Chat with Myron Medcalf

Myron Medcalf
  (2:02 PM)

Hello all ... sorry I'm a little late ... let's go

Josh (N.C)

Sure, Trey Burke had 25 points against Indiana but shouldn't he have moved the ball around a little more? I believe Michigan could have beat Indiana if he wouldn't have taken so many bad shots. He had 25 points on 24 shots.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:03 PM)

I think Burke tried to move the ball around but Indiana did a great job of limiting his passing lanes. ... That turned the game. But GRIII and Co. missed some key shots. I think Burke did what an All-American should do. He tried to dig his team out of a hole.

Tyler Morrison (Minneapolis, MN)

How far do you think the Gophers can go in the Tourney?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:04 PM)

I don't think we're there yet. They haven't looked good in weeks. Let's see where they are on Selection Sunday. ... One 3-pointer in the final seconds didn't change my mind about them.

Andy W. (Bloomington, IN)

No. 1 Indiana vs. No. 2 Florida on a neutral court. Who wins?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:06 PM)

I'm going to take Florida. The Gators are so balanced and versatile offensively. ... I know. Indiana has similar attributes. But I think the Gators are really tough team to defend because of their speed in the backcourt. And 6-10 Erik Murphy would be a matchup problem with his range..... But the Hoosiers would be tough too. Florida 93, Indiana 92 in double OT.

Zack (Tampa)

Hey Myron! I sure am impressed with the way my Gators are playing on both sides of the ball. My only concern right now is worrying that they won't be challenged enough come tournament time. Do you think that's a valid concern or does this team have enough experience to negate that?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:09 PM)

I think that's always a concern with a team that's so far ahead of everyone else in its league. See: Gonzaga. What will happen when Florida sees a Michigan State or a team like Arizona again? How will Gators respond? ... But they're one of the most efficient teams in the country. They're playing the best basketball in America. Final Four team IMO.

ReleventMatt (NYC)

When will Memphis(18-3, 7-0 C-USA) get the respect they deserve and be ranked? I think they are a top 25 team easy..

Myron Medcalf
  (2:10 PM)

Define "easy"? Tigers had a chance to earn respect but they blew a big lead against Louisville at home. Lost to VCU, Minnesota ... and now they're beating up CUSA squads. I can't say they're a top-25 team right now.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:10 PM)

Evan (Boston)

Is Nerlens Noel a skinny dwight howard?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:11 PM)

I actually think Dwight was more polished offensively than Noel is right now. And Dwight wasn't very polished. But Noel will get big money to block shots. Just not sure how he scores at the next level with such a limited game.

Jpizzle8049 (Missouri)

How in the world are we still ranked??

Myron Medcalf
  (2:13 PM)

Can't figure it out. But I am actively investigating. My guess is that folks saw the Auburn win and figured that the Tigers had all of their pieces (Keion Bell didn't play during LSU loss)and now they're going to fulfill their potential. But they beat Auburn and lost to LSU. Let's hold on for a week or two to see what happens with this team. I'm not convinced that they're top-25.

Chris (Fredonia, NY)

Hy Myron. Would getting Southerland and/or Coleman back in time for the Madness restore Syracuse to Elite Eight/Final Four potential?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:16 PM)

Southerland is more important than Coleman. Cuse needs him. They need his range. They need the extra lengthy defender. Coleman boosts the bench. ... I think we've watched a very uncomfortable Michael Carter-Williams in these last two games. He's not flowing the way he did earlier this month. And I think Southerland's absence is a component in that. He's forcing shots because he has few options. ... Cuse can still make a run without those guys. But a complete Cuse squad is definitely a FF contender.

Brett (St. Louis)

How do you see the A10 playing out?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:17 PM)

No one knows, Brett. No one. I'd finally figured it out and then .... Saint Louis smashed Butler. Now I'm all confused again.

Matt Kamenitz (NYC)

Isnt Southerland ruled out for year?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:18 PM)

He's been out with academic issues but he's appealing the ruling.

Evan (Boston)

Do any of the Kentucky freshmen stay in school?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:20 PM)

This year's group? Why would they? One of the most talented recruiting classes of all-time might be on its way to Lexington this summer. If I'm Cauley-Stein, Poythress and Noel ... I leave now. For sure. Goodwin too. No reason to stay if you're those guys. Time to get paid.

Uncle Drew (Cleveland)

Trey Burke, sophomore at Michigan vs. Kyrie Irving, from his healthy freshman time at DUKE. Who you taking?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:21 PM)

Well, Kyrie Irving is one of the best young guards in the league right now ... so I'll go with Irving. They're different players. Burke will be more of a true point guard than the playmaker that Irving was at Duke and evolved into once he reached The Show.

Kyle (Bloomington)

Why is no one talking about Robinson III's punch? He should get suspended. No place for that.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:22 PM)

I saw the video. I'm not convinced that it was a punch. I watched it 50 times. Christian Watford may have pushed GRIII into Hulls. Watch it again. I'm not saying that it wasn't a punch. But I can't confirm it either way. Not sure how anyone else could, either.

