Chat with Jake Trotter

Jake Trotter
  (4:00 PM)

OK, let's do this...

Brett Sullivan (Coweta,OK)

Any news on who might be in the lead between Oklahoma and Clemson for stand out athlete Adrian Baker?

Jake Trotter
  (4:01 PM)

Baker really hasn't shown his hand either way. If I had to throw odds on it, based on what our recruiting writers think, I'd go Clemson 55/OU 45. He would be an excellent late pull, but Venables going to be tough to beat on this one.

Wooferman (Houston Tx)

Things remain very quiet in Norman. By now we have had several players get the boot for grades etc. Any rumbling or other?

Jake Trotter
  (4:03 PM)

The only rumble has been Drew Allen likely transferring. I sorta wonder about DT Marquis Anderson's status. He tweeted the other day that he still hasn't been working out with the team. Anderson, remember, was suspended for most of last season. OU needs all DTs on deck.

Nathan (Norman)

Where is Landry's stock after the Senior Bowl?

Jake Trotter
  (4:04 PM)

Lower than before. How much lower? Hard to say. He'll have chances to redeem himself. But the Senior Bowl was a missed opportunity to separate himself from some of the other QBs. It was FSU's EJ Manuel, instead, who did just that.

theMOTexan (Ozarks)

Howdy Jake,I was wondering what your thoughts are about the B12 expanding. Many of us here believe it is necessary in order to keep from being left behind with all the conference realignments taking place. Even Mike Gundy feels it is necessary. Many of us believe that staying at 10 teams gives everyone a disadvantage when compared to other conferences as there are no round robin schedules in those.

Jake Trotter
  (4:06 PM)

I get the sense that many within the Big 12 are rethinking the issue. The problem is, where do you expand? Unless you poach from the ACC, the pickings are slim. It's hard to justify bringing in someone like Cincinnati, a school that would take out more than it brings in.

Mark (houston)

do you think we will use the qb under center some this year? May help with the play action

Jake Trotter
  (4:06 PM)

Sounds like Heupel wants to stick with the pistol formation, even with the new QB. So, no.

Nathan (Norman)

Next All-American from Oklahoma? Anybody on this team have a chance next year?

Jake Trotter
  (4:07 PM)

Aaron Colvin, definitely.

Jimmy the Blade (Norman)

What's your call on RRSO this year?

Jake Trotter
  (4:07 PM)

Still hard to pick Texas, even with all the returning starters.

Stan (Norman)

Will the Sooner Program be able to steal a recruit from William and Mary (D2 School)? I know the OL guy is committed there...wow how recruiting has fallen off

Jake Trotter
  (4:08 PM)

Actually, W&M is FCS. So, there's that...

trey allen (oklahoma city)

Is OU still working on Justin Manning?

Jake Trotter
  (4:08 PM)

Don't think so.

Ryan (Oklahoma) [via mobile]

I would rather have a shot at winning the NIT than make the dance this year. Call me crazy, but I think we crash the NIT this year. And then next year we make a run in the NCAA. Do you agree? Or are you 'pc' in saying just making the dance is worth more than anything else.

Jake Trotter
  (4:09 PM)

If that makes me "PC," so be it.

Jordan (Edmond)

Whose the front runner in the Drew Allen transfer sweepstakes? For some reason I'm thinking Indiana makes sense. Is Trevor Knight now front runner for the backup spot assuming he can't beat out Bell?

Jake Trotter
  (4:10 PM)

Yeah, I threw Indiana out there last week. Makes a lot of sense. Similar offense, Kevin Wilson connection, Indiana could use a QB, Hoosiers kind of intriguing, making strides. I like Knight's chances to be the No. 2.

Smylie (Oklahoma)

Any chance OU goes after Jackson Dillon?

Jake Trotter
  (4:10 PM)

Don't think so, unless they just miss on all these plan B guys and feel like they need to fill out the class.

Ed (Riverside, CA)

With his excellent week of work before the Senior Bowl Lane Johnson was honored at the Best Lineman at the Senior Bowl. Is he a first round lock now? Your thoughts.

Jake Trotter
  (4:11 PM)

Yes. The question now is, is he a Top 15 pick?

