OK guys, let's get rolling. Lots to discuss here.
Great, great piece today Jake. On that subject, Who would you say was the bigger let-down from that class?
Thanks Brandon. Here's a link to that story, btw, for those that haven't read it: http://espn.go.com/colleges/oklahoma/football/story/_/id/8911431/oklahoma-sooners-2008-class-fell-flat-due-injuries-bad-luck
To me, the biggest letdown were the skill players. None of them panned out, outside Landry Jones. You can't have an entire class of WRs and RBs fail to contribute. We saw in 2009 how devastating that really was.
What was some of your favorite Super Bowl commercials? I heard Beyonce's halftime show was lights out.
Ba dum ch. I actually thought the Paul Harvey commercial was well done, even though it wasn't funny. None of the others really stood out, although I was at a watch party and not really paying that much attention to the commercials.
Stop wearing Jean shorts. Just trust me.
Ok, ok, I will.
With Dakota committing, probably means Moore or Baker is out of the running, still think we have a good chance with one of them?
Doesn't necessarily mean that, although it does provoke the thought. To me, OU is 50-50 on either. Sure the staff would be happy if they could land at least one. Two would be a total coup.
Are the Sooners just taking anyone with a warm body and a pulse to round out this class? I'm 6 ft. 170 lbs. When is Bob going to extend an offer?
Can you kick?
Who are your top 3 players left on the board for OU to snag on NSD??
Moore, Baker, Outlaw.
Jake, it appears that OU coaches are offering more juniors this year.Did they change their recruiting philosophy?
We've noticed the same. That's a good question for Stoops I'll ask Wednesday. Other thing too, it's a monster year for recruiting in the state of Oklahoma in 2014. Not reason to wait and let programs outside the state to get in the door.
what are chances of toby johnson coming to us
Better than they were a week ago. I would still bet against it, but OU hasn't given up. He would be a HUGE addition to this class.
Chances with Adrian Baker or LJ Moore?
Toss up on both.
Hey Jake! Thanks again for signing my book. Have you heard about any changes being made with respect to our defense? As in, are we actually going to have linebackers?
No problem, Charles. The coaching staff has been telling recruits that they will be transitioning to a 3-4 defense. Now, will they? I don't know. If they did do it, Corey Nelson would have to play ILB with Frank Shannon, because there are no other ILB on the roster, or coming in with this recruiting class.
If I told you that I want to keep out QB's in the same fold as Landry and Bradford, would that hurt my relationship with the people in Norman? I love our spread offense but I do not want me QB taking hits, a-la Klein. I just do not see the risk/reward in it. What do you think?
The 49ers got to the Super Bowl by following a different philosophy. Not saying you have to run your QB like Collin Klein. But not running him at all, especially with the play Bell (or Knight or Thompson) can move, would be a mistake, in my humble opinion.
Saw your note about SEC having more top calsses this year. It sems when you look at the player rankings, there are a ton that live in the southeast. Its tough to get in there and get that region. Next year looks like more central prospects. Thoughts?
True, although now the SEC is starting to pick off players from the state of Texas, the lifeblood of the Big 12.
What are a few surprises for the Sooners come signing day?
Toby Johnson is not committing until after signing day. But if he signed with OU, that would be quite the surprise of the good variety.
I seen that Bob was on crutches over the weekend, what happened?
He started to bad-mouth me, so I kicked him in the shin.
Do you do this everyweek year round?
Hey Jake can you give any info on the Gary Simon rumor?
Any world on Gary Simon?
According to Bob Stoops, Gary Simon remains a member of the football team. Could that change? Yes. But as of this afternoon, Stoops says he's still on the team.
Running back has and always will be my fav position. Loved bein' RB when I played HS ball, and love to watch good backs. That bein' said, on a scale of 1-10, how much of an impact do you think Ford will make on the field this year? Also, what are the odds that Cavil can make an impact this season? Surely w his height, he'll be a big mismatch in the endzone.
Anywhere from a 0 to a 3. 0, obviously, if he redshirts. But if the coaches feel like Ford is the favorite to start in 2014, they may play him this season to get him some experience, even though he'd be behind Clay and D-Williams.
Starting Oline for next season? Savage or John have a chance to start?
My prediction: LT Daryl Williams, LG Gabe Ikard, C Ty Darlington, RG Bronson Irwin, RT Tyrus Thompson. If Shead is healthy, he'll start at LG, and Ikard would go back to center. But that back really gave Shead problems late last season.
Any news on Gary Simon? Heard he was off the team and not at University of Oklahoma?
As of this afternoon, that is not the case. You can also check the SoonerNation forum for the latest.
Any commits that Oklahoma will steal from other programs?
They jacked 3-star offensive guard Dionte Savage from Baylor today.
Big OU fan from Nevada here. I would like to think this upcoming year's team is similar to the 2000 team in terms of defense. No one that year stood out, but by the time the won it all, a few stars were born. Could that happen this year?
