Chat with KC Joyner

KC Joyner
  (4:00 PM)

Good afternoon! Let's talk some football!

Alex (Anaheim)

I feel like my receivers disappointed this year and my running backs were mostly pleasant surprises. Was this a trend of sorts, or am I just feeling burned because I drafted Fitzgerald?

KC Joyner
  (4:01 PM)

The running back class last year was full of question marks going into the season, so anyone who turned out to be a good producer was something of a surprise. The WR class, by contrast, looked to be quite strong and didn't turn out to be quite as good as thought.

Rick (MI)

Megatron good.Mike Wallace bad.

KC Joyner
  (4:02 PM)

Why when I read this does it sound like it should be read in a caveman voice?

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will win Super Bowl XLVII?

KC Joyner
  (4:03 PM)

Really close call but after looking over the lineups, it seems that SF has more potential big plays on its roster. Barring a return/defensive TD by Baltimore, the Niners should win this one.

Packer Backer (Green Bay (best place on earth))

do u think there should be a cap on HOF selections from a particular team in a period, e.g., Glory Year Packers (1960s) look like they will be adding Dave Robinson but Jerry Kramer still not in; Dave Robinson would be 11th and Kramer would be potentially 12th;thanks!

KC Joyner
  (4:04 PM)

Why place a cap? Some team may end up with even more great talent than the 60s Packers or 70s Steelers and shouldn't be held back because of some artificial limitation. Related note - I'm totally on board with Kramer for HOF.

Sean (Iowa) [via mobile]

Will this upcoming season for the Vikings offense be based on Christian Ponder's improvement or Bill Musgrave's scheme success?

KC Joyner
  (4:06 PM)

Ponder is going to have to improve, as the Vikings can't count on Peterson to post big numbers against stacked defensive boxes all of the time.

Keanu (Honolulu)

Hi KC, would you rather have Jennings or Wallace if you were Miami?

KC Joyner
  (4:07 PM)

Wallace, assuming he's on board with the plan.

Nick (Nyc)

Do you think the pistol/option is a passing fad? or could it be seen as a relatively simple play that has a lot of different ways to beat the defense which will become the bread and butter for the teams that embrace it? It makes me think a little bit of the Sweep used by the Packers way back when.

KC Joyner
  (4:08 PM)

Don't see it as a fad, at least as long as colleges are still using it. This is just a case of the NFL tapping into the skills that the colleges are providing it with.

Candy (Slippery Rock)

Hello KC, which one of these Dolphin FA is worth signing: Hartline, Sean Smith, or Randy Starks?

KC Joyner
  (4:10 PM)

All of them are actually worth signing. Smith is probably the best option of the bunch given that he is a CB but all three are players Miami will not want to have to replace.

milt (las vegas)

Who is covering Randy Moss in the super bowl? Do you think he will be a big part offensively?

KC Joyner
  (4:11 PM)

It's hard to say since they will be moving him around a lot. Would think SF would want to get him lined up against Cary Williams, since Williams had a bad year coverage-wise, but they may want to target their gameplan around getting Crabtree on Williams.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Which safety would you rathr have for 2 years - Ed Reed or Dashon Goldson?

KC Joyner
  (4:14 PM)

Goldson. It's that old Raider philosophy of having someone on defense who makes receivers fear crossing the middle of the field. Reed can hit but Goldson casts more fear on receivers.

ed reed (NOLA)

who wins in a 40...Kaepernick or Moss?

KC Joyner
  (4:15 PM)

That's what the NFL needs in place of the Pro Bowl - skills competitions to see who is the fastest & strongest players. I'll take Moss in a 40 but CK in a 100-yard dash, as CK's longer strides would eventually win a longer race.

Bert (St. Paul, MN)

Darren McFadden or Chris Johnson in a dynasty league and why?

KC Joyner
  (4:17 PM)

Johnson. Simply put, DMC just hasn't shown that he can produce on a consistent basis for a full season. Johnson has and now that he is no longer being held back by subpar playcalling, he should be able to produce at his usual level.

ed reed (NOLA)

Moss doesn't have long strides?

KC Joyner
  (4:18 PM)

Sure, but not like Kaepernick. Check out that 50-yard scramble run CK made against the Rams.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What did you think of the 2013 AFC-NFC Pro Bowl Last Sunday?

KC Joyner
  (4:18 PM)

It beat watching a sitcom.

