Andrew, Arod's already guilty in the court of public opinion. If he is found gulity of taking the PED' s by MLB and is suspended for 50 games, will the Yankees try to " fire" him hoping he'll agree to a buyout and walk away from baseball?
Bingo. We might as well as start here. I think that is the exact plan, because actually voiding the contract is near impossible
How about if the Yankees, upon ARod's return, simply bench him? No batting practice, no playing time. He just suits up and sits on the end of the bench for the next five years, or until he decides to re-negotiate a new exit plan for The Contract. I think it would hit him in the ego so hard that he'd soon give in and go away.
That is a strategy, but even though there are mixed feelings about A-Rod from players in the game -- some love him, some hate him -- I don't know if the Yankees would want to be seen as a franchise that treats a player that way. Could hurt them long-term.
Andrew, great work. Is the Yankees front office really that confident with this offseason that they can compete for a World Series? Lost power, got older, and now ARod distraction. Where are the positive signs?
Thanks.I think the main area where they would have liked to have done different was at catcher. Cashman and his assistants would have really have liked to have kept Martin for what was a reasonable salary. Are they happy overall? They argue by keeping, Mo, Hiroki, Andy and Ichiro they brought in (really, back) some top of the line players.
What's the Future for the Yankees as far as 3b goes Long Term? Someone through free agency, Trade or In house?
Going to do a blog on that at some point. So check us on ESPNNY.com
If A-Rod is disciplined by MLB and the Yankees do in fact figure out a way to void his contract, will that finally get them under the $189M salary cap? And would that mean the Yankees can go get a free agent or 2 or give them some flexibility for a trade?
If they did the near impossible and were able to void the deal, then it is unclear of the exact luxury cap implications. But if it cleared the deck, it would solve an unlimited amount of problems. For $189M, you can have a big, name Yankee-like roster, but when you are paying a lot of money to guys fading, it obviously becomes much more difficult.
How long do you think MLB's investigation into this Arod mess could take?
Not totally sure. But I think it will take awhile. They definitely call all the players in. And that could be a tipping point for A-Rod. I would figure that would happen relatively soon, maybe by the time the season starts.
Odds A-Rod ever plays another game in pinstripes?
I'd say better he never plays for the Yanks again than he does. However, I wouldn't rule him out.
Andrew, Realistically, is there any chance the Yankees can get out of the contract with Arod?
With all the recent signings the Yankees have made (Canzler, Rivera, Neal, Diaz), who do you think has the best shot of getting regular at-bats versus LHP?
Why didnt the Yankees make a play for justin upton?
Didn't match up. Yankees' high minors don't have big trade chips. Killer B's aren't buzzing at the moment. Plus, the $189M thing was a hinderance.
Who is gonna DH for this team? Is he even on the roster right now?
WEEI in Boston is reporting Yanks are talking with Travis Hafner. He is a name to watch.
The Yankees should have to pay because they were so stupid as to sign that fraud to a contract. A-Rod doesn't deserve it because he's A-Rod, a complete disgrace to the game. Can't that $114 million go to charity?
A-Rod would probably argue charity begins at home.It is a nice thought, though.
Do you see any rookies making a big impact on the upcoming season?
Big blog post on that coming Friday at ESPNNY.comMark Montgomery is the main guy to watch. Strong righty who draws comparison to David Robertson.
Was Miguel Cabrera ever on the Yankees Radar when he and A-rod were free agents at the same time? i believe Miguel was playing 3rd base at the time, wouldnt that had been a smarter and cheaper investment?
Yes, and you are totally right.
Do you think Austin Romine makes the team out of spring training?
No. Triple-A bound with a chance to be up at some point.
Is it safe to say the Yankees anticipate a rotation in 2014 of Sabathia, Pineda, Nova, Banuelos and one other between Phelps,Warren or Hughes if he stays
No, Banuelos will not be in '14 rotation to begin year after missing a full season.Sabathia is really the only sure thing among any of those guys.Pineda needs to comeback from a serious shoulder and the rest have to prove they truly belong.
If Arod does get suspended 50 games or more by MLB would the suspension start in April or whenever he gets healthy and would begin playing around July
I believe -- and I meant to look into this more fully -- he can be on the DL and serve the suspension.
Will the Yankees actually give Ronnier Mustelier a shot or they just gonna go with the winner of the Canzler , Diaz or Rivera battle
He might get a shot at some point. They know he can hit. The big question, I've been told, is his glove.
Who is gonna win the fifth starting pitcher?
Hmm. I like Nova and Phelps.I'll go Phelps, but I might change by the time spring starts.
