When you post your recruiting updates, do you break out a bottle of wine and sit back and laugh at the ridiculous comments and bickering about star ratings and the number of elgible scholarships and school rankings. Please keep up the good work, August is sooooo Far away.
Thank you, Curtis, for the first clean comment of the afternoon. You know how I feel about recruiting rankings. None of it means diddly poo, to borrow a phrase from the always quotable Jim Mora.
If louisville does go undefeated how likely is it for them to go to the national championship? What would need to happen in other conferences for this to happen?
My guess is they would need teams from the bigger conferences to have at least one loss. But I still am not sure if an undefeated Louisville makes it in over a one-loss Alabama. Probably all depends on how the rankings go. I will say Louisville would be in a better spot as a Top 10 team as opposed to starting the year unranked. But the SOS is going to be really bad again.
Is it me or does it feel that the hiring of TJ Weist has already had a big impact on recruiting for the Huskies? Picking up lots on the offense side with Tight Ends and Wide Receivers and now the Boston College QB recruit Tim Boyle from Connecticut has come in to take a look at the team and may be wavering. I think we can all say that the best move was gracefully moving Deleone off to the side.
No question about that. It had to be done. I have seen UConn pick up steam in recruiting in the last week, and it is safe to say that was necessary, too. The Huskies needed some fresh (young) blood in there.
Last minute chance Huskies add the top rated QB in state 2 years running. This is what Paul needs to take his very solid recruiting to the next level which in turn takes the program onward and upward ! Something to be said for steady and experienced in building a foundation and then aprogram.
Wow, a reasonable fan who wants to give a coach time to build!!! What planet did you come from? Seriously, thank you for having a cool head. Not too often we see that around here.
Should a decent amount of talk about our coach being associated with coaches in the super bowl give USF fans even more hope for the future?
I think the amount of talk has gone from decent to off the charts in the last week. Taggart has been profiled in major media outlets across the country. Last time I checked, good media buzz linking you to two Super Bowl coaches can only help.
Greetings from MD Andrea. I am curious how much attention you pay to recruiting between the end of the bowls and spring practice. For us CFB junkies, it helps to both pass the time and find out how well teams restock the cupboards. Do you actually pay attention, or just pass on what the recruiting gurus send you.
Pass on what the recruiting gurus send us. I do not have the time to start watching and evaluating high school game tape, when I still have the blog to maintain on the college teams you guys love so much. That is why I am thankful we have a great division of labor.
When it comes to the Big East stability and the future of realignment, it seems like everything rides on the ACC vs. Maryland lawsuit. Do you think the ACC will fight to the end or do you think they will find the risk of losing the lawsuit too great and settle, despite knowing that if they settle, it sets a president for Clemson/Florida St.?
They should fight to the end, and I think that is the plan. We should know more in a few weeks when the next hearing is scheduled.
do you think at some point the BE could be giving some kind of power spot (maybe not the power 5 semifinal bowls but our own access bowl) if the league can dominate the "group of 5" for a couple years and/or the opposite in which Boise dominates the MWC but beats no one and is ranked highest group of five (on a weak sos), but the big east has 3-4 ranked teams with our teams having better SOS, is their potential that the the BE could get its own access bowl at some point
Not really. I am sure they will start looking at tweaking and changing the selection but these tie-ins with the bowls are pretty much set for years and years. Not sure how the BE would secure itself one even if it has some solid ranked teams.
Looks like Taggart might pull off a top 50 recruiting class at USF. With all his ties to Florida, it was a great advantage, but did you think he could pull it off in so little time? Especially when most of Holtz' class have decommitted.
Yes I did think he could pull it off, given everything I heave heard about Coach T and everything I have read about Coach T. He is a guy who does not play around at all, he came in with a plan and he executed that plan. Knew exactly what he wanted to get done from the moment he arrived.
Tony gets this week's prize for longest run-on sentence!
What has he won?
Hi AA. You are an elite blogger in my opinion. Question: Can any BE team finish in the top 25 recruiting rankings this year?
I love the compliments, thank you :) From what I can tell on the rankings as they are compiled right now, the answer is no.