Garrett (Fargo)

Is there any scenerio that Titus Young is back in Detroit next year? Any fantasy value next year?

KC Joyner
  (4:19 PM)

In some alternate universe, Young is playing with the Lions in 2013. In this one, it's hard to see that being the case. He's got value if he lands on a team that knows how to deal with his truculence.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Brock Osweiler - do the Broncos have a great QB in 4 years, or did they waste a draft pick during the Peyton Manning era?

KC Joyner
  (4:20 PM)

Won't go so far as to call it a wasted draft pick (Peyton may stick around for another 3-4 years) but can't say I see the term great quarterback being applied to him by decade's end.

person (dc)

I know ESPN is making everybody emphasize QBR, but to me it still produces too many results that fail the sniff test.

KC Joyner
  (4:22 PM)

Couldn't disagree more on multiple fronts. I've never been told I have to emphasize Total QBR. As far as its results, it does emphasize rushing more than a lot of systems but that is exactly what is needed in today's day and age where the rushing QB is becoming more of a standard.

Collin K. (NOLA)

I think I'd take Moss in a 40 or 100...while Kaepernicking.

KC Joyner
  (4:23 PM)

Best answer to that question!

person (dc)

By the way I pretty much agree with your conclusion about Flacco.

KC Joyner
  (4:24 PM)

Thanks for that. Funny thing is that article wasn't penned to knock Flacco. It was rather to point out that there is little reason to think he'll be seen as elite. Heck, if Eli isn't hands down elite after two Super Bowls and top-flight stat totals, it's hard to see Flacco being elite after one SB & lesser numbers.

mike (new jersey)

which players would you select if you were the steelers in the first 4 rounds?

KC Joyner
  (4:25 PM)

Defense would rule the roost. Would probably get at least one of the safeties (Matt Elam being a prime candidate) as well as one of the quality front seven picks (this draft is stocked with good players at those positions). Might want to get an OL as well, but this draft isn't quite as deep in OL as it is in other areas.

Angry Mike (SF,CA)

Scientist, my man! In his recent ESPN article about reasonable landing places for Darrelle Revis, Steve Palazzolo mentioned Cincy, stating: "the Bengals got excellent production out of their cornerbacks last year. But with Adam Jones and Terence Newman slated for free agency, change is in the air."Is this true? Did Jones and Newman have good seasons? After Jones was considered a bust in Dallas and Newman was considered old and slow? If so, what does it say about the Dallas coaching staff's ability to get the most out of their players? (see: Martellus Bennett)Thank you for taking the time to read this, and have a great day.

KC Joyner
  (4:27 PM)

Good to hear from you! Nutshell answer is those two CBs did have quality seasons. Dallas is known for not being able to get the most out of its players and these cases simply are another case of proving that point.

Doink the Clown (The Circus)

What's your (very early) outlook on the 2013 Eagles? Another bad season, mediocre (which would actually be considered bad) or do they rebound and become a playoff team? I know a lot hinges on O and D coordinators and who will be at QB, but just a real prelim outlook/ guess...thanks!

KC Joyner
  (4:28 PM)

How they ever convinced Matt Borne to take on the Doink role is beyond me. This will be a transition year for the Eagles, as there are a lot of changes Kelly will have to make to this team. First glance says they go 7-9 and then have a shot at double digit wins in 2014.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

That being said, there's a 30% chance that Flacco gets Peyton Manning money, as has been reported he wants?

KC Joyner
  (4:30 PM)

Some of that has to do with how the CBA has changed the salary structure. It means CK & Wilson won't get new deals to adjust to their performance level but it also means those monies will go to someone like Flacco who deserves a big payday (elite or no).

bugsy mcgraw (florida)

you remember bugsy? if so, you're really old school! My question is about Andy Reid, think he turns the chiefs around as quickly as he did the eagles??

KC Joyner
  (4:31 PM)

Sure do. I remember seeing him in Championship Wrestling from Florida with Gordon Solie if memory serves correct. Chiefs have a ton of talent but Reid needs a QB. If/when he gets one, that team can take off but until that happens, a .500 record will be the ceiling.

PK (Stockton)

How many points do you think the 49ers are gonna put against the raven d

KC Joyner
  (4:32 PM)

They'll hit a few big plays and end up with, say, 27 points. Got them winning it something like 27-24.

John (Columbus, OH)

The Jets should trade Revis - yes or no? Why? Thanks!

