will beat Adamek and not in that tough of a fight.

Chase (Dallas, Tx)

Hey Dan,Do you think I'm crazy saying that Vitali Klitschko wrecks almost all heavyweights in history at his best? People think I'm insane when I say he would be competitive or beat most ATG's like Joe Louis, Ali, Foreman and Holmes. To make a still very, very good Lennox Lewis almost look one dimensional on short notice solidifies my position on this. I just want to know how you feel about it so I know If I'm fooling myself or not. Thanks.

D$
  (2:04 PM)

I agree with you.

the duder (PDX, OR)

Straight up hardest puncher ever?

D$
  (2:04 PM)

Earnie Shavers or George Foreman.

evan (venice, ca)

what did you think of ward's stint as an HBO commentator last weekend? i kept thinking he was scouting GGG some too.

D$
  (2:05 PM)

I thought Ward was good and has a future as a commentator if he wants one. Obviously, with a Ward-Golovkin being mentioned I am sure he was paying close attention.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

Isn't it sad how Kessler still hasn't accepted his defeat to Ward?

D$
  (2:07 PM)

I dont know if he has or hasnt but I know Ward took him to the woodshed.

Silva (San Diego)

Are you an Apple or Android kind of freak?

D$
  (2:07 PM)

Blackberry.

Brian (NJ)

Out of all the fighters in Top Rank's stable, Tim Bradley is the one that I really believe Bob Arum would accept a flat fee from GBP to fight one of their fighters without TR co-promoting because that appears to be the only way Bob's gonna actually make money on him. What are your thoughts?

D$
  (2:10 PM)

For the right offer, I agree.

D$
  (2:13 PM)

Here are the purses for the Showtime card on Saturday night, as per the Nevada commission: Matthysse $225k, Dallas $45k, Aydin $30k, Soto Karass $50k, Charlo $75k, Yorgey TBA (contract not filed yet).

Silva (San Diego)

When do you think we will see Areola in the ring with Wlad? Seems like a year and a half ago he was on the fast track to that but I haven't heard his name much recently as a Wlad opponent

D$
  (2:14 PM)

If Arreola beats Stiverne, he will be Vitali's mandatory. Wlad is not in their plans right now.

Fred (Pa)

canelo vs trout a done deal?

D$
  (2:14 PM)

I dont think so, not yet anyway. But they are being very quiet about it.

Matt (KC)

"what bad decisions did he (Pavlik) make other than pulling out of the ShoBox on short notice?" Uh, what about turning down a fight with Bute for a hefty payday?

D$
  (2:16 PM)

I dont consider that a "bad" decision. He decided he did not like that deal and didnt take it and it was well ahead of time, not at the last minute. There's a different between electing not to take a certain fight and asking for crazy money and/or weight provisions.

D$
  (2:17 PM)

By the way, I'll be on FNF tonight discussing Pavlik's retirement.

bill (carmel, ny)

dan, did you see the bottom line updates on espn saying that floyd and canelo are fighting on the same ppv card in may?

D$
  (2:18 PM)

No, but that is not accurate at the moment.

Silva (San Diego)

Hey Dan, do you Mosley will fight again now that the Paulie fight fell through?

D$
  (2:20 PM)

I assume that Mosley will fight again.

will (queens, ny)

Dan, has there ever been a fighter so intimidating that you were nervous going into and during the interview If so, who?

D$
  (2:20 PM)

Never.

Jason Michaels (Glendale CA)

Do you know what is happening with Vic Darchinyans next bout. He owned Del Valle . Is he fighting Donaire or Santa Cruz ?

D$
  (2:20 PM)

He has been mentioned as a possible opponent for Donaire in April. He is a free agent and no longer with Gary Shaw.

Sam alsaidi (Dearborn MI)

I know u replied to me on twitter but most website keep writing the brook vs Alexander will be I'm joe Louis arena. The fight is less then month a way and there's s no tickets for sale

D$
  (2:22 PM)

The fight IS NOT at Joe Louis. It is at the Masonic Temple. Tix, I believe, go on sale today.

Tim (Philly)

Have you ever been threatened by a boxer/promoter from something you reported?

D$
  (2:24 PM)

Many times, yes.

Robert (Washington, DC)

Do you think that with time to shake off the rust, Yuri Foreman could be a factor again in the 154 division? Other than Floyd and Canelo, there don't exactly appear to be a ton of active and experienced worldbeaters in that division.

D$
  (2:24 PM)

It wouldnt surprise me to see Yuri get another opportunity.

Lee (Los Angeles, CA)

We've been hearing about Chinese fighters for a while now. Do you think Zou Shiming will actually become a good pro?

D$
  (2:26 PM)

He's 31, which is old to be turning pro, especially after such a long, long amateur career. I saw him in the Olympics. He does not have a pro style at all and is a bit of a runner and stinker. BUT, he is popular in China from what they say. I think the signing for Top Rank is not so much about Shiming specifically, although TR will do what it can to build him as a pro, but more about gaining high-profile entrance into a potentially very, very, very lucrative market.

D$
  (2:28 PM)

Yorgey's contract is now filed. His purse for Saturday night is 20K.

Kev (Brooklyn)

Hey Dan, in your opinion who had the better career, Roy Jones or B-Hop? Jones was amazing in his prime - Hopkins stayed elite for an entire career.

D$
  (2:29 PM)

I would rate for overall accomplishment and quality wins BHop slightly ahead of Roy even though Roy did beat BHop head to head in 93.

D$
  (2:31 PM)

Thank for chatting today Fight Freaks. Hope you enjoy the weekend and the fights. Please check out all of our news stories and blogs and the updated schedule. Talk to you next week. Peace.