How about the Big East having a conference alliance with another conference? Maybe it's worth a shot
Not sure there are any takers.
Did you and Matt have to draw straws over who would take the arguement FOR the football teams KEEPING the Big East name...there really isn't an arguement here, there is NO reason that the Basketball schools aren't deserving to keep the "Big East" name, the whole reason for this mess is because the Big East is a basketball conference that had football issues...I can't imagine matt really wanted to take that side of the arguement, it was also a pretty weak one at that...
I will tell him you said that he made a weak argument. AA wins, ding-ding! The Take 2s are fun debates, nothing more than that, and about a 1/3 of the voters did agree with him ...
UCF finally has a chance to make a statement this year, and validate itself as team deserving of some national respect when they travel to Happy Valley to play a team with no QB and significantly less scholarship players...its put up or shut up time don't you think? This is a very winnable game...
Well, UCF fans will tell you that they beat Georgia in a bowl game a few years ago ... but yes, this is a very winnable game and would be absolutely huge for UCF and its rep AND THE BE rep in Year 1 in the BE.
When does syracuse and pitt move on over to the ACC
Who starts at qb for syracuse next year?
Going to guess Loeb but we gotta see how spring ball shakes out.
Who has the better season next year? UCONN or UMASS?
Your thoughts on a raging blog question: If school has 15 spots and fills all 15 with 5 star players, and the other school has 25 spots available and fills them with all 4 star players, who would you say did the best recruiting job?
I don't think we know the answer until 3 years down the line.
Rob - Did somebody from UCF wrong you or break your heart? You really have an issue. Who is Rob's team?
He likes to stir the pot.
Is there nothing to report on Rutgers OC search? Do you know who the potential candidates are?
All I know is interviews are ongoing. Have not heard any names leak out.
Would you pay face value ($850) for a ticket to this year's Super Bowl between the Ravens and 49ers?
No. I like watching from my couch while eating Tostitos.
Developing rivalries is important for the new Big East. Once Louisville leaves, who do you think will be Cincinnati?s next big rival? UConn? Do SMU and Houston have a preexisting rivalry in Conference USA?
All right, get fired up for the Cincinnati-UConn rivalry everyone!
AA, what do you think of this so called deal to play a Home and Away between USF and Old D? Seems like it hurts S.Florida more. In my view since Lee Roy Selmon passed away the number of quality out of conference games has plummeted!
I give it two thumbs down. The last thing BE teams need is to set up a home and home with a program like that.
New conference names for the C-7 BB teams: "the Roman Empire", "Communion of Teams", "Sacraments of Sports"
Or ... Big East?
I hate to sound optimistic but I think that Uconn, Cincy, and USF football are going to be fine now that I don't see the recruits running for the hills with being left behind in the realignment race. I think it just goes back to the fact that NFL scouts will find you know matter where you are. Now if they only will get the chance to play the "big five" and I use that term loosely since many teams in those leagues are worse then what the Big East is going to be comprised of.
Look at how many guys UConn had at the Senior Bowl, that is proof enough right there. Cincinnati had lots of picks last year; USF has had guys in the Super Bowl recently. You can make a name wherever you are.
Do you think all these recruits for pitt will give them a better team next year, or will they get red shirted?
Probably depends on who can play immediately. Won't know that for quite some time.
Is the Big 12 showing it's hand as far as expansion goes by asking to be allowed to hold a conference championship game with only 10 teams? I have to think everyone except Cinci and UConn will be supporting the waiver.
I don't think the Big 12 is showing its hand. I think it wants to see how it goes with 10 and a championship game. I mean they have honestly said expansion was discussed this week so I do not think they are giving away any secrets.
How about a two parter about the Big East?s best future rivalry, USF UCF. 1. Do you have any idea if they will wait for the end of the season to play the game? 2Do you think they should wait till the end of the season to play the game?
I have no idea, and yes I think they should. Would be much juicier that way!
Are you planning on doing a recruiting analysis after next week or someone else for the BE schools. I had heard that RU and UL had the best classes but nothing lately
We will have complete recruiting coverage Weds, Thurs and Friday with analysis from Matt and me and our recruiting folks as well.
Is South Florida the next Boise State if Coach T makes something of these recruiting classes?