KC Joyner
  (4:33 PM)

Not trying to go half on the question but it all depends on what they can get in return. Having said that, as long as Ryan is their coach, this team is going to have to win with D first. Can't trade away great defensive talent and win that way in that scenario, so no trade.

Yokozuna (The big wrestling ring in the sky---and i mean BIG)

Bonzai!!!!! That is all

KC Joyner
  (4:34 PM)

Not sure what this has to do with football, but it was done with enthusiasm and that has to garner some respect.

Packer Backer (Green Bay (best place on earth))

best wrs ever: 1) Don Hutson; 2) Jerry Rice ....... top 20ish: Randy Moss

KC Joyner
  (4:35 PM)

Agree that Hutson is in the top 2. Dr. Z saw the tape back in the day and said Hutson was every bit the player he was made out to be and if it was good enough for Z, it's good enough for me.

Aggie (TX)

Crazy question, how would Tebow work on Chip Kelly's offense?#ducking

KC Joyner
  (4:36 PM)

Tebow could work to a certain extent but Kelly does value accurate passing and Tebow doesn't bring that to the table. Put it this way - if he had Tebow on the roster, Kelly gets a lot more out of him than the Jets did last year.

Luke (Australia)

G'day mate. Do you think that that Cardinals target a Barkely/Smith in the draft? I really don't want them to panic and trade for a Smith/flynn stop-gap guy. Either start again in the draft, or see what Kolb can do

KC Joyner
  (4:37 PM)

G'day to you as well! They should target Barkley/Smith in the draft. Kolb isn't definitely the answer and since that is the case, they might as well get some other talent on the roster and make it a competition. BTW, Barkley/Smith are being undervalued at this point.

The Nature Boy (hopefully nowhere near a ring)

WOOOO! Why am I still wrestling at age 62?? What team makes the big leap next year? I say Rams, improving Bradford and one more year of Fisher will do the trick...

KC Joyner
  (4:39 PM)

Why he's still taking bumps is beyond me. He should be working as a manager type who can get some of the young talent over with the crowd. Totally agree on the Rams. Their DL is impactful (they dominated the SF O line) and Bradford has a ton of upside.

Cris Carter (mike and mike)

where is my name in this best ever talk? I'm in the top 10 if not higher and I'm still not in the hall of fame? Come on man!

KC Joyner
  (4:40 PM)

Hey, I've been on the Cris Carter for HOF bandwagon for a couple of years now. Do a search on ESPN.com for KC Joyner and Cris Carter and you'll see a couple of articles touting his case.

Lucas (Brazil)

What was the main Cardinals' problem in 2012?

KC Joyner
  (4:40 PM)

Hands down, it was the O line. That offense will go nowhere until they get that issue fixed.

playboy buddy rose (squared circle)

Buddy Rose was the most out of shape rassler ever. Anyway: welker, lloyd, edelman...who do you keep, given age, performance, need?

KC Joyner
  (4:41 PM)

I think Marty Jannetty once called him a fat tub of lard (which actually sounds kind of redundant). Keep Welker out of that group, although he has to be kept at a lower price than he is currently going to command.

Scientist Fan (Fl )

where do you have Kaepernick for next years ranks? Thanks!

KC Joyner
  (4:42 PM)

Still got a ways to go to compile the 2013 FFB rankings but would say that CK will at least hit the top 10 (rushing points go a long ways to adding value).

Aggie (TX)

Regarding Newman and Cincy, it also helps to have good safeties and Geno Atkins rushing the QB.

KC Joyner
  (4:43 PM)

Very true.

John (Columbus, OH)

Would McElroy be a better choice than Sanchez in the Jets new West Coast scheme?

KC Joyner
  (4:44 PM)

Not if Sanchez steps his game up.

Packer Backer (Green Bay (best place on earth))

do u think Bobby Dillon belongs in HOF (1950s packer player w/ one eye that has 50+ INT);

KC Joyner
  (4:44 PM)

Now that's an old school name! Put it this way - he ought to be under strong consideration by the Seniors Committee. Having said that, Kramer is still the top Packer not in Canton.

Gabe (Milwaukee)

More upside: Newton or Kaepernick?

KC Joyner
  (4:46 PM)

Kaepernick, at least as long as he doesn't get caught up in the idea of building his brand. That seems to be Newton's top priority (note how he mentions that, and not being a great QB, as a goal in his phone commercial) and as long as that is the case, Newton won't get the most out of his talent.

