Chat with Dan Graziano

Dan Graziano
  (3:00 PM)

Hello and welcome to our relocated Friday chat. I am coming at you live from the absolutely ridiculous media room at Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans, and I am here to take your questions.

Chris (Canada)

I'm very interested in Alex Smith to the Eagles, since Chip Kelly has mentioned how important it is for a QB not to take sacks and just make the smart decision (the opposite of Vick), do you think the 49ers release or trade him? Would Reid in KC be the favorite to land him?

Dan Graziano
  (3:01 PM)

I expect the 49ers to first explore the idea of trading Smith. If there is more than one team interested (as I expect there will be), then they should be able to get something in exchange, which is preferable to releasing him. He makes a ton of sense in Kansas City and Cleveland and Arizona and Jacksonville, and I believe the Eagles will have competition for him. Can't pick a favorite, but he would seem to make sense for Andy.

HogHunter (Hamburg, PA)

With the Redskins cap situation, which position do you expect them to address through free agency?

Dan Graziano
  (3:02 PM)

Safety.

Stan (Delaware)

John Mara is saying there is a "limit" to the amount the Giants will pay Cruz and that if they "can't make anything work" that they will wish him "good luck." Is this a negotiation tactic or is there a deeper meaning here?

Dan Graziano
  (3:03 PM)

Yeah, at this point it's all just posturing, on both sides of this, because they're not up against any kind of significant deadline. But in general, the Giants do decide on a number for a player's value and are perfectly willing to let him walk if he doesn't like it. That's for down the road, but it's obviously possible than Cruz will ask for more than the Giants want to pay him and he'll leave for somewhere else. But as Mara said, it's really a 2014 concern.

Didier (New York)

Enjoy the weather in NO this week. Next year in NYC, you might get lucky if it gets above 32 degrees. Its a balmy 30 degree right now.

Dan Graziano
  (3:04 PM)

As I think most people know, I do not like the idea of the NY/NJ Super Bowl at all. And I live there.

Chris L (EPTX)

Hey Dan, enjoying yourself down there? Just wanted to see if you agree with Aikman's comments about the Cowboys drafting a QB this year. It makes sense, they picked up McGee a couple of years ago with the "let's groom this guy" mentality. If so, who do you think would make a nice fit behind Romo and Orton?

Dan Graziano
  (3:05 PM)

I think that, given their cap issues, the Cowboys are going to have to think about using their early and mid-round picks to help their 2013 team. Now, if a QB they like falls to the right spot and they decide there's value, sure. But I don't think developmental QB needs to be one of their 2013 draft priorities, no.

Joe [via mobile]

You probably don't want to answer many draft questions until at least after the Superbowl, so I'll go easy on you. If you were Jones/Garrett would you take DL, OL, or S in the first round (assuming they were equally skilled)?

Dan Graziano
  (3:06 PM)

A couple of weeks ago, I'd have said OL. But with this switch to a 4-3 defense, and if they can't fit Spencer under the cap, a D lineman may turn out to be more important.

Dez Bryants PR Advisor (Dallas, TX)

Has Jerry Jones officially removed Garrett's right testicle would you say?

Dan Graziano
  (3:07 PM)

I would, personally, not say that, but I can certainly understand the point you're trying to make.

Pascal [via mobile]

In your professional OPINION, do you think RG III will be bac in time for the start of the season? And if not, how many games do you think he'll miss. Thanks Dan.

Dan Graziano
  (3:07 PM)

I'd be surprised if he's back in time for Week 1, given everything I've learned about the injury. I'm not betting against him. He's a remarkable guy and capable of anything. But you asked for my opinion, and I'd be surprised.

Mark (UD)

Go Flacco! Why is Osi coming out and saying that there is a good possibility he will be back with the Giants? After the past 4-5 years I figured he would be leaving tire marks on the way out of town.

Dan Graziano
  (3:08 PM)

I don't think that's exactly what he said, but the reason he's leaving it open as a possibility is that it'd be foolish not to. He's a free agent. Why close any door at all?