Why would you even compare yourself to a non-AQ!
In ranking the programs in the new Big East, where would you put Navy? Can they really compete for conference championships against Cincinnati, UConn, and South Florida?
I worry about Navy to be honest, and I have worried about Navy from the outset. I do not think this program will be able to compete for championship at the outset. Navy, Army and AFA are simply not like the bigger football programs.
Andrea, if the Ed O'Bannon case goes through, and current players are owed a cut of TV revenue, will college sports continue to exist?
Great question, Patrick. I think this is one of the most under reported stories of the week. This court case will have major implications if the players win. I think college sports will exist, but the entire operating model will be changed forever.
With Aresco stating that the BE is looking for a 12th team, who are the potential schools?
Tulsa seems to be the one everyone has talked about lately.
With your coverage of Syracuse as part of the BE blog coming to a close, what will you miss in covering the Orange? What tip/ advice will you give to the ACC blogger about the Orange?
I won't. I also write on the ACC blog!
This just isn't feel right leaving the conference, been a Big East fan for as long as I can remember! Lots of memories! Pitt and our struggles with Uconn,Cinci, rutgers and just about everyone else!
It is all very strange, isn't it?
Do you see the Big East has a safetynet conference where schools can go if there is nowhere else? For instance where would schools like Duke, Wake Forest, Virginia, Iowa State, and Baylor go if their conferences were ever to fail?
I don't think Duke, Wake Forest or Virginia are going to have a problem, Justine. Remember a few years ago we heard about the Big 12 leftovers maybe forming an alliance with the BE. I am not sure I would characterize the BE as a safety net conference. I think it is more like a stepping stone conference.
Are you going to do an 'Off season to-do list' like David Ubben is doing for the Big 12?
If you want us to.
I have heard the push for the UCF/USF game to be on the weekend after Thanksgiving (rivalry weekend). My concerns are that students are generally home that weekend and that until this game gets more tradition, it could get lost in the shuffle, which would be a tremendous shame for the BE. I'm beginning to think it should be held perhaps in early November so that it can possibly get more national exposure.
Until there is a championship game, I have no problem with this one being in the Thursday night slot the final weekend of the regular season.
A while back you explicitly praised Mike Aresco for a job well done, do you have a different opinion about the job he has done now? There still has been no movement on a tv deal (i know, I know he has to know what schools are in the conference, but two football programs have left under his watch), the basketball schools also defected, and there are talks of adding UMass to the recently added Tulane and ECU in place of some of the departed. I'm not saying someone else could have done better but...based on how you judged him (the reasons you cited in your article) a few months ago, you have to have a different opinion now no?
You have to remind me I wrote that, Rob? Seriously two days later everything fell apart again. Yes, I obviously have a different opinion but I am not sure who could have done anything different.
Are you the fastest typer at ESPN? There was a youtube showing of you typing and you were killing it.
That video still exists!
How many DBs does Cincy lose? is there anyone to fill the void?
A lot, Nick. A lot. Major area of need in recruiting. One name to keep an eye on is Trenier Orr.
Who will have more carries for Louisville next season; Dom Brown returning after a redshirt season, or Senorise Perry coming back from his late season knee injury. Both have shown they are capable backs in the past.
Still going with Perry.
Do you think this is a big year for Rob Smith as a defensive coordinator? The guy did have a pretty loaded roster last season, you think having a little less talent will really show us what RU has in him?
Yes absolutely, Jay. I think you could say the same for Kyle Flood as well. He has a lot of doubters out there, and it would go a long way toward shutting them up if he can win with a reloaded roster.
Is it OK if I tell my wife I'm busy and I have to hang up with her because I'm in the middle of the chat?
That is never OK, Scott.
What are the chances of the following regarding Munchie at UC.Transfers out -Changes position -Tries to battle for the QB spot -
My guess is changes position. The guy is too valuable an athlete to let slip away.
Will Louisville's receiving corp finally get the love they deserves next season? Personally and with complete bias I had them as the best group going into last season, but you inexplicably had them as 3rd or 4th best in the conference! There are multiple guys that could be playing on Sundays in this group
Well first of all, I did not have a preseason ranking for position units last year. I think the debate was between Louisville and USF for top group if I am not mistaken. And I think I said USF. Oops. No question Louisville has the best group of receivers in the BE in 2013. And I don't even think it's close.