Ken (Wichita, KS)

Best team in Kansas?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:25 PM)

Kansas. I'm not going into Panic Mode because the Jayhawks lost to an Oklahoma State team that played ridiculous basketball at Allen Fieldhouse. Yes, Kansas has point guard problems. Had them last year, too. What's new? Still one of America's best teams. ... I just think someone needs to sit down with Ben McLemore and let him know that "takeover mode" is required, not only expected. He's so good. And I felt like he waited too long to put on his cape in that game. But a great player, really good team.

Larry (DC)

Chances of an IU let down Thursday night in Champaign?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:26 PM)

I wouldn't be too worried about Champaign. Columbus? That's a different discussion.

mat (Colorado Springs)

what do you have to see to think mizzou is legit this year?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:27 PM)

This team .... now that everyone is available ... has to do more than crush Auburn. The Tigers have chemistry issues, ballhandling issues ... and they haven't stepped up in big moments. ... Oh, and they just lost to LSU, which loss to SEC's worst teams before that game.

Steve (St. Louis)

So how can a team look like worldbeaters to start the season and then be 2-7 in the Big Ten halfway through? My Illini drive me crazy.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:28 PM)

If the Illini loved D (96th in adjusted defensive efficiency per Ken Pomeroy) as much they loved the 3-ball, they'd be a contender.

Colin (France)

Who's the best team in Tennessee?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:29 PM)

1. Belmont 2. Middle Tennessee State 3. Memphis 4. Tennessee 5. Vandy

Andy W. (Bloomington, IN)

Does Victor Oladipo deserve to at least be in the conversation for Big Ten/National/Defensive POY?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:30 PM)

He's not in the conversation, he's at the table sitting next to McLemore, McDermott and Burke. He's seriously in contention for every award. He might be the best player in the country. Probably its best defender. Most improved? Yep.

Jamie Dixon (Pittsburgh)

Hey Myron! My young team struggled early on finding the correct rotation and chemistry. After a big win against Syracuse, do you think PITT is back to being an elite program that can contend for a Final 4/ Elite 8?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:32 PM)

I think Pitt was already a Big East contender before the Cuse win. But the victory allowed the Panthers to showcase their depth. ... Here's what I look for with any contender. How will they adjust in tough situations? Pitt missed its first 6 3-pointers. So it attacked the zone to find points and it worked. Too early to talk Elite Eight/Final Four ... But I like their potential, depth and tenacity.

Wren (Toledo)

Who do you like in the MAC this season?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:33 PM)

Everyone should like Akron after its comeback and convincing win over Ohio on Saturday.

Puddles (Eugene, or)

Selling Oregon after the pathetic performance in the Bay?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:33 PM)

Paging Dominic Artis. They need him.

Matt Kamenitz (NYC)

Kansas is best team even though they will have trouble in March with no point guard

Myron Medcalf
  (2:34 PM)

Many said the same thing last season when Tyshawn Taylor had ballhandling issues.

Sarah (New York)

I hate to talk about things that didn't come to fruition BUT... had Victor Oladipo made that dunk on Saturday night, are we talking top 5 all time at any level? Like up there with Jordan's free throw jump and Blake Griffin's posterization of Perkins?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:36 PM)

I was honestly ready to grab my coat and start walking in a random direction. ... Same reaction I had when Vince Carter went between the legs off the bounce in the dunk contest. ... That would have been one of the greatest of all-time. It was a big game and I just ... I don't even know what to say about it. But I'm still shocked by the possibility.

Rory (Fort Collins, CO)

Everyone seems set on claiming the Big 10 as the premier conference. But watching conference play, I'm not convinced the Big East isn't better. Thoughts?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:37 PM)

My thought is that we'll find out in March. I think the Big Ten is the best conference right now. But if the league doesn't send anyone to the Elite Eight and the Big East has 3 teams in the field .... both possible with so much parity nationally ... who's the best then? Let's talk in a month.

David R (Queens NY)

The Mountain Wesy is another competitive Conference being overlooked.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:39 PM)

I haven't overlooked the Mountain West. Wrote about the league a few weeks ago. But that's another league that won't be judged until March Madness. Let's see if anyone from that conference will advance to the tournament's final stages.

Jack (Tuscaloosa)

Why doesn't anyone take Alabama seriously as a tournament team? I know its a down year for the SEC but a 6-2 conference record and a win over Kentucky has to count for something.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:41 PM)

Actually, Jack, it doesn't count for much. The SEC is that bad. Also, they have losses to Mercer, Tulane and Dayton. ... Let's see if Bama makes the field.

Scott (Tucson)

Who wins the Pac-12 now? Oregon's stumbling and Arizona's schedule the rest of the way is pretty easy.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:42 PM)

If Artis is back soon, I'll stick with Oregon. Ducks still have an inside track because they won't see UCLA or Arizona or Arizona State again in the regular season. ... But Zona could take it, too.

