Hey guys....coming to you live from Las Vegas, where Purple Reign is playing at the Hooters Hotel (!!!). If that weren't enough, there's also UFC 156 tomorrow night. Aldo/Egdar, the quasi-superfight. Lots of great ones underneath, too....Nog/Evans, Bigfoot/Reem, Benavidez/McCall, Maia/Fitch....let's get rolling.
Chuck how much will that terrible ref and judge affect the fight if it goes the distance??
I shudder to think, Dan. Particularly in Frankie's case. Guy has been on the raw end of those scorecards before. Hope whatever happens is definitive enough for the gavels (or it ends before then).
Sup with Vitor? That dude looked ripped against Bisping! He hitting the testosterone hard?
Thought you might notice that, Jason. Yeah, Vitor did look yoked. Rumors everywhere about his failed drug test, but we'll have to wait and see. Not sure if he filed for exemption on testosterone. Details still coming out.
If Rashad Evans beats Lil Nog this weekend, does he get the next crack at Silva at 185? Personally, I'd rather see Weidman.
It seems like Dana White has that fight on his mind. The question is, can Rashad make the weight? I agree with White that a catchweight is meaningless, so he'd need to get down 20 pounds. Will he be the same at that weight? Who knows. I'm with you on Weidman.
Ubereem right to be dismissive of Big Foot? No one seems to give Silva much of a chance.
It's true. Most people think that Reem will sort of walk through Bigfoot. I tend to think so, too. I just remember Cormier flattening him three times in that first round, and then Velasquez pouring it on him not long thereafter. Reem shouldn't be overlooking Bigfoot, but I think it's okay for us to.
After Fitch overpowers Maia tomorrow, does Dana give him a top 5 guy, or continue the hate and throw him another fringe top 10 guy?
Tell you what, if Fitch handles Maia like he did Erick Silva, he might change some notions about his brand of fighting. Fitch hears the criticism. And talking Maia down and working him there actually sets up a very interesting fight. Maia is a magician on the ground. This fight, to me, is awesome.
Jose Aldo vs. Ben Askren. Who wins?
Haven't heard this one before. Hmm....will go with Askren, but only because he's a lot bigger. He'd just need to eat some shots to get to the ground, and then do his Funky thang.
I am a big match-up guy, and I can tell you this: Vinny Magalaes is crazy to call out Phil Davis. That's not a good match-up or Vinny.
I don't disagree with you there. Granted, Magalhaes has been working wrestling, and he's been working on his hands. He's a different fighter from the one who got knocked out by Bader on his season of TUF. But that's audacity to call out one of the division's freakishly strong wrestlers. Maybe he sees something he feels he can exploit....
If Aldo finishes Frankie - is there room for him in the Anderson/JBJ/GSP pantheon?
I think so. I think I have Aldo No. 4 behind those guys you mention on the ESPN Power Rankings. Bottom line is: He dominates everybody he faces. This fight with Frankie will tell us a lot.
Ultimately, do you believe rankings is a good idea by the UFC? I see both pros and cons, but do rankings give the casual fan a fun way to keep track of the divisions.
This is one of those strange things. We all have our own ranking systems, but they don't mean much overall. It's just opinion...or, as Josh Gross rightly describes it, a "snapshot in time." The idea of an "official" rankings is intriguing. Ultimately, it too won't be all that definitive, because there are so many variables to matchmaking. But I guess it's a good launching point.
If Frankie loses on Saturday night, you think he sticks around 145? I think he'd go back to lightweight, which he feels is his home.
I could see this playing out either way. If he loses convincingly to Aldo, maybe he sticks around because there are so good names/fun match-ups in that division. Then again, he does like 155....and if Melendez were to beat Bendo? Maybe he sees his opportunity there. A lot of speculation. And in that vein, maybe he looks at 135 at some point?
Is randy going to fight for bellator?
We are being asked to tune in on FEB 5, when all details will come clear. My guess? No. But with Couture, anything is possible. (Dude's 49 years old! He goes back to the Kennedy admin).
I have been riding the "Aldo is overrated" train for a long time now and it finally comes to fruitition on Saturday. Frankie by 3rd round TKO.
You know, Edgar is one of those guys who just gets it done. Not sure why in contemplation of his fights everybody tends to discount his ability. This is a tough match-up. If he does beat Aldo though? His legacy gets a second chapter.
how do u think ray lewis would do in mma with some training in a good camp
I heard this one a lot about Tim Tebow (whom I could actually envision in MMA). As for Lewis, all that passion would need a some rein-pulling. Fight game is a lot different. Not sure he'd do too well in it (mostly because the late start), but I'd tune in if he did.
Couture v. Prindle is a dream matchup! (sarcasm)
That would be....something.