John (Delaware)

What are the chances London Fletcher retires next year? Are there any veteran free agents at middle linebacker who could fill his shoes or would Perry Riley be able to step up as far as adjusting the defense on the field?

Dan Graziano
  (3:09 PM)

Riley is the heir apparent, and he looks like a good one. And the Robinson kid they drafted last year was drafted with the idea of someday playing inside once Fletcher was gone. I'm thinking he comes back, but he says he's undecided.

Phil (West Palm Beach )

Hey Dan, What do you hear about the Eagles signing Dennis Dixon?

Dan Graziano
  (3:10 PM)

Speculation, but sensible speculation.

Frankie D Wisconsin [via mobile]

So am I the first to ask you when Gruden accepts the Cowboy head coach position that "isn't" open??

Dan Graziano
  (3:10 PM)

If you really think Gruden is going to coach the 2013 Cowboys, I'd like to play poker against you.

Cambro (Lebanon, PA)

With all the talk about the Eagles possibly moving to a 3-4 front, no one has written about how this move is actually counter cultural. A lot of teams have either switched to a multiple defense or 4-3 the past few years (Pats, Cowboys, Cleveland, Buffalo, with other teams to note as well). The cold truth is that there is a drought of serviceable outside 3-4 linebackers and good nose tackles in the NFL because they must be athletic freaks for it to work to excellence. How do you see Philadelphia possibly addressing this problem?

Dan Graziano
  (3:11 PM)

There are some good NT prospects at the top of the draft, and they are picking 4th.

Phil (West Palm Beach )

Hello Dan, What are you feelings about the imposter who has been posting on the blog today using your name and picture?

Dan Graziano
  (3:11 PM)

I hope he or she is having fun.

Dan Graziano
  (3:12 PM)

But I have not been in the comments at all today, so anyone in there claiming to be me is not.

Matt (PA)

Any talk of Rob Ryan to the Eagles? Do you see a fit, his dad was pretty successful there and they want to switch to 3-4.

Dan Graziano
  (3:12 PM)

No, I think they're going to hire one of the defensive coaches from Baltimore or San Francisco after the Super Bowl is over. That's my current hunch.

Jay (NJ)

I know its a football chat but I would love to hear your thoughts on Arod.

Dan Graziano
  (3:13 PM)

I was writing baseball for the Star-Ledger at the time he signed this contract. I was opposed to it very strongly at the time. That was a first-guess, not a second-guess.

Frankie D Wisconsin [via mobile]

No I'm talking 2014. Jerrah has to give his red headed adopted son one last chance!

Dan Graziano
  (3:14 PM)

The idea that Jerry is assembling Gruden-friendly coaches with an eye on hiring Gruden for 2014 is, at best, flawed. What if Garrett wins 12 games this year? Can't fire him after that. I think people are connecting the dots they want to connect.

Phil (Hauppauge)

Pierce says Coughlin constantly pushing motivational buttons from day one the reason Giants usually burn out. Agree?

Dan Graziano
  (3:15 PM)

I think that's ridiculous. Coughlin pushing motivational buttons last year was what got them off their butts and won them a Super Bowl. Not Coughlin's fault his guys aren't self-starters. And we've seen what happens when the Giants don't have motivation. He's supposed to let them all sulk around?

Tanner [via mobile]

If William Moore, Jairus Byrd, and Ed Reed all become available in free agency, who do you think the Redskins would target first? Thanks

Dan Graziano
  (3:15 PM)

Byrd is, I think, by far the best of that group.

Stan (Delaware)

Follow Up to the Cruz Question: Do you think the Giants and Cruz will work a contract out this offseason or will he be tendered. If he is tendered will be then proceed to holdout during preseason?

Dan Graziano
  (3:15 PM)

I think they get it done.

Frankie D Wisconsin [via mobile]

So it was a disappointing year for the Cowboys but can I say how proud Cowboy Nation is of Jason Witten and his Walter Payton man of the year nomination!!