What is the likelihood that we'll see Gardner shift to center and Granderson move to left? The advanced defensive stats suggest this is a no-brainer.
I think this is very likely.
Andrew,What are probabilities that Yankees can claim A-Rod has career ending injury (hip issues) and use insurance to recoup 85% or so of his contract?
Probably more likely than he plays for them again, but we shall see.
Do you see Granderson somewhere other than the Bronx this season? If so, what are some teams in the mix?
No, I think he'll be a Yankee. I believe they would have traded him earlier if they were going to. I was told they didn't get a lot of bites on him.
Do you consider Brian Cashman to be a top-5 or even top-10 GM? If the answer is no, why shouldn't the Yankees, of all teams, be expected to have one?
Not to duck your question, but I think these are usually subjective.I think for this market, Cashman does a very good job, because it is different because of how the franchise is run, the media and the fans.He knows the game. He has had some good moves and some less than good. He is pretty good.
If the reports are true that the Yankees are close to signing Travis Hafner, what does he bring to the table? If Healthy, do you see having a good chance to make the team out of Spring Training?
I think he could maybe Raul Ibanez DH type.
I'm pretty sure there would be a riot in the stands at Yankee Stadium if Arod ever steps to the plate again. There's no way they can move forward with him. How will this end?
Hopefully, not in an A-Riot.That would be bad.He gets his money and leaves.
Don't see Yanks ever putting Arod back on field. They'll come up with something if not voiding his contract.
Tend to agree, but we will see.
Have we ever seen anything quite like this? A-rod tearfully apologized for taking steroids four years ago, and established a "Redemption" narrative that at least 50% of Yankee fans (if not too many BASEBALL fans) bought into. Now we discover that he wasn't just lying, but lying spectacularly well. This guy may go down as the most hated Yankee of all time.
Palmeiro is sort of similar with wagging finger denial, but this will not endear him. If the story is true, it seems incredibly stupid.
So are the Yankees close to signing Travis Hafner?
Chatting. Will look into it after the chat is over.
The Yankees will not keep both Granderson and Cano with Cano being the best and most logical choice to stay. Is Granderson's stock so low that even if you package him with a starter (Hughes, Nova or Phelps) and prospects, or any other player combination, that teams won't bite?
I think there are teams that would want his 43 homers from the left side, for sure, but there has to be the right fit.He is a free agent after this season so that hurts his value.
is there anyway we can trade A-rod?
Would the Yankees not be better served to have one of their prospect OFs like Melky Mesa or Tyler Austin be the 4th OF this season? They wouldn't have to play them a lot and they would have the advantage of learning from some really good defensive OFs.
Austin ain't ready. Mesa maybe.
Andrew, Throwing Arod aside...What is the deal with the catcher position? Are the Yankees ok with a combo or Cervelli/Stewart? Or are they hoping when Romine gets healthy, he wins the job?
They liked the Stewvelli's defense. They can't really hit that much and with a poorer offense this year that could be evident a lot of nights.
Do you think Nova has a bounce back year and wins the 5th starting spot?
Definitely, possible. He is a guy sabermatrician's hate, but he has a knack for pitching is very good luck.
Do You see the yankees trading Robbu Cano for top level prospects and a good starter
I would doubt it.
Your best estimate of percentage chance the Yankees void A-Rod's contract in some way or another? 10%? Even lower?
Do you think that with the strong buyers that have become involved in the offseason markets, the Yankees are more or less likely to keep Cano and what contract would you estimate would it take to sign him? I am guessing about 8 years and $190m.
Less likely.I think their A-Rod experience might make them wary of giving another 10 year deal to a guy already in his 30s.
Hafner? Great, another left-handed bat. So where does this team get its RH power from?
Diaz, Canzler and DiMaggio
If A-rod is lost for the year whether it be due to suspensions or injury, do you feel Youk can hold up and play as a serviceable third baseman?
Probably not. That is what history -- and probably Bobby V -- would say.
Andrew, I?m not sure if I understand the new rule for FA compensatory picks. Yanks get a sandwich round pick for Swisher and the Tribe loses their second round pick. Was Swish not rated high enough for the Indians to lose a first round pick? What/where?s the cutoff?
Indians were one of the 10 worst teams so they don't lose their first round pick
Does your gut tell you that arod will retire?
If he gets his money, maybe. My gut is unsure.
If the Yankees want to void A-Rod's contract , wouldn't the players union put up a big fight ? Or is PED use an acceptable reason for contract termination?
Let's end where we started.Union would fight hard. They would not want that precedent and it is unlikely to happen.Thank you all for joining in. Sorry to those I didn't get to. Hit me up on Twitter @AndrewMarchand, if you want.Have a good day.