What up Chuck! How is the JB and Uncle Creepy fight not getting more love? Aside from the main what fight looks like it could be more exciting? Didn't even get a preview from Brokamoto!!!
Not sure. Maybe because the flyweight skybeam was so hot last week in Chicago? I do like this fight. When the four-man tourney was started, this was the fight I was hoping would happen. Mighty Mouse wrecked those ideas (for a while), but I still think this one will be ridiculously good. Question is: Does the winner get Johnson (again)?
Hey Chuck, big fan. Am I the only one who things Nogeuiera beats Evans on Saturday??
Thanks, Ike. Appreciate that. Now, right to your question: Yes. You are the only one who believes Nog wins this.
How do you feel about getting to vote on "Offical UFC" fighter rankings? Excited, confused, indifferent?
Currently indifferent, though I'm intrigued. Not sure who the 90 media are. Maybe they threw that number and concept out there to watch the media turn on each other (on Twitter, it seems to be working). I look at it more like having an "official premise." Even if the rankings say one thing, matchmakers have a tendency to do another.
How great would it be to never hear the terms "PED" and "TRT" again? Sick of it.
Me too. The whole flare-up here in Vegas is the Belfort test. It gets old with a quickness. And what's scary is we're sick of hearing about it (reporting it, blogging about it, bemoaning it, justifying it) and we're only dealing in the ones who've been caught.
I've read that Benavidez isn't interested in another title shot right away, but if he beats Creepy this weekend, who else is out there?
Ricky D, you have no trouble confounding me. I am not sure who's out there right now. Moraga? He's got a nice head of steam, but zero marketability. My guess is, it'll be the winner of Benavidez/McCall (regardless of what Benavidez wants).
Giving Bigfoot any shot against Overeem?
Small one, but ultimately don't like his chances. Too slow in the stand-up, and that's where Overeem loves to spend his time. Could be short work.
Chuck, who do you see winning the Aldo v Edgar fight? What round do you think it goes to?
I think it'll be Aldo early, and Edgar late. But too late. I think he'll win the champ rounds, but lose a decision.
Is Edgar and Aldo really a "superfight"? Edgar has lost twice in a row!
Would it be better to separate it into two words: Super Fight? I think it's a super fight, I really do. But when we say "superfight" I assume we mean two champions clashing with winning streaks that go back to 2006. In that case, no...it's not. But I still think Edgar won the second Bendo fight, so there's that.
Chuck, are you among the 90 journos who'll get to vote on the official rankings?
Have no earthly idea. If they've alerted media about it, I haven't seen anything. In that case, I guess the answer might be "no." But we'll see.
A.Silva must REALLY not want to fight Weidman, he's got Dana talking about Evans dropping weight instead.
It's funny. Silva's camp tossed out some names like Cung Le and Luke Rockhold, guys with "names." But Weidman's name is bigger than Rockhold's (right now), and Cung Le is light years from deserving that shot. My guess is Silva would really rather not fight Weidman, but maybe they can appease him by holding the fight in Brazil. Not a bad time to fight Weidman, who is coming off the injury, etc. If it's going to happen, now seems most advantageous.
Who cares about MMA it's so stupid. Not even a sport!
"It's a sport, but it's not a game." -GSP
Saw a breakdown of Edgar's last six fights... all for titles and against the same guy two times in a row. Will the streak be kept alive? (will he get Aldo twice?)
There are a lot of 145ers with sweating palms right now, because there's always a chance of a rematch when Edgar fights. This particular fight with Aldo could be very interesting as cardio comes into play....so, you know, could get sticky at the end if scorecards become the story.
People are asking if Rashad would drop to fight Anderson. Isn't the real question, would Anderson fight Rashad?
Yes. Yes it is, Rob. Not sure if Silva would view Evans as preferable over Weidman.
Gotta love Frankie's heart (and skills) but Aldo made Faber look average.....he's just at another level with talent and skill.
Eh, they'll tape up their hands and go out and see. I think that Edgar will give Aldo a fight. I'm just not sure he'll do enough to dethrone him.
People act like Suga making 185 is no big deal. Personally, even if I was Suga, I would want to make weight and fight once before getting my one chance against Anderson.
I know that Rashad isn't 100% sure he could get down. That's a big dude. And if he does make it down that far, how does he look? Dropping that much weight can affect fighters. (Don't make me think of the gaunt visage of James Irvin that time....he was a famine on that scale).
(Not that Rashad would look like that...)
what the crap is a kennedy admin?
Something about Tim Kennedy, the Strikeforce guy!
If Aldo beats Edgar, will he move to 155?
Could happen. He's expressed interest in it before. I think he'll stick around and defend the belt some more, because for once there are guys coming up at 145 that could make for good fights. Korean Zombie and Lamas just off the top.
oh, got it. thanks
Glad to clear that up.