Dan Graziano
  (3:16 PM)

Yeah, I wrote on Witten the other day. Love his charity work. Real, difference-making effort, not just money.

Dan Graziano
  (3:16 PM)

And yes, I know others do that too.

Matt (Spuyten Duyvil)

Hi Dan. Being a shamefully obsessive Skins' fan for almost 40 years, I am nevertheless ashamed of their moniker. Here's a proposal that I bet even Dan Snyder would go for... He changes the name, the NFL (and the organization) get great PR, and the Skins get their stolen cap money back.

Dan Graziano
  (3:17 PM)

Ha. Not bad, but that money's not coming back.

John (Los Angeles)

To placate the vocal minority of angry old white men who furiously whip themselves into a frenzy of over any suggestion of changing a team's nickname, how about renaming WDC's NFL team the Washington Trolls?

Dan Graziano
  (3:18 PM)

Honestly, right? How can it really be that important to people?

John (NYC)

Jerry Jones -- 100% Al Davis yet? Or are still in the 70-80% range?

Dan Graziano
  (3:18 PM)

This is his Al Davis-est offseason in a while, but it's a heck of an impression.

Danny (East Rutherford)

Just imagine if the Super Bowl in New York goes well that they begin to have it in New England, Green Bay, or Denver?

Dan Graziano
  (3:20 PM)

Goodell addressed this today and indicated that yes, this is indeed possible. Which is of course completely the opposite of what the league said when it awarded the game to NY/NJ. At that time, they insisted it would be a one-time deal. They are not truth-tellers.

Joe [via mobile]

Do you think the Cowboys should/will resign Romo this offseason to free up cap space?

Dan Graziano
  (3:20 PM)

Yes.

Nic [via mobile]

Time for some ROY debate. As a Redskins fan, I'm obviously biased towards RG3. But that doesn't mean I'm wrong. The reason I pick RG3 is because out of the top 3 candidates, his was absolutely the most consistent. His lows were not very low at all, but his highs were very high. Neither Luck, nor Wilson had a 3-game span where they played as well as RG3 did against DIVISIONAL opponents. And two games on national tv. Thoughts?

Dan Graziano
  (3:20 PM)

Your points are all good. He is one of three rookie QBs with a very strong case.

Beast Curse (Voodoo Shop in New Orleans)

Dan,You have yet to address the phenomenon currently known to be the "beast curse". In short, the team finishing first in the division nose dives the following year.Do you see the Redskins as having a chance or likelihood to do so this year? Be careful, or we'll take your non-belief out on the redskins even more than usual... (see philly eagles)

Dan Graziano
  (3:21 PM)

Other than the AFC East, in which division does this not happen in some form? It is odd, though, that each of the NFC East's teams has won the division once in each of the last four years. I'll give you that.

Howie Roseman (Eagles draft board)

I enjoy putting you in the GM seat Dan. Since you've taken over from that "dallas guy" you've been fairly sensible. So picking at 4 - Do you have any problem with me pursuing a trade with the St. Louis Rams for their 2 1st round picks and a 3rd for our pick at 4?

Dan Graziano
  (3:23 PM)

Not in theory, no, but my preference for the Eagles would be to draft a franchise-caliber tackle or an impact nose tackle (assuming they go 3-4) with that No. 4 pick. You don't get too many chances to draft in the top 5. Those can be franchise-changing players.

John (Florida)

Dan, Being in New Orleans and the nice weather this your. Do you feel the cold weather is going to effect the festivities leading up to the SB next season?

Dan Graziano
  (3:23 PM)

I can't predict the weather or the future. My point when I criticize this idea is that, by having it there, they increase the chances of the week being a mess. And I don't know why they want to do that.

Dan Graziano
  (3:24 PM)

Actually, that's not true. I know exactly why they're having the game there, and it's not for any reason any of them have ever said. Mr. Mara build a stadium, Mr. Mara gets a Super Bowl.

