Chuck will be along in a second. Thanks for your patience.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:07 PM)

Hi, sorry about the late start. Let's go!

Kirk (Las Vegas)

Do you think, in the next few years, the Mavs will need to decide to bottom out and rebuild in order to get back to a championship level? Or can they continue to retool with undervalued assets?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:08 PM)

I don't think they'll have to bottom out nor should they believe they should. Develop a losers mentality and its hard to get rid of it. See Minnesota (No playoffs the last 8 years), and Sacramento no playoffs the last 6).

David (Dallas)

Bring Josh Smith to tempt Howard?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:10 PM)

One doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the other, beyond the fact their both homeboys of the ATL. But I am a Josh Smith fan, as long as he isn't hoisting up 20 footers. Incredibly versatile player

Byron (Charlotte, NC )

I don't think there is a trade out there that can help the Mavs this year, so what do they need to do in the off season to get back to a playoff contending team?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:12 PM)

For one, really take the draft seriously. Unfortunately, this doesn't appear to be a draft that is chock full of NBA star talent. Actually, the draft of 2014 is the one that if you have to be in the lottery, is the year to do it. Still, under the new CBA, you have got to be as young and as cheap as possible. Because even if you are good as accumulating talent, the fact that you ultimately might have to let some of it go (Memphis), means you must keep replenishing

Justin (Dallas Texas.)

Who could we get for Roddy and Kaman?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:13 PM)

By themselves, not much. As part of filler in a multi team trade who knows?

Marcus (Dallas)

I'm a RC fan but in the game vs. Portland, why didn't RC put a taller defender on the player throwing the ball out of bounds with 1.5 seconds to go? IMO, it was too easy of a pass to Aldridge at his spot on the floor.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:14 PM)

It's a good point. Also, while Wright has length, he doesn't have strength, so it was easy for LA to take a couple of dribbles to get into his sweet spot. Still, Wright really challenged the shot. LA made a better play

Shawn Schultz (Mesquite, Texas)

Why didn't our Mavericks try and get Jose Calderon? Even if they had to give up Kaman and Carter, that shouldve been a no brainer, in getting a true point guard

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:18 PM)

I'm a huge fan of Calderon, but this is all about timing. Had we been talking a month ago I think the deal would have gone down. But Collison has improved dramatically in the last month especially in his assist/TO ratio. That has always been the Calderon strength, but he doesn't have the speed or quicks of collision, and isn't nearly as good a defender. And Carter still remains a guy whose impact is noticeable when he's on the floor. Tough call. Can see both sides of argument.

Will Peters (Fort Worth TX)

If the Mavericks don't get Dwight Howard, what is their best plan for the future?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:19 PM)

The best plan is to keep the powder dry as long as possible, while improving their drafting to actually find something beyond a contributor.

Jerry (Allen) [via mobile]

Who's winning the West this year Chuck?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:21 PM)

San Antonio. Should have won it last year. will win nit this year with Duncan returning to form. Parker playing the best he's ever played, and all those shooters and role players who play seamlessly within the system. They are the most fun team in the league to watch, and to me, it's not really debatable

Awayne (Indy)

Greg Oden to the Mavs,if you don't put high expectations on him is this a low risk gamble that could give them some depth in the middle?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:23 PM)

I am ALL over this idea. I have been an Oden champion from Day 1. His career has been star crossed for sure, but I am a believer in the traditional center position. If you have a chance to get a player who can play that way for you who has some skill you do it and you don't look back. There's a lot of work for Oden to do, for sure, but since there are so few players coming up who have the ability to change the game defensively the way he can, you have to take the flyer.

Marcus (Dallas)

Do you feel there should be replay for charge calls at the end of the game to check if they are in the cylinder or moving on the charge?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:26 PM)

No. I just want the right call to be made. I'm worried if you start adding that to the list of things that can be reviwed that the list will never end. Mavs have been unfortunate in that area lately with that call and the clear path foul on Collison in the OKC game. Oops doesn't really cut it. Get the call right

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:27 PM)

I don't think anyone knows, because the Mavs are a team that keeps their cards close to the vest.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (12:29 PM)

But I will say that If I were the mavs I would do everything I could to try to foster a Dwight Howard deal. do what Golden State did with Bogut last year in getting him from Milwaukee. He never played for them last year, but it didn't matter. They had their big, and while it has taken a long time for Bogut to get back, now that's he's back, the Warriors are over the moon excited about their chances, and they should be. Of course, the Warriors had Monta Ellis to trade and the Mavs have nothing like that. But if Dwight says he really wants to be here, then the Mavs have to find out how they can get that done

We'll wrap it here for today. Have to hop over to shootaround. Hope you'll join Brad Davis and me for Mavs-Warriors tonight around 9:45 on ESPNDallas 103.3 FM.