I'm calling it now, MY Scarlet Knights will FINALLY win their first Big East Conference title in their final year in the league, figuring out their QB mess and upsetting The Lou' while finishing 9-3 (again) and beating Clemson in the Orange Bowl...my bold prediction, also Savon Huggins sets himself apart as the best Running Back in the Big East with 1,300 yards (Rutgers will need to rely more on the run anyway)
Wait you guys won the BE this year, Rob! Hello??!
Next year with Louisville the favorite to win the league, do you feel they are farther ahead of the rest of the BE teams? If not, who has the BEST chance of surplanting them?
Yes I actually do think there is clear separation in 2013 between Louisville and everybody else. I think we may see an outright champ for the first time in quite some time.
what style of defense is UC DC going to run? 4-3 or 3-4?
Greg asked about the receiving corp in relation to the rest of the BE. Any plans to do any rankings by position group of all the teams after you have a chance to evaluate the new ones?
Maybe going into the season but not before. Gotta see how everything shakes out in the spring and get to know these new teams. Still learning about them.
Don't sleep on the RU WR unit Andrea. Coleman, Pratt, Shuler, Caroo, there's a lot of recruiting snowflakes in the group.
Yeah you know what? I thought the RU WR unit was going to be way better in 2012 than it was. Still waiting on these guys to step up. This is where recruiting rankings maybe are deceiving? Of course, they need a QB to get them the ball ...
Ok if I have to be more specific, wins the big east outright, when you tie with an 8-5 Syracuse team there is no glory in that...more specifically we play in our first and probably last, BCS bowl
What, no positive outlook for the Big Ten???
Not so long ago everyone was saying the Big 12 was done, seems they weathered the storm, I still see too much negativity towards BE football. The BE will be just fine.
They weathered the storm for now. If Texas and Oklahoma ever change their minds ...
Is Kentucky potentially the hardest game on the Cards soft schedule next season? I know UC will be up there in difficulty as well but they seem to have a lot of holes to fill. Stoops has been lighting up the recruiting trail unfortunately. Him and Taggert are going after all the same guys as Charlie and co to our detriment.
Yeah I have seen Stoops pick up some recruits. I will always say Kentucky is a tough game on the schedule because it's a rivalry game and anything can happen. It's not going to be as easy as last year, not at all.
Randy Moss had his best season with the best QB he's ever played with......TO exploded when he went from Jeff Garcia to McNabb, Crabtree exploded when they went from Smith to Kap.....there is a trend that Rutgers has to look at. GOOD QBS MAKE WRS BETTER.
Blatantly obvious in the Louisville game.
When do you think Pitt and Syracuse coverage will fully transfer to the ACC blog? I honestly skip most of the posts regarding them.
AA, is it two weeks?
I hear something is happening in two weeks.
FOR THE LAST TIME TWO WEEKS. (Give me an over under on when I get the question again).
You guys are cracking me up!
Sorry, I missed the earlier question. Came in late... Worst student in class right here...
You are Ok, John ... thanks for participating.
I'm positive for the Big Ten. Realistically 2014 looks to be our best shot at doing something in that league.
So tough to handicap out that far.
If Nova has subpar Spring, do you think Flood will be so bold about saying the job is still his in the fall?
I have hopes that the new OC will talk Flood into opening up the competition. I mean if the new OC is going to be calling the plays and running the offense, he's got to go with his guy at QB, right?
Does Addazio's hire at BC help push for UConn and BC to start playing each other? I know pretty much everyone is new in the athletic department up in Boston, so a lot of the grudges should have left with them. I think both schools need this game to happen because it's one game fans can really circle every year.
With the way scheduling is going, I think it is hard to just pencil in a yearly game anymore unless it is already in there. The ACC has tabled a plan to play 8 league games but that could change. I think it would be good if maybe they started with a home-and-home series and take it from there. No question that game should be on the schedule somewhere.
HA and beat mich and osu and mich st? RU fans are dreaming.......