Unlikely. Aaron Colvin might be on par with Derrick Strait, but there's no Roy Williams or Rocky Calmus or Torrance Marshall on this defense.
I know the perception of the Big Ten isnt good nationally...Does Ohio State fall into that catagory in Big 12 country?
My wife is an Ohio State grad, so I best keep my mouth shut re your question.
What are you hearing about Cody Thomas and his MLB draft projections?
Last I checked, he was projecting out as a 4th or 5th round selection. He would probably have to get in the top 2 rounds to give going pro in baseball a second thought.
Who are some of the top must-gets for the class of 2014 so far?
Steven Parker, the safety from Jenks, is a big one. Justice Hansen, the QB from Edmond Santa Fe, is another big target. Some other guys: Ty Barrett, Jeffrey Mead, Arrion Springs, Zaycoven Henderson. Not must gets, but guys you'd like to lock up if you can.
If Cody Thomas stays, do we lose Justice Hansen?
No, I don't think so. Hansen is being recruited by some big-time schools. Anywhere he goes he's going to have competition.
Got to like I am seeing with the bball team! Can we pull it out tonight?
Definitely. This team has been consistent all year and has bounced back well from losses. The back half of the schedule is a little tougher, so winning tonight would be big.
What is Adam Shead's injury?
Back injury kept him out of the Cotton Bowl.
Jake, did you see the newsok article in the osu section talking about how fans are not supposed to contact athletes? I wasn't going to tweet any of them to come to OU, like Adrian Baker, but the Clemsom fans started it....
I actually did a story on this for ESPN.com before signing day last year. It's a huge headache, and the NCAA basically puts the onus on the schools to monitor it. OU had to hire a full-time employee just to monitor tweets and watch out for these type of NCAA violations. The NCAA is going to have to update its stance on it. The current situation is untenable.
With the new JUCO defensive players, any chance that the Mountaineers pull the upset in Norman next year?
Is Cam Newton part of their juco class?
Does Bob and Mike Stoops read this blog? We've been advocating OU moves to 3-4 defense since the season ended. Since OU can't rush the QB with 4, might as well make it 3 and add a tween-er LB to the mix.
If that's the case, I have more ideas for them...
Do you think OU plays a 3-4 defense in the spring game?
Ask me next week, and I'll have a better answer for you.
Is the road game the only potentially ugly game on the Sooners schedule next season?
You mean road "games?" Notre Dame AND OSU look pretty daunting to me.
Where do you think we stand on Nathan Starks? Heard OU is his favorite not too long ago but haven't really heard much else. Seems like he could be better than DeMarco.
The Bishop Gorman pipeline should help. OU signed many players from the Las Vegas high school (Murray, Ryan Reynolds, Justin Chaisson).
If OU does go to a 3-4, do you think Okoronkwo is moved to LB?
Possible. Someone from DE will have to.
Jake, 6 4 / 220Great job on the blog. How explosive will OU's offense be next year, do you think it will top the last two years, or fall back a bit? I am optimistic.
It probably won't be as explosive. That doesn't mean, though, that it can't be better. If the Sooners can run the ball better, they may be tougher to stop and more consistent than they were the previous two seasons.
What does the QB depth chart look like coming into spring practices
1. Bell, 2. Knight/Thompson
How does DJ Ward look?
Looks great. He may play this year.
Jake, over under...I have 4:01 CST
I wouldn't load up on the over. Been drinking a lot of water this chat.
why does OU feel the need to steal Dionte Savage from us? Why cant they just be happy stealing recruits from UT?
Seems like OU does this to Baylor every late January. Was CB Zack Sanchez last year.
What is your recruiting preference, Jake? Coast to coast or keep it local? Seems to me like coaches might be spreading themselves pretty thin the last few years with relatively marginal results (excluding Stills/Jefferson)...
I like going local. Former OU recruiting coordinator Scott Hill once told me the problems they ran into during the 80s recruiting California kids. Those kids get homesick easier, maybe don't fit in as easily. I also think Oklahoma kids bring a certain intangible quality to the program others might not. That's why 2014 is a huge year. Might be the best instate class in the last decade.
I have heard that their will be a coaching change coming soon probably after signing day what have you heard on that and who if correct?
Can you give us anything regarding the rumored coaching changes to occur post signing day?
I've heard all the rumors, two different scenarios specifically. But at this point, they're just rumors. Nothing hard yet.
I saw where Ubben had an article about OU's recruiting falling off. I have to say I've never been a fan of these recruiting rankings, maybe 4 or 5 years later, then rank them, but not before these recruits even put their school's jersey on. OU will be fine, my take on it is if they get the players they need at thin positions I don't care if they're a 1 or 5 star.