Rainy Dazed Ahead (Norman)

Trot Dawg, The meltdown against A&M was disgusting. Why is it that our D gets all the blame when our Offense racked up a grand total of 1 TD and 2 FGs? Should we switch to a dual-threat QB led Offensive scheme? Or should we stick with a Pro-style big armed passing QB? Does Bell have a NFL quality arm?

Jake Trotter
  (4:12 PM)

The offense threw out a dud in the Cotton Bowl, but no way is that the biggest of OU's problems. Johnny Football was toying with OU's defense. Then again, so did Tavon Austin, Joseph Randle, etc...

mark (shawnee)

Last year we seen bell hit a long td to trey in the spring game do you think trey well be the leading receiver next year

Jake Trotter
  (4:13 PM)

No, Jalen Saunders. Metoyer could start again, though.

Nathan (Norman)

Horns are loading up on highly ranked OLineman this year. Will it have any effect in '13 or is Mack Daddy going into "rebuilding" mode already?

Jake Trotter
  (4:13 PM)

O-linemen typically aren't ready to play as true freshmen. More likely, you'll see the effects of this o-line class in 2014, 2015.

Ed (Riverside, CA)

How do you see the chances of the Sooners getting LJ Moore as a commit for this class? 50/50, better or worse?

Jake Trotter
  (4:14 PM)

Maybe a little worse. But not much. Probably 55/45, like Baker.

Soonerfandave84 (OK)

Jake, does Jalen Saunders end up all B12 1st team next year??? I see less receptions for everyone as whole next year and think he would be the one guy who would rack up the most. Though Shepard may too.

Jake Trotter
  (4:16 PM)

Yeah, with Landry gone, you would think there will be less passing to go around. Jalen would be a very good candidate to be All-Big 12 in receiving, especially with Terrance Williams, Steadman Bailey gone. OSU's Josh Stewart is probably the best receiver coming back to school next year. Saunders might be second.

LASooner28 (Manhattan Beach, CA)

I think Derrick Woods is a hidden gem. Can you tell me the Scout team award winners in the last 3 years so I get some perspective?

Jake Trotter
  (4:17 PM)

Sam Bradford and Ryan Broyles were both outstanding scout-team guys. Can't remember the actual winners, though.

Mike (Texas)

What are your thoughts on Hatari Byrd? Think he can make an impact starting next year?

Jake Trotter
  (4:17 PM)

He might have to. Who else is there at safety?

Wooferman (Houston Tx)

Thanks for taking all of my questions....Last one for today, If you had to choose between last years D and this next season's D with 10 new starters which team would you rather field and why? thanks again

Jake Trotter
  (4:18 PM)

It's actually 8 new starters, but the point is taken. Jefferson, Hurst, King, Harris... on paper, at this moment, I'd take the '12 lineup over the '13 one.

ThunderBuzzy (Norman)

JakeO, Metoyer was hyped like a first round NFL draft pick last season. Will he break 500 yards receiving this year? Who will be our leading receiver?

Jake Trotter
  (4:19 PM)

Yes, and Saunders.

YoMootMama (Norman)

Recruiting - what the heck is going on? If I'm not mistaken, Lil Bro's incoming class looks as good or better than ours, yes/no?And how the heck has Lil Bro been able to have their commits locked for 6 months, meanwhile we're scrounging through the recruiting dumpster like a homeless liberal arts drop-out? Please help me unravel this.

Jake Trotter
  (4:20 PM)

I'm a liberal arts college graduate. Why you attacking us now?

Shawn (Ohio)

Will Stoops use the same formation Defensively next year with so many new faces? Besides Colvin who will stand out?

Jake Trotter
  (4:21 PM)

Lot of buzz OU might dabble with a 3-4. Be interesting to see how they'd do that, and stop the run up the middle -- considering they couldn't do that playing two DTs last season.

John (OKC)

UTEP, UNLV, Iowa State, Memphis, William and Mary...OU has had some great recruiting battles this year. What changes do you think Bob does to improve recruiting for future years. Barry Switzer's famous line, "its about the Jimmy's and the Joe's, not the X's and the O's." Program needs more talented players.