Re: Mike in Pitt...only 2 idiot judges think Frankie actually lost 2 in a row. No one else does.
That's true. But it's funny how fast we yield to the idea of a two-fight losing streak once it hardens into something official. He should have won. He didn't. And to his credit he didn't make a big stink about it. Got to love Edgar for moving on (but I can't shake the thought that he won).
How did Clay Guida get the decision last Staurday? Guy never throws a punch anymore.
Undereducated judges? To be fair, it was a close fight. Guida got the takedowns, and he stayed "busy-ish." Problem was, I thought Hioki, off his back, was making Guida dance to his tune. That should count for something. He was fishing for finished throughout. That should also count as something.
Hey chuck! I want your thoughts on the best 155 in the world. I am very dissapointed on the Alvarez decsion, I thought he would have brought that one punch KO power to the UFC's 155 division. What are your thought on how you think Eddie Alvarez would do in the UFC.
He could still end up there, and I really think he'd be right there among the elite. If he has a knock it's that he takes too much punishment to dish it out. He gets wobbled in virtually every fight. Some of the UFC guys at the top may not let him off the hook in those situations.
Chuck, awesome weekend bud. Who would you like to fight a.S. Next besides c.W. And j.B.J ? Thanks !!
If I had my druthers? I'd have him fight Jon Jones. But if we're not sugarcoating here, Silva (and his camp) are growing increasingly finicky. I think he'll end up fighting Weidman after much twisting of arms.
Ravens or Niners?
Going Ravens. Niners are fashionable, but I think that when Denver let the Ravens off the hook they got momentum.
Any thoughts on what Showtime will do in MMA next?
Not sure, but perhaps Invicta?
how nervous should Aldo or Edgar be with Mazzagatti reffing and Adelaide Byrd judging? Could there be any worse combo?
That's one menacing one-two punch. My guess is that Aldo hasn't given it two thoughts, and Edgar rocks back and forth clutching his knees thinking about it. Or, in the very least, he tries not to think about it at all. "It is what it is."
Realize Dana doesn't like putting a guy who lost with a guy who won, but how bout winner of creepy/benavidez vs. Dodson?
That would be fun, but who would fight Demetrious Johnson?
Reffing and Judging doesn't matter when Aldo fights!!
For the record, Frankie did not come close to winning his first fight with Bendo...As for the second fight you could make an argument. As for Saturday, Aldo is on a different level when it comes to striking. I think Frankie is in for a long night. I hate this Frankie fan boys who think he is the greatest.
We'll know more in 30 hours. I think Edgar will definitely give him a fight. But when thinking about it, it's not hard to imagine a scenario where Edgar starts eating some early shots and begins to reel. I don't think Aldo will let him off the hook (like Maynard did) in that situation. Edgar will need to fight smart to hang around.
Hey Bro, your chats are the best because it's the only place I can read MMA talk with a line like "the gaunt visage of James Irvin." Recommend a good sports book for me that has high-end literary style, will ya?
So many. But start with Liebling's "Sweet Science." Joyce Carol Oates on boxing is good....the Mark Kram book "Ghosts of Manila" is awesome. Those are just boxing....but there's a love of the fight game in each.
Chuck, who gets the next crack at the winner of Edgar/Aldo? There are a lot of exciting 145ers that I would like to see match up with whoever has the strap - Korean Zombie, Ricard Lamas, and Pat Curran?
I'd love to see Pat Curran, but that isn't happening anytime soon (and maybe never). I'd give it to Lamas. He beat Koch, who was good enough to book against Aldo twice last year (though neither fight happened). TKZ is coming back from that shoulder, and he could use another fight first.
Hop in your time machine and head to 2015...who are the five biggest stars in the sport based on the current crop of fights?
These are always tough. There could be a guy right now who is just coming along to the UFC who is a world beater. My guess is Jon Jones will still be doing his thing. We'll probably be paying more attention to Rory MacDonald. Daniel Cormier? And, believe it or not, somebody like Gray Maynard. He didn't get it done against Frankie, but I feel like he matches up well with Bendo.
Re mighty mouse: I'd give him moraga. Not sure of that helps/hurts marketability of that division tho.
Yeah, I think he'd be the guy. But nobody outside of the dozens of you in this chat and a few diehards knows who Moraga is. That's the prob right now with the flyweights....
Assuming Johny Hendricks knocks out Jake Ellenberger, who jumps him in line for the next shot at GSP?
I like what we're doing here. If Hendricks knocks out Ellenberger, the most logical guy to bypass him for a title shot is Rory MacDonald. Or....Anderson Silva, if they revisit the idea of the superfight.
Chucky! If Edgar loses, does he go down to 135?
