All right. Welcome to the return of the Tuesday chat. And thanks to all who tuned in Friday when we relocated it. First question is on Giants, per the result of our weekly Twitter contest, so go.
Does Ahmad Bradshaw have any trade value? Would it be possible to trade him and Cruz for draft picks or some free agents that are CB's or DL?
Taking the last part first, the Giants have no interest in dealing Cruz for anyone or anything. They want to sign him and keep him. As for Bradshaw, I doubt he has trade value at this point given his injury issues and salary. The Giants are better off keeping him (even if it's at a lower cost) and finding a role for him in the run game that doesn't overtax his banged-up feet.
Is it true that the NFL is conferring with the Redskins on RGIII's recovery timeline in hopes of adjusting the schedule so that the QB is back for any "high profile" games? Seems a little unfair to adjust a teams schedule around it's injuries.
Adam Schefter's report Sunday said the league had inquired to see if the Redskins could provide them with any information about the recovery as it worked to schedule its 2013 prime time games. I don't see a problem with that. If they're trying to figure out whether to put a high-profile Redskins game on a Monday night or Sunday night and they have one slot open in September and one in December, maybe they put it in December if they don't think the big star will be back in time.
What position should the Giants be looking to take in the draft?
Offensive line would be my first thought for them, but they haven't taken a lineman in the first round since 1999.
You can tell people have nothing else to do when they think whoever plays the eagles in Philadelphia first will win the super bowl next season. If I had some time I probably could come up with another 10 common occurrences all four of those teams had when they were on their way to winning the super bowl.
I look forward to seeing your results.
Dan,Do the eagles keep Asomogua? Any idea if he is open to a restructure? There's no doubt he used to be elite, can he return to a serviceable level?
Chris, I don't think the Eagles are going to bring back Asomugha even if he does want to restructure. He's pretty toxic there right now with the fans after the effort he gave the last two seasons, and I don't know why the new coach would want to risk continuing an arrangement that's been lousy for both sides.
I was glad to see RGIII mention that Alfred Morris was also a nominee in his ROY acceptance speach, since the NFL for some reason did not mention that he or Doug Martin were nominees.
Robert is no dummy.
Whats your Super Bowl prediction for next year?
Cold, traffic, logistical fiascoes and a ton or regret to which the NFL will never admit.
Dan, in your honest opinion do you see Cruz (rather his agent) budging on the ridiculous 6-8M a year? (Also the dude needs to realize he will get millions in sponsorship in NYC that he cant get elsewhere)
In my honest opinion, given the way he has produced over the past couple of years, I don't see how that number is ridiculous.
How much playing time does Rob Jackson get next year with Fletcher and Orakpo coming back?
It's a good question, and one the Redskins have to address relatively soon because Jackson is a free agent. You have to think they have a role for him after what he contributed this year, but if Fletcher and Orakpo are back he's not a starter. I think they could use him very effectively in a backup role if he's up for it. But if he wants to parlay his 2012 success into a starter's job, and if someone will pay him to do that, then the Redskins likely lose him.
Speaking of restructuring of athletes, do you think Dallas is silly enough to cut Miles and create a gaping hole in their WR corps? Ogletree is gone.
No, I do not think the Cowboys will cut Miles Austin.
Is RGIII the most polarizing player in the NFL? The way people are treating him, big market, big brand, could he be the NFL's Michael Jordan?
How is he polarizing? From what I can tell, everyone loves the guy.
Will you be in attendance at either the combine or the NFL Draft?
I will NOT be at the combine. As for the draft, no idea. I had a team picking second last year and went. I have a team picking fourth this year, so presumably the player the Eagles take will be in attendance at Radio City, which is very close to where I live. My guess is I'll be there, but those plans are not yet set.
Dan, with the cap issues the Redskins face, can they clear enough room to offer Bills S Jairus Byrd a competitive contract?
I doubt it, since my understanding is that Buffalo is motivated to keep Byrd. But if they can, he'd be a fantastic pickup for the Redskins.
Dan, follow-up on not cutting Miles. You've written that there will essentially be cap casualties in Dallas this off season. Where are you leaning right now in terms of players getting cut?
I don't have my list in front of me, but Spears, Free and maybe Sensabaugh are guys who could be in trouble, I think
I cannot see another team giving up a 1st rounder on a RFA Cruz just to pay him his extension money. Especially with the rookie contracts they are today. Would it be fair to say the giants have some leverage over Cruz at least for the time being?
Yes, it would.
Will it really be that much of a difference for D Ware in the 4-3 as opposed to the 3-4? It seems like it will only help him because his sole responsibility will be to get after the QB rather than drop into coverage sometimes like he did in Ryan's scheme.
Your logic is fine. My issue with Ware as a 4-3 linemen is the physical toll it's likely to take on him when he has less space in which to operate. He's already broken down a bit in each of the last two seasons, and I'm not sure he's got the size to handle that position for the years to come.
So both Revis and Asomugha will be avaiable this offseason? Wasn't too long ago that they were the premier corners in football.
Well, one of them still is.