Jake Trotter
  (4:22 PM)

He could shake up the staff a little. Programs around the country are trying to get younger. Perhaps that would kickstart recruiting, especially on the defensive side.

Jordan (Canada)

Whos the best player in this class? I think its gotta be Ward

Jake Trotter
  (4:23 PM)

I like DJ Ward, too. Solid case could be made.

Kris (Des Moines)

Rate Bob Stoops engagment level from 1-100 on winning anouther NC is Norman?

Jake Trotter
  (4:24 PM)

On a scale of 1-100 on how confusing this question is, I give it a 97.

Soonerfandave84 (OK)

Jake, any hope on another DT before signing day? Maybe another LB?

Jake Trotter
  (4:25 PM)

DT more likely than LB. LBs out there seem to be all snatched up.

Trevor Knight (Norman)

Will Coach Stoops install an offensive scheme that highlights my wheels? Or do I have to try and become a Pro passer? Do you think I have the arm for it?

Jake Trotter
  (4:25 PM)

Yeah, the arm is there. I would like for Heupel to add some QB run game, but that sounds unlikely.

Ray (OKC)

How highly rated do you think Justice Hansen will be when they give out rankings for the 2014 class?

Jake Trotter
  (4:26 PM)

Pretty high.

mark (shawnee)

I'm a big Roy finch fan any chance he makes more of an impact this upcoming season

Jake Trotter
  (4:26 PM)

Don't hold your breath, else you might suffocate.

Robert Largent (Tahlequah)

Is the NCAA going to change recruiting rules?

Jake Trotter
  (4:26 PM)

Yes, mass changes.

bob (Tuscaloosa)

B12 should invite Cincy & Louisville. At least we could be good in basketball

Jake Trotter
  (4:27 PM)

Too late on Louisville (ACC).

Jason (Joplin, MO)

How many recruits do we sign next week...25-28? Any under the radar recruits that might become a pleasent surprise?

Jake Trotter
  (4:29 PM)

This George Adeosun OT is intriguing. I know a week ago he was going to William & Mary, but he's incredibly bright, and some of our recruiting writers think he's underrated. Who knows? Who would have thought Lane Johnson would be a 1st round LT pick when he signed out of juco playing QB?

Robert Largent (Tahlequah)

DO you see any Safeties out there that might be converted to LB? Like Striker or Box?

Jake Trotter
  (4:30 PM)

OU is light on safeties as it were, so no.

Jim (Los Angeles)

I gotta believe with the way JF torched his defense in the Cotton, Stoops wants to rethink this no QB run game. Right?

Jake Trotter
  (4:30 PM)

You would think. But the way Heupel has talked about it, maybe not.

nate (colorado)

Jake, I was under the impression that QB run game was likely on its way, but above you suggest Heupel doesn't seem to be going that way. Can you elaborate?

Jake Trotter
  (4:31 PM)

Yeah, he said in a radio interview last week that the offense would largely remain the same without designed QB run game.

Pete (Florida)

OU seems to be at there best when the D making stops. How would you rank the OU D next season compared to the rest of the B12?

Jake Trotter
  (4:32 PM)

Below TCU, but possibly as good as any other. Last I checked, the Big 12 was not overflowing with intimidating defenses.

thebigdroot (Green Country)

Wow alot of people are getting frustrated by the amount of stars a player has. How quickly we forget the Sam Bradford's of the world. Just because the so called experts are down grading their talent doesn't mean it's not there. It's about development folks- look at Texas. Anyways question, how many early enrollee's did we get this year?

Jake Trotter
  (4:33 PM)

Excellent point. EEs: DE DJ Ward, S Ahmad Thomas, WR Dannon Cavil, P Jed Barnett.

Soonerfandave84 (OK)

Jake, I got you down for 4:02 OK time

Jake Trotter
  (4:34 PM)

Can I get in on the action for 4 p.m. sharp?

Prince (Norman)

Do you think if we had moved to the SEC like a&m did, that we'd be in the same boat as them? Or more like mizzou?

Jake Trotter
  (4:36 PM)

OU is OU, no matter the conference. But I think recruiting to the SEC has really bolstered Texas A&M. Hard to see how it wouldn't have helped OU, too.