It's not unreasonable. He could make that weight. I think he'd still take another fight at 145 or two. But who knows.
Where do you think TJ Grant falls in the pecking order after his complete aniliation of Wiman? Does he get a top 10 guy? Guy is a beast.
Yeah he is. Man, he made a silent move right up the ranks. Dunham, Wiman...he's a momentum killer. I had him as #10 in my rankings. Thought he might draw Miller next, but looks like Healy and Miller are set. Grant is a beast, though. Looks better each time out. No nonsense there.
What do you think recently of Dana White calling Randy Couture basically an a**hole?
Inevitable. Couture just joined the competitor, and it's not the first time Couture has put business ahead of any "loyalty" to the UFC. White don't like none of that.
What color do you think the gatorade bath will be for the winning team on sunday night?
Do I recognize the Mindenhall voice in your rankings? Who writes the little witty paragraphs for each guy?
Very perceptive, sir. Yes, I write the little capsules. We all vote on the rankings, though.
So....did you participate in the MMA media basketball game? Did you carve some people up?
It's funny how many people knew about this. I did participate on the East team with Jeff Wagenheim, Ariel Helwani and others. We won the first game, and dropped the next two. Okamoto was on the West.
Do you think the UFC will wait until after UFC 158 to give Anderson Silva a match-up? If Hendricks loses on that card, they'd probably make Silva vs. GSP right?
I think, in the end, it'll be Chris Weidman and Silva. That's just the hunch. Evans? Maybe. Don't think GSP/Silva is on the map right now. In that case, GSP is the one who's not interested.
Chuck time for a brew love the chats!!
Usually something about my hats. Also, who would win in a fight between me and FILL IN THE BLANK. (FILL IN THE BLANK is a lot more experienced than me, so obviously I'm dealing in the low-percentage "puncher's chance.")
do you think hioki got robbed last weekend? i thought it was some homecooking for the hometown hero
Robbed is a strong word. I thought Hioki was busier and was presenting the danger. I thought Hioki, but I knew Guida.
Any chance Rory, if he beats Condit, takes the fight with A Silva?
I suppose in this ever-changing world of MMA that that's possible. For one thing, MacDonald doesn't want to fight GSP (yet). But would he have rank enough to cut in front of all the others at 185? Not sure.
Bet Silva would like that fight, though.
Do all the MMA writers get along? Is there a kliq? Are there guys you try to avoid?
For the most part people get along. There were some heated moments on the Tarkanian basketball court today, though...
maybe robbed is too strong of a word but one judge scored it 30-27 cmon man!
That was ridiculous.
If you're the one that writes the capsules in the rankings, then who's the guy that regularly screws up the vote counts and gives votes to guys that don't exist in a weight class (the wrong Nogeira) or at all (one time I think a Hector Munoz got a vote in the MW division pushing Mark down a few ranks for no apparent reason).
Good question. I will have to check into that. I have noticed some strange things within the system. Will alert admin.
Chance the Maia/Fitch fight turns into a lot of striking/stand up?
Could happen. I think both guy wants to do it the way they are comfortable. Maia has been a wrecker at 170 pounds. Fitch loves dictating tempo/will and grinding. Both were exciting in their last fight. Won't be surprised if they stand in front of each other.
Fishing season opened for you yet?
Not yet. Need to hit the ice at Blue Mesa in Colorado, though. That will kick things off. Big Macs.
How about somebody like Mousasi vs Spyda? 2 great strikers
Mousasi can definitely fight at that weight, and that would be a fun fight. But Mousasi is fighting Gustafsson next, so maybe down the line...
For the real-record, if the judges had gotten it right then Frankie would have lost his first fight against BJ Penn and never become champ in the first place.
Another close fight. You see how Frankie do? Always close. Always controversial.
How much do you buy into Cyborg's reports that she can't make 135 in a healthy way? (I don't think the UFC want that fight anywhere besides 135)
I think part of Dana White airing that sort of thing is just to light a fire under her. She might be reluctant (and reluctant for reasons besides just the weight cut), but ultimately White is plodding her. That's the fight they want.
If Silva won't fight Weidman, I for one would love to see what Jacare could do with him.......
You know what? Josh Gross would agree. Jacare is a lot of reptile for any man.
how can i get a hold of overeem within the next 2 days?
When are we going to see a light heavyweight contender actually deserving of a fight against Jones.
Hopefully with winner of Hendo/Machida. If Hendo wins, no way he hasn't deserved that shot. (Once there, the trick is staying out of hard sparring sessions with Sokoudjou).
Alright guys, I need to close this thing down and head over to weigh-ins. Thanks for hopping on here today. Hit my Twitter feed @ChuckMindenhall, and enjoy the fights.