Jason [via mobile]

How is your day going Dan?

Dan Graziano
  (3:25 PM)

I'm living the dream, Jason. I'm in New Orleans for the Super Bowl, and have been since Sunday night. Fantastic.

Robert [via mobile]

How many questions have you been getting today? More or less than usual?

Dan Graziano
  (3:28 PM)

Many, many less.

Mark (Jerzy)

I recently caught a replay of the Giants SB last year on NFLN. After 3 plays I became amazed at the velocity each ball Eli through had. I realized that all the talk about a "tired arm" might have been true during the season. Have you heard anything about that issue since the season ended?

Dan Graziano
  (3:29 PM)

No, I haven't. But I think it's clear that Eli threw the ball much better and more accurately in 2011 than he did in 2012. Is there an underlying physical reason for that? Possible, but I can't speculate about that. Basically, guys don't have career years every year.

Jill (New York)

Dan, I saw somewhere that an NFC East team could be in the Giants locker room and the Patriots could be in the Jets locker room for next years SB. What's your opinion on that?

Dan Graziano
  (3:31 PM)

Yes, the NFC champion will use the Giants' team facility and the AFC champion will use the Jets' team facility. The Giants and Jets petitioned to have that switched, but were denied. My personal opinion is that it will not matter. The 49ers are using the Saints' facility here. The Patriots used the Colts' facility last year. (And if the Patriots didn't try anything, amirite???) I don't think there's any issue here.

Matt (Rhode Island Eagles)

Is Trent Cole potentially the one of the many odd men out if the defense switches to a 3 - 4?

Dan Graziano
  (3:31 PM)

Potentially, yes.

Willow (Southside)

Looks like Hester might be on the outs in Chicago, is there a market out there for him?

Dan Graziano
  (3:35 PM)

Yeah. I would think so.

The NFC East fans (shivering in the northeast)

we are happy for your assignment to the big easy, Dan. Just think, writing a blog for those negative, bitter, shallow fans from philly could have such incredible perks?

Dan Graziano
  (3:35 PM)

No one's more appreciative than I am of all you guys do for me!

Indy (Anna)

How many Super Bowls have you attended and what is you most memorable non-football related experience.

Dan Graziano
  (3:36 PM)

This is my fifth Super Bowl. (Remember, I was originally a baseball writer.) As for non-football, I'm not real exciting. I don't go to the parties or anything like that. This is a work trip for me, and I'll hang out with old friends for dinner and maybe a drink at night. But when I was doing video work for AOL FanHouse, we had a radio row setup, and I did interviews with some of the celebs that come by all the time. (cont'd)

Dan Graziano
  (3:37 PM)

The most memorable one was in Dallas in 2011, when I did a standup interview with Mike "The Situation" from Jersey Shore. I never watched a second of the show, but as we were getting ready to go on camera and he and I were talking, a gigantic crowd was amassing behind our cameraman to take pictures of him. He of course was used to this by now, and his mind was otherwise occupied. (cont'd)

Dan Graziano
  (3:39 PM)

He was looking at the booth next to us. (I think it was Yahoo! or someone like that.) He pointed to a pretty blonde and said, "Who's that? She's kind of cute." I said, "That's Brooklyn Decker, SI swimsuit model and movie star. You're on a pretty good roll if you think she's just 'pretty cute.'" And he laughed and said, "Yeah, man, I guess I am."

Chris (Canada)

Who in your opinion is the better candidate for the Eagles DC position Monachino or Donatell

Dan Graziano
  (3:39 PM)

I don't know about better, because I don't know their resumes well enough. But the name I hear as most likely is Monachino.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will win Super Bowl XLVII?

Dan Graziano
  (3:39 PM)

I think the 49ers will win.

The Raging Cajun (trying to pick out the best restaurant)

By now we hope you've tried more than room service. How about giving the fans from the northeast some recommendations for good N'oleans cuisine? What restaurants do you personally recommend?