James (Oceanside, CA)

How many teams do you see in the tournament out of the Mountain West? The teams are beating up on each other, with only New Mexico withstanding the competition.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:43 PM)

Four. Maybe five. But four is safe right now. It will be interesting to see what happens with Colorado State, Wyoming, Boise State and Air Force in the next few weeks.

Bausch (CFN_Intern) (NYC)

Dude, why the Missouri hate? Keep on trucking.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:46 PM)

I don't have a truck. And I don't hate Missouri. I don't hate any team. I just don't understand the national ranking. ... Mizzou is a team that "should" be good. Doesn't mean that they are. I just want to see what happens in the coming weeks. I'm not convinced the Tigers are a top-25 program. ... And just a reminder: they lost to LSU last week. And I know Keion Bell didn't play. But Mizzou without Bell should be better than Auburn, Georgia and South Carolina, right? Exactly. ... Let's relax on the Mizzou hype.

Matt Kamenitz (NYC)

Villanova or Illinois as the most confusing team in the country?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:46 PM)

Definitely Villanova. Good luck with that one, Selection Committee.

Tyler (Louisville, KY)

You have your pick of one mid-major conference tourney to attend. Which conference tourney would you go to?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:47 PM)

The Ohio Valley tournament for sure. Then, West Coast Conference. After that, the MAC tourney. ... And then the Ivy ... wait .. nevermind.

Jeff (Orlando, FL)

Miami, top 10 in February. Who saw that coming? What's the U's ceiling in March?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:49 PM)

I think it's very high because their defense is so efficient. The Canes are currently fourth in adjusted defensive efficiency per Ken Pomeroy. .. They're complete now. They've lost games only in stretches when they had to go without Durand Scott or an injured Reggie Johnson. ... But they're a special group when they have everyone. Their ceiling? ACC title and deep run in March. It's high.

onassis (texas)

cody zeller overrated?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:50 PM)

Michigan would probably say no.

Scott (Boston)

Hi Myron, give me a team that should be on upset alert in the next couple days?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:52 PM)

Indiana. We've had five new No. 1 teams in the last five AP polls. Hoosiers going to Columbus this weekend. Michigan lost in Columbus the day before many thought that the Wolverines would be the No. 1 team in America.

Matt (Boston)

Should I invent a game where I take a shot every time you mention KenPom? You love that guy.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:53 PM)

I do. Haha. Those numbers help us understand quality over quantity. The team that scores 80 points each night might not be very efficient. So once the game slows down ... and it usually does in the NCAA tournament ... its offense might struggle.

Craig ((MLPS))

For Mid-Major Tourney did you mean MVC instead of OVC ?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:53 PM)

No I didn't .... But I'd like to go to the MVC tourney too.

Adam (Lexington KY)

Kentucky is still a work in progress but if they continue to grow as they have shown the past two weeks does anyone want to see them on there side of the bracket?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:55 PM)

They beat Ole Miss. Blew a giant lead, almost blew the game. The Wildcats aren't guaranteed a slot. If they improve and crack the field, then we can have that conversation. ... But I wouldn't be extremely worried about a team that couldn't beat Texas A&M at Rupp .... not right now.

Nick (South Dakota)

Whos your most underrated team for mid-majors? (not including A10,MWC,WCC) Perhaps one of the Dakota Schools?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:56 PM)

Middle Tennessee. Blue Raiders are talented enough to score an early upset in the NCAA tournament. Solid D, veterans. ... You don't want to see that mid-major in March. Trust me.

David R (Queens NY)

Not convinced Arizona is that good yet.

Myron Medcalf
  (2:57 PM)

Neither am I.

JD (Wisconsin)

Any chance Northwestern makes the tourey?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:57 PM)

Stop it.

Ben (Oklahoma )

who wins the crazy Mountain west? and wich team makes the deepest run in the NCAA tourney

Myron Medcalf
  (2:57 PM)

UNLV. UNLV.

Mike (nc)

does marshall henderson need to be playing college bball or jamming in a rock band somewhere?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:58 PM)

Wait a minute ... He sings, too?

Dan (Bloomington)

Any of the lower half of the B1G have a shot at the tourney? Illinois make a comeback or Iowa make a push?

Myron Medcalf
  (2:58 PM)

Iowa's schedule gets much easier in the second half of the BT season. The Hawkeyes have lost close games. I haven't given up on the idea that the Hawkeyes will turn the corner and make the tourney.

Charles (San Jose)

If Arizona is not "that good," how good are they?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:00 PM)

Don't get me wrong. They're still top 10/15... Just waiting to see the team that crushed Miami and beat Florida. Where is that squad?

Myron Medcalf
  (3:02 PM)

Thank you, thank you. We'll do this again next week. ... It's been real. Find me on Twitter ... @MedcalfByESPN ... or email me at mmedcalf3030@gmail.com if I missed you. ... Have a great week.