Do you think the Cowboys will sit Ware more than they have in the past so he can hold up the whole season? He has had neck issues in the past and he was basically playing on one arm for the last 6 games or so.
Makes sense in theory, but do they have the depth on the defensive line to do that if they move to a 4-3? I doubt it.
Hey, I'm beginning to like Dan Snyder. -Signed, a Redskins Fan
Man, if you live long enough you see everything.
I just found out Eli had a higher QBR this year than last year. I was shocked.
That surprises me as well, though the tool is designed to evaluate the quarterback's impact on his team's ability to win games. And the Giants did have the exact same record in 2012 as they had in 2011.
If the Cowboys were to cut Doug Free, would he make sense for the Redskins?
I don't see how Doug Free makes sense for anyone in the NFL after the way he played the past two years.
So the eagles cut nnamdi who are their starting cbs drc & milliner or milliner & marsh
They're going to have to get new corners. DRC is a free agent.
Dan, first off welcome back. I know i missed the chat last week but hey we all get a day off sometime right? My question is what position will the Redskins address w/ their first pick in the draft? Even though it is a 2nd rounder will they be able to find a starter?
I think if they decide to go for safety or cornerback there, it's completely reasonable to believe they can find a starter. Same if they look for a right tackle.
If you needed a good S in FA, but needed it to be a bargain type deal...who would you target?
say a team like the texans calls jerry and asks him about ware what does jerry say
Look, Ware is a Hall of Fame-level player who's still in his prime. When we talk about whether he can transition to a 4-3, the answer is almost certainly "yes." The concerns I raise are potential concerns, along the lines of "Well, if he can't do it, what would the reason be?" The odds still favor Ware as a major contributor for Dallas next year in the pass rush.
Is Parnell good enough to replace Free, Parnell did give up 5 sacks I believe.
"Good enough to replace Free," is not the same as "good enough to make the Cowboys' offensive line more viable." I think they need someone new in that spot, and it's not Parnell.
When are you going to change the order of the Breakfast Links?
The breakfast links will remain in final standings order until the start of the new league year in March.
Dan lets's answer some questions with real thought put into them like this one.First off do you know the deadline for teams to put in a claim for WR Titus Young? Second I heard Dallas won't put in a claim but if he clears waivers they might look to sign him. How stupid is that since they would have to sign him for more than his 550,000 salary for 2013?
I don't know where you're hearing these things, but any information on Young is premature. He's a massive headache, from what I understand, and the Cowboys have bigger needs.
Why do you think the SB will have logistical issues next year? Im not arguing, just curious as someone who has lived in NJ my whole life, but has never been to a SB. I know you are an NJ resident as well.
The teams are staying in Jersey City. The media center, NFL Experience, etc. are in Manhattan. One team will practice in East Rutherford, the other in Florham Park. Media Day will be in Newark. The game in East Rutherford. These things are not all close to each other. The weather this time of year stinks. It's not about Super Bowl Sunday. It's about the whole week. It shouldn't be here.
Any word on the possibility of Andy Reid and Chiefs as a potential trade partner with the Eagles during the draft? They seemed to have a pretty clean break and the Chiefs will presumably have high picks in more than just Round 1.
I don't know of anything that would keep the Chiefs and Eagles from being trade partners if they could help each other. As you indicate, I do not think there are hard feelings there with Reid and his former employers.
Have you seen enough out of David Wilson and Rueben Randle in which you believe they can both be solid contributors next year?
Yes. Solid contributors. I think Wilson especially has shown that, if nothing else than as a return man. The Giants like to develop their guys, and I think you'll see more opportunities for both of those players in 2013.
All things being equal, do you think the Giants would prefer D. Martin or D. Wilson?
All things being equal, Martin is the better back. But I can buy their assertion that they saw Wilson as the better fit for them, since they were going to give Bradshaw the starter's job and Wilson is speedier than Martin.
Do you see Vick staying with the Eagles?
I still don't, no. But they might keep him around a while to keep the option open until they figure out the real answer.
Dan, don't be so negative. If Jerry could make it work, Woody and I can.
The Super Bowl in Dallas was a disaster on every level, and because of one ice storm. Sure, this area handles snow and ice better than Dallas does. But why invite that mess to your big event? Why chance it? This whole thing is a favor from the league to Mara, who is its most powerful owner. Total money grab for him and Woody as part of their stadium deal. Anybody who tells you different is selling something you don't want to buy.
What do you think the Skins will do with DHall and his huge salary? Would he be willing to take a pay cut to stay?
I think he will. He has good relationships there, and if he has a good agent, the agent will impress upon him that it's wise to stay in a place where you're sure they'll tolerate your act.
Dan, what is your opinion on the Redskins bringing back Fred Davis? I think its a must do move considering he is coming from suspensions and injuries, they could sign him reasonably cheap.
Yeah, I think they bring him back. They'd love to franchise him again, but cap concerns might make it wiser to sign him to a longer-term deal with a lower base
"These things are not all close to each other." All of the things you mentioned are within 20-25 miles of each other. I don't really see the issue.