Scientist Fan (Fl )

The rushing record in a superbowl is 64 yards for a qb. Think it gets beat Sunday?

KC Joyner
  (4:46 PM)

Absolutely.

Carlos (san jose)

Since we're mixing wrestling with football, who was the best former football player to make the croos over to the ring? Ron Simmons was a beast at FSU but I dont remember if he even made the pros

KC Joyner
  (4:47 PM)

Simmons didn't quite make it in the NFL if memory serves correct. Bronko Nagurski would be the answer, as he was a multiple time NWA champion back in the day and is a pro football HOFer.

The Rock (Movies)

Would you keep Gronk in a keeper league for 2013? I picked him up as a FA after week 1 in 2011 and obviously kept him after that year, losing my 13th round pick (you lose a pick 2 rounds before where u drafted the person or round 13 if they were a FA pickup). So, I would lose the 11th round pick this year. I think you still gotta keep him, even with the injuries, because he'll be a round 2-4 type guy, right? I know this is hard without knowing the other players on my roster---picked up CK as a FA, so could keep him too.

KC Joyner
  (4:48 PM)

Top caliber tight ends are going to be a rare commodity in fantasy football next year. Keep Gronk.

Al (Wausau, WI)

KC, the best way to improve the Vikings passing game is by drafting positions ________________- and by using free agency for positions ____________. How would you answer these questions?

KC Joyner
  (4:49 PM)

They need WRs more than anything else. The draft has some quality prospects there but no one who can make the kind of immediate impact a Julio Jones or A.J. Green made. FA isn't looking that promising, either.

Andrew (SF)

Everyone says Cousins is indispensable given RG3's injury tendency, but what if they traded him for an offensive lineman...you know, to protect him?

KC Joyner
  (4:50 PM)

It's trading one type of insurance policy for another. And since OL is a position that can be coached up, it would probably be better to keep Cousins.

Gabe (Milwaukee)

Who are a few players you really like in this year's Draft Class.

KC Joyner
  (4:51 PM)

Mentioned Elam earlier. Like Stedman Bailey as a sleeper. Am more sold on Barkley than most.

John (Columbus, OH)

Keeper league - get to keep 3 players. I picked up Kaepernick late in the season as a free agent. Should I cut Brees lose and hope Kaepernick keeps the momentum going? Letting Brees go would give me a 1st pick back. My other two keepers are AP and Demaryius Thomas.

KC Joyner
  (4:53 PM)

That's a really tough call. Kind of depends on who might be available for that first pick. Will put it this way - out of that group, AP & Brees will be blue rated and DT

Mike (San Diego)

So the SB rushing record for a QB falls this Sunday? I didn't think Flacco had that kind of ability! *ba dum bum*

KC Joyner
  (4:54 PM)

He'll be here all week, folks. Remember to tip your waiters and waitresses.

Chris (Fresno)

Do you think that Ray Lewis and Suggs can keep up with Kaepernick, James and Davis on turf??? It seems like as long as the Niners play smart, the Ravens wont be able to keep up.

KC Joyner
  (4:55 PM)

Agree. The Niners seem to have more big play options than Baltimore. Can come up with 5-7 SF players capable of making a big play. For Baltimore, it's more like 4-6.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

What happened in StL? Rob Ryan was the DC, then AFTER they hired him they realized he ran a 3-4???

KC Joyner
  (4:56 PM)

I think they figured he would be amenable to running a hybrid system and then found that wasn't as amenable after the fact. Got to wonder why that didn't come up in the interview.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What is the Best & the Worst Super Bowl that you have seen out of all 46 Super Bowls that were Played?

KC Joyner
  (4:57 PM)

Still have SBs 14 and 25 as personal favorites. Worst would have to be 24 where SF just dominated Denver from start to finish (what a snoozer of a game).

Ryan (Germantown, MD)

Where do you see Osi ending up next season?

KC Joyner
  (4:58 PM)

Have only taken a cursory look at the situation but wouldn't be surprised to see him back in NY. The Giants know how to get the most out of his talent.

KC Joyner
  (5:00 PM)

Well, dinner is almost ready so it's time to hit the road. Couple of quick notes - the TFS material is always posted on Twitter @KCJoynerTFS. I'll be taking part in an in-game Super Bowl chat on ESPN.com, so stop by and say hey if you have some free time during the game. Thanks again for all of the questions and I hope to see you all here next week!