Dan (Las Vegas)

Dannon Cavil is a really interesting kid I think, any chance they redshirt him and move him to TE in the future given his size and our overabundance of WRs and lack of impact TEs?

Jake Trotter
  (4:37 PM)

Possible he plays some flex tight end, although if he can play now, they would use him in 2013. OU needs all the TE production it can get.

CKS (the "asylum")

Jake, when I was in high school i could throw a pigskin a quarter mile. If coach wouldve put me in we woulda won state.

Jake Trotter
  (4:37 PM)

OK, Napoleon's uncle.

Pete (Florida)

OU seems to be at there best when the D making stops. How would you rank the OU D next season compared to the rest of the B12?

Jake Trotter
  (4:38 PM)

TCU head and shoulders above the rest. They have a marquee coverman in Verrett, and a big-time pass rusher in Fields. The battle for 2nd is wide open.

Wil (Bixby)

Please give us some good recruiting news!? Obviously gotta get some OL, DT, and LB's!

Jake Trotter
  (4:40 PM)

Say, pretty please.

nate (colorado)

Jake, interesting article in the Tulsa World regarding Landry's seeming lack of development, suggesting it would be challenging for any player in this offensive system to improve to that next level b/c the hurry-up offense takes all(most) leads from coach calling in plays leaving QB no room to learn to read the D. Plus always taking snaps from shotgun. Your thoughts?

Jake Trotter
  (4:41 PM)

May be some merit to it. Although plenty of hurry-up QBs have excelled at the next level (Sam Bradford was rookie of the year).

Blake Bell (Running for my Life)

Jake, I'm a bit concerned that Josh will fall back onto the Bell Dozer if we get behind in games. My concern is that if I have to run 10-15 times/game (I know it's not supposed to happen, but...) eventually I will get tagged like Collin Klein did against OState. Klein never was the same after OState knocked him out and it likely cost him the Heisman and KState a Natty shot. How can I pull this off without getting busted up eventually?

Jake Trotter
  (4:43 PM)

I think that's why Heupel is afraid of falling into calling designed QB run plays. There's a balance. OU doesn't have to run Bell like K-State did Klein (which Snyder frankly had to do to give K-State some pop offensively). But Bell is such a good runner, how could you take that out of the arsenal completely? Be interesting to see where Heupel falls on this, but I think not running Bell (or Knight or Thompson) at all is leaving some cards on the table.

Ray (OKC)

How good do you think Metoyer will be this year?

Jake Trotter
  (4:44 PM)

Chance to be very good. Doesn't always happen for true freshmen. He was also banged up last year. With a new QB, and some health, he could emerge big time in 2013.

Jake Trotter
  (4:44 PM)

I say "with a new QB" btw, because Landry and Metoyer were never on the same page, for whatever reason.

John (OKC)

OU has 3 incoming DT's. One JUCO and 2 High School....I've heard a rumor that its likely 2 won't qualify academically, so really one undersized DT makes it to Norman. Is this correct? I guess a 3-4 defense is a reality. Wait now we need LBs? The 7 DB defense didn't work this year, maybe the 8 DB defense is the answer.

Jake Trotter
  (4:46 PM)

I think they feel like DE is the strongest position on the team going forward with Dimon, Tapper, Onouha, Ward, and maybe the 3-4 is a way to best utilize all those guys.

Blane (Oklahoma)

can Bell be a good pocket passer

Jake Trotter
  (4:46 PM)

If he's not, he won't win the starting job.

Don (OKC)

Lost our QB, recruiting doesn't look very good, defense gonna be worse than last year, any GOOD news for us for the upcoming season

Jake Trotter
  (4:48 PM)

Pressure will be off the team, probably more so than any other preseason since 2000. Maybe this team plays looser, gets some momentum, builds excitement... you never know.

Tony A (Miami Beach)

So who's in the lead for the QB job next season- Haha just kidding:Does OU have enough carries to satisfy all the RB's next year (including my main man Millard)? Can Ford push for playing time? He kind of looks like a player that could make an impact right away at a lot of places.