Dan Graziano
  (3:40 PM)

I have had dinners here at Nola, Dickie Brennan's and Commanders Palace this week. Commander's was my favorite, but man, make sure you wear a belt you can let out a little bit.

John (NY)

Do you ever pass on questions here because the people you cover might not appreciate your answer?

Dan Graziano
  (3:42 PM)

That's a very good question. I think the answer is no. I certainly pass up questions that are offensive in nature because I don't want them on the site. But in terms of whether I'd shy away from being critical of someone in an answer and therefore choose not to provide one, I hope not. I can't think of a time when I did that.

Tony (Pittsburgh)

I'm sure your view on The Situation changed if you saw the Donald Trump Roast. My goodness that was painful to watch, nobody has gotten booed like that at a Roast before.

Dan Graziano
  (3:43 PM)

Again, I have no "view" on the young man. I do not know his work. I had that one funny exchange with him and I tell the story sometimes because people think it's amusing. I was stunned by the attention he got.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

How Many NFC East Teams Made the Super Bowl Since you have Covered the Super Bowl?

Dan Graziano
  (3:44 PM)

I helped cover the Giants-Ravens Super Bowl 12 years ago when I was with the Star-Ledger, and I have covered the last four including this one. Only the Giants last year from the NFC East.

wolverine (NoVA)

Dan the Eagles aren't officially commenting on any coordinators until the entire staff is assembled. As a fan I find this extremely annoying. As a member of the media, how does it strike you?

Dan Graziano
  (3:45 PM)

It strikes me as predictable. I think people are going to be amazed how much less info about the Eagles gets out now than did for the previous 14 years.

Tom Coughlin (getting ready to pack my bags)

I know lots of folks wrote about "we'll never question Tom Coughlin's tenure as head coach of the NY Giants". But realistically... do you think I can survive another late season slide before the papers start calling for me to be fired, again?

Dan Graziano
  (3:46 PM)

No, I'm sure if the Giants have a bad year someone will write that. But I don't think the team feels that way, and that's what ultimately matters.

Uncle DJ (The Comments Section)

Do you see every comment that comes through here that isn't posted? Because if so, it has to be pretty damn funny.

Dan Graziano
  (3:47 PM)

Yes. And yes, it is.

Dan Graziano
  (3:48 PM)

For example:

Nick (Miami Beach)

NON-FOOTBALL QUESTION TO ANNOY OTHERS: Would you rather wake up and find a cockroach suckling at your tear duct for moisture or two rats mating on your bare stomach?

Dan Graziano
  (3:48 PM)

For what it's worth, I sleep with a shirt on.

Mike Jones (The Hills of Short, NJ)

Whats your favorit prop bet this year? Mine is the over under on constant physical contact between the Har-Bro's after the game. I believe the over under is 7.5 seconds.

Dan Graziano
  (3:49 PM)

That's a good one. And honestly, I know it's been beaten into the ground, but it's really pretty darn incredible that two brothers are coaching against each other in the Super Bowl, right?

Mike Hunt (Washington)

Hi Dan, Is there any talk in New Orleans about the replacement refs and how the playoffs changed because of calls by they made or has that issue been forgotten?

Dan Graziano
  (3:49 PM)

Forgotten

Rich (Philly)

Dan, do you like the idea of Philly maybe moving to a 3-4? Here, in Philly we're not exactly known for our patience. While i expect it to take a couple years to be able to turn everything around here, I feel like adding yet another complicated change may be biting off more than Kelly can chew.

Dan Graziano
  (3:50 PM)

I do not like the change for the current Eagles. I think their personnel is ill suited for it and they will struggle. If it helps long-term, and Kelly gets the time to make it work, then obviously good for him. But I do not think it's the right thing for them to do with their 2013 roster.

Ray Finkle (Miami)

I am not that impressed that the 2 brothers are coaching against each other. I WOULD be impressed if they were conjoined twins and were coaching against each other

Dan Graziano
  (3:50 PM)

Great point.