My guess is that you've never covered a Super Bowl.
Dan- you're Howie Roseman. You're on the clock. Star Lotulei, Joeckel, Fisher, Milliner are all available. Who are you drafting?
If my coach has gone ahead and switched us to a 3-4 defense, I'm taking Star.
True, but as a fan, do I really care about how much the media has to travel?
No, and you shouldn't. But the league should. And much more than that, it should care about the quality of the experience for its teams and its high-roller sponsors to whom the Super Bowl is more than just Sunday. Again, I think the league has made a mistake that it will regret from a business standpoint. The week in Dallas was not a success, no matter what Commissioner Blinders insists.
Has Chip Kelly ever said he wants a 3-4? They really do not have the personnel for that
He has not said that (or much of anything) publicly. And they definitely do not have the personnel for it. The reporting done by those who cover the team seems to point to the change, but you are correct that we don't know for sure yet.
Ed Reed to the Eagles...Ravens won't be able to sign him, see a fit there?
Yeah, he'd be exactly what they need. But I think Baltimore finds a way to keep him. That Super Bowl title has a way of changing people's perspectives.
A follow up to the Vick question. I was listening to Mike and Mike this morning. They mentioned if the Eagles keep Vick after a certain time Thursday they will need to pay him 3+ million in some sort of guaranteed $. You really see them paying him that just for the additional options?
Read the links this morning. Geoff Mosher did some more reporting on that and found that the Eagles are only liable for that $3 million if they end up keeping him or if they cut him and he can't find work elsewhere. If they cut him after Feb. 6 and someone signs him for more than $3 million, they're off the hook.
Dan, if next year's Super Bowl doesn't go well, does it ruin my chances to get the game?
Not as much as not building a new stadium would.
I guess I could be wrong, but I think the players and the high roller sponsors will be pretty happy that they get to hang out in Manhattan for a week. Beats Indy right?
Sure, but (a) Indy had a great week, largely because it got a great break on the weather and (b) Manhattan can be a very tough place to move around in a winter storm.
Do the Eagles already have their QB for next season on the roster or do they look elsewhere?
I think the Eagles' 2013 quarterback is not currently on their roster.
If not Parnell the who? FA or 2nd rd pick?
Why not a first-round pick?
Dan,This might be an oxymoron, but which of these teams were the worst the SB winners - this year's Raven's team or last year's Giants team? Honestly, I don't remember being less inspired by the winners of a SB more so than I have the last two years.
There's a pile of stats to suggest that last year's Giants were the worst Super Bowl winner of all time. I have written about this. But people get mad, so I'm going to leave it right there.
What are the chances Jason Garret remains headcoach if his team has a better record than this year but still misses the playoffs?
Dan, The 'Skins need a new stadium? Fedex isn't that old.
Well, no. I didn't mean to suggest a new Redskins stadium could be in the offing. I was more suggesting that Washington isn't in line for a Super Bowl just because NJ is getting one, and that the difference is that I REALLY BELIEVE that the Super Bowl was always part of the deal the Giants and Jets got from the league when they made the deal for their new stadium.
Yes, i think Romo with a o-line can get it done for Dallas but is it likely that Dallas doesnt find another replacement for him and we have to get used to another X ammount of years without a decent qb?
I just don't think that ranks among their most imminent problems.
aside from needing to draft a QB, do you see Philly's draft being heavy on Defense? I sure hope so
Yes. They're going to need a ton of new players on defense, especially if they're going to a 3-4.
I'm a Giant fan and can see the argument for last year's Giants being the worst SB team. That being said, their road last year in the playoffs was pretty tough (ATL, GB, SF and NE). Its not like there was an upset in another game and they avoided a better team they could have played.
Brian, there is no doubt in my mind the Giants were the best team in the NFL from Dec. 24, 2011 through Feb. 5, 2012. Absolutely no doubt. Nobody played at the level at which they played for those six games. They could and did beat everybody. The "worst team ever to win the Super Bowl" idea comes from the whole 20-game statistical picture, as it appears from the early part of your question that you understand.
Dan, What are your thoughts on London Fletcher? Retire or one more year?
I think he gives it one more year.
Do you see DeAngelo Hall making the switch to Free Safety? If so, who do you like for the Skins's first pick in the 2nd round?
I really do kind of like that idea for Hall. Comes down to whether he likes it, though, and I can't speak to that.
Folks, we're cutting the chat early today. So only two more minutes for questions. Sorry.
Is Anthony Spencer really the key to what the Cowboys do in the 1st round?
Well, he could be. If they lose him, I think 4-3 defensive end becomes a big priority for them. They seem to think Jason Hatcher could play out there, but then that would open up a hole at DT that they'd have to address at 18. If they keep Spencer, they have more flexibility and depth on their new 4-3 line and can address offensive line instead with that first-round pick. So yeah, it's possible.
I believe your post said the chat "returns to its regularly scheduled Tuesday noon ET time slot." What gives?
Something came up. Gotta go. Thanks so much for the questions. Back at ya next week.