I don't disagree. Think about that 2008 class. OU had three highly touted WRs (Jarboe, Owens, Miller). OSU got some 2-star WR out of Adrmore. I think we all know how that turned out. My only criticism of this class is that OU seems to be on Plan D in a couple of areas. Still, I like many parts of this class (Ford, the safeties, the depth on the lines, Stanvon Taylor).
Any of those rumors involving Mangino?
LB from Oklahoma in 2014 will he be going to OU OR OSU?
And as a corollary, what are the chances we sign all of the top in-state we target next year (2014)?
OSU is way more formidable than past years on the recruiting trail. Signing all of them will be difficult. But if OU signs 5 of the top 7, something like that, it will be a successful instate haul.
Jake, there's been a couple of articles discussing OU's 2008 and 2010 recruiting classes lately and how things don't always pan out for many reasons. In your opinion, how does Stoops and Co. rate as talent evaluators? Above average, average or below average?
The 2010 class has panned out. My point in that article is that it hasn't been able to elevate OU to a title contender like we all (including Stoops) thought it would a couple of years ago. I think this staff overall does a good job evaluating. Case in point: CB Aaron Colvin, who was a three-star prospect that went under the radar. He might be the best returning CB in the country next season.
Any news on Quincy Russell? Is he still planning on coming to OU?
Nothing really know. Still planning to come to OU. Just has get to take care of some academic house cleaning.
USC offered OKC-Douglass four-star defensive end Deondre Clark today, is there an offer from OU in the future?
There was one in the past. He already has an OU offer.
Your three or four wide receivers who could be on the field next season
Saunders, Shepard and some combination of Metoyer/Neal/Woods/Cavil
What 2013 signee do you think will make the biggest impact there freshman year?
Ultimately, I think S Hatari Byrd and DB Stanvon Taylor could have instant impact seasons. Maybe DE DJ Ward, too. Maybe S Ahmad Thomas, who like Ward is enrolling early.
Jake, what are your thoughts on Dakota Austin, Dionte Savage?
Think both guys were added for depth purposes. OU didn't feel good about the numbers at OG or CB.
Hello Jake, In reference to respect. after the improvents in the OSU program and with what we did at Norman this year as in scare the hell out of most Sooner Fans, Do you see the Sooner fanbase showing any respect towards OSU or will it take a few wins from them to get it done? I see us winning this year. Do you?
What say you, Sooner fans?
Starting Defense next year? if you had to put a bet down?
I should know better than to make bad bets. But if I had to guess, with OU running a 4-3, Chuka, Wade, Phillips, Grissom, Nelson, Shannon, Lynn, Wilson, Colvin, Cortez, Byrd.
Any idea on the top schools for Douglas' Deondre Clark?
His brother is going to OSU to play basketball so they're probably going to be in the mix. But he's going to get offers virtually everywhere.
why cant we offer alabama's D/C A job and tripple his pay?
I like it. While we're at it, OU should go get Greg Roman to call the offense.
Alex Ross- OU's next great RB. I'm a big believer. I love the way he runs. Will they give him an oppurtunity in the spring to push Williams and Clay?
Push, no. But for Ross, it's about 2014. His competition is with Keith Ford for the heir to the running back throne.
Yo Jake!! The coaches told me, "I WILL" start my freshman year. You believe me don't you? If so, should I still put work in? PEACE!!
Eh, did they? Not so sure they did.
After careful consideration to the question posed, I believe OSU still sucks!!! Haha, just kidding, they are good, will remain good and it is good for us and the conference, little brother is getting some facial hair.
Tell KSPF that Big Brother does not even think about lil bro.
Jake, Who would be NG in a 3-4? I'm no expert, but that position needs a specific body type, who would OU slot there?
Truth is, they really don't have that player on the roster. Of the returning players, Jordan Phillips would probably be the most likely. But he's far from an ideal fit.
What if a 3-4 Defense who starts?
Wade, Phillips, Russell, Grissom, Nelson, Franklin, Wilson, Lynn, Byrd, Colvin, Cortez.
Man I hope these jucos pan out. Kass everett only got special teams reps and chaz nelson completely disappeared
Mike Reed, JR Bryant, David Sims, Courtney Gardner, Will Latu... going juco is a risk. Sometimes you come back with Torrance Marshall and Phil Loadholt. We'll see what happens with these guys.
We need a receiving TE, all the good ones in the NFL came from college basketball...Gates, Gonzalez, Graham etc...do we have anyone on Lon Kruger's team that is 6'6" and 250ish? Hope Bob is reading the blog...this is a great idea!
Couldn't Romero Osby play tight end? I think he could.
Top player recruiter for Oklahoma since Tony Jefferson is gone?
Brennan Clay. He claims he's the one who recruited Jefferson to OU, btw.
Hey, that was not me. OSU? Respect? I respect what they have accomplished, but Xerox U just want's to be like big Bro.
Guys, that's all the time we've got today. Sorry I couldn't get to all the questions. We'll do it again next Monday, same time, same place. Follow SoonerNation for all the developments on signing day.