Jake Trotter
  (4:49 PM)

Be interesting to see what they do with Ford. Either he or Alex Ross will be the guy in 2014. If they feel like it might be Ford, they may try to play him in spots this next season, so he'll be ready to roll in 2014.

Nathan (Norman)

Do we have a tight-end on this roster who deserves a couple touches a game?

Jake Trotter
  (4:49 PM)

Not really.

Shawn (Ohio)

Will Stoops use the same formation Defensively next year with so many new faces? Besides Colvin who will stand out?

Jake Trotter
  (4:50 PM)

Frank Shannon could have a big year. The young DEs could be fierce, too, and will push some of the older guys. Watch out for Gary Simon, Eric Striker, too. Intriguing prospects.

Dan (Las Vegas)

With all this 3-4 talk, who fits in as the 3 up front and who would be the rushing OLBs?

Jake Trotter
  (4:52 PM)

I assume it would resemble the 2010 Bedlam game, with a one DE playing OLB (Beal) and a David King type anchoring end on the other side. The key is NG, and I have problems believing in Jordan Phillips or Jordan Wade requiring double teams, which is a problem for this set. You need a guy like Notre Dame's Tuitt to really have a chance to dominate week in, week out.

BoomerKeith (Denver)

I'm here Jake, go ahead and start.

Jake Trotter
  (4:52 PM)

Ok

BoomerKeith (Denver)

What does your starting WR unit look like for 2013 (assuming Jaz is allowed to play)?

Jake Trotter
  (4:53 PM)

Sterling at slot, Saunders and either Metoyer/Neal/Jaz on the outside. Saunders, like Stills this past season, will go back and forth. He played on the outside for 2 years at Fresno, so it wouldn't be a huge transition for him.

Jake (Norman)

What's the likelihood we see Mangino back in Norman in the near future? Either coaching OL or maybe playing DT (does he have eligibility left?)

Jake Trotter
  (4:54 PM)

Always a possibility (the coaching part) but don't think it's happening in 2013.

Kale Gundy (Soonerville)

Do I need to leave to further my career?

Jake Trotter
  (4:55 PM)

Are you really wanting to further your career? Seems like you're pretty content where you are.

Smylie (Oklahoma)

how much longer do u think bob has in Norman

Jake Trotter
  (4:55 PM)

For as long as he wants.

CS (NORMAN)

U mean Louis Nix... a 330 lb nose guard not Tuitt

Jake Trotter
  (4:55 PM)

Yes, my fault, Tuitt is the DE.

Dan (Las Vegas)

I know it's early to look forward, but with all the watch list kids for next year in state, who is the #1 can't miss 2014 kid right now?

Jake Trotter
  (4:56 PM)

Hard for me to narrow down the 2014 class to one guy at this point, but a dominating DT has to be the No. 1 priority.

Boon Pickens (Hawaii)

Does OU have a chance against ND next year. They dont play as well at home and are loosing a few key players?

Jake Trotter
  (4:57 PM)

Sure. Notre Dame had a great year, but they are beatable.

BoomerKeith (Denver)

Before you leave...give us a quick movie recommendation.

Jake Trotter
  (4:58 PM)

Zero Dark Thirty was fantastic. Took my nieces to Wreck It Ralph, which was pretty solid all things considered. Rented End of Watch the other day. OK. Not great.

Nathan (Norman)

Thanks for taking all my questions. I feel special!

Jake Trotter
  (4:59 PM)

You're very welcome.

Ray (OKC)

Out of the receivers we currently have on the roster and the recruits coming in, who do you think will end up being the best receiver of the group?

Jake Trotter
  (4:59 PM)

Excluding Saunders? Hard to argue against Shepard. He's Ryan Broyles 2.0.

Toby Keith (Nashville Oklahoma)

Best lunch spot(s) in Norman?

Jake Trotter
  (5:00 PM)

The Greek House.

Jake Trotter
  (5:01 PM)

Guys, that's it for today. Thanks for all the questions. Sorry I could not get to all of them. We'll do it again next Monday, same time, same place. Have a great week, and follow us on SoonerNation for the latest in recruiting as we near signing day.