Rutgers fans, just remember Wisconsin really wasn't that good until the 90's. With your recruiting base, why not you?!
How you doubt me Andrea.
Not you, Jay. College football. We have no idea who is going to be coaching or on these teams in 2014!
Who is the best miniature dunker of all time, Spud Webb or Nate Robinson?
agreed ... i am about giving chances, call me premature, but i think the NOVA ship has sailed. Young quality QB's on roster (Rankin, Bimonte).
Why not throw Dodd into the mix again?
Chicken wings or nachos for the Superbowl?
I just see why you guys were giving me a hard time on two weeks! My computer was stalling so I must have hit the submit button 10 times and so then "Two weeks" appeared 10 times. Oops!
Super Bowl Halftime Show, Puppy Bowl, or Lingerie Bowl?
sure why not ??? Jeff Hostettler won the superbowl with an injured Phil Simms, why can't Dodd become the darling of Piscataway (if the chips fall that way)
I mean I appreciate Flood for sticking to his word when he said he was not going to rotate QBs, but seriously, Dodd should have played last year.
If you played college football, what position would you play?
Rivalries drive sports. We get keyed up for Georgetown-'Cuse, Yankees-Red Sox, Duke-Carolina, etc. They generate media exposure, are great for the fans, and bring in loads of dollars to the teams involved (Keep your paws off, O'Bannon!)My question is: what rivalries do you see going forward in the Big East that are going to generate that buzz and keep the league viable?
What so you don't think players should get any cut of $$ the schools are making off these exploding TV rights? Anyway, USF/UCF is the biggest one that the league has going for it right now. Two rising Florida schools, they already despise each other ...
Spud was a great dunker but I think Earl Boykins may have been the best mini player ever. Do you agree?
And then Dodd would have thrown 3095783908467 wide receiver screens just like Nova. God I hated seeing that play so much. Kent State blew it up for an interception for a touchdown. And then we run it another 39479235 times the rest of the season.
I just laughed out loud.
If UConn goes to the spread (which a lot are thinking Weist will do) does Whitmer keep the job or does McCummings get the nod?
What happened to Mr. Cochran?
the top 25 player ranking, are they based on position or just the best overall players?
i think Houston will have a dominant WR core next year, with everyone coming back (including back ups), deonte greenberry (our 5 star freshmen wr recruit) coming alive the end of last season, and aj barker transferring to Houston (nearly doubles every other Minnesota WR's stats despite missing the last 5 games). i honestly believe everyone is underestimating what houston could do its first season in the big east
Is Barker eligible this year? Houston has a lot of talent back, no question about that. I could see a finish in the top half of the league if things go right.
I generally agree that the players are entitled to more dollars, I just am very afraid of the slippery slope. What kind of Pandora's Box is O'Bannon opening here?
Great question, but I think it is one that deserves to be explored.
So if Ray Rice wins a Super Bowl ring. Does that change everyone's opinion of the Big East? I know I know... Wishful thinking...
Cochran is a Pro-style QB and hasn't taken a snap at the college level yet. Whitmer has the experience already so it would make sense to keep him in, but McCumming also has experience in the option through the wildcat plays he ran. Cochran is a good QB, but you gotta go with experience, especially this year.
And I remember UConn fans last year clamoring for him to start!
Also, USF and UCF have been "rising Florida schools" for what, over a decade now? This is the rivalry Aresco & Co are selling to the networks?
Got anything better?
How is going to be the first Big East player drafted this year and how high?
Great question! I think we should know more after the combine. I don't have a good sense for who is going to go where just yet.
yes barker is eligible..the reason he transferred is because Minnesota refused to give him a scholarship, and without a scholarship he can transfer without waiting
OK good to know.
I am having Mike Teel and Ryan Hart flashbacks to those nice 20-30 passes, when receivers would not drop the ball. Call me nostalgic.
If louisville does go undefeated, what are the chances Teddy Bridgewater wins heisman
I think that probably depends on his stats and the other players who are in contention. I think there is a shot he is in NYC if that happens.
All right guys, time for me to wrap up. Great questions and conversation this week! I am sure there will be plenty recruiting on the docket next week. Chat with you then!