MA (NYC)

Do you expect the Giants to be aggressive in trying to bring back their own free agents? Kenny Phillips, Will Beatty, and Kevin Boothe have all contributed to this team in big spots.

Dan Graziano
  (3:52 PM)

I expect the Giants to be measured, as always. They will set their value for those players and try to get them to stay, but they won't break the bank for any of them. It works in their favor that none of those guys looks poised for a huge free-agent payday. Phillips maybe, but the injuries he had this year have to have damaged his market value.

Perd (Delaware)

I am not an Eagles fan but I have to ask...Chip Kelly said he is going to adjust his offense to fit into the NFL. However, there are rumors about him wanting Dennis Dixon to QB for him. This smells of trying to force his college system into the NFL. I seem to remember Steve Spurrier doing this and how did that end up for him?

Dan Graziano
  (3:53 PM)

Your concern is valid, but we don't know what they have in mind for Dixon. If he's a backup QB, or for certain packages, then why not bring him in if he's a guy you know you like? Dixon as the starter would be a concern, I would think.

Jed (Milwaukee)

Did people make to much of the Super Bowl in Dallas and how the weather wasn't perfect that week and the ticket situation? That stadium is the nicest stadium in the league and Dallas is a great city to have sporting events in.

Dan Graziano
  (3:55 PM)

I was there, and people did NOT make too much of it. The ice storm hit Tuesday morning and roads were still coated in ice as late as Friday night. The area's inability to get rid of the ice crippled the entire week. If you owned a restaurant in that town, you were expecting the greatest week of your life and you got hosed. People couldn't get into town. Once they got there, they couldn't get around town. It was extremely unpleasant. But you are right about the stadium, and I have nothing against Dallas per se as a host. I think the people there did what they could to make us feel welcome, but there was for some reason nothing they could do about the ice.

Uncle DJ (The Comments Section)

The Eagles are going to sign Brandon Albert, Dawyne Bowe, Jairus Byrd, Joe Thomas and the best free agent corner, draft Lutuleilei, seamlessly switch to a 3-4 and go undefeated next year...WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Dan Graziano
  (3:56 PM)

Jeez. Then I need to get some rest.

MA (NYC)

If you were a GM and you could have one QB in the NFC East for the next 3 years, who would it be?

Dan Graziano
  (3:57 PM)

Because of RG III's knee and the possibility that he wouldn't be able to play a full 2013 season for me, I'd take Eli Manning.

Jason (Del-a-where)

I enjoyed your chat today. Your answers were more in-depth than usual and the questions you chose were pretty good for this time of year. Have a great day and enjoy your SB experience.

Dan Graziano
  (3:57 PM)

Thanks. Maybe we should switch the chat to Fridays for good!

Martin (New York)

Which players from the NFC East have you run into this week in New Orleans?

Dan Graziano
  (3:58 PM)

I have personally seen Eli Manning, Jason Witten, Justin Tuck, Victor Cruz, Osi Umenyiora... Not sure of any others. I know London Fletcher has been around and I think I saw that DeSean Jackson was coming.

John (Florida)

Hey Dan, I'm biased so I feel the best place to host a SB is Miami. Can you name the top 3 or 4 City's you would like to see host the SB?

Dan Graziano
  (3:59 PM)

I think they should have it on a permanent three-city rotation between New Orleans, Miami and San Diego. Maybe Arizona if you want to make it four.

Joe [via mobile]

Isn't Demarcus Ware down there?

Dan Graziano
  (3:59 PM)

Certainly possible. The whole world is here. Miss America just walked by wearing a crown.

Ray Finkle (Miami)

Do you think the NFL would ever consider a Super Bowl in London? Or would the fans and players be after Goddell with pitch forks and torches?

Dan Graziano
  (4:00 PM)

I think the NFL would love to do that, and probably will someday.

Dan Graziano
  (4:00 PM)

Enjoyed it, folks. Thanks for the questions. Enjoy your Super Bowl parties.
